  1. Hi All, I had lap band surgery in 2009 when I was 22. I lost 100lbs in 3yrs and had a normal bmi. Over the years I've gained 70lbs back and the lap band is a pain. I have a conversion consult on Wednesday. I've always thought I wanted to go with the sleeve but I now know a few people who haven't had great success with it. I know a couple with bypass who look great and are very happy. I'm wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation or has any thoughts/advice? Thanks! 2. My surgeries were eye opening. I had surgery in March, where my surgeon discovered, my previous surgery was done wrong so he had to abort and close me back up. He had to assess the next steps to consider how to fix the issue he found. We made a plan and I had to wait three months for my next surgery. I had my 2nd surgery June 27th. Dr Chaisson was going to fix the issues he found the first time and do the revision. Surgery was expected to be 3 hrs but ended up being 8hrs long. This time, with a more thorough look at the anatomy, he found out my common channel was only 25cm long and my pouch was larger than expected. Both of those things mean that I never had a RNY bypass but a biliopancreatic diversion. So my surgeon had to fix the issues with my anamostasis to the pouch, resize my pouch and make my common channel longer. So it wasn't what we expected at all, my loss has been slow, but I've lost about 50lbs since June.
  3. I don't know about this company or policy in particular, but many won't approve revisions for weight gain. Some, however, approve them if there are medical issues. Since you've had issues with GERD and high blood pressure, that *might* be enough for some companies -but again, not all companies approve revisions. I wonder if a doctor could have a peer-to-peer review with them. Although your current surgeon isn't in your network, so that might be an issue - is there a bariatric surgeon who's in your network that you could do a consultation with?
  4. Hello everyone, I’ve gone through the long process of trying to get a revision surgery after gaining most of the weight back after having the sleeve in 2014. I’ve had mental health issues in the years following and also developed GERD and High blood pressure in the recent years since. The insurance company (BCBS of North Carolina) has been giving me issues from the start first saying that my surgeon wasn’t in network so they wouldn’t cover the surgery. Upon further investigation from my doctors office the real issue was them denying my claim for a revision because there was a lack of evidence showing that I followed proper diet and exercise after my first surgery. Has any experienced something similar? I have the two comorbidities and my bmi is currently 45 so I’m just kinda in shock they denied me especially without even informing me.
  5. Hey Everyone! So, I am 7-weeks post op, robot-assisted RnY gastric bypass. I have recently had some increased diaphragm pressure and discomfort. No real pain, but pressure and it is quite uncomfortable. I'm able to eat and drink. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting. I'm going to reach out to my surgical team, but I wondered if anyone else might have had this, too. It's possible that this was caused by wearing elastic-waist pants that were too snug - I did that for a couple of days in a row. Thanks! Jeanne

Having Gastric Bypass with paraesopageal hernia repair on 12/16. Anyone else have the hernia repair with their surgery?
  7. Mine was pretty much ok after about 4/5 days. I was told gasEX won't help. I was told this by my team and the nurses in the hospital. Gasex is for gas trapped in your bowels, gas from surgery is trapped in your body cavity (usually the chest) My gas pain was horrid the first 2 days I couldn't even deal with it. I asked for pain meds just so they would knock me out and I wouldn't have to deal with it. lol (PS: I was given a double dose of gas because my surgery was 3 in 1 and took way longer than the average bypass)
  8. Thanks! I was a sleeve revision to mini bypass at 286 and thankfully its really moving so far
  9. I was given one month of Lomaira at about 6.5 years after vsg, right before my revision for gerd. I was worried about the side effects of phentermine. I was supposed to take it 3x a day. I took half of a pill (it worked) in the afternoon, not every day, when I got cravings. I have heard good things about Ozempic. I bet it is a lot safer than phentermine which is the common go-to drug they give wls. Glad you found something that works for you.
  10. I was a revision which means weight loss is slower, but I am 5'4" and started my journey at 286 lbs and today I am 246.3. I am 1-month post-op. I'm using the 3 patches that the bypass patients use plus one multivitamin.

  16. Hello, I am two years post-sleeve surgery, down about 80 pounds and happy. Unfortunately, I have developed pretty severe iron deficiency anemia which was discovered because I developed horrible restless legs syndrome. I'm taking 60 mg of Iron in my bariatric vitamin without much success. My doctor has recommended IV iron infusion. I was just curious if other sleevers have had this problem, as I thought it was more associated with bypass. Also, if you have experience, can you share how you felt during/after infusions? I have an anxiety disorder and worry about everything, so I'd love some real life tales. Thank you, Rebecca
  17. Having gerd was enough for me to get the revision covered. When I first went in to speak to my current surgeon, I had a bmi of 28. He advised to get the revision ASAP. Unfortunately, I didn't. I was so scared to get the bypass. Also, I was content with my weight loss (bmi 60+ to 28, steady for many years) and thought I could control the gerd with PPIs. I couldn't. I suffered terribly for years after that. Looking at it in retrospect, I was silly. Best thing I ever did.

Looking for a November surgery pal

@Barihopeful- sorry for the late response. I’ve been sooo tired. Haven’t been feeling my normal energy or self lately. I’m loosing inches. Afraid to get on the scale just yet. When I went to my post op appointment I was down 16 lbs including preop lost. I will weigh in on the 9th. Exactly one month. How’s everyone doing with their liquids? I’m not hungry and finding it to be a chore to eat and drink lol oh btw this is a revision from Sleeve to Bypass with a hernia repair.
  20. Hi everyone, I just had my gastric bypass surgery and hiatal hernia repair on Tuesday. Getting into the groove of drinking water every 15 min but did a bad job yesterday. I’m really struggling with this liquid diet and can’t wait until I can eat soft foods after my doctor clears me on Dec 12 for my follow up appt. Any tips on making it through the liquid diet? I’m getting tired of soups and protein shakes only. I’ve lost 5 pounds since my surgery so far so I’m on the right path also 15 pounds since starting my liquid diet 3 weeks ago. One day at a time.

    A Fib and Gastric Bypass

You probably can go through with your bypass, but that is a call for your medical team - the surgeon and cardiologist. Typically, they want you stable and under control when you go in for surgery - they don't want surprises on the operating table - that's what these various specialist clearances are for. If we were all in perfect health with no pre existing conditions, no one would ever get WLS. I hear you on the Eliquis - it's the new kid on the block which makes it expensive, but the older meds are a lot more inconvenient to use (when my father was still alive, he was always needing blood draws to adjust the doses of his coumadin/warfarin blood thinner, which isn't necessary with Eliquis.) The drug companies often have discount programs for these expensive drugs to drop the copays for the patient (they don't mind sticking it to the insurance companies, but they want it cheap enough for the patient to use the med rather than a cheaper generic alternative,) so check into that. It's not the end of the journey, but it is a detour. At the beginning of this year, my PCP found that I was in Afib when I was getting a clearance for cataract surgery, which put that off for a while until it got treated, but it did happen, though a few months later than expected.
  22. I woke up yesterday in the middle of the night with my heart racing and feeling dizzy and light headed. I had a cardiologist appointment at 8am for cardiology cleareance. Needless to say I didnt get that clearance and was sent straight to the hospital in A fib. My heart eventually straightened itself out on its own and I was send home with metoprolol and plans to get on a blood thinner. My question is can I still have the gastric bypass surgery with A fib? I am terrifed they are going to say that I cant have the surgery now because of the blood thinner. They wanted me to go on Eliquis but with my insurance it costs $370. I cant pay that every month, so Im waiting for the dr to call in something else. Please tell me this is not the end of the journey for me.
  23. What was your starting weight vs now? How many supplements do you have to take a day? I am planning to get the gastric sleeve but now I am curious about the MGB. Sent from my SM-N970U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I am 7 days post-op, had several problems. My gastric bypass went well, but the found a hiatal hernia and liver problems, on top of that the gas didn't dissipate as normal it went into my face, neck, chest, heart and lung. Ended up with a partially collapsed lung and needed a chest tube. I'm on a ton of meds that have to be crushed and taken every 6 hours. I can't stomach anything but water and I apologize for the gross details but now I'm struggling with horrible diarrhea. I just want to feel better, has anyone run into this problem.
