Post op one week--protein problems
Boo_Nikole replied to Boo_Nikole's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also don't like protein shakes. But I'm willing to trying different stuff. I can have full liquids next. Does anyone know how flavorless protein tastes in cream soups (cream of chicken, celery, mushroom...etc) -
IMHO, you are not at your sweet spot, you are too tight. You should be able to eat more then 1-2 bites of solid Protein. The problem that I found being too tight was that I wasn't eating the good food because I couldn't keep it down, do was eating WAY too much softer foods. Making me not lose weight. Making me think getting an unfill would just make it worse. I was wrong, and it took an esophigel spasm that put me in the ER, thinking I was having a heart attack to make me realize I was doing damage to my body and still not losing weight.

I investigated the gastric bypass several years ago, going as far as consulting with the MD. I decided is was not for me. When I met with my present surgeon he recommended the bypass and I just informed him that was not an option. the band is less invasive and does not re-route on cut on my digestive system. He was fine with that. In fact, he was impressed I had researched the other procedure and ruled it out. He like informed patients. This is a personal decision that should not be strongly influenced by the doctor. I agree with others. I would get 2nd or 3rd opinions and, if your really want the band and this doctor to do it, tell him. It is your body and your decision. If he doesn't agree, go to a different doctor. I am a nurse and see all the time patients just doing what the doctor wants. Medicine has changed and you, the patient, are the most important member of the healthcare team. The final decision in any healthcare situation is yours. Good luck as you research and try to decide. We are always here to support you, whatever you decision. sunny -

I agree, pack an igloo for healthily, high protein snacks or meals. Stay away from all the junk.. You committed to this change in eating lifestyle, so don't jeopardize your progress for a few days away.. -
LapBand scheduled for 7/14 but haven't noticed anyone near my age here

Hi MaidMarion, Yeah, I have something in common with someone besides being a bander. We are "same day new banders". You are nearly as young as my daughter who is 43 years old, lol. I know I am going to need all the encouragement that I can get, for I am a terrible one to snack. I am missing them already and I have just begun to change eating habits...one month now. I really don't know just what I can and cannot have to eat, I just know that protein is the number one thing to have and fats are a no-no. I do thank you for your helpful suggestions on exercise I can do and I am hoping to be out of this wheelchair at least by September or sooner with luck. Keep in touch. Leelee -
Hello-New Here- Going To Be Banded In Two Weeks
kkccmom replied to MiriamE's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Miriam... my band was placed July 31. It has been a really difficult journey for me..and recovery has taken much longer (harder) than I ever expected. I "am" 50 y/o, so someone younger may have an easier time... I'd say stick as true to the pre-op as you can. I will say that "I" did "cheat" a couple times, but never once over the top...still, Carolinagirl is right....its training ground for what's ahead. Be sure you are DRINKING as much as you can, esp post-op. Do your best to get in ALL the nutrition you can post-op...I didn't do that b/c I was so DONE w/ the shakes, and ended up feeling SO SO SO SICK...still, do Soup as soon as you can. You won't feel deprived and your body won't revolt on you (like mine did). Don't believe for one minute that this is an "easy" road...it is NOT. But be sure to DRINK, "eat" what you are allowed, WHEN you are allowed, and you'll do fine. Just don't rush yourself. I think I have done that, and it causes LOTS of stress and depression can easily set in. Today is my first best day since I came home on aug 1. I feel stronger today than yet...actually had some TACO BELL refried pintos & cheese. Not something I can do daily, of course, but its great Protein and felt great to be eating NORMALLY....so it will come. Do what you are told...the headaches and fatique will pass, but get it all in...and DRINK DRINK DRINK your water/sugar-free stuff... Good luck!! Post often and let us know how you're doing. I, for one, am a strong believer in NO JUDGEMENT if you feel like crap and want to vent...this ain't for the faint-of-heart...so you have a right to whine, but we won't leave you in the ditch!! Best! --Kim in IN -

Why are you tempting yourself by going off of your plan? This change you've committed to won't take place by itself. If you're taking a cooler pack tuna, cottage cheese, yogurt, ricotta, oatmeal, protein shakes pre-made, milk etc. You CAN live your life, just don't mess with a good thing, you were given a 2nd chance to be healthy, embrace it!! -
Post op 3 1/2 weeks
Bufflehead replied to cutiek16's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is no "we" in post-op bariatric eating unless you are talking to patients of the same surgeon being advised by the same dietitian. My instructions may be very different from yours -- you need to check in with your own team. My instructions were: no veggies until 8 weeks post op. Even then, green/low carb veggies only, they had to be cooked enough so that they were soft enough to cut easily with a fork, and no more than 1 oz per meal (the other 1-2 oz of the meal had to be high protein food such as soft meat or scrambled eggs). -
Surgery scheduled 3/16
AmyNCgirl replied to KristyVSG's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery date is March 14th! I'm estatic and I just enjoyed myself tremendously this past weekend. But oddly enough, I didn't binge eat. I just enjoyed the foods and savored the flavors but no binge eating and when I thought about my choices they were all Protein packed even the Peanut Butter. So Yay Me!! I've worked too hard on this journey to give it all up now. I'm all in!!! -
Hello all, I was just banded on 05/27/09 and I am doing better everyday. However, I am having issues with bloating after I drink almost anything UGH. I am drinking extremely slow to the point where I could almost use a dropper instead LOL. I saw my doctor today for follow up just to find out that the PROTEIN I need for energy is what is causing me the bloating...just great. If I don't drink the protein I get very weak and if i do drink it I fell bloated and miserable. My dr suggested that I continue to try different protein drinks or try egg white powder, yummy. Has anybody out there experienced this? Any suggestions? HELP I am sooo uncomfortable all the time with the bloating....

I did pretty much the same thing gave up my coffee, then my white carbs rice, bread and pasta. I wouldn't rush into the drinking of the protein and the soup. I was fine before surgery with them but now I cannot even look at protein drinks or soup for that matter. I am hopeful this will change. I had lost 16 lbs pre-op by changing these habits and it also helped at home getting the family ready for the change and focus on the type of food we eat. Good luck on you journey!

I am scheduled to have surgery July 6th...and I have been reading these boards for tips and hints. One thing that I read in the frequently asked questions is about exercise. It's recommended you start walking ASAP. Last year I tore the meniscus on my right knee, had surgery....but it is still very painful. My doctor told me weight loss would definitely help it! So my question is this....what are some other ways to exercise for anyone that walking isn't an immediate option? I have a recumbent stationary bike. I guess I'm pre-worrying, because I am SO ready to do this! I'm very excited/anxious, and the one thing that I see over and over that seems to help people be successful is walking. My doctor told me that even losing 40 pounds will diminish the pain and make long walks a realistic goal! I just want to make sure I can get to a 40 pound loss!!! Thanks in advance! Doji

New member, banded in one month from now! scared and excited!
banded_princess posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all! I am new to this website, i have managed to finally book my lap band surgery for november 2011 after fighting with myself for so many years! I am 176 cms tall and weigh almost 139kgs.. sigh... i never thought it would be that hard letting that out..... i have a high high cholesterol of almost 9.0, and although i am getting this done because i want a healthier and longer life in the future, i am looking forward to being able to feel like a normal "young" person like i should be feeling at my age! i turn 21 in a couple of weeks and do wish all my weight loss methods would have worked till now, because i have literally tried everything under the face of the sun, terry white, weight watchers, jenny craig, personal trainers, xenical, naturopathy... this was my last and final option! im so scared of the operation because i have been researching all the bad things that could come out of it but i am concentrating on the positive for now and cannot wait to have it done! the one thing i am scared of is failure.. so far all the weight loss methods i have tried have failed and ended up with me gaining triple of what i lost... i started dieting at 12 and have not been able to buy normal clothes for many years now.... i just hope it all works out well! anyone else getting it done anytime soon? -
So Nervous and Excited......All at the Same Time?!?!
hdsantoni posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been on a waiting list for surgery. I got a call from my doctors nurse. November 24th is the date. I need to go and get my physical finding from my PCP and then see the surgeon and the anasticiologist to give them the report and get their clearance for surgery. I never thought that I could feel so excited and scared at the same time. His nurse said at my BMI pre-op diet isn't needed. However, I think I will go for at least a week on 2 protein shakes a day and then a low carb meal in late afternoon. Has anyone heard of not having to do the pre-op diet? I just think that it would be easier to do to start because of the diet after surgery. Anyone else around my date? -

MacMadame replied to hdsantoni's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I didn't have to do a pre-op diet. However, I had been making lifestyle changes to get ready for the surgery. For example, I started eating Protein first and only eating 4-6oz meals and I made sure to up my water/fluid consumption. I also worked on chewing more and eating slower. (Not enough though.) I also started taking the Vitamins pre-op that I'd have to take post-op so I could get my routine started. I'm glad I did these things because there were so many other things to worry about and change after my surgery that I'm glad I had at least a few good habits in place. And, though this wasn't the goal, I did lose 30 lb. during the 7 months I was working on these things. -

So I have a date!!! I am so excited! Today has been a mixture of different emotions.. My husband is stationed at Fort Hood and the memorial service was today.. We went... it was so so so sad. Our leaders have great writers for all their speeches but today was so touching. It might have been because this is our home and our friends. After the service I walked home (post was a mad house and driving wasn't an option) I got the phone call... December 23!!! I am so excited. After something so tragic i felt guilty being happy on this day. We have amazing surgeons on post and it's not like going to a normal gastric surgeon.. we are filler surgeries.. when ever they have time they fit us in... and it's a LONG wait usually I have been very fortunate to not have to wait very long and my time has been exceptionally short. So to get the call this soon has been phenominal. My preop diet starts on the 15th of December and I hope this will be a very MERRY CHRISTMAS. -

Banded September 2009 And It's Getting Harder!
sfchick posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yikes...this isn't good... Has this happened to anyone else? In September 2010...I was banded. Lots of up and downs...fills that were tight...too loose, finding my sweet spots... I fly a LOT for work...so my band gets tight at times because the elevation kills me. I recently had some trouble, had 4 cc taken out and put on 20 lbs... I went back and forth getting fills, getting unfilled, and I was at the doctor all the time....FINALLY I found a happy medium. I'm at 8 cc with an 11 cc band. I was doing GREAT. I had excellent restriction. I was eating well. Drinking lots of Protein. One day, a couple days after my WONDERFUL fill, I ate a couple chicken meatballs for dinner, and ate them too fast. Lots of vomiting, and I haven't been able to keep anything solid down since. It's been 3 days. Massive amount of extra bile, choking at night, coughing. I try to eat, and 20 minutes later, I'm full of bile, and I can't drink anything, and I can't feel my good "drop" like I usually do. I was able to keep a couple Protein shakes down and a yogurt shake down, but nothing solid.... I tried again, and I had a TON of bile, and ended up vomiting at the restaurant... On my last fill, my doctor said "wait it out until 4 weeks even if you have problems" Give your stomach a chance to acclimate to your new fill". Has anyone have anything similar happen to them? Will my stomach calm down so I could feel good, and eat and feel the food "drop" like I used to? I'm freaking out...wondering if I have gallstones, or if I just ate something too fast and now my stomach needs a break... -
1 month post-sleeve & down 34 lbs!
Geof01 replied to theladyslipper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm one month post as well. Now that I can actually eat the whole game is changing. I was doing about 700 calories and 65 gms of protein. 2nd day back at work. I manage a retirement home and i'm on duty to oversee three meals a day. Today I ate 890 calories and 106 gms protein. I was told to get at least 60 gms, but how much is too much? I haven't lost any weight since Friday. -
Hi all! My name is Stephanie and I was sleeved on January 29th, 2014. Today I am 6 days post op and feeling ok. I only spent 2 days in the hospital and had no complications. Gas was my biggest problem and still is. Wish it would go away! My stomach is really messing with my head by gurgling and growling ALL DAY LONG. I feel hungry, so I eat. Most of the time eating makes me sick. No problems with Water or sugar free Powerade, etc., but I will crave something more substantial and be sorry I ate a creamy Soup. So back to water and then I get hungry again and it starts all over. I'm confused whether it's head hunger, why I feel hungry...all that. Energy level is ok and today I didn't have any pain. I walk a mile every morning. I'm having trouble getting Protein in because I am tired of Protein shakes. Getting used to a life that doesn't revolve around food is so hard!

I had my surgery 3/3/2014 - wondering if anyone can advise
Lamonica2013 replied to Austin123's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Once I was a month out my Dr had my eat 2 eggs and a protein shake a day. A couple weeks later I was able to eat whatever I wanted, protein first of course. Couple weeks after that I started with 2 oz of meat and a 1/4 a cup of veggies though usually I could not get in the veggie most times because the meat made me full. Then in 2 weeks later I increased the meat to 3 oz which is what I eat now and a bite or 2 of veggies and I'm full. However a lot of the time I can only get in the meat. I still drink 1 protein shake a day but I split it in half because I drink ensure. It's the only protein. Shake I can handle. My best advice to you is make sure when you eat you get in that protein and as much as you can. It's the most important part of our diet. I do not eat potatoes or carbs. Not yet. I had my surgery on Feb 5 -
Lurker, First time posting. Had First Adjustment YAY !
READYIN2010 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. I usually lurk and read a lot of the posts, but today I'm ready to start putting in comments. I got banded on 03/30/2010. I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks (344lbs-334lbs) after being banded then after that my appetite shot up and that lovely feeling of being full and satisfied went down. I maintened my weight loss surprisingly cause I thought for sure I would gain. I know for sure I would have if I did not have the band since I ate a lot. I also walked 1 mile a day too. So I read in the forum this happens to everyone and I felt better, plus my doctor assured me that my stomach went down from the surgery swelling and that soon as I was adjusted I would see a major difference. So I had my first adjustment two days ago on 05/4/2010 and right away I noticed the difference in not being hungry. I have lost 2 lbs in 2 days already. Finally moving ! I get full from a small cup of jello, can you believe it ? Before my adjustment I could have a protein shake and jello. I can only drink half a protein shake now. I'm so excited. My doctor gives adjustments every 4 weeks and I'm glad about that because I have read some people only get every 5 months WOW ! I'm very glad I made this decision for the surgery. The easy part has always been losing the weight, but keeping it off was my biggest trouble. I lose 60 and gain back 65 in a year. Now I no longer have that worry thanks to the lapband. Good luck everyone and I look forward to reading more stories on here. This site is wonderful because I can relate so well. Take care. -

None of us lose at a constant or steady rate. I was sleeved in April and my weight loss has slowed with periodic stalls, but the physical changes I have been undergoing have been tremendous. I am becoming more mobile and more active and am still shrinking. Just continue to follow your program. Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. And, exercise. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall -
Prednisone among other things is what got me here....... I am having a severe flare of my autoimmune disorder and have.held off increasing my prednisone as long as possible, well increasing it and a few days I have seen my hunger increase almost by double, my calories have gone from around 400 to around 780 and I'm controlling myself. This is a concern because I can not work out very much right now due to complications and my autoimmune disorder, question any veterans encountered this prednisone use and how do you handle this how do you not give in to the increasing constant hunger, I have tried increasing fluids, adding unflavored Protein but the scale has slowed and I read someones post that their nut said we should not be consuming more than 500 calories if we are not working out post op ? I'm feeling lost so if any one has any insight please let me know Cyn-shakiraa Dos 12-17-12

Protein shakes after surgery
Woodtouch replied to khaled's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was Sleeved Tuesday and am doing well. Living mostly on Isopure Protein Liquid, Water, broth and small amount of SF Jello. Gas and bloating are going down a small amount each day, Gas X doesn't seam to do much. How many strips at a time do you take? Maybe I need to walk more. What is your best tasting favorite brand of Broth? Thanks, Craig
