So, since I started the pre-op program (3 months in my case), I have been trying to really limit myself on what I am eating, taking the nutritionist's advice on what to eat. Has anyone tried really limiting your caloric intake similar to what you would be limited to following surgery? I understand that you would really struggle with an all liquid diet or a diet of only 400 or so calories without the help of the surgery, but I am looking to see if anyone tried, successfully to approach it in this manner? I think it would be a great way to ease into the new diet following and not be such a shock to your system or daily routine disruption. I have been trying to stick with this philosophy and fortunately never had an eating disorder like binging or depressed eating. I am simply a case of being able to eat too much without feeling full, and eating all the wrong foods..... Initially in the beginning of this "experiment" the first week or two was tough becasue I had to fight all the cravings for sweets and carb heavy foods but now, 4 weeks or so from starting, it is MUCH easier. My cravings are gone, for the most part. The other day, I did have a craving for a PB and marshmallow fluff sandwich (sounds strange but tastes soooo good) so i made one....only to take a small bit and had it off to my wife who can afford to eat it! let me tell you how hard it was to have it in my hand and not eat it! But, I took a small bit of it and it completely satisified the craving and I no longer wanted it. At this point, I eat 1 Protein bar for Breakfast, a handfull of raw almonds for a mid morning snack, a cup of chili for lunch, another handful of almonds for an afternoon snack, and then a zero fat, high protein yogurt for dinner. I fill the rest of the time with about 80-100 oz of Water and that's it.... Anyway, let me know your experience with the calorie limited, high protein, low carb attempt prior to surgery if you have been able to follow through with it and if it helped following surgery.

Yeah, this liquid diet is a little...well...boring to say the least! It's not forever tho. I got some light minute made lemonade and sugar free popcicles. Blend one popsiscle and about 4oz of lemonade for an icee. It's pretty yummy. My problem is all the sweet/cold stuff. I am REALLY craving some savory, hot food...something I can CHEW...the broth is getting OLD! I've read of several people chewing food and spitting it out. I don't think I'm strong enough to spit it out! So, I'm staying away from it! OK...rambling now! Best of luck to you!

jeeze I wonder why some doctors choose different diets than others? my diet is 14 days...the first 3 days was 3 slimfast a day and 1 Protein shake and the next 10 days are 2 slimfast (I use carnation instant breakfast) and 1 small garden salad, and 1 Protein Shake I never realized how many commercials are about food until I was starving to death lol:bored:

Transition from Liquids too easy!!
Sharilo replied to Ready to Go's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every surgeon really is different. Mine specifically told me that I should be losing 1 - 3 pounds a week after the first week. So, they don't believe in the "time for healing" way of thinking. Once I started losing, it's been averaging about 2 lbs/week. I get my first fill on the 19th. I'm sooo looking forward to it. The hunger between meals hasn't been as bad as it was, but I've been drinking lots of protein so I think that's helping. -

2 Week Pre-Op Diet
MinaT replied to Iwant2Bthatgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Drink a lot of Water, Propel 0 calorie 0 carb also was helpful. Brush your teeth and use a non-alcohol base mouthwash, Biotene works best for me. I also floss a lot, nobody eats right after they floss. When Ketosis hits the breath can get pretty nasty and dry mouth is the worst. * added - Decaff Peppermint or whatever flavor you like tea with a little Truvia or spenda is good to stop the craving and growling. I'm on 3 Protein shakes a day only on day 9 of 14. Day 3 & 4 were the hardest. Keep busy, walk and don't think about it. -

LapbandChica replied to kayrenae's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep looking at your long term goal. I just had my surgery on Monday. It's hard but you can do it. Treat yourself to some Tropical smoothie cafe if you have one near you. They make a banging protein smoothie -
Ugh, it came highly recommended but I cannot stand this weird aftertaste Is there anything similar ( not shakes) with that much Protein that doesn't taste like poo?

Oh, try websites for sample packs. Most gave them. Try first. Protein powder can be expensive and your tastes are different from everyone else. What I or anyone likes might not appeal to you. BariatricChoice.com Mybariatricpantry.com (great stuff! And you get cash rewards ) Syntrax.com unjury.com Bariatricadvantage.com Also try waldenfarms.com. They sell zero calorie, zero carb, zero fat and gluten free products. I love their super fruits dressing. They have salad dressings, fruit spreads, chocolate, strawberry and others syrups. They also have wonderful customer service in case you don't like something (I've never returned a thing) but I've seen on their fb that they will. Whew! I think that's all I have! -
Recommened Protein Shakes
BerryChic replied to sweetcheeks14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I had known about Ensure High Protein shakes when I was in the liquid phase. Premixed, smooth, not gritty and no aftertaste. 25g protein, 5g sugar, 2.5g fat and 210 calories. I like the milk chocolate flavor. I am about 14 weeks out and drink one almost every day for a Meal Replacement. They also have vanilla, dark chocolate and strawberry flavors. A little pricey at about 2.75/bottle but we used to spend twice that at McDonald's for lunch remember? -
I had this exact same thing happen to me this morning! I'm 30 days post-op today, and so far, I have lost weight every single day (except for the first couple of days after surgery.) All I've had for a month are Protein drinks, yogurt and a few pureed Soups - 800 calories max. So HOW did I gain 1.7 pounds this morning????? Nobody can convince me that losing weight is as simple as calories in/calories out! I fully expect to drop that 1.7 pounds in a day or two.......... but really, GAINING on 800 calories/day?

I have the typical story...got preg and married at an early age..of course it didnt work out so 1 son and 2 miscarriges later I was starting over. I started to lose weight then got remarried and bam here comes another baby I have gained 130 pounds since high school and I am beyond sick of looking at it. I have been remarried for 8 years now and am the happiest i have ever been except my weight. I have looked into the lap bad along with gastric, sleeve and many other options. I am confident that lap band is the safest and best for me so after years of researching and wanting I am finally doing it!! November will change the rest of my life. I want to be able to go to my kids school and eat lunch with them without worrying that the kids in their class is going to make fun of them for have a "fat mom". I am scared, nervous, happy and excited all at the same time. The "what ifs are playing in the back of my head..what if I dont lose anything...what if i have a bad reaction to it..what if someone finds out that i am doing this (no i have not told a single sole except my husband for fear of being judged)... So wish me luck that i can get more sleep and that this WILL work

How did you prepare for pre-op diet?
Bubbapaw replied to knl8923's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am scheduled for surgery on the 15th of January. I started the liquid diet yesterday, and keep cheating. I drink cups of broth, but am still hungry. I had one Protein shake. I am scared if I do not show any willpower now--how will I do after? This seems to be as hard as it was for me to quit smoking 14 years ago! Thank you for this site, just typing this helps! -
3 meals. 2 snacks. Lots of protein and lots of water!

I did. I used then and still use now, Splenda and sometimes Stevia. I used pre-mixed vanilla or chocolate Protein shakes as the creamer. Sure was a great way to get past the hunger. I did. Tired of meal replacement shakes!

I kno its horrible but getting sick now so soon after surgery is even worse ..ur body has been through major trauma .and it needs all the proteins and supplements to heal ..its only for another few weeks ..uve come this far ???? -
I would highly recommend a hotel Congrats on your date! The only advice I can offer is use the search and you can find lists to help you pack, lists of things to purchase that you'll have ready for after surgery. I bought soups..mostly broths and veggie type soups I could strain, popsicles, sf pudding, protein shakes (take it easy on the protein shakes because your taste will likely change and you'd be stuck with a powder you're not going to drink) and sf jello. After your surgery, walk and get in your fluids! Good luck!

Sorry, most doctors would say no. Remember juice is all carbs and the most preop diets try to eliminate most carbs. You want to force your body to burn fat. It prefers to burn carbs first, Protein, then fat. If you are eating mostly protein the body is forced to after it burns the protein to turn to fat. Also post op most doctors don't want you drinking calories. The band will never stop you from drinking calories. The entire point of the band is to help you eat less solids.

Hi I'm almost 4 wks post op. The liquid things I have besides protein drinks are chicken broth and Crystal Light. I buy the ones to make 2qts per packet pour in 4 Dasani bottles mix then pour back into the bottles. That's my 64 oz for the day goal ready to take with me anywhere. You probably know that there are many many flavors. I like the fruity kinds. Lots of other kinds of water flavorers such as ProPel, too. Hang in there!

I get sleeved on 9-20-2012. I get moments of anxiety where I question whether I've made the right decision or not. I know that I have. I guess I'm faced with this same anxiety when it comes to any big decision in my life. I start my liquid diet this Thursday the 6th for two weeks. Friday is Pre-Op. Friday the 14th is my EGD and then the 20th is D-Day! I went through a whole month of waiting for the appointments to get here and now they are here and the anxiety is sneaking in! I guess I'm excited AND scared at the same time . I am looking forward to being healthy. It's not a size or a look that is my goal. It is to be off medications and living healthy. I want to have the ability to go for a walk with my husband and not worry about passing out 1/2 way through the adventure. I want to go to the zoo without passing out or having to sit every 5 minutes because of back and knee pain. I want to fly without infringing upon my neighbor's space. It's been too long coming for me. Early on when I made my decision to get sleeved, I went out and purchased some protein powder and a few other things 'just to see' how horrific it was going to be. Honestly, it isn't going to be that bad for me. Since I HATE chocolate and sweets for the most part, it's going to be hard for that reason. I don't think the protein shakes are that horrible especially since I'll be using Vanilla flavored and you can add just about anything to that to make it palatable and versatile. My husband and grown sons are amazing with their support. Only one other person knows and he is a co-worker. The only reason I told him is because he's getting sleeved on 10-23-2012. We'll be sleeve partners at work. I'm lucky in that respect. The only thing that I worry about is when the pounds start dropping off that I don't sabotage myself. I see a bit of success and then I have to go and ruin it by overeating to celebrate. Crazy, I know. I can do this. I will succeed. This forum has really been a source of comfort and knowledge. I thank you all!

Hi Joy! I'm also going on10/11. I let my surgeon tell me about all options and we decided the VSG was the best fit for me due to digestion issues (he didnt want to involve cutting the intestines) and history of success in weight loss, but not in maintenance or obtaining goal. The lap band wasn't an option, I have 2 coworkers who lost weight at first, maybe half-way to goal, then they started to gain weight. That's the story of my life! I am scared, yet so excited to have this done!

Hi Tracey! Welcome and congratulations! Your story is much like mine except I still have my thyroid (it is just non functioning). I also take 300mcg of Synthroid due to Hashimotos disease. I can assume that my thyroid contributed to my weight gain and failed attempts at prior weight loss. My surgery was on January 13th and I have done well with it as I am confident you will too. I have gained a lot of valuable information from folks here...just explore and read. It was such a comfort and inspiration pre surgery. Everyone is anxious about the hospital experience I suppose. The time spent in the hospital seems to fly by...my experience was much better than I could have imagined. The pain and misery I experienced in just existing made the pain of surgery doable. My abdomen was pretty tender for about 6 days then it was smooth sailing, actually. There have been a few days of exhaustion since but no more misery. Pre surgery, I could (and would) sleep at will but now my energy is much more abundant. Days following surgery, I did crave various food but that has since passed. Getting required Protein in post surgery has been a small challenge but if you track your intake through myfitnesspal, you eventually find a formula that works plus it is a great tool to log and track calories and nutrition. It has definitely been life changing already...in wonderful ways. Stay positive. This tool is a phenomenal gift! It's not always easy but it is worth it...YOU are worth it!! Blessings to you!
