    Ketogenic diet post sleeve?

My understanding on keto is shaky but I know Paleo. Paleo takes the approach of only eating food that was accessible prior to the onset of agriculture. So no potatoes, no bread, no rice, no corn. Also, no dairy. Only grass fed or free range meat. There isn't any focus on macros. You basically eat until full whenever you feel like eating. A good resource to look into on it is nerdfitness. Keto seems to be pretty much like paleo, but with more focus on macros. So you eat the same things, but you focus on making sure you are getting a certain amount of fat and protein in.

    I'm 60 +

Hi all over 60ers. I finally had my bypass surgery on the 20th. As a matter of fact, I'm just now getting d/fed from the hospital. Just a quick note about my experience so far. You will have some pain, but bearable . The one thing that no one through your entire pre-op training tells you is that you will have a lot of blood in your stool which is very liquidy. Please don't be alarmed like I was. I know this isn't the best topic to discuss, but I wish someone would have told me. The first 4 times I went there was what I thought was a lot of blood. It finally stopped. You will probably feel bloated . Got to go now . I think I'm getting sprung from the hospital. I will follow up with my progress.

    Alcohol?

I have never been a big drinker nor will I ever be! I'm not concerned about alcoholism bc I do not have an addictive personality. I was never a food addict, my WLS was due to other medical issues. A drink every now and again will be fine just as before.

    Peas/Avacado

I thinned my refried beans out with bone broth. As I progressed, I topped them with melted Trader Joe's lite cheese and a dollop of reduced fat Greek yogurt. Delicious [emoji39]. My (almost adult) niece agreed when I fed them to her after she had her tonsils out. Ah - and don't forget that hummus is also puréed beans, though I usually cut that with yogurt.
  5. So today while I was watching this female Asian longhorned beetle oviposite her egg I was thinking about the science behind WLS. How many experiments aka..clinical trials have been done, are still being done, and will be done in the future to help doctors figure out the complex mysteries of this disease we call obesity. It blows my mind to even try to think of all the variables involved in the design of these trials.

My research focuses on this beetle, a much simpler organism, and yet it can take days of thought and reading current published research to determine the variables that need to be considered and controlled during a planned experiment. Sometimes we even design pre-experiments just to figure out whether something is going to effect something else before we run the main experiment. All of this thinking has made me realize how little we really know. Why has my diabetes gone into remission after surgery? This surgery has done what following a low carb diet alone could not do, normalize my blood sugars minus any medications. I haven't had time to read all of the published literature on this subject, but I would like to.

My mind is trained to looked for patterns in data so of course this is the way I am approaching my journey after this surgery. I am logging everything I eat, drink, and my exercise. I will export the data to excel and graph it to see if I can figure out how my body works now in relation to theses things and weight loss.  I know for some people, maybe most, this is not something they would want to do. It may seem excessive and time consuming, but I hope to learn something that will be useful to me during the maintenance phase.

I am increasingly more convinced that low carb is going to be the best diet for me to follow long term. I just don't see any reason to test the waters when I am doing so well right now. I have zero cravings for sugar, bread, rice, pasta... my energy levels are good, my bs are excellent, and I am losing weight.  These are my musings for today, 5 weeks post-op.

Love this post :) Took me some time to realize the same things. Like any endeavour to change it requires mindfulness and dedication which I can clearly see that you possess, and documentation is your best form of accountability. My recommendation for anyone who has transitioned back to a full-solids diet and is looking to drop weight in a healthier fashion would be to follow the practices of a ketogenic (keto) diet. Really helped me during my stall periods and I always felt great! Google or Pinterest are great places to start your research :)

I hope so @Newme17 because I don't know where I would be now without your support and friendship 😊

I will definitely post my graphs and share my information. I will probably wait until I have at least 3 months of data.

These beginning phases of our post-op diets are really similar to the Keto diet. I figure I have gone this long without eating those types of carbs and I feel great, so why not continue? I am eating all of my veggies for sure.

Most people don't like bugs...lol I am known as the bug lady to my friends. For the record I hate bad bugs like roaches, mosquitoes, ect

    New Job Opportunity

I haven't applied to anything post op-- but I did get a significant promotion after losing weight-- and my annual increases post op are greater % than pre op...meanwhile the reviews themselves have remained consistent in scoring and comments...funnily enough I was working harder when I was heavier-- maybe bc I was less social then? Anyway it's not like we all didn't know there was a fat tax levied against heavy people... just glad I'm not being penalized anymore
  7. OMG, RIGHT??? WTF??? Did the same thing, had leggings on under heavy jeans and lots of change in my pockets. Oh, I'm so sorry about having to be that weight for TWO years, that's crazy and not fair. With Kaiser, and how our insurance is, I'll only have to pay $250.00 total, that's it, but just getting to that point and having to do ALL of these other BS test is a waste of my time. I'd love to hear from you and how everything goes. Thank you so much for understanding. I'm glad you are at that point to get it done soon
  8. I chose sleeve bc I was more nervous about the re-routing of my intestines being more invasive and dumping syndrome scares me. I'm three weeks tomorrow and happy with my choice. I've already lost 28# since the surgery. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    High heart rate after surgery??

I was tachy afterwards too n they said I was dehydrated plus pain bc I was stubborn n didn't want any narcs

    Pre op diets

Yes, I do believe it is very common. Some people look at it like a BS hurdle to overcome (AKA me), some people look at it like an opportunity to lose weight in advance of surgery, see @blizair09. Now, I don't regret not using that time to actually, ya know, lose weight, but I would highly recommend using that time to get off as much weight as you can BEFORE surgery. If I could go back in time I would probably kick myself in the ballz for not doing that. Best of luck!!

    Boob lift / Extra skin

My doctor told me prior to surgery that I will need skin removed from my belly. He told me every time I get irritation under there to go to my doctor and have it documented. That way when its time the insurance will cover it because it is out of medical necessity. They will not cover a tummy tuck though. If you're getting irritation under your breasts you may also be able to get a reduction but probably not a lift. It's all about cosmetic vs medical necessity worth the insurance companies. Honestly I'm hoping my won't be as bad bc I don't want surgery ever again lol. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    diabetes meds after surgery?

I was on 2000mg metformin and 1.2 ml of Victoza and I haven't taken any since that day before my surgery. My bs are completely normal. I haven't had any bs above 110 and my fasting bs is almost always in the 80's. I have read that this happens more often for people that were diabetic less than 5 years and not on insulin. However any reduction in meds would be great.
  14. I had Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas and wasn't required to undergo a supervised weight loss program during the pre-approval process. My friend had a different BC/BS health plan and underwent the 6-month supervised weight loss visits. She was not required to lose weight; however, she had to have 6 documented visits with a physician, nurse practitioner or PA that recorded her weight. She actually gained weight during the process. She pre-qualified for the sleeve at 218 pounds and ended up at 231 pounds a week before surgery. She lost 7 pounds on the pre-op diet and weighed 224 on surgery day.
  15. I can relate.. nearly one year out and 95 lbs gone. People say you look great, you don't need to lose anymore. Someone told me the other day, "wow you are really skinny now", I don't even know how to reply, I just say thanks but still think I'm the fat girl. My mom told me that I don't see myself like I am now Bc I saw myself much bigger for so long.

    Diabetes and liquid diet

I am not nor have I ever been on insulin, but I am a type 2 diabetic. I stopped my medication the night before surgery to prevent lows. My sugar actually went high the first night probably due to the stress of surgery. The second night my bs went low and I had to drink some juice to bring it up. So I would definitely be talking to your doctor to find out how to manage your bs during theses changes with your diet.

    Breaking down

Stay strong ! Im doing the optifast pre liquid diet as well .. the first 3 days were the worst !!! But if you make it through those then your good ! Ive been doing it since June 5th and my surgery is July 3rd so im on it for almost a month . Ive lost 10 pounds so far . But i slipped a few times . But if your going to slip make sure its not with like french fries or something .. i had a piece of grilled chicken the 4th day bc my headache was horrible and it definitely helped. Whenever i feel like i cant do i look at instagram pages of people who have done this surgery and their success it really helps or I distract myself with like a computer game or a game on my phone something to keep me busy . I also have been trying to stay outside alot and not in the house with a kitchen full of food. Its hard but youll make it !!! Add me on Instagram we can follow each others journeys ! 3 months post op - discouraged

Every 3 hours sounds easier then it is turning out to be ☹️ Everyone suggests the good fats, I use Olive Oil when cooking but don't eat nuts nor nut butters. I am not a fan of anything but peanut butter and I haven't allowed myself to have it yet. (I have a tendency of over eating it). I get enough protein bc that is mostly all I eat.
  19. Lovenox injections are the blood clot preventative, but the only reason I will be on them post op is bc I have had a PE ( pulmonary Embolism) last October from shoulder surgery. I have never heard anything about a gallstone preventative. I hope this helps some[emoji3] My surgery is 6/21/17, next Wednesday (RNY)

    VSG & autoimmune diseases?

I have MS! My initial presentation was very unusual in that I went deaf, so it took some time to diagnose (2012). As a result, I suffer from vertigo and nausea from my active lesion. I decided to go on medication last year after I started to get more physical symptoms, though thankfully my clinical symptoms have remained stable. (MS is apparently weird like that according to my neurologists). Exercise is difficult for me due to the fact that a) I fatigue more quickly than I used to b)I can have significant problems with my balance c) I am carrying extra weight gained through a high risk pregnancy that saw me hospitalised, fed an extremely high calorie diet and hooked up to drips in order TO gain weight (I was very ill and nearly lost my baby) and d) a combination of steroid medications I have had to take for a bunch of symptoms to do with MS (not my interferons) and for depression and anxiety So my eating habits are weird. I find it difficult to eat most of the time because I feel nauseated. This means I need to take lots of vitamins to avoid malnutrition. I would generally avoid food if possible, but have a lovely husband who makes sure I eat. However, when I am NOT feeling nauseated, I will eat whatever I like! It's ridiculous. I don't think that in my life I've ever had a sweet tooth (I'm a savoury fiend), yet I will crave something like chocolate and must eat it. And as for the food I DO like; shut the gate. I'm like the Netflix and no chill of food if I feel well! Obviously, whenever this happens, I get extremely sick. But it's ridiculous. My body has gone into some kind of starvation mode and just wants to feed itself. Anyway, after lots of tests, and long consultations with all of my specialists I'm going in for a sleeve. The hope is that with the pre-op diet, the new way of eating, the weight loss relieving some of the pressure on my body that my 'metabolism' for want of a better word, will be able to reset. That I will be able to stick to better patterns of eating - fueling my body correctly and helping it to combat this disorder. Im feeling hopeful. I see this as an opportunity to reset and give myself a better chance to make my body stronger and more healthy despite whatever little brain farts it has along the way to make it not as reliable into the future as it should be.
  21. I want to be a fed but a different branch. I'm desperately hoping the surgery will help fix the health problems holding me back so I can pass the physical exam. It's the only thing I can see myself doing and I'm too young to settle.

    TPN

There must be some underlying cause as to why you needed to be fed intravenously in the first place. Still, sorry to hear about that.. I've never heard of this before your post, it seems extremely rare if caused by the surgery. Apparently one of the side effects of this is liver disease, so I hope they have you on some type of anti-fibrotic medication to slow the progression into cirrhosis -- I heard some are coming down the line. Initially I was going to be involved in trials in a few years but my liver has healed substantially making it moot.

    Sick of being sick!

Yesterday I had my 20 something abdominal surgery after I had a botched gastric bypass in 2003. I have I port implanted in my chest to keep me hydrated and fr TPN ( food ) and other medications that basically keep me alive. I spent 3 months in hospice 5yrs ago and now heading back down that path! The fed say I'm out of options. Anyone else going through something like this!?!

    Burning Reflux - Horrible

I can relate to the photo you posted. Right after surgery I wanted to throw up all the time just bc of the heartburn! My dr told me to do over the counter nexium but if it continues passed a month they would give an RX. THANKFULLY it's gone away. Call and ask the dr for omeprazole.
