    Lap Band and Eating Disorders

I can only offer some advise. Please see your doctor and get your band loosened. beeing too tight can lead to complications. I binge sometimes but it normally occures when i just dont eat enough. Your body feels deprived and wants some nourishment. I am not banded just yet and I'm hoping the band will help me resolve some of these issues.

    Need Some Serious Advice!

There is a thread on here about Bougies. I think they range from 28-54? Most use 34 36, my dr uses a 40. I have had no complications and I had a hiatal hernia and lots of strictures from previous gall bladder surgery. Losing steady since 9/6, about 4 lbs a week. (I lost 20 in the two weeks before surgery so I am not losing as quickly but I am satisfied) I start eating real food this week but not too excited about it. Do it!

    Vsg Versus Roux-En-Y ?

I know many people have had their lives saved by the RNY, so I don't mean to talk it down at all. I just couldn't do it... and here is my partial list: - I was a revision from the band, and the complications revising to the rny were much riskier - I had a pouch when i was banded and it SUCKED. I have no idea if the pouch for the RNY behaves the same way, but I suspect it does. I don't want to vomit up food for unpredictable reasons. I spent 10 years in that hell and decided I just couldn't do it. - Mentally, I could get used to the idea that my stomach was too big and just needed to be reduced but i could never get comfortable with the RNY procedure - gave me the heebie geebies. Irrational, yes, but it was a key factor. -20 years ago the woman who was our daycare provider had the RNY. In those days they were done open, so recovery was a big huge deal. I know it isn't the same now, but i can't quite shake the memories of how ill she was and how long it took her to recover (she looked awesome though, lost all of her excess weight!) - I was convinced by the studies available that my chances of success are nearly as good with the sleeve compared to the RNY, but my risks were considerably lower. That just made sense to me. One piece of advice is to consider a surgeon who has a thriving "sleeve" practice. I did that and feel that their after care and all that was spot on for a sleever.

Dr. Yves Manigat - Dr. Manigat

I agree - Dr. Manigat is a great surgeon and is dedicated to his patients and takes his time with each and everyone so that they understand the procedure before and after. He is very busy and you may have to wait - but it is worth it. I have had the LapBand over 2 years with no complications and have been at goal for a long time.
  5. I have not had any medical complications since being banded....I have spoken with ER people and one Doc in particular and they say they are not that familiar with the band and not always sure what to do....if you call that a complication....so they generally do a complete unfil....whether it is warranted or not...then instruct you to go see your Surgeon.... I have a friend who went to the ER, they were not sure if he was having cardiac issues or a CVA....they immediately did a complete un fill.... When I travel out of the country I carry a syringe with me with a large bore needle.....

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

even though I have had some complications I would do it all over again. weighing less is just magical.

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

I am thrilled to see such positive responses! Often people seem to use these forums to emphasize the complications and revisions, yet not one of us would trade our banded life today.. What a great endorsement for the weighty (ahem) issues we have all gone through!...Physical and mental metamorphosis. Many responses were from seasoned bandsters.... (All are so truly welcome... )But years down the road it is a different path than that excitable honeymoon phase ( we all seem to have that golden year or so) and I appreciate hearing your stories. It helps me daily. Please keep posting about life

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

Anyone having WLS should realize that no surgeries are guaranteed, and that you can die as a result of elective surgery complication. I was scared to undergo surgery, but after a point you have to weight the risks vs. the rewards. My doctor laid out the risks, and the chances for success and what I could realistically expect based on averages. I'm glad I did NOT have the band 15 years ago--there have been too many advances in that time and problems with the band have diminished over time. I am glad I carefully researched where, and who, would do my surgery. They need to be there when I need them in the future. I'm glad I had the band when I did. If it fails, i would consider another surgery, perhaps a sleeve, if the doctor is comfortable doing the procedure. Regressing back to my old self is not an option. I honestly believe than any WLS is an attempt to mask over underlying problems that will be unraveled as medical research continues and when there is a better understanding of the underlying problems that lead to obesity. Simple advice based on stereotypes (eat less, be more active, etc) do little to help. Maybe someday a cure will be as simple as taking a pill twice a day. But, at a certain age you realize that future cures will be decades in the future before they are developed, tested and FDA approved. And then the real learning curve begins.

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

Yes, but if I had a chance to do it over I would go with the sleeve. I was emptied do to complications and my fill center has closed down. I can't find anyone to do a fill in my area and after 5 years of keeping the weight off I have regained most of it in just one year. Trying to start over but it's pretty depressing.
  10. Hi again people! Anyone out there NOT have any Gallbladder problems or Heartburn? How many months or years post-op are you? Hoping to see people who are a long way out that do NOT suffer from these complications! Thanks
  11. Look at it this way. You can be satisfied with 1/2 slice of pizza in one sitting rather than half the pizza or the whole pizza. You can still come back and eat the other half later. And enjoying food in smaller portions actually makes the food MUCH more enjoyable for me. Some people are actually turned off by food they used to love. I wouldn't worry about that. If you don't like it, you don't like it. There are a bajillion varieties of foods left. As you become healthier, you will naturally gravitate towards healthier foods. Your "head hunger" will likely still be there and that's something we all have to deal with. Don't think of the post-surgery life as "giving up" food. You're still making a choice about what you eat. No one can force you to eat or not eat something post-surgery. Your doctor and nutritionist have probably given you guidelines however. Some guidelines are very restrictive in the beginning for the safety of your stomach as it heals. You have the choice to follow them or not. I chose to follow them to avoid potential complications. Yes, if you continue to eat that pizza every day, even in smaller portions across the day, you could still gain back a significant amount of weight. But that's the same battle we all fight. The surgery allows you stop eating after a smaller amount and ask yourself, "Am I still physically hungry?" From there on out, it's still your choice.

    What If I Fail?

I felt that way too. For myself I found out the following: 1. Don't concentrate on how much you have left, look at how much you lost! 2. Don't keep junk in the house 3. Don't listen to others (I get everything from ew fat @$$ to 'how much more weight do you plan on losing??!') listen to your body, not the number on the scale or your tag 4. Do listen to your NUT. He/she is there for a reason! 5. Do listen to your body. I can't tell you how much I said mmmmmm yummy just one more bite... And it physically hurt after 6. If you crave something, do NOT deny yourself of it when you are eating normal foods again. I'm not a huge sweets person, but if I want that chocolate dipped strawberry, daggit I'm going to eat it!! Otherwise, I'll eat just about everything else because I can't satisfy that craving! I have my off days (truth: Saturday I had half a blt, half a beef Jerky stick, a 20 oz bottle of soda and a 12 oz bottle of Smirnoff.. Nothing else) but you learn from them and make them few and far between! (I felt physically drained and blah the next day. Today I ate great and felt happy and energized!) I guess one good thing from having complications, I don't take anything for granted anymore and vow neverrrrrrrrrr to gain the weight back, not worth going through again or for nothing!

    Prayed About It...well...

I too struggled with this. I prayed about it but as you said I didn't really wait for an answer I just kept expecting God to step in at anytime should this not be for me. Being a minister in my church, I know I have an even greater responsibility and I never wanted my decision to affect the members of the congregation that are suffering with their weight. One day I was on this site and still feeling kinda unsure and I found a post someone had posted about how God answers our prayers regarding the things that concern us, our weight concerns us. The post went on to say how this surgery is a tool that God created to assist his children in an area where we have been weak. I had been looking for a sign that would say don't do it, and never expected a word that would tell me it's okay to do it. I told no one but my Pastor ( husband's blessing as well of course) that I was having surgery and I didn't even go into details, but I knew I needed the prayers of my Pastor to cover me while I was going through this process. I prayed and ensured that I was in right standings with the Lord prior to surgery and I accepted that if it was my time it was just my time, however, I knew that the devil would continue to try and feed doubt and unbelief up until the last moment. I am one week post-op and the only complications I had were caused by a nurse who was just trying to help me! I will say this, God tells us to cast all our cares on Him! I found out about the sleeve and had surgery in less than two months. I am 17lbs closer to not being overweight and experiencing health issues brought on by my poor habits. Is there another option, of course there is always another option thus free will. You are doing the right thing both sprirtually and naturally. Do your research and do your prayer search and should you decide surgery is right for you, yes you may still be nervous about the surgery you will have a peace about your decision! Remember the blessings of the Lord make it rich and addedth no sorrow! Best wishes and keep us posted.

    Hubby Is Mad

My husband said he didn't approve but he would be supportive while I was losing. I had major complications in the end. He still gives me alot of greif about having a surgery that almost killed me. I personally would do it again. I don't know what more I could have done to help him approve, he absolutely refuses to go to any meetings or support groups with me. I spent about a month in the hospital and he came up 2 times during my last stay of 3 weeks.

    Anyone From Ky Louisville Area

Wow! Why did you go to Mexico? I've noticed several people having surgery there. How did things go? Any complications?
  19. I had GS surgery done in MX in Feb 2017. I've lost 55 lbs and have plateaued/stalled for the last 4 months and I still have lots of fat inches left to lose. I have a lot of food allergies (confirmed by blood work) and the "nutritionist" the Dr connected me with has no idea how to help me and I've been going it alone. I read the posts here about what someone eats on a daily basis and I can't eat over 3/4 of it. Add to my allergies is the complication that the surgery didn't remove my hunger like 99.5 % of patients. I've been hungry since day one. In fact my stomach growls so loud that co-workers can hear it. I'd like someone to brainstorm with, to talk menu plans with, to talk portion sizes with, strategy with, etc. So who do you recommend that I can do an online, remote appointment with? Who are your rock star nutritionists?

    Another post

Re-read your opening complications-- the google and internet doctors- the family- you have allowed to cause doubt and fear, Don't have the YEARS of experience that you pay for from professionals. This is a no brainer ! You cannot leave it as is. At minimum you have to remove the band. The conversion is where you need to decide to stand up or not. Are you doing this for your health or for another reason ? You have to be strong in your conviction - ONLY you will experience it, tough thru if necessary. The decision is what's in your best interest long term. Only you can decide.

    Band or Sleeve?

Too many complications with the band, not good. Chose the sleeve after doing a lot of research. Best choice in my opinion! Not as many side effects but that can also depend on the person.
  22. I had my band placed 6 weeks ago. First 2 weeks were great! Then the trouble started - couldn't keep anything down for 3 weeks, was told it was "soft tissue" swelling - last week doc went it to "unbuckle" the band - and I came out with a drain, NG tube, antibiotics, and doc said "your stomach looked like a hard piece of rubber - an abscess had formed next to the band btw my stomach and liver - finally went home - no band - just lots of antibiotics to hopefully keep the abscess from returning and aspiration pneumonia in the process. Lap band surgery - $3200 for "what insurance doesn't pay"; complications - 1 week out of work with no pay - hopefully living through this with no more hope of losing weight - priceless. I have lost 25lbs in this nightmare of 6 weeks and still keep nothing down except liquids - and sometimes the antibiotics. The band is an invasive, tricky surgery and although my surgeon states she has never seen someone reject the band like this - I don't believe her. I would NEVER recommend this surgery to anyone. I said 2 months ago that I was going to lose the weight or die trying - it looks like the latter is more likely to be true. Orange Coast Memorial Center for Obesity is not where you want to place your life.

    messed up band surgery

I'm so sorry this happened to you, but so happy to see that you were able to use insurance for your band. I know it is hard to see any positive in this situation, but the fact that your insurance covered the initial band placement means that they will also cover correction of the complications and even conversion to RNY if you choose to go that route. I know the risks w/the band are very low, but complications do happen (as with any surgery). I had already decided if I had complications with the band, I would convert to RNY. I know it is a very personal decision, but realize that RNY is also a very good surgery for obesity. Maybe not your first choice and maybe not something you are comfortable moving to immediately after this experience, but I would recommend getting a second, third, or more opinions from different reputable bariatric surgeons in your area as to what you can do. Hugs and I wish you the best w/all of this. I know it must be heartbreaking.
  24. Congratulations on getting your date! You trust your surgeon and your reasons for moving forward with surgery are all still in place. You can make it the next few weeks. Try and focus on all you'll be able to do after surgery. Gather recipes, clean your closets of things you will never need again. Start your exercise plan... Prepare yourself yes, but try not to only focus on fear of complications. You can do this!! 26 days to a new way of life!
  25. Trying to better understand the risks and complications associated with band/sleeve conversions. I understand from one doctor I spoke to that there's a greater risk with revisions. If you've had any complications, no matter how minor - or no complications, I'm looking to learn: how long did you have your band? did you have a lot of complications with your band previously - e.g. that's what would have led to lots of scaring, etc If you didn't have any excessive band complications, did your sleeve surgeon say you had a lot of scaring from the band? I think I"m just trying to get to whether or not there's a great chance of scaring if you've had your band longer (I've had mine for just over 5 years.
