Feeling nervous, about first fill in London Uk tomorrow, although I did have a 4ml fill on surgery day, I did loose a bit of weight, during swelling and liquids, then it stopped, I do not feel any restriction, i can eat a fair amount, I was told not to count calories yet? I don't weigh anything either, do you think I am going wrong in that department, I am now 6wks into my journey. Hope to loose more in the next 6wks.

Give it time!!! And stay off the scales (once a week only) You will gain and lose depending on the time of day, water retention, etc... Your body is still healing. Slim Sly - You are probably not getting enough calories. 800 is not enough. Once you get your fill, you will have some restricition. Just remember you are responsible for what goes in your mouth and how much you exercise. The band is a tool, it does not do it all. Good Luck, be patient, you will be a loser!!!

When you get to proper restriction, you will have an indisputable sense of fullness that supersedes calorie counting. It took me 4 fills to get to that point. Be patient and best wishes.

4 Weeks Post Op And Very Hungry!
honk replied to vmarlau's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry but hummus has about 30 calories per tablespoon not 10. I did eat a lot of it early on but had to stop. I was using it to eat raw carrots and I was eating wayyyy to much. Some brands do make individual serving containers which would be perfect. My issue was I was eating directly out of a full sized container. -
so thats a little over twenty shots and 1400 calories....basically ten drinks one night and five the next two....you dont see there is a problem here thats bigger than the both of us? on the weight loss issue alone you are looking at a couple days of calories, but then take into consideration you are drinking twenty drinks over each weekens....

I received a recommendation from my husband's co-worker to come here and I'm finding loads of useful information. I am in the early stages of researching lap-band surgery and have a question regarding if some one should have this surgery or not. As many of you have, I have struggled with my weight most of my life. The only way I've ever been able to control my weight is to be hyper, hyper active (exercising 6 days a week for a couple of hours a day) and really constrict my calorie intake(less than 1000 calories a day). While this kept the weight off, it was just too hard to keep up as I was always exhausted. I won't bore you with all my history because I'm sure you're familar with it. Anyhooo...to my question. I'm 5'5" and about 200lbs. I know I don't have as much to loose as many people do but after struggling with it for so many years I'm about to give up and just not care anymore. I really don't want to do it but I'm at my wits end. Most lapband sites I've looked at say I'm not eligible for the surgery and I'm assuming its because of my height/weight ratio. But does that make sense? Do I have to get out-of-control overweight before I do make use of a tool like the lap-band? I know I'm heading there. I'm 38 yrs old and been fighting this since I was 12. I'm so tired of the fight and I want something that will help me with the control issues I have. Are there any people out there who are like me and had a lapband that can provide any words of of advice?

Need more calories-any suggestions

Hello, I'm sure I'm being crazy but just wanted to write it down and see what y'all thought... I had the sleeve on 3/7. Starting weight was 221, after pre-op was 207 on day of surgery. My lowest was three days ago @ 194.4. Then yesterday and today I'm between 198 & 199? What the heck is going on? I'm getting in about 50g Protein and only about 50g of carbs. Calories are around 600 and I'm walking. I started purées/mushies Monday. Is this just my body at the dreaded three week weight loss period where it refuses to drop? I know I need to stay off the scale, but I also like to see what foods effect the scale too, ya know? Any feedback would be awesome!

Help? Food Plan, Do I need a fill? Low Carb?
silvers320 replied to rosstheboss's topic in The Guys’ Room
Congrats on feeling great. I will say that I always worry when people say they PB every day - that should not be an acceptable norm. Look at why its happening - are you eating too fast? The wrong food? Long term PBing is not good. I think 1500 calories a day with 500 calories of burn off doesnt seem like enough for me - but what do I know. I will say I had to do the 3 meals -3 snacks thing or else I would eat so fast I would be PB for an hour. I also notice there are some night where I wonder if I left my band at the office because I feel like I could eat all night long. Thankfully those are rare. I eat some - I drink water. A lot of water on those nights. -

You know it's funny more than half off the food ads on TV actually gross me out. Even presurgery when I would read a menu that said " smothered in sauce/gravy/whatever" it really grossed me out. Especially when fod advertisers want to sound homesy or folksey the wording they use just does'nt make the food sound appealing. One thing to consider is if you see a food ad from a chain restaurant most of them list the nutritional values on their websites. I looked up Chili's Burger Bites with Fries meal and it has 1,000 cal wit 90 g of fat. I never ate them again (and this was preband). So if you see an ad check out the calorie content that will probably heal you of wanting to eat it. -
I'm within three pounds of my goal weight for surgery and not really hungry. But I am so tired I can hardly muster the energy to do the laundry. As a rather fanatical housekeeper, this ain't good. Big snow storm coming and my husband is going out of town on business. Since he's refused to buy a snowblower(he prefers to shovel our 90' driveway by hand?!!) he's suggested I just get an early start tomorrow shoveling. Had to so say no to that one - like I could shovel this monster on under 500 calories??:tongue_smilie:

I was banded on May 20, 2009 with the Realize-C Band. I researched through message boards when decided upon banding, but waited until after to join. I don't have to tell you how I got here, do I? Surely, you know. Low Calorie, Low fat, low carb, Weight Watchers...if it is out there, I have probably done it. The last thing I did was Medifast. I lost 70 pounds and found it all back and then some. (Drat) I was in Vegas with a friend in Febuary. With all the freakin' mirrors there, there was no way to deny what I had done...AGAIN. I got back home, had a good cry and decided it was time to do something permanent. I didn't want to go with the By-pass. I probably read too many on-line blogs where people had bad experiences. But, the band sounded like the right thing for me. I researched my area here in Bradenton, Florida. I decided on Sarasota Memorial's program. On with the program I went: 1. Seminar 2. Eat Healthy for Life Program 3. Psych evaluation 4. Nutritionist consultation 5. Meet with Primary care Doc for letter of necessity 6. Surgeon Consult 7. Barium Swallow (bleah), Chest x-ray 8. Blood work up 9. Pre-admission testing (EKG, more blood, pre-surgery discussion) 10. Dietician consultation Wednesday, my surgery was scheduled for 1 pm. That meant no food or drink after midnight. O-M-G!! Sooo hungry. Had to be a the hospital at 11. Talk about hurry up and wait. I had to get through 3 receptionists before going to the pre-pre-op waiting room. I had to give a urine sample for a pregnancy test! From there a nice man took me to the pre-op room. He gave me plastic bags for my clothes and the lovely hospital gown. So, I got changed and up on the bed. Waited for a few minutes and got my phone so I had something to do. My pre-op nurse came in and took my vitals and got the IV started. Got the heparin shot in the belly. (Lots of fun) Surgery was running an hour late. My anesthesiologist came in and had a follower. A very nice young man who went to the same school as my daughter. And yes, he did know her. Oh, and the anesthesiologist's son goes to the same school. Perrrrrfect. Then time went by for a while. My nurse came back and chatted for a while. This was nice as I was quite bored with the waiting. She left and I got the brilliant belated notion to turn on the TV. It took some manuvering to reach the remote with the IV in, but I prevailed! I found the end of "Sleeping with the Enemy." The anesthesiologist's techs came in and readied me for going to the OR. They were hilarious. They totally wanted to watch the end of the movie, too. We saw Julia shoot her abusive husband and then they gave me that pre-surgery shot. Things get blurry from there. I remember the bed going out of the room. I remember the brightness of the OR. I remember having the gas mask put over my face and nothing. Next thing is telling someone that I hurt and I was nauseous. I have no idea why or who. The person was saying calming things. My eyes flew open and I begged, "Please don't let me throw up!" Suddenly, I was in my hospital room. There may have been more that occurred with me interacting, but I have no memory of it. My throat was raw. My incisions really hurt. As I came the rest of the way out, my nurse came in. She was a doll. Wanted to make me as comfortable as possible. She got my computer and Sudoku book out for me. She brought me a cup of ice water. Small sips!! Finally, I realized that I needed to go to the bathroom. I called my nurse for some help. She was surprised that I hadn't gone already. I was surprised that if they wanted me to go they hadn't mentioned it. So, the put a urine catcher bowl on the toliet so they can measure your out put. Sitting down wasn't so bad as it was the upper abs that hurt, not the lower. With the IV going, There was a pretty full bowl. And not so surprisingly, I had a light period show as well. I was expecting that. I had an appendectomy when I was 15 and the same thing happened. They told me then that it isn't uncommon for that to happen when you have stomach surgery. I had the surgery as an in-patient. So, I was there for the rest of the night. I had to ask for the pain meds when I needed them. I wasn't shy about that! We found quickly that I needed the anti-nausea meds in place when I got my morphine. I was determined to stay awake that night to see who won American Idol, Kris or Adam. So I turned the TV on which was on a cool arm that swung to the bed. I was aware that the program was on and of the performances, but couldn't process more than that. I did hang on to see that Kris won. My kids texted me right away. I was out pretty much after that. That night was rough, because of the discomfort from the surgery and the need to get up to pee frequently. The night nurse came in when I needed her. I could get out of bed on my own. I was still taking small sips. She said I could suck on hard candy. My mouth was still so dry. I found later that there were lemon glycerin swabs in my "kit", but no one thought to offer me one. DH had left me a roll of his peppermints. They weren't great, but better than nothing. I broke them into small pieces and had a bit now and then. That morning, I got up and took a walk. Again, found it odd that no one had insisted that I do so. After that, I graduated from water to beef broth. It REALLY hit the spot. The day repeated itself. Meds, broth, Sleep. It was getting close to 5 and the doctor hadn't made it in yet. The nurses had warned me with out my asking that they did not know when the doc would be in. He came about 5:30. With that I got paperwork and wheelchaired out by 7. It seemed like a long day. My kids were thrilled I was home. DH left to get my prescriptions. He came back with pills. Lortab and Anti-nausea. I thought I was supposed to get elixirs, but what are you going to do at that point? Guh. Before bed, I used my pill crusher to crush the Lortab. I mixed it with a bit of yogurt. Bleah. The anti-nausea were small so I just downed that with water. Lortab wasn't as effective as the Morphine. It knocked me loopy and then out. It was not as good on the pain. I took it for 2 more days and then switched to liquid ibuprofen. Sue me. That night was rough. My neck and chest hurt, my throat still hurt and of course, my incisions hurt. It was hard to move in the bed at all. I wasn't expecting the neck pain. I assume it was gas, but no one had mentioned it going to the neck. Plus! I was in caffeine detox! That was really stupid of me not to give it up before. The headaches on day three were killer!! I was lucky to have Memorial Weekend to convalesce. DH and the kids waited on me. When taking the Lortab, I pretty much slept. I have Tivo in the bedroom and watched some shows in between naps. It is now Monday at 3:15 pm, I am feeling at about 75-80%. The incision where my port is still hurts when I move. I went to the grocery with DH and was TIRED when I got back. I feel over all pretty good. The neck, throat, and chest pain is gone. My port incision isn't hurting too much. And I am about at the end of the novel this first blog is! LOL My doctor has me on full liquids from day 2 to day 45. I have enjoyed pudding, yogurt, protein shakes, cream of tomato soup, jello, frozen, fruit juice bars, pureed cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and cream of wheat. Watching TV is awful. They had a hotdog segment on The View today that had me about ready to eat my pillow. I am one of the lucky -- who is hungry. I am looking forward to reading up on the other blogs and messages. I will try to not always have such diarrhea of the mouth, er, keyboard!!

Total Unfill The Week Before Thanksgiving - YIKES!
JaffreyChick replied to JaffreyChick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, it's only been 2 days since total unfill but I feel wonderful. I even have color in my cheeks again. Not suffering the hunger I thought I would. I did actually enjoy a spinach and beet salad (no dressing) yesterday. I usually struggle with greens -- forget it if they are shredded. I am hoping that if I continue to closely monitor what I eat using the food diary and don't go over in calories, it will be OK. It's all about choices and portions (for the record, I did have one spoonful of hunka chunka -- but it was enough, I just wanted a taste). Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to getting that fill on 12/1 as a safety net - but I will ask to be 2cc below where I was. I don't ever want to have that kind of pain again. The oddest thing, to be able to drink and not sip. I will continue to sip most times, but every once in a while, a good swig of something is heaven. Have a great weekend! -
...soooo tired....

Muscle Milk light. 20g Protein, 160 calories. chocolate flavor is my favorite. They come premixed, ready to drink or they also have powder form. If you're having trouble getting in enough, there is a "New whey liquid protein" 42g protein and 180 calories at GNC and elsewhere I'm sure. I don't like the taste of these, but they are small quanity, maybe like 4oz or so. Lots of protein in such a small volume. -
Will I always be cold?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Iowa_summergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm four months post-op. Like others here, I was freezing up until the last month. And now in the last month I'm not. I am eating more now (between 800 and 1000 calories/day) at the urging of my bariatric P.A. who says it's time to get my calories up. I'm also doing an aquarobics class three times a week, which kicks my ass (you wouldn't think it would, but it does). I don't know what else I could credit the body temp change to. Any insights, fellow WLSers? -
4 oz three times a day
gowalking replied to Lorettanjgal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat 3 oz Protein at each meal...along with 1/2 cup of veggies and 1/4 cup of carbs. We're all living on small portions. If the band is working for you correctly, this is enough food to eat. And no...I don't get enough protein so I supplement with Protein powder..and I've been suffering from hair loss due to this along with insufficient calories. It is also why we are all on Multivitamins and other supplements in order to remain healthy. This does not mean we are weak and unable to function. Many of us are functioning better than ever due to our weight loss and have more energy as well because we are not carrying around so much extra weight. Please find out if there are any seminars in your area so you can speak with someone about your concerns. I understand how you feel. If you are not banded, it's hard to imagine feeling satisfied on a fraction of the amount of food you are likely consuming currently. All I can say again, is that with the band, it is very doable and not that difficult once you have the correct restriction. -

Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?
labwalker replied to Sunshyne068's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
how in the world do you get 100 g of Protein in, in a day's time? I'm not getting enough and am losing hair and nails so my dr upped my protein by eating protein bar not shake but I certainly do not know how you eat that much, please share...I'm only 1 yr out. It isn't hard. Four flounder filets, or 1/2 chicken breasts, along with 80 grams of low fat Greek yogurt at breakfast, will easily get you to between 80 or 90 grams of protein per day, with less than 500 calories. -
Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?
labwalker replied to Sunshyne068's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I started my NUT (six visits!) I was tracking my calories already. Her main concern was my Protein intake. I would have instant sugar free oatmeal with blueberries for Breakfast, and she would always comment that I wasn't having protein intake for that meal. Now I have low fat Greek yogurt and blueberries for my breakfast. I also started eating a lot of fish and chicken for my lunch and dinner meals, and started eliminating unneeded carbs (breads, pastas, rolls... the stuff that adds useless calories.) I was able to keep my calories under 1000, while keeping the protein at 80 to 90 grams. My NUT, and the APRN who does my fills and follow up visits, both want to see a minimum amount of protein. My NUT showed me plastic samples of food, and told me to be aware of portion sizes (what a cup of something looks like.) But, I was never told to limit my portions, and my APRN told me not to worry if I was eating more than a cup of food at a meal. I assume if I have future fills that lead to intake restriction, I may have to reduce portions. The NUT said always to eat the protein portions first, and then fill on the veggies or other foods afterwards. -

Protein Vs. Calories Vs. Fat Vs. Carbs
Jachut replied to Missy05.29.12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not by nature a tracker or counter but I have been lately because I have to keep records for a dietician I have to see for bowel problems. What I've noticed, years into maintenance, I tend to eat about 1400 calories a day across three meals and a snack, plus milk for coffee. My diet pretty much ALWAYS falls somewhere around 25-30% fat, 25-30% Protein and 40-50% carbs. For me, I run a lot so I burn those carbs, but I have no trouble maintaining my weight. I have a BMI of 21 and feel great. The program I've been using doesnt give you grams of each of those macronutrients just percerntages. I try to stay away from fried foods, takeaway foods, really processed foods like Lean Cuisines and canned Soups (I make all my own soups, I absolutely LIVE on thick, homemade soups) and sugar. Sugar and I do not have a good relationship, I tend to binge on it, so even though I really believe in anything in moderation, when i am going to eat sugar, I know I'm in for a pig out. Sometimes, I simply plan for it, enjoy it and move on. -
This recipe originated at SavingDinner.com. However, I had to alter some portions of it to make it reasonable for bandsters. I personally encourage the use of the Body Clutter Menus from SavingDinner.com. With minor alterations, most can be used by bandsters. Bandster Slow Poke Jambalaya Serves 6 (If they eat tiny portions. For hungry adults, double this recipe) 1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion 1-1/2 cups chopped fresh tomato 1 cup chopped celery (or if your band won't take celery, substitute a teaspoon of celery salt) 1 clove garlic, minced 1 T. dried parsley or 2 T. fresh parsley, chopped fine 1 tsp. Dried thyme 1 tsp. Oregano 1/8 tsp. Cayenne pepper (Note: We like it hotter, so we added 1 tsp. Toni Chachere's creole seasoning) ½ tsp. Salt (omit if you used the celery salt) 4 oz. Smoked sausage, cut into 1-inch pieces 8 oz. Boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces (we used 4 pieces of skinned chicken thigh because we didn't have chicken breasts and thighs are cheaper) 2 cups low sodium beef broth (or homemade, as we did) ½ lb. Cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined. (DH recommends getting the kind with tails off, but that's up to you. The tails do add flavor, believe it or not, so they're worth the extra trouble) Separate: 1 cup cooked brown rice In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients except the shrimp and rice. Give it a stir, cover, and cook on low at least 6 hours. Add shrimp and cook for another 20-30 minutes. For non-bandsters, a bit of rice in the bowl, then pour their serving over the top. Bandsters don't get rice. These nutritional values are for a serving with rice: 232 calories 7 g. fat 25g Protein 16g carbohydrates 3g dietary fiber 93 mg cholesterol 474mg sodium

I'm almost 4 weeks post op and feeling great. I exercise regularly (3.5 miles 5-6 days a week & weights 3 days a week) which really keeps my energy up. My starting weight Pre-op was 250.5. After 1 week Pre-op diet, I was 235. One week post op, 225. Two week post op, 228 (wk I started adding mushies) Three week post op, 230. Ugh! Had first fill of 3 CCs at 3 weeks. I was required to do 3 days of liquids, now 3 days of soft foods, and then "normal." I was so discouraged by my weight gain before, I am working hard to avoid it this time. I made some poor choices when I could finally eat, not this time. Today, I am 3.5 weeks post op, weight 222.5. I'm very excited!!! Doing the liquids for days really jumped started everything. I lost 8 pounds in 4 days! Craziness!!! To help continue this weight loss trend (although I know it will slow back down) I have started a recording everything in a food journal. I need people's help! How many grams of fat do you eat a day? Calories? Carbs? My doctor recommends 60-70 grams of Protein, not sure about the others. Thanks for your help! -
Getting hungry may mean you need a fill or you may need to increase your protein to sustain you longer. How much protein are you eating with each meal. If your meals are not 20 plus grms or more you are likely to be hungry sooner. My meals are usually around 25 grms and I supplement with protein between meals twice a day. I know, we are only suppose to eat 3 meals a day, not realistic to me, it is rare that anyone can sustain on 3 meals a day. If they can than they are better than me. I eat about every 3-4 hours when awake and consume about 1500 calories aday now, when losing I consumed 1000-1200 calories a day. I take in 90 plus grms of protein.
