    Fruit

I have only just had enough room in my tummy for fruit. I struggle with skins so peel everything. So, grapes are off my menu, no time to peel a grape. I eat 4 or 5 small meals a day and to up my calories and give me more energy, I drink a homemade milkshake every day. I still like banana and peanut butter in my milk. Breakfast is a protein yogurt with raspberries, or porridge and banana. My fav small snack is a sliced peeled apple with an ounce of cheese. I have always eaten loads of healthy fruit. I tend to buy what they label kids fruit, small apples or small snack packs of cut fruits. A normal pack means lots get wasted. No food is off my menu if I can stomach it. Will I ever eat rice, noodles or pasta again? I don't know this. I don't want to be on a diet anymore. I just want to keep my restriction to limit me.

    Feeling Stuck

Oh, it's such a battle isn't it?! I also tolerate carbs very well and it's the thorn in my side too. I have made an agreement with myself that I can have a carby snack every day - usually in the evening when the children have gone to bed. I'll have a salted caramel nut bar or a small bowl of baked crisps (chips). You've lost over 10lbs a month on average... that's pretty good going. Maybe you're already at the weight you're meant to be? Are you still tracking protein and calories?

    Feeling Stuck

You know what’s happening. You said it yourself - eating more junk food & old habits sneaking back. It’s the battle we all face & always will to some extent. The surgery only changes our body not our brain sadly. All because you can tolerate those foods doesn’t mean you should eat them. But you have to make the decision as to whether you’ll eat them, how often you’ll eat them & how much of them you’ll eat. Finding a balance of our eating & weight & being able to live the life we want is something we have to discover for ourselves. It’s why many accept being a little heavier than they originally wanted as it’s less restrictive, more sustainable & allows them more flexibility to enjoy their life with family & friends. And that’s okay. Unfortunately, yes, exercising will increase your appetite as your body seeks to replace the calories you’ve burnt being active. If you’re more active you can eat more calories but less than you burn if you want to keep losing. Also exercising only contributes to around 10% of the weight you want to lose. So if you want to lose 20lbs, exercise will contribute to the loss of about 2 of those pounds. Of course, lots of other benefits to being active. I think you know what you need to do if you want to lose more weight. Start by making one change today. Then in a week or so make another. It’s easier to manage & accept going one step at a time. All the best.
  4. Hello, sorry to hear your struggle. I know of a few people dealing with this. Do you track your foods? Maybe you are not eating as many calories as you think? If not, try tracking for a while and keep adding calories until you stop loosing? Just a suggestion. Good luck.
  5. The foods that you mention nuts , butters and avocados, but also dried and fresh fruits, whole grain breads, potatoes (sweet and white), oatmeal, full fat dairy, I have ate from day one. Except pasta , high carb food. Are you saying to eat pasta , high carb foods? Of course I have since trying to put weight on. Healthy dense calorie food does not help with weight gain. But that’s for me. Everyone is different. I do need to mention my stomach feels more restricted. I was up to two cups of food 1 year out. Now being 2 plus years I’m down to 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup. Any ideas anyone.
  6. Ghee, butter, avocados, healthy fats, full fat cheeses and dairy are your friends. Doesn't take much full fat cheese to add up those calories quickly. Don't forget nuts. Almonds 1/4c are a whopping 170 calories. Peanut butter smoothies can be super fattening but healthy and delicious.
  7. Are you working with a dietitian? When you're actually underweight and struggling to gain weight, all the things you learned about losing weight go out the window. For example, if you're avoiding carbs, you need to stop. If you're watching your fat intake, that too needs to stop. As @ShoppGirl said, this does not mean you should eat junk, there are plenty of healthy carbs and fats you can add to your diet. Do a google search for things like "healthy calorie dense foods". You'll see nut butters and avocados, but also dried and fresh fruits, whole grain breads, potatoes (sweet and white), oatmeal, full fat dairy, pasta, etc...
  8. You shouldn’t have to eat “junk food” to add calories. Try adding in things like nut butter, healthy oils, and avocado to increase calories. I’m sure your nutritionist will have a few more ideas. Those are just the few I know of that may get you started.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey July peeps. I’m past my 3 months since surgery. I too had a 3 week stall and I’m losing slow but steady now. I feel really good. I lost 20 lbs prior to surgery and another 43 since. I’m feeling good. I’ve gone from size 20W to 14W. My energy level is low; I think cuz I’m on 600-800 calories a day. I’m walking most days and still doing light weights but I’m not building stamina. I have an appointment with a nutritionist tomorrow and I’ll get my labs done on Thursday. I’ve found that I bruise way too easily right now too. I’m talking severe bruised on my forearm just cuz I put on long gloves as part of a costume. They’re going to be checking into that too. Other than that I’m very happy with the slow but steady progress. I hated the stall. I’m the one in the ivory dress with the pink ribbon. Those are the gloves that killed me.

    Calorie shock

it’s amazing the stuff that we used to eat is a lot more calorie dense then after changing dietary habits; especially portion size for me so far!

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey July peeps. How is everyone doing? I hope all is well. I haven't been on in a while, but I was taking a break from work and decided to check in. I continue to make decent progress. It's been a little more than 3 months since surgery. I think I lost 25 in the first month, 15 in the second month and 10 in the third. That's 50 lbs post op on top of the 28 pre-op. I seem to be losing 2 lbs per week at this point, and I'm real happy with that. I don't remember when I looked at the menu I got from the dietician. But I think I am doing most everything on it, avoiding carbs, doughy bread, sugars, etc. I take my vitamins. I'm tracking my food in the MFP app and trying to get my protein. Some food/drinks I've found working well for me: Old Wisconsin Turkey Sausage sticks (Walmart and Amazon) Low-fat/Light String Cheese Quest Protein chips (Loaded Taco is my fave but others are good) Body Tech Whey Isolate Protein Powder (Rich Chocolate) Fairlife Protein Shakes (Chocolate and Vanilla) - Delicious! Ole Xtreme Spinach and Herbs tortilla/wraps Occasionally, when I'm out of the house, I have no choice but to eat what is available. If I can't get something low calorie/low carb, I try to modify the item, like removing the bun, not eating the pizza crust, etc. I haven't had heartburn in over a month, but I am still on a prescription (Esomeprazole?) for now. Probably my biggest issue is knowing when to stop eating. At times, I just forget how small my stomach is and keep spooning food in until I fill it to the top. Oh, that's so uncomfortable. LOL.

    Calorie shock

Isn't it crazy the way we evaluate things like that? Pre surgery, 340 calories would have seemed really low to me, even when dieting. Now, I probably couldn't eat that much if I tried. I suppose there's nothing that says you have to eat a full serving if it doesn't fit your goals. The protein content to calorie ratio seems decent, so one regular serving might actually be two for me right now.

    Calorie shock

I am eating about 1000 calories a day so I try to stay under 300 cals per meal. So like I said, not horrible but a little more than I usually eat. It was more of a shock that all the little ingredients added up so quick. The actual beef and broccoli was only 205 cals of it.

    Calorie shock

less beef and more broccoli will definitely turn that around - although as we know, protein is really important, too. Although I suppose you could make it with chicken if you wanted... 340 calories per serving and 28 grams of protein is actually decent - although I'm in maintenance, which makes a difference...

    Calorie shock

There was a recipe I used to make pre-op that I loved. Homemade beef and broccoli. I have been wanting it, so I made a crock pot of it yesterday to have for lunches this week. Well, this is the first time I entered the ingredients and added up calories and WHOA! I was a bit shocked. There really isn't much to it other than BEEF (top round) and BROCCOLI! I mean, in all actuality the calories aren't bad, just more than I eat now for a meal. The random little things added up quick! 340 calories and 28 g protein per serving. I was just a bit shocked that they added up to that! Next time I will try to tweak the recipe to get it a little lighter and see how it tastes. Sticker shock, if you will! I am eating it anyway because like I said, not horrible but not my typical meal. But I am not just going to waste it all so I will enjoy it this week and go from there!

    Pre op panic!

you are probably fine with 300 calories over.

    Pre op panic!

Mine was about 600 calories a day so I feel your pain. We all do, diets differ but they are all hard. Mine was 4 shakes a day and then we were given a list of foods and the serving sizes and we were allowed 6 servings a day. It was SF pudding, plain oatmeal, some fresh veggies etc. No proteins or carbs. All of the protein came from the shakes. you can do it!
  18. Has anyone ever had the op cancelled due to cheating on pre op? I’ve been pretty good staying within the 1200 calories (mostly)- Optifast shakes, veges, 2 litres water a day- and the odd bit of protein -but I have blown out a few times- is this common?? I’ve probably lost about 5-6 kg in 3.5 weeks.. I’m 165cm x 94kg. BMI if 34.5 now I’m starting to worry- I have my op booked for Thursday this week.

    Carbs yes or no

I'm a guy, 13 months post bypass, and honestly I only count calories, and protein. I try to keep it under 1500 cals, and always try to hit the 90g of protein the dietician wants me at. Carbs work themselves out, because I may want that muffin, but if it's 300 calories of pure carbs, that's a fifth of my daily count, and it does nothing for actually feeling full, so I may eat half, or less, and add a protein.🤷🏾‍♂️

    Head hunger.

Sounds yummy. If you can make it with spray pam instead of oil or butter it would be even better for you. Maybe a little cinnamon and sweetener. i like to make s’mores in banana boats. I use sugar free choc chips and almonds or pecans instead of graham crackers so the only bad thing really is the marshmallows. It’s still higher calories and not necessarily for weight loss phase but for maintenance for me it’s a healthy-ish alternative to s’mores Have you considered a bariatric therapist to try to get to the root of the head hunger. A lot of people swear that this has helped them tremendously.

    Carbs yes or no

yeah, in MY experience, going keto/low-carb is very effective for losing weight rapidly in a relatively short amount of time. BUT...maintaining this lifestyle long term is challenging for most (not all, but MOST) The problem with us as a community has always been KEEPING the weight OFF (i mean how many times in the past have we lost a bunch of weight only to gain it back, and sometimes plus more) So when most (not all!) get to the keto/low-carb burnout phase, or just slowly let things slide, there needs to be another plan in place to maintain one's current weight and usually thats just finding your own balance of calories and activity level...and make that your lifestyle. P.S. not to say that Keto/low-carb is not an unattainable lifestyle choice. i have several friends who have done this for many years (and one who's been at it for over 20 years!) ...interestingly enough none of whom have ever been obese...not sure if there is a correlation there...

    Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?

In the weeks before surgery you’re on the restrictive pre surgery diet so no alcohol for about two weeks +/- prior to your surgery. After surgery you’ll be advised to avoid alcohol too for a period of time. Alcohol is high in empty calories, dehydrates you & will slow your metabolism & weight loss. Plus there is the concern that if you have an addiction to food you will become addicted to alcohol as you can’t satisfy your food cravings.

    Regained it all

Thank you. This is very helpful. I don't eat a ton of "bad" food, but I eat one of those small kids chip snap bags several days/week. I pick at food as I prepare dinner. I have a glass (or 2) of wine with dinner, and then night eating puts me over the top. Not bad food, but too much food. I have to get this situation under control. I have to increase the vegetables and go back to protein shakes to cut back on calories. I already go to the gym twice per week and get very respectable workouts in. My goal has never been to be skinny. I'm ecstatic at size 8 and very satisfied at a size 10. I'm at least a 14 at this point and I'm beside myself!

    Regained it all

I have seen people on here who have gained back 30 or 40 pounds and they have been able to lose it. Your restriction should still be there. You most likely have just changed WHAT you are eating throughout all of those stressors. Change it back to your post surgery plan and you should lose. It will be a little more difficult because you probably have your appetite back but you can do it. I am saying all this for myself too as i have gained some back and I’m struggling to lose. I have an appointment set with an endocrinologist because I thought something may be wrong with my hormones because I didn’t think I was eating that bad but my husband told me last night he thinks maybe I have been splurging more than I realize (don’t quit tracking folks). I’m still going to make sure but I’m thinking that I’m right there with you. I have heard of people going all the way back to their liquid diet but idk if that extreme is necessary. I was thinking of going back to my liver shrink diet. It sort of detoxed me from all the junk and mine wasn’t too bad. Actually the more I think of it it kinda looks the same as the post surgery regular diet. It was mostly lean meat and veggies (just a little more veggies) with a couple shakes as best as I can recall. I guess what it really amounts to is just getting back on plan 100% for dinner with a couple shakes a day to cut calories a bit further. I am expecting the loss to be slower this time cause I can eat more now and I have my appetite so I can’t cut calories AS much but I’m hoping it will still come off eventually. I will be rooting for you too. We can do this.

    Easiest Change?

Same thing with the lack of sugar cravings. If I start getting a craving for chocolate I just have part of a Fairlife chocolate shake. The other part that's been easy for me is the lightened mental load of this weight-loss process. I used to agonize over calories and carbs eaten. I would track everything and make a point to workout several times per week. I would beat myself up over slip-ups and cheats. I was always thinking about my next meal. Now I'm less stressed and making better choices in general. The weight is steadily coming off and for the first time I don't have to fight my metabolism tooth and nail.
