    Keto

There is a thing called "bariatric keto" which is basically Atkins in that it is higher protein than current keto fads call for, but Atkins is "old school" while keto is "in" and what people want to do if they are keeping up with current fads - so they label it appropriately. But, I wouldn't compare a bariatric diet (which is basically maintenance level protein and then whatever else to fill in the minimal caloric requirement one has,) to keto, or Atkins, though one can use them if so inclined, but neither is all that sustainable long term, and that is what you should be striving for. Think in terms of what your diet should be in five or ten years - if that's keto or Atkins for you, great, but there's no compelling reason that it should be either. It can be vegetarian or vegan if that floats your boat, and that will work just as well.

    Stevia

I would think that would be fine. Is it on your list from your DR? I do know I have been checking into the KETO diet and it is one of the approved sweeteners.

    Carbs yes or no

doing low carb of 50 total carbs now for pre op diet and it’s hard!! (If i could minus fiber it wouldn’t be so bad) and it has caused some intermittent issues due to reduced fiber intake (consuming some supplements now that i don’t count towards my 50 total, but would much rather use dietary fiber in foods) i went through the “keto flu” back in August (foggy head, achy feeling , low energy) in about three days. I also was ravenously hungry early on. my brother suggested that I increase my fat intake and that did the trick. I made cream cheese and peanut butter “fat bombs” with sugar free chocolate chips and monkfruit… scooped them with a 3/4 ounce scoop and ate two of them a day as snacks and it made the hunger disappear! i do not think i could do this low long term, personally, but will be integrating the low carb approach into my post op dietary lifestyle. Being very selective with any sugars, flours and starches is fine.. but it’s hard for me without being able to have much beans/legumes/peas/etc. I would kill for a big bowl of refried beans for dinner, but the total carbs are just too high pre op unless I am super cautious all day.

    I'm struggling with muscle loss.

Everyone has really good suggestions. sleep more, add extra Protein, etc. if you're that active, I'd suggest bumping up your carbs too. You can still stay in keto. Your muscles do require carbohydrates for strength. If you want to add supplements, glutamine and creatine will also help with preventing muscle loss. However, creatine does cause Water retention so you may notice you're not "losing" as much but it's just water. Glutamine is a supplement that's used at our hospital to prevent muscle wasting in patients with hypermetabolic syndrome. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  7. 5 years ago today was my VSG. Pre-op, I purposed myself to be THE perfect patent, to do everything as I was told to, to follow ALL the directions and do great. and, I did. I lost about 85 lbs of weight and loved life. However, I had a very gentle carb creep and hardly noticed it. Then, one night at work I thought it might be ok to have some watered down diet soda, and that was the beginning of a pretty big spiral downward. I regained in the neighborhood of 35 lbs. It took a pretty major health scare to get me back on track about 20 months ago. I got back on track, went strict Keto, and have lost my regain. I've still got about 25 lbs to go before I'm ready for my plastics, but what a 5 year journey it has been. I left my career path, took a completely new position in my field, went to night shift, went back to grad school, graduated, changed jobs again, went back for post-grad studies, lost a parent, and have come full circle with my career. What a journey. I am forever grateful that I had my surgery. People often ask me "if you lost weight on Keto, why didn't you just do that in the first place"? But they have no idea of my health pre-op, or the battles I faced without my surgery. I would do it again in a blink. I still consider myself a WLS patient, and will ALWAYS identify as a WLS patient. I talk to others about it, and I wanted to share my journey with you.

    Pre-Op Diet

I met with the nutritionist at my surgeon's office and she told me for the first month of my insurance-mandated three month pre-op diet to limit carbs to just the morning and cut out carbonated drinks. Since I'd tried Aktins/Keto before I figured I'd just go with that. I met with her again five weeks later, having lost 13lb and based on my success she told me not to change a thing for month two. As for my routine: For work days I found the Kirkland (Costco) brand protein bars and have one for breakfast, then a hard boiled egg and/or string cheese for a morning snack. Lunch is spinach salad with carb free dressing, a chunk of some kind of lean meat (often leftover from the previous night's dinner), and some raw broccoli. Afternoon snack is a low carb yogurt and/or another string cheese. If I want a snack when I get home I'll have a chunk of cheddar or some pork rinds. I also bought some Carb-Quik baking mix on Amazon, it's like Bisquick but 95% fiber so very low net carbs and I'll have one or two biscuits made from that a day with butter to satisfy my bread craving. Dinner is more spinach salad, another chunk of meat/fish or a low-carb recipe like sausage and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos and a vegetable. Weekends are similar but I'll have eggs and a biscuit for breakfast instead of the protein bar and I also bought the 5lb drum of Cookies and Cream protein shake mix from Costco which I prefer to make with unsweetened almond milk instead of water. However, twice since I began I felt I ate too much the previous day so I did a full day of nothing but the protein drinks all day and a smaller dinner. Very important of course is getting the 64oz of water a day. I found boxes of 8 packets of Hawaiian Punch fruit punch and Wyler's lemonade for $1 each at a local discount store and stocked up big time to ensure I don't get tired of plain water. I'm also fortunate that my surgeon said I do not need to do a pre-op liquid diet as many surgeons recommend.
  9. I only told two people (in case of emergency) Everyone else appeared too judgemental to me so I decided not telling them was best Other than that when people ask I tell them I eat a lot less and low carb/keto
  10. You have to try Peatos, they are game changers. They taste like junk food without any strange health-food texture or aftertaste, but they are healthy. They are made from peas and lentils and taste like hot Cheetos, funyons, etc. I have done keto a lot in my life and try all of the low carb breads, pastas and snacks. These are the best snack for me. Variety 15-pack is 20.00 on Amazon and they have 4g protein and only about 6-11 net carbs a bag (depending on flavor) Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app

    DRY MOUTH SOS

This is probably due to ketosis. You're not taking in carbs, and so you're in keto mode -- I had HORRIBLE dry mouth during keto, and also the weirdest smell (my body, my spit, my mouth...everything smelled weirdly sweet). Once my calorie intake went up a bit, it chilled out again.

    MYO Protein Shake

Thanks! I'm going to try them ALL. [emoji6] I have no idea what "keto" means, so I'm probably not it. 🤣
  13. Can you try to satisfy your cravings with healthier options? I've been having cauliflower mash and cauliflower risotto, just from the frozen food section, and it tastes sooo good. Or have the pasta sauce you want, but over zucchini noodles? There are a ton of recipes online for oven fried this and that. When I was doing keto (low carb) a few years ago, we used crushed pork rinds as breading for chicken fingers and it was delicious. Then bake in the oven or air fry. I know how hard it is to kick cravings though! It sucks! Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. Today was this: Breakfast: Egg with cheese and a slice of bacon Snack: light babybel cheese Lunch: zucchini noodles (very little) with 2 oz chicken baked with a roasted red pepper and basil Snack: Birthday cake muscle butter with 1/4th if an apple Dinner: teeny tiny burger with cheese, no bun Babybel cheese and pepperoni have been favorite Snacks, I've also been eating turkey meatballs and shepherds pie made with ground turkey and cauliflower mash. Pinterest has been my best friend. I have so many low carb/keto recipes saved. I feel like I'm still able to eat amazing food just much much less of it.
  15. Even with a Duodenal Switch, it still comes down to calories in vs. calories out. DS patients can also out-eat their procedures over time. The DS very well may be a great option, along with dietary education and management. I agree that you need to get those tests Fluffy mentioned. Hormonal imbalances can make metabolisms pitifully slow. While you are checking into your options, start tracking. Weigh every morsel of calorie containing food and drink that you consume. See where you are at. It is possible to overeat on keto diets as well, so for some people, they STILL have to count.

    People Don't Get It

Yes, indeed surgery is the key factor. One of the things that I have recognized over the years of being in this game is how little dietary style influences ones weight loss after surgery. Back in the good ol' days 20-30 years ago WLS patients were often advised to just "eat like you always have, just less...." and that generally worked quite well - for the year or so, give or take, that they were losing. Maintaining that loss was not so successful with that approach, obviously, as they never changed what got them into trouble in the first place, and they often regained just as they did when doing diets in the past, though usually somewhat more slowly owing to the restriction that they had. Back when low fat diets were "in", people did just as well with their WLS as they do today with low carb and keto diets being the big thing. The important thing is developing good long term eating habits that one can maintain forever, and none of the popular fad diets do that for most people, and they tend to regain when they get tired of the diet.
  17. This is pretty interesting stuff! Jason Fung is a kidney specialist and proponent of the *gasp* low carb/keto dietary program. But wait! Aren't all of us (especially those with CKD) gonna die from the "gobs of protein we're shoving down our pie holes???!!!!!! *another gasp*. And here's a quick article that discusses why CICO is a myth. Makes a lot of sense... https://idmprogram.com/the-failure-of-the-calorie-theory-of-obesity/
  18. I had to have my lapband removed in 2013 due to an abscess from having my band put back in place. Since then I gained all my weight back and an extra 45. Tried losing with weight watchers, then keto and then with regular portion control. I lost weight on each, but never got passed 40 pounds. So, I'm calling to set up an appointment with my surgeon to hopefully get the rny going. Super nervous and good luck!

    Carbs yes or no

My nutritional plan has "moderate" carbs, but I am nevertheless in deep maroon keto at three weeks post-op. I was curious, so I bought some keto sticks (cheap ones, $8 at Walmart). I think the low calories we consume, even if they include carbs, just aren't enough to cover what we burn daily. So the body starts using fat for fuel. If I can help this process along by eating less carbs, that's what I plan to do!
  20. Hello Everyone, I had my surgery 11 years ago and lost 100 pounds. I've gained about 40 pounds and was able to lose 10 last month doing Paleo/Keto diet. The weight lost just stop so now I'm deciding to go back to basic and just do " The pouch reset" has anyone done that. Did it work??? Thanks in advance.

    Tespo

I purchased the Tespo 5 weeks pre surgery and started using the energy and women’s multi-vitamin. My husband is not sleeved, and he he loves his men’s daily ad the energy. Total output is about 1 oz and the flavors are not bad. He mixes it with his Keto drink and can’t even tell it’s in there.

    Vets- your diet opinions please

I’ve been following a Bariatric keto plan that I got from Facebook group called Bariatric keto for women. It is low carb, moderate fat and high protein. I feel fantastic getting back to the basic of our weight loss journey. I am 5 years out with no significant weight gain however I had been eating to much sugary food and was feeling very sluggish, I know weight gain would be next.
  23. Hi Cass. I think of this thread as my weekly therapy lol 😂 Good to jot down what I've been doing and feeling in the last week. thanks for the keto idea. I've read a lot of people seem to be following this kind of eating plan on here. High protein and fat, low or no carb. Reminds me of Atkins. I'm mostly happy to follow something like this but I'm a carb kinda guy as well. Probably what sent me down this journey in the first place. Don't think pasta will do you any harm. Done most of its swelling in the pan. Glad you're doing well. Sounds like a fun time. Cheesecake! I need to get on some of that!! 😂
