Enjoying food is gone?
Sammi_Katt replied to imaginegirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I'm just starting to eat real solid foods again, and honestly, my taste buds have changed a little bit, but I really enjoy food still. Taking the time to eat slowly kinda lets me savor it? I've been experimenting with bariatric and keto recipes and I'm finding some really nice and tasty things that are well within the dietitian's guidelines. You may have a few things that don't taste as good as they used to (I'm kind of sad that fish for me doesn't taste really good), but things you didn't like before might taste good now, too (I like cooked spinach all of a sudden). It's a lot of experimenting and guessing and seeing what your new body reacts well with. -
I had my sleeve surgery in 2010..did really well and lost 100 pounds in 11 months. however, i got pregnant at the 11th month so had to switch to a more normal diet. fast forward i have 2 kids now and i have maintained my weight loss but want to start again to lose another 50 - 70 pounds..so how do i go about resetting things?? I know a lot of people are doing the KETO diet but im not really sure if that is something that would work for me with this surgery... When i had it done the diet was protein first.... then green veggies if there was room.. is that still what Drs recommend? Any advice would help tons. Thank you in advance :-)

I'm 17 months post-op. I lost over 100% of my excess weight, got to my goal at 1 year and 4 days post-op, and have been maintaining almost 10 pounds below goal for over 5 months now. If you eat and drink how you are supposed to eat and drink, you won't regain. I know that a sedentary person at my size (6'0" 173 pounds) needs around 2100 calories per day to maintain his weight; therefore, I keep my calories around 2000 each day. I follow a keto way of eating, so I keep my carbs below 25g per day and my protein around 150g per day. I don't consume sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. I had to make food fuel in my life and I changed my relationship with food to embrace an eat to live philosophy. I had to do that after having a destructive relationship with food for 40 years. I understand that neither the keto thing nor the eat to live philosophy is for everyone, but the fact remains that if you eat within the proper parameters, you shouldn't regain weight. Frankly having an active, healthy social life beats the hell out of any food and drink any day. I am living my 20s in my 40s and having the time of my life!!

Have you tried keep low carb/low calorie sweets on you? I try to keep something on me, so if I get tempted I have a better option. Lily's chocolate, protein bar, protein brownie, keto cookie, something. Long term I think it is better to have replacements than just try to flat out deprive yourself. At least it is working for me

Be careful what you ask for...
FluffyChix replied to Libby63's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That depends. You don't drive yourself as cray, BUT the other way gives you more time to really deep dive and do the head work. Any prep work you do up front is time very well spent in my opinion. In the 6-9 month lead-in for me, I broke up with high glycemic carbs, most processed foods, caffeine in any form, all white stuff--especially sugar and white breads, pasta, potatoes and rice. And I was also keto adapted. That made the 2 week liquid diet and post op diet infinitately easier!!! I would have hated to go through all of those things PLUS recover from a major surgery. -
Considering stage Questions
Bhageerah replied to Medowsweet's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I know that there are others on here that will disagree with this statement, but I realize that this is a lifelong journey. It is not a sprint to the finish line and that I will have to change my relationship with food for the rest of my life. That being said surgery helped put ME in control of the food and not the other way around. I still eat crackers from time to time, I also eat sugar from time to time. But it isn't an everyday thing and not in the amounts that I used to consume. I do know that sugar is one of my downfalls so I do watch how much I consume. I also changed my part time job. In essence I was working 240 hrs a month at my main job, and then another 90-120 hours a month at my part time job. That amount of working led to me eating fast food 3-4 meals a day and packing on the pounds like crazy. I still work about 300-320 hours a month but I am prepared and have protein shakes in my book bag, in the refrigerator at both jobs as well as protein bars. Just like with keto meal prep is the key! If you plan ahead and keep something high protein around you then you have passed half the test. If you are doing Keto now then you are well on your way!! -
Further to what @catwoman7 said, since diets and the makeup of each individual vary so much, its difficult to advise someone on an internet board with just one strategy. Soooo....if you want to calculate your macros, you can use one of the calculators i've included below (NOTE: this is not the be all and end all medical advice to live by, just a guideline offered by just TWO sites...there are infinite sources out there....) This first calculator takes your inputted data and it will calculate the suggested macro breakdown for various types of diets as well as a "make your own" one you can customize: https://www.calculator.net/macro-calculator.html *** (see note below) The link above doesn't have a preset for ULTRA-LOW carb/Keto diets (you'll have to use the customize option), but this second one does (this is the one I used throughout my weight loss phase): https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/ Good Luck! Edited to add: I was playing around with the first calculator with my own data and it looks like it will give you a warning to consult your doctor if you put in data that would put your calories too low (I put in 115 lbs and selected "extreme weight loss"). Only when I set weight loss to "mild" did it give me an answer. Looks like it won't give an answer if the calculated calories is less than 1500. If you want to go lower than 1500 (which alot of people do), I suggest using the second calc and playing around with the carb value.

Babbs replied to Donny's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I, too, am a big fan of the Keto lifestyle and intermittent fasting. I took off almost 6 pounds of regain doing the Keto/Intermittent fasting for a couple of months. So @@Donny, I'm curious. How's your sleeve restriction at 4 years out? I'm 2+ years out and curious. -
Hey BabyNewYear, I'm also almost 4 months and doing great. What a fantastic experience I've been having all the way! Some things haven't changed: I still don't feel when I need to stop eating, so I pretty much overeat many times because my brain doesn't want to stop, so at least once a week I feel extremely sick because of course our stomachs can't handle the amount of food. As I mentioned you before I stopped losing weight after week 5, so I have decided to start a lchf/keto/banting lifestyle which is a lifestyle based on very low carbs, moderate Protein and high in fat; why this approach? I'm barely hungry when I eat fat, it allows me to fulfil my protein requirements and sugars (carbs) is what gave me the metabolic syndrome, weight gain and led me to surgery. I'm really happy with this approach and I really honestly hope that I can follow this the rest of my life. Many ask about my sugar and cholesterol levels with this diet and all of them are back to normal. I'm down 17 kg (37lbs 8oz or 2 stones 9.5lbs ) from 76 kg (167lbs 9oz or 11 stones 13.55lbs) to 59kg (130lbs 1oz or 9 stones 4 lbs) and I'm only 4 kg (8lbs 13 oz or 8.8 lbs) from my goal weight. Lately I've been losing between 0.5kg or less per week (around one pound or less). None of my clothes, underwear nor shoes fit. I've lost my ass, it's totally flat so sitting is painful because I'm sitting on my hips and training has it's ups and downs because I lost more weight from my right side of my body so my sneakers are loser on one side and I hurt my right knee quit often. I'm also trying to become stronger with weight lifting so that I can continue to lose fat. My stomach is still big compared to the rest of my body, but I can start seeing my neck, hands and hip bones. Lose skin on my ass, boobs and upper arms. hair loss, it's bad... but I've seen worst cases on instagram, so I still feel lucky about this, but there is hair absolutely EVERYWHERE! I'm taking Biotin for this. What an amazing journey!!! Looking forward to the next update! Cheers!

127lbs before surgery date!!!!
gr8ful1 replied to Sparkle36703's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're having a hard time doing it on your own, I would recommend enrolling in a medical weight loss program at a local hospital. This is different than just seeing a dietitian or nutritionist once a month. I'm talking about a much more comprehensive program that requires visits at least weekly. I have done this many times. The weight keeps coming back, and that's why I'm here seeking surgery now. But a very low calorie keto diet is relatively easy to sustain when they give you (well you pay for them, of course) the products to consume, track your progress and health along the way, and basically hold your hand all the way through the program. Bottom line: You can do this! -

Hello everyone, I am located in the Netherlands and will be having my Gastric Sleeve surgery on October 17th in Turkey at Grand Medical. I'm choosing to go to Turkey because I am below the 40 BMI required for insurance coverage in the Netherlands. Due to this reason, I must pay out of pocket and the medical tourism world is quite high quality in Turkey- same procedures- a quarter of the cost. My costs are below 3000 euros including my 5 days stay at the hospital and my transport to and from the airport- flights are not included- but are fairly affordable if flying from Europe. Their track record is phenomenal for the sleeve and their patient experience passes with flying colors. I'm choosing to have this surgery as a lower BMI patient due to my family history of obesity over 40 and the fact that I have tried every diet, lifestyle change, even personal training and nothing has worked!!! I have gained muscle and stalled after 5 kg.. The one time i lost weight on keto, I gained it right back within 1.5 years. I'm looking forward to this new life and the new options it will afford me, not to mention having my confidence back. If anyone is located in Europe- (western/Northern and UK) is a huge plus and has had the surgery or is having it soon, tell me you experiences and lets keep in touch! I'd love to be able to share information about what shakes youre using, vitamins, foods youve found etc as many of the items mentioned by our U.S based members arent available to us. I'm also interested in hearing if anyone else has had their surgery in Turkey as I know its quite a popular destination for weight loss surgeries and plastic surgeries.

Bariatric Cook Book?
BigSue replied to simplysmile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got a few bariatric cookbooks with my Amazon digital credits, and I wasn't impressed. You can find plenty of recipes online for free -- Pinterest is a goldmine. You don't really need special bariatric recipes (except maybe in the initial liquid/pureed/soft food stages when you can't eat "regular" food yet); just look for recipes that meet your nutritional guidelines. Some "keto" and "low-carb" recipes fit the bill, but a lot of them are way too high in fat. I usually search for "skinny" or "ww" (Weight Watchers") recipes, or adapt recipes by making substitutions like riced cauliflower for rice, spaghetti squash for pasta, sugar-free condiments/sauces, etc. -
Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
EmKat replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi. I have had a lap band for 11 and half years. I lost around 100 lbs with it but it turned me into a bulimic because I could eat whatever I wanted and just "regurgitate" it back up. It was a bad cycle to be in, but it kept my weight off. Finally last year I went to my bariatric surgeon and confessed up. He did some tests and realized my esophagus was "floppy" and dilated. He did a complete unfill of my band at the time. I was able to maintain my original weight loss on the keto diet, but after 10 months I fell off the keto wagon and the weight QUICKLY returned. I gained around 50 lbs in 4 months!! I went back to my surgeon a year later and we have decided to remove my lap band and switch to the gastric bypass. He is not a fan of the lap band surgery anymore and is not recommending them to his patients. I have my surgery next week on October 6th. I am nervous because I am 52 now and postmenopausal. Im definitely not as active as I was when I first had my lap band surgery almost 12 years ago. How many people on this forum have had the lap band to bypass? How was their weight loss compared to the first surgery? What differences do you notice with restriction? Anyone having the surgery soon? or recently? Thanks in advance! -
3 weeks post op stopped losing, gained a little????
RickM replied to calvinrn2011's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here is a good explanation of the early (three or third week typically) stall: https://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php The term "NUT" is a derogatory term, though many on the forums may not appreciate it, derived from the fact that many on the forums find that their RDs or nutritionists aren't prescribing the latest fad diet that can be found on the internet, so they refer to them as being "nuts" for being so "ignorant" about nutrition ("everybody" "knows" that you gotta do Atkins/Paleo/Keto or whatever is hot today, to lose weight.....) Fundamentally, this initial stall is primarily part of your body adapting to the large caloric deficit that you are imposing upon it, and has little, if anything, to do with what dietary stage you are on - liquids, mushes, softs, etc. as even those of us who started out on soft foods experience it. Also, it would not be unexpected for your loss rate to slow some once things pick up again, as once you get through this initial phase of depleting your glycogen reserves and actually start burning that stored fat, things shift a bit as glycogen (stored carbs, basically) burn faster than fats - approximately 2000 calories per pound for glycogen vs. 3500 calories per pound for fats, so you will be burning more calories to lose a pound from now on. I never had a notable stall at this point, but there was a distinct dogleg in my loss curve at right about three weeks. -
Keto/Ketogenic Diet for Gastric Bypass?
Treadmillwalker replied to elizabethirenex3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat high Protein (80 to 100) and low carb. I'm banded and find high high fat goes right through. I suggest you gradually increase your fat as you transition to full keto. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App -
I'm nine weeks post op and my nutritionist said if I wanted to do keto now I could. It's exactly what we should be doing, high protein, low carb, good fats. I'm pondering it as I haven't done it before but I have researched it extensively before my surgery and up here " in the country " I have access to getting half a grass fed cow, raising my own chickens, I have my own organic garden, etc. Vermont everything is local, fresh and non gmo etc. BUT it's expensive, hence buying half a cow part. and I applaud and even admire anyone who has had WLS and is vegan, that seems like a lot of work and I am not bashing your choices. I never thought about it as my choice but seeing some of the protein sources they are not as high as traditional meat. Of course i am not a vegan and don't know. Both are lifestyles and choices. I Anyway, good luck with whatever way you want to do. With the no dairy I'm still on the fence, even though i do lactose free milk (fairlife) because its lactose free and has 5 more grams of protein per serving.

A traditional Keto diet is high fats, moderate to low protein. "The general ratio of macros to follow is 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates" https://ketodash.com/keto-diet#macros Hard to meet your protein goals and keep your calories low if you are following those ratios.

I split the difference and get half my protein from very lean meats and half from healthy low glycemic index carbs. Love me some beans and mushrooms and soy and nuts and whole grains. I keep the calories under 1200 and get the best from both worlds. And fruit. Glorious, delicious fruit...is my friend. Watermelon, I want you, I need you and I love you. Keto is fast, but for me, results don't last. Keto drives me right over the edge to a carb melt down that ends in a stupid binge. I need balance, and I'm glad I have a nutritionist who supports this. To those who do well on Keto...best wishes!

Thank you fluffychix! I *try* to keep my calories closer to the 800 range but FAIL. I don’t know why I’m so hungry but I’ll definitely mention this at my appointment next week! I’ve debated going Keto on and off for a while now and I’m also going to mention that next week at my appointment before diving in. I tried Keto years ago and found it wasn’t maintainable in the long term for me. But.. I’m willing to give it another go. I’m just afraid to gain if I decide Keto still isn’t for me. 😒🙄🤷🏼♀️😬😂 I don’t consume liquid calories (minus protein shakes here and there) but I do drink Powerade zero and Gatorade zero along with my water. I didn’t know there was a 6 month stall!! 😭 lol gracious! I’ve stalled on and off so much already! This process is definitely a mental game! My first stall (3 week stall) lasted about 45 days and my second stall lasted about 35 days 😳. Thanks for your response and input!!

5 year post gastric bypass weight gain
catwoman7 replied to NuOutlook's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
lots of people have gone through that (luckily, I only have 10 lbs that I'd like to re-lose, but even that's been a bear!!). Are you still tracking your food intake? If not, I'd start there. And go back to following the rules - as in eating the way we were supposed to be eating once we were a few months out - focusing on protein and non-starchy vegetables, with an occasional small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb. if you're a calorie counter, then track what you're eating now (without making major changes yet) for a couple of weeks to figure out what your average daily calorie intake is. Then cut back by 100 calories or so for a couple of weeks. If that's not working, then cut by another 100 calories. Rinse and repeat until the scale starts heading downward. But know that with only 35 lbs to lose, that scale is going to move pretty slowly. You could also try drastically increasing your activity instead - or in addition - to cutting calories, although that method is usually a lot slower. a lot of people have had luck with formal programs like Weight Watchers, Keto, or intermittent fasting - so those are options as well... good luck with it - it's not easy, although it's good you're catching it now while it's still not really out of control! -
We were told not to do Keto because the extra fat isn't healthy, and can cause more gallbladder issues as you are rapidly losing weight.
-
you're right - Keto isn't the best idea for RNY people. We have a high protein requirement (well, as do sleevers), and many can't handle large amounts of fat. Plus it isn't sustainable for a lot of folks. not sure if you were sort of responding to my comment above yours, but I meant I could handle MCT oil or butter in my coffee - NOT a complete Keto diet. For one thing, my protein requirements are even higher than most WLS patients' - 100+ grams a day. It'd be hard to do that - plus Keto - while staying within my calorie range. Plus my pouch doesn't like fat-laden meals.

With COVID we aren't having a family get-together. It's just me and hubby. I'm making some Keto sausage balls and keto brownies and that's about it. We aren't big on tradition so not having the turkey and trimmings isn't a big deal to us. Hubby and I are on the Carnivore (stricter Keto) diet so we wouldn't be eating much different than any other day anyway. Focus on Thanksgiving as being with family as opposed to being about food.
