  1. I can walk, upping it daily, and do some minor exercises like my arms up to week 10. From week 10 free to explore what I want to do. I will follow this but I’m keen to see how different it was for everyone. When were you cleared?

    Hair loss and extensions?

It's funny. I was just contemplating extensions as well. My naturally curly hair got super dry around 10 weeks and my hair was bypassing tangles and becoming knots. Out of frustration and a little bit of post-VSG depression I gave myself a big chop. I'm going to get consult with my hairdresser to assess the strength of my hair.

Am I the only miserable one?

Similar to you @amylittlelbs, I was a binge eater pre-op. My feelings were if one was good ten was better. As you said, therapy would not hurt. Since my Gastric Bypass was open, meaning I was cut open from stem to stern and closed up with about 35 staples plus a bonus drain. Needless to say I was in a fair bit of pain. Unfortunately, even pre-op, pain made eating nearly impossible. My plan in the first 6 weeks called for pureed foods, 3 meals of 3oz protein + 1oz veggies. It didn't take long for me to want anything I could actually chew. Puree just doesn't satisfy the need. My fantasies ran to any chewable food. In the puree period, after I got my staples out which got rid a most of my pain, I found eating extra flavorful and extra spicy food items. It was much better than bland. Even pureed flavorful food is still favorable, so it made bland, mush into flavorful, well, mush. Having learned how much flavor and spice helped during puree I continued the same with my food food, I just kept the portions to plan size. I did all sorts of Thai food focusing on the meat portions with some of the spicy sauces. Mongolian BBQ made plenty of appearances. Same with Italian foods, but watched the sauces because of the tendency toward fat, but I had enough to get the flavor. I could do a lot of spicy and bold flavors on 3-4oz of protein and 1oz of veggies per meal. Cravings: I certainly had cravings to which I gave in as often as necessary while staying within my plan. You specifically mentioned Pizza which should be no problem if you can live without the crust, which I did when my family had pizza. Motivation: You had motivation and it's understandable that it could waiver when you believe the idea that you can never eat good food again. Who cares if your thin if you can't enjoy a big part of your life that good food can be. How can you succeed if you feel completely deprived. The truth is that you can be compliant to your plan and still eat wonderful flavors. The key element to our post-op eating is portion size, focusing on protein first. You will enjoy your meals and the happiness you once received by overeating you will now associate with healthy, flavorful meals. You will hopefully never return to your previous eating habits, but you can establish new ones that will be just as satisfying in different ways. You will be able to enjoy eating wonderful foods, living a healthier life, and you may be able to participate in things that currently elude you. Good luck, Tek
  4. Hi all, I'd really like to hear only from those that have experienced similar feelings. I've turned to Facebook groups but only get responses from people that haven't experienced what I'm going through and hasn't helped. I'm seeing a psychologist soon but would like to hear from you. Bit of a backstory. I was so close to getting surgery a few years back on the NHS, my motivation was at it's peak and was excited to eat healthier. That was stopped as I moved and there's no support where I am from the NHS, in the meantime I went back to eating whatever I wanted and big portions of it. I managed to get approved by my insurance and it all happened very quickly and I got my bypass on the 20th Jan. Initially I was very excited but the harsh reality of the LRD made me flip 180. Before the surgery I'd never think of food because I forgot to eat due to ADHD. My issue was I'd eat mammoth portions in the evening. Since the surgery all I think of is food, and all the food that got me obese in the first place. I'm not looking forward to or caring for simple meals, I just want pizza or Chinese. I'm not doing anything I shouldn't whilst I'm healing but I'm worried this obsession with naughty food won't go away and the guilt of me even thinking about it is killing me. Is it normal to be looking forward to the "normal" food? Any time I ask people they say they don't have cravings or think about it and that I need to remember why I'm doing this. All valid but not helpful. My motivation is non-existent which is sad as I have had the motivation before Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using BariatricPal mobile app

    Is this a stall?

Thank God I found this post. I’ve been feeling guilty for wondering why my weight loss has stopped. My revision date was January 11 and have been stalled since January 31. The doc told me that the weight loss will be slower this time around and honestly, im feeling good health wise. Im not complaining but good to know its a bit common.

    March 23 buddies yet?

March 7th, I'm getting the bypass! My first appointment was the very end of December, so it's been a whirlwind. I'm excited! Edit: I was so excited, I made a typo 🤣 first appointment was end of November. Still fast...but not crazy crazy fast!

    Dental issues?

It's not a general WLS thing but specifically a Gastric Bypass thing because we tend to mal-absorb some things like, specifically, Iron and Calcium. Interestingly, things like bones and teeth are made with calcium. So if one has bad teeth or bones to start, then add eating less food generally which means consuming less Calcium, then add mal-absorbing calcium, and then perhaps not adding in enough Calcium supplements and viola! teeth get worse and osteoporosis is more problematic. With Iron you end up with anemia. This is a reason supplements are more important for Gastric Bypass folks. There is a bit of good new though. More recent Gastric Bypass surgeries are more often more proximal limbs (less is bypassed) than in older surgeries, so less absorption issues and less problems. If you have a more distal (more bypassed) then think more about supplementation or at least ensure more in your diet. My surgery is older and I think more distal so I'm sure to eat plenty of ice cream Good luck, Tek

    Carbonated Beer

That explains so much. Most of my IRL friends who are bariatric patients had bypass and they seem so confused why I can't drink soda.

    Lapband revision to RNY

    Surgery Date January 10, 2023
  11. I'm getting revision surgery along with repair of my hiatal hernia withFlagstaff Surgery Associates. Dr. Berger and another surgeon there are weight loss surgery specialists. I have Medicare and a supplement, and I expect to be approved even though I have a low BMI because of my Barrett's esophagus and GERD issues.
  12. Just joined this site thanks to my mom who had Bypass about 10 years ago and found this place really helpful during her journey 🤗 I had my Sleeve surgery Jan 23rd. I feel like I'm doing okay but my body is SO tired all the time and I just really want to down water like nobody's business. I really miss being able to drink as much of it as I want

    Outpatient Gastric Bypass

I had the rny bypass and was in agony afterwards. Stayed 3 night in hospital but also in Australia. Ask the clinic if they have links to a medical facilities if you find yourself in difficulties. This is major surgery. Cant be too cautious.

    Carbonated Beer

Note that the the Bypassers that have replied are OK with carbonation and Sleevers tend to issues. It's down to the differences in surgery. Sleevers still have a Pyloric valve at the bottom of their sleeve which stops food and floods so gas only has one place to go: up. RNY has no pyloric valve so food and drink go straight through to the intestines with much more room for gas. Gas now has two directions it can go. As always YMMV. Being a bypass post-op I can drink carbonation pretty easily but still don't do overly quickly. I don't think I had such until maybe 2.5 years post-op. Good luck, Tek

    Outpatient Gastric Bypass

My sister had her bypass in Boston and she was kept for 2 days. I had mine near Boston and was kept for 3 days due to pain management issues. I can't imagine what it would have been like having it as outpatient.
  16. I’m scheduled for an outpatient gastric bypass surgery at a BMI surgical center. Has anyone else had bypass as an outpatient? If so, what was your experience? Any helpful advice? I’m a little nervous to be going home the same day after this type of surgery. 😳
  17. I had bypass and I dump on sugars mostly. I agree with the above posters. I have an early warning system of seeing halos and then spots before my eyes. I find it helpful to get protein quickly to cut the sugar reaction. It happens 15-45 minutes after eating the offensive food. I’ve also had a delayed sugar reactive episode from eating a cup of ramen. It was 2 hours later and felt like dumping. Basically, your body will tell you what you need and what to avoid.

    Carbonated Beer

I had bypass and my surgeon oked alcohol for occasions, which was all I do anyway. One or two beers on a hot 4th of July was fine. I ate a handful of nuts in the middle so I wouldn’t dump. Beer is straight carb with little nutrients so when I’m actively loosing it’s not a good choice. No problems with the carbonation, and there are active fermentation probiotics if you get a good microbrew. I kept up with my water intake all day too, so no dehydration issues. Just stop if you feel icky, that’s pretty much true of most things. I would try it at home first in case you have a problem with dumping from sugar or the different way your body will react to alcohol or carbonation. I’d hate to be at the beach with a super stool softener!

    Convincing the doctor !

BMI is important for revision too?? I’m so discouraged. I calculated my BMI and I am in the “overweight “ category. is that good enough? BTW , thank You for your responses. I appreciate them. does anyone know docs in Pittsburgh willing to do revisions in case mine won’t agree?

    Carbonated Beer

When I had the sleeve I couldn't tolerate carbonation. I found a way around it, as I learned to pour the beer rapidly into a large mug or cup which released the carbonation into foam and allowed me to drink the beer when the foam settled. Unfortunately this little discovery was the single biggest reason I didn't hit my goal weight. I had a revision to bypass a year ago, and strangely now even though my pouch is supposedly smaller than my sleeve I can tolerate carbonation better. I still don't drink a lot of carbonated drinks, but on the occasion I try it seems to be better now.

    Gas pain

I had gastric bypass in March last year. For about 3 or 4 months, I have had ridiculous gas pain and discomfort. I thought it was from making bad food choices so I went back to eating the right stuff. It doesn’t matter what I eat or even if I eat, there is still unbelievable gas. I don’t drink anything carbonated, no coffee or tea, don’t use straws. It doesn’t matter if I exercise or not. Does anyone else have this problem? I had CT scans for a kidney stone problem, the only thing they found was some swollen abdominal lymph nodes and the stones.

    Russian Roulette

I had my sleeve revised to RNY 11/10/22 due to GERD. I stayed on fluids/purées/soft foods advancing very slowly. I didn’t start solid foods until end of December (about 6 weeks). Since then I feel like I’m playing Russian Roulette every time I eat. Sometimes I eat and feel fine without pain or restriction. Other times I will eat the same exact thing, same amount and be doubled over in pain until 4-8 hours later when I finally throw up and the food comes up not even partially digested. Every time I freak that I have an obstruction. Nutritionists say it’s too much fiber or too much fat, but it’s not necessarily associated with diarrhea and why, then, can I tolerate it sometimes and others not? Surgeon is sending me in for an upper GI barium study next week. I’m so stressed that I have stretched my pouch somehow but I can sometimes eat far more volume without issue compared to some of these episodes. Has anyone else experienced this? TMI, I’m also noticing pale colored stools but the pain is on the left, not on the right with my gallbladder. He said my gallbladder looked fine during surgery. I just need this to work so I feel better and can get on with my life.

    Daily blog?

Hi, I have a bypass booked for the 13/3 and I was wondering if anyone had made or come across anyone who has had surgery, preferably recently, and had made a daily blog or journal so you can read about their journey in detail from the beginning? What and how often they ate, how they felt, how many corridor loops they walked, their journey home.... Etc etc.
