South Beach Meal Bars...
2muchfun replied to buckeyegirl4's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Doubtful. You should be eating real food to make the band works it's magic. Slider foods like this may be healthy but they don't give the satiety a real band friendly meal would give. Proteins from meat, vegetables and fruit can stimulate the vagus nerve so that you are more satisfied for longer periods. jmo tmf -

some people cannot process milk post-op (I can't drink more than 4oz without feeling ill) so it's all up to what you can get in. Milk is high in carbs and sugar but also 9g of Protein per cup - Kaylee Ann ~ Surgiversary: 6/11/12

I am on my liquid diet (started today) awesome timing, a day before Thanksgiving. That really is not bothering me so much though. What is getting to me (yes, first day) is I do not like the food. The cream of chicken soup (Health wise) is tolerable and the pudding/shakes. I can not stand the other just plain soups...so along road ahead of me. I have done perfect today with vitamins and water and protein shakes along with the Health wise items..but I am craving some asparagus tonight. I am thinking...of all the things to cheat with..that is not horrible, and wondering if I choose to do some sauteed asparagus every night with some garlic how will that effect my liquid diet and shrinking my liver?

My First Dr Appointment
Scaredy Cat replied to Jimbo_D's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know how you feel!!! My first appointment is next week and I'm hoping my doctor agrees with my decision to be sleeved instead of the bypass. In the seminar, he discounted the lapband and essentially useless now (too many problems), said he's done thousands of bypasses (which he has) and said that the sleeve has not been tested for 40 years like the bypass has but is a viable option. But, in my opinion, it's been tested enough. There are people on this site who are going on five or more years and seem to love it. Good for you for knowing what you want. Fingers crossed that I don't chicken out next week. -
My MD suggests 60 grams per day. I have a high protein shake once a day to make sure I get that number.

I met with my nutritionist this week and he gave me my Pre-op diet plan. I thought I would share since I haven’t been able to find a vegan plan on this website. 7-14 days prior to surgery The following diet will provide you with approximately 1000 calories and should meet your daily Protein requirements. The purpose of this diet is to deplete your glycogen (fat) stores, which in turn will help the liver to shrink and make your weight lost operation easier and safer. lean meat substitutes (70 grams protein) 2-3 cups non starchy vegetables Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, carrots, tomato, green Beans, asparagus, radish, pickles, mushrooms May use fat free low calorie dressing or hummus 3 tsp fat Olive oil, canola oil, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flaxseed oil, Walnuts, Hemp Oil or Sesame oil Calorie Free liquids Water, propel, crystal light, fruit2O, plain coffee, plain tea Protein Supplement Protein shake Garden of Life Raw Protein Beyond Organic Protein Formula I’ve already started this diet even though I don’t have a date set. I am having a hard time getting in 1,000 calories.

I'm nervous...
onelessfatgirl replied to onelessfatgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much everyone, your support means a lot!! I told my patents last night. My mom isn't really too in-the-know about cuurent wls options. She first gave me some of the "I hope you know what you are doing.... this is permanent.... I hope you understand the risks." I think, based on some of her questions, that she initially thought I'd be getting roux-en-y. She asked if I'd be on shakes the rest of my life and if I'd ever be able to sit down and eat a meal with them. She said she didn't understand why I'd be able to stick to a diet post-op but not before. I shared with her some research findings about the long term success rates of those who have over 100lbs to lose and attempt it ::eye roll:: "the natural way." She said she'd like to see me thin and happy and I interrupted her and told her this was more than what I look like; it's about my long term well being, preventing health issues, living a life with and for my family (especially my kids). I shared with her some of the things that keeps me from living fully like, last week NOT taking my 7 year old to the school skating party because my DH was out of town and my knees have been killing me and frankly I was worried that if I fell I'd seriously injure myself, embarrass my son, and be out of commission for a while. Interestingly, she didn't ask about my husband or his thoughts. Which, I totally appreciate that one of her go-to thoughts wasn't about my husbands take or influence. I think she knows me well enough to know I'm my own woman, with a strong mind and personality. I'm sure she'll talk to my sister but I anticipate my sister will be supportive as she's been banded. I invited her to ask me more questions or talk to me about her concerns. So, we'll see how it goes. My DH told me he was very proud of me for facing my parents. I don't let many people rattle me but boy, they sure can. I respect them so much and how smart and strong they have been throughout their lives. But I'm a grown woman who has to do what's right for me and my little family. -
Keeping protein shakes down?
Sunnybaby replied to shahada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same issues with the protein drinks and powder. I bought the unflavored unjury and it had a funny smell. My surgeon said to try the unflavored powder in Crystal Light. It tasted a bit like Jello but I couldn't get over the consistency. I have heard from other people that when you add the unflavored powder in add it just a tablespoon at a time to things throughout the day. That might help. -
Keeping protein shakes down?
Bob2013 replied to shahada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe try unflavored protein powder and some sort of sugar free flavoring. -
Hi - I agree with all of the info in the previous posts. Also, please try not to drink anything while eating or it will flush things right through and prevent you from feeling full. Anything that just crumbles up will go through also. You really need to focus on protein items. I know yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. isn't exciting but it stays with you longer. After awhile when you are eating regular foods you will notice that regular food items like potatoes, meats, breads, pasta will def fill you up and possibly get stuck so make sure that you don't forget and take big bites and not chew. The problem is that when you get these items stuck in there drinking will not flush them through, it will make them come back up. It is a learning game and it really takes awhile to learn all of the dos and don'ts. Don't give up!!!

Are you supposed to be on soft foods due to the fill? They don't do much for satiety. Neither do pretzels, really. But you say you are on soft foods just to stay mentally in the game. Solid Proteins are what will help you to feel full. Once cleared for solids after the fill, eat plenty of solid proteins and complex carbs. Those are what will keep hungry at bay.
-
I did not get restriction until 10.6 CC's in a 11 CC band. Pretzels are a slider food! Anything that you chew and disolves in your mouth (pretzels, chips, cookies) are sliders. I agree with previous posters the two days after you should be on solids esp protein; that's what keeps you full. My doctor does'n really want me having protein shakes as anything liquid goes right through the band. Think of it as a funnel to your stomach. Liquids go right through the funnel!

I lost 50 lbs peo-op but on a low carb/ high protein diet. No pills. Good Luck!

If it makes you feel any better, I did it and I'm 19. I know this will be good for me in the long run towards better health. Also you don't have to completely cut out those things, but you do have to focus on Protein as much as possible. You'll be able to enjoy foo, just in restricted and more reasonable proportions...in my opinion, having to cherish what little portions we have will allow us to enjoy food even more. I also feel little bubbles if I drink too much. I think I am going to burp really big, and then just a little bit of air trickles out. Now that I am on mushy foods it is not as bad. I get full really quick and it lasts a few hours. I also am having trouble getting all my protein in. My doc wants us to shoot for 80-100 grams a day. I think I average 70-80.
-
Yeah - that's sort of the same feeling I have. Slow moving stuff. My only worry is that it takes so long to get that stuff in and I have to get that 60 grams of protein. ... so much to remember. I'm glad I'm home until Monday. Maybe I'll get into some kind of routine with this. I don't want to go back to work and blow my whole eating/drinking schedule. I try to take all the meds/etc first thing in the morning so I only have to concentrate on fluids and protein for now. Any other suggestions?

I have this feeling like theres a rock right under my breastbone. Like things are moving REAL slow. It makes me not want to put anything in there. For the first day or two, I don't think it was so apparent but maybe that was because I was in so much darned PAIN! I'm taking in my shakes slowly and am grateful for the fact that I can feel the change in my stomach. I will use it to my advantage and take as little as possible to satisfy my daily quotient. Speaking of daily quotient...gawd, my husband has become a drill sargeant! *man voice* "You really need to get with the program...you aren't getting nearly enough Protein. He cracks me up! I tell him 'I'm only on day 2, you goofball!' ... *man-voice* 'oh yea...well, ok.' lmao He is so sweet and took the entire week off for me. I think I should send him back to work...like yesterday hehehee. I'm feeling a bit better today (day 3). Each day seems to be improving exponentially.

Did you feel you needed a fill or did you just get one cause you thought you need to lose weight. If you think you need to lose weight you have to go easy on yourself you just had a baby. I would get an unfill and focus on eating fruit, vegies, dairy and animal protein so you and your baby, if your still breast feeding, keep in good health. I have no kids but I remember hearing somewhere it takes a year for your body to go back to normal after a baby.

Question about 2 week liquid diet
Peanutz53 replied to Zoumommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had this problem on my preop diet. For dinner I started having a small salad with Protein in it. It helped. -
I am also October 30th and am on day 4 of pre-op liquids. I am getting nervous. I am drinking broth, tea with skim milk and Splenda, Campbell's soup on the go, beef broth and pure protein shakes. I don't crave sweet as much as salty so the soups really help. I am still nervous but resolved to do this. I am hoping for an easy recovery mainly, I feel like once I get back to "normal" I will be good at maintaining, I am just nervous about the itst 8 weeks post op, especially with work and the holidays.

I know this has been posted before but I really want to get the word out. I was approved yesterday for two Protein shakes a day, every day, for 11 months. How's that for some math!! Plus my Vitamins, scar reducer, l-glutamine!!! For free through insurance. Apply as soon as you have a date, it takes 2 weeks approval and then they send over for a prescription from your doctor and ship it off. http://www.insurenutrition.com that's it Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

PCOSers: How did you lose Pre-Op Weight?
RinR replied to bookaddict's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When is your surgery date? Is it 10 to 15 pounds you need to lose or 10% of what you weigh?? Didn't your surgeons office give you an eating plan to drop the weight before your surgery?? Two weeks before my surgery I was put on a total liquid diet. I had to order the Protein powder to make the shakes from a web-site. They have you loss this weight prior to surgery for 2 reasons First is because when you are lying down, as you will be for surgery, your liver rests on the very top of your stomach. This is were the band is placed and the Dr. has to move the liver out of his way so he can put the band on. Being on the diet/liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery will shrink your liver. And second, 99.9% of us will have a "last" huge meal, and if we were not told to loss some weight before our surgery we would be eating something while being wheeled into the operating room! -
It is pretty normal to have diarrea during liquid phase. Then it is normal to have constipation too.... Most of us have figured out how to balance it out over time, but it can be frustrating. I had surgery recently, and in spite of using miralax daily i developed constipation which is not typical for me. Anyway, I am off the meds now, taking Probiotics and order is being restored to the universe. If you have cramps, intestinal upset, you are probably having trouble digesting. If it is just a tad of diarrea, probably normal for an all liquid diet. I drink premier Protein, but every once in a while it starts giving me cramps and runs... like I develop an intolerance to something in there. My former NUT told me to take 3 months off and try again, and sure enough I was fine after taking time off from it. Weird though.

Started adding more protein in now via whey protein shakes but having a bit of diarrhea. Should I stick to clear proteins? Nutritionist recommended maybe lactaid milk instead of skin plus. Could be just stomach adjusting? Ugh. Very frustrating. I hate GI issues too.
