monmarie replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey girl! Stay hydrated! Stay on top of your fluids, Anxiety could’ve boosted that heart rate pretty quickly. It’s a life long change. Don’t beat yourself up, stay focused and aim for the prize of better health. I’m 4 days post op of bypass. I initially felt terrrrible but I’m keeping up on fluids and walking. I came home 10 lbs heavier from the gas and fluids too, this morning I’m down again to my preop. Do your best and focus. Mind over matter. You got this. Take your time and let your body adjust, we made some big changes! -

I dont smoke myself but my friend smokes and she has gastric bypass done 3 years ago, she said she waited until she was on the full diet mainly because she wanted to make sure she got use to the amounts she could eat, the amount of times including snacks everything just because she didn't want to get high near a meal time and tale a few bites to many... she figured once her was in a routine of all that it would be easier for her to maintain her portions and smoke as needed, her biggest fear was taking even 2-3 more bites then supposed to because that made her hurt, uncomfortable and sometimes throw up, and she was afraid of eating faster then she was supposed to because her time is off when she's high and that causes the same symptoms as too much food for her.... She saids she's been smoking again for a few years now, and would just suggest you be very careful when you start back up because even if you feel you have everything under control now, and don't normally get certain types of highs your whole body system is changing not just your stomach.... her highs changed after and you just need to watch for that, and be very careful when your stomach is still healing. Other then that everyone is different and handles things differently, if you try and you do fine great if you try and feel you need to wait longer by all means do what's best for you [emoji6] Sent from my SM-G996U using BariatricPal mobile app -
September surgery buddies!!

I am still not able to eat veggies, but I can tolerate some fruit. I think it may be a sleeve/bypass thing. My doctor did tell to avoid a lot of fiber. -

September surgery buddies!!

Does anyone else still have foods that they can't eat well? I'm so sad that chicken and apparently turkey are still an issue for me. I can eat the deli version of them so it makes no sense to me and its frustrating. I also am having a slight issue with clementines/halos. Its my newest favorite snack, which of course usually changes weekly. I eat about 2 or 3 of them in a sitting, they are about 2 inches across so smaller then usual. I eat them little section by section so I don't think I'm eating them too fast but I get a burning like stomach acid. I have the bypass so I don't think its the acid from me but maybe the halos are too acidic for my new stomach? I take a tums and it goes away and no other issues, so of course I still eat them lol. I hope I'm not being stupid and hurting myself though. -
November 2022 surgery support!

Had bypass the 22nd. … yesterday was the worst of it didn’t want to drink anything only sleep. Today not feeling pain or nausea. Really paying attention to my liquids and intake to get my fluid goal. Hiccups woke me up the middle of the night. Adding ice to my protein shakes to water down since they are to thick. -
3 months post op and I'm done.
Mariann812 replied to fed-up's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Everyone has their own expectations regarding how they want to look. I am down 70lbs at 5.5 months gastric bypass. I am beyond ecstatic. I have never felt better. I was wearing 3X at day of surgery. I’m sizing down again to Size 8 in JCREW pants. My face does look very thin and there is some sagging. I have lost the fat pads in my face which was to be expected. I am having laser ablation in January followed by Botox/fillers and PDO threads. My goal weight is still 20 lbs away. I know my surgeon is going to tell me I’ve lost enough now, but I am aiming to lose the last 20 lbs. Everyone’s different. You have to do ‘you.’ -
Stricture 3 weeks after gastric bypass
catwoman7 replied to Laura M's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had two - one at four weeks out and one at eight weeks out (they almost always occur within the first three months post-op. They're very rare after that). My clinic sent me over to the hospital to get an EGD (the doctor who did it was not a bariatric surgeon - he was just someone on the hospital staff who does EGDs). They knock you out - you won't feel anything or know what's happening. And I felt 100% better afterward. when I had mine, I first noticed I had what seemed like acid reflux, which I thought was odd since bypass usually cures that. A couple of days later, I was having a hard time keeping food down, which is when I called my clinic. if you're able to keep fluids down, they may not get you in right away - it may be a couple of days. If you can't keep fluids down, either, then that's critical - they'll get you in ASAP. People can live without food for a few days (or longer...), but not fluids. -
Hello Everyone, I'm terrified that I have a stricture, as I've had a couple episodes of food coming up. But the last two days I have become more and more full as the days wears on and it feels like my stomach stays full. Tonight I could not get in enough food before my stomach started hurting. Does this sound like a stricture? If so, I've read an EGD and dilation is done. Does your bariatric surgeon do that? I ask because mine is on maternity leave so I'm scared of what will happen. How soon would this surgery take place? I'm hoping I can at least take protein shakes but I'm burping after every sip. Any advice or information from those who have gone through this would be great. Thanks. Laura

I’m back / Cold Feet

I think you have to be 100% ready for change. If you needed to pause and think about it, that’s great. Surgery is scary and change is scary. I had major doubts the morning of surgery but I told myself that was just anxiety and went through with it. Bypass was the BEST thing I’ve ever done for myself. You have the rest of your life to look forward to. -

Drinking water with meals and other post-op fears
catwoman7 replied to LMorales's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I thought the water thing would be really hard, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Taking vitamins hasn't been a big deal, either. It seems overwhelming at first, but after awhile I was on auto-pilot. I take a small handful with breakfast and another small handful in the late afternoon, then my iron before I go to bed. I'm a bypass patient, so you'll likely take fewer vitamins than I do since you're considering VSG. so those two fears are really not anything to be concerned about. The regain one is, though. Losing the weight isn't all that difficult as long as you follow your clinic's plan. It's the continual work it takes to keep the weight off. You really do have to monitor yourself for life - otherwise, if bad habits start creeping back in, your weight will start to go up again. I struggle with it every day - but, it's worth it to me. I never, ever want to be morbidly obese again. P.S. I should add that I was NEVER able to keep weight off for long before surgery. Now, it's a challenge, but do-able. I've managed to keep it off for six years. I have much better habits now, I exercise regularly, and my stomach can't hold as much. Eating over 2000 cal/day is painful for me now (and I rarely do it). Before surgery, 2000 kcal would have been a "diet" level for me. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!

I hope this was a pep talk and not a lecture! If it helps you refocus then brilliant. You've already done so well, he's probably just willing you to go further. I came here to wish all my November 2021 friends a happy anniversary. I'm just past mine, pretty much done losing at this point I think - I've lost 1lb in the last 5 weeks, but I am maintaining without too much thought. I still do track every single bite I eat, just out of habit, and I think I need to! It would be so easy to slip. I hope you are all happy with where you are, and that those of us who still have a bit to go can keep it up! Would you have believed a year ago you would lose what you have? I certainly wouldn't. 🤩 Just for the record I weigh 154lbs, that's a total loss of 122lbs since 2 months pre-op and 97lbs since the day of surgery. I'm maintaining on about 1400 calories a day on weekdays and probably 1700-1800 at the weekend because I drink alcohol then. -
Post op gastric bypass Pain
RoyallyElevated posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s been a week after gastric bypass surgery and I’m on thick liquids not taking pain meds much anymore but every time I drink or have my soups my stomach hurts a lot. Protein shakes are really sweet and hurt my stomach even water and popsicles. Plus I’m lactose intolerant and sensitive to corn ingredients so I stay away from those so I know that’s not where the pain is coming from. Anyone else have pain after eating or drinking post op? -
Sleeve to DS
Scorpio_Qveen_21 replied to rlmontgomery's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had gerd & was able to get the conversion from sleeve to DS. My surgery was November 18, 2022. I had 2 bouts of acids reflux the night of surgery but nothing since. Also, my surgeon prescribed Protonix to be taken daily for 3 months even if I don’t have any reflux issues. As far as recovery…. My stomach is still bloated from all the air they pumped in me prior to surgery. I also had my gallbladder taken out as well, so my stomach is a bit sore. Sleeping with a pillow pressed against my stomach helps me sleep really well. I’m able to get in my protein & water with no issues thus far. My body is tired, but I feel pretty good overall. -
Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
Wrenna replied to heartofmercury's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm three months out from mini bypass and had a Thanksgiving dinner with friends a few days ago. My plate was about a third turkey, and then a bite or two of everything else. It worked out really well - I felt like I was able to enjoy the meal along with everyone else. I didn't bother tracking that meal because I religiously track everything else, and I knew that if I missed my protein goals or went over my calories that day, it wasn't going to be by much. We're also having our own (very toned down) Thanksgiving and I'm planning on doing the same thing - a decent serving of turkey, and then a taste of everything else. It helps that I'm still pretty food... ambivalent? and that I'm not really interested in sweet things since the surgery. -

Got a call from my doctor today that for TOMORROW I might have to get the bypass instead of sleeve… due to some intestinal metaplasia, and small piece of esophagus showing it’s a bit irritated… he’s going to scope again before procedure to determine…. I’m a tad bit freaking out now… anyone here recently get bypass? How are you feeling? -
I am scheduled to have surgery on November 30th. 9 more days! I am on preop diet and wondering if I can add propel packets to my bottles of water? Thanks

Having GERD. Will insurance cover revision if BMI IS 31?
kcuster83 replied to NewlySleeved12282020's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The best thing top do is call your insurance company and discuss it with them. Or, wait for your doctor apt and let them fight the battle for you. Insurance companies are so finicky it is hard to say. Sometimes they deny just for a "code" being entered wrong. You dr. office will know how to enter it and make it clear it is not for WL reasons, etc. Goodluck GERD SUCKS! I had it for years and my gastric bypass has completely resolved it. (I did NOT have sleeve, I went with bypass from the start because of already having such severe GERD before hand. -
I just experienced my first adverse reaction to food that felt like could be dumping. Im a week and a half out from bypass and on puréed food. I had the tummy issues and nauseous and dizziness and anxiety reaction. But it only lasted maybe 15 minutes. It was a milk based protein snack with only 4g added sugar (8g total sugar) and 2 g fat so I’m not sure how that would be dumping. I’ve had some issues with lactose since surgery but not to this extent. Does this sound like dumping?

In 2020 I had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve as well as a single vessel bypass. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and due to significant stenosis (very common with bicuspid valves), I was barely pumping any blood to my body. As far as meds, I'm now off most of my BP meds, but likely will be on Atorvastatin and Carvedilol the rest of my life.

Hi Laura! I’m still fairly new to this whole process also. My gastric bypass was on October 13th. I’m also struggling with weakness and also lack of energy. It definitely has improved since my 2 week post op but still am wishing I had more energy. I have been doing a lot of reading on this group and it sounds like what we are feeling is normal, but it is still hard to deal with every day. Any major surgery will take time to heal so I’m sure your doctor is correct. I guess I don’t have much for advice except keep the faith that everything we go through is worth the better health we get in return. Take care and know that there are many super supportive people out here that care about your progress and success! Tracy

November 2022 surgery support!
designated-knitter replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello all, had Gastric Bypass on 11/14 and so far it has been way easier and less painful than expected. The only thing is I put on 10 pounds over night from when I was weighed before surgery and when I got home the next day. I’m SLOWLY losing that water weight… but still 4 pounds higher than when I went in. but I’m walking, drinking well, getting tired of protein shakes… would kill for some grilled salmon or even cottage cheese! fortunately, my appetite is under control so when my son eats his meals, I’m not (too) jealous!
