Seeking advice on behavior modification post surgery
MowryRocks replied to Catherine Keegan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Start with committing yourself to small changes or if you have the willpower...drastic ones. I started my journey pre-seminar with seeing if I could handle a liquid diet for 2 weeks. I figured if I couldn't do it before the surgery was even a possibility than how could I do it later. Once I got that under my belt, I started a modified keto plan, which I actually enjoyed. I also started behavior modification regarding physical activity right away. I just started walking a little and kept building on where I started. By the time I had surgery (I had a 6 month pre-op program) I was walking 5ks. I did my first walk post surgery at 6 weeks. Today, I am 7 months post op and training to RUN a 15k. All things that I couldn't have done had I waited. Good Luck! -

I don't do a lot of sugar free stuff. I can't remember the last time I did, actually. I eat a decent amount of vegetables and almost no fruit except a bite or two from a platter now and then. I even went off keto and upped my whole grains a bit to see if it helped to bulk up on carby fiber. No luck. Still just what my kid calls "butt water." Haha -
5/31 - Yeah that whole liquid diet thing is not going to work for me. The protein drinks made me sick and I just could not force myself to do it. Oh well. Back to keto is was. Instead of the gym, I ended up a BJ's with my Mom. She had me pushing around a flatbed cart with 4 waters boxes, 2 pepsi boxes, 2 coke boxes, 4 kool aid jammers, 2 Gatorades and 2 powerades. The hardest work out I ever had. I was sweating in the frozen food section lol.
6/1 - Had my off. I went to a party at one of my friends house. I put on makeup and dressed really pretty. I was feeling myself. I got hit on by 3 guys. I was just awkward because I am not used to that much attention. It was really weird. I was like, "Thank you. Goodnight." the whole time lol.
6/2 - Continued with the keto diet. I have however made some alterations to it. I make sure to get in 50 - 70g of protein a day. I keep the carbs below 20g and the fat falls in where ever they do. It is actually a pretty easy diet to follow.
6/3 - Nothing special. Just a regular day.
6/4 - Lost 4.6 lbs this week!! I was having a minor stall and my month of May was not that great. I am just happy with the progress that I made. I am 214.2 lbs. I just never envisioned that I would be at this weight.
-
Yay! Sounds like a great week you had. Glad you didn't go back to the pre-op...just another diet. 😊 Find what you are going to do forever hon, that's key. That'll be a lifestyle and not a "diet".
-
I agree with Newme. Find a sustainable lifestyle that you are 100% comfortable with. I know this is sometimes easier said then done... I think you are doing great, 4.6 pounds lost is a lot!!

I really enjoy keto and meal prepping for it. I find that I do not have to think about it too much and I have so many options when it comes to the recipes. I just have the difficulty shopping and finding certain key snacks and ingredients. My whole foods and trader joes look like a Walmart Super Center.

May 15th, 2017 Sleevers Check in Here!!!
Newme17 replied to Newme17's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Apple1 Thank you hon. I honestly think the keto and carb restricted diet is going to get them in trouble down the road. In my opinion, they're fad diets all over again. keto is good for certain people with certain issues, like autism, epilepsy, etc. I have read studies on the keto in regards to this diet helping them from having seizures, etc. Pretty fascinating actually. It's good to lose weight in the beginning, but long term it's not sustainable. I just don't think it's a good lifestyle diet to be on. That's just my personal opinion. But if someone wants to do it, then that's their thing. I won't nail them down for doing so. I'm glad it's helping you out though. Knowledge is POWER!! lol -

I have been keeping up with that thread and I think your contributions are helpful. Many people do not want or need to eat a keto or carb restricted diet. I am learning so much about diet and nutrition these past few months and it is going to be so useful moving forward. -
Can't figure out how to lose again
Berry78 replied to cstem's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm glad to hear things are so much easier than before for you. My rationale: I believe in the set point theory. I'll assume you are familiar with it. So it is easy to maintain the body's set point, and hard to change it. I don't know what the OP's set point is, but if the weight won't come off, then that's a good indication she is there. You, yourself sound like you are benefitting from a happy set point. You gain a few pounds, deviate from it, and it's easy to go back. The more I'm learning about keto, insulin, and hormonal involvement, etc, ... I don't know... still trying to figure this stuff out. -

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
Joann454 replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is exactly what my NUT likes but she's at odds with the head of surgery as he's all about low carb. I'm with him and as soon as I can eat real food carbs are getting kicked to the curb for keto. I've been very unsuccessful on low fat/moderate carbs. When I'm in ketosis I feel great and I'm not hungry -
I have been a little MIA for a while trying to finish up my final graduate school classes-and I finally graduated! In the midst of the last year I've had some regain and trying to lose it. i'm also dealing with a ball out of left field- a possible cancer diagnosis. I have had a very persistent ovarian cyst for about 15 months. I've changed forms of birth control during that time and the thing has grown and shrunk multiple times. My Ob-Gyn has been very appropriate, following the ACOG rules and seeing me every few months and doing many MANY ultrasounds. Now it's changing and I'm having some strange symptoms that she (nor I) will dismiss- and Friday I had a CA-125 blood test. Because I'm a nurse and going through Nurse Practitioner education right now I have access to very professional scientific databases of research. The research has shown over and over that a Ketogenic diet seems to show great results in various types of cancer treatment. This has to do with the fact that insulin/glucose cycle feeds tumors and on a keto approach you drop your glucose intake and stabilize insulin resistance... So today i'm doing some cooking and tomorrow the hubs and I will embark on a full blown Keto journey. i'm a bit nervous because without a gall bladder i'm sure i'll have some dumping syndrome, but in any case my doctor ALSO fully endorsed this approach when I saw her-which I was happy about (since many doctors look at you with glazed eyes when you mention any change in eating). I know that many bariatric folks don't do keto but this is much more than a weight loss attempt right now- it could be my life on the line... Thank you for letting me ramble. I would just like to ask each of you-regardless of which religious/spiritual approach you take, to please pray for me/send me positive thoughts, vibes, etc. I really need them and will update as I know more in the next 2 weeks.

Can't figure out how to lose again
Shells_Almost_There replied to cstem's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been struggling and have experienced a gain - that for the first time since surgery, I'm unable to shake off in a decent amount of months. I'm 3.5 years out and it's astounding how much has changed. So, my answer has been to enroll in a medically-supervised diet program so that I can have accountability and a very specific nutrition plan. My insurance happens to cover it (all but the cost of food), and I'm committing to giving it a number of months - both to reset my habits and to continue on my weight loss journey. I don't know if this type of thing might be of interest, but I thought I'd mention it. Otherwise, I agree with posters above about Keto, or other specific plans like that - where it keeps us in check and closer to a pre-op diet. I know some people who've had a lot of success with Whole 30 or Paleo as well. Adding exercise might be an option for you, and definitely keep the snacking in check (one of my biggest issues). Best of luck! -
Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
Berry78 replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This tickled me, because I wasn't trying to be rude! Lol. I Understood Low Carb to be daily consumption under 100g, and Keto to be daily consumption under 20g, but Outside seemed be be implying that there was more to the story, but I didn't see where she said what the more was. I'm honestly still confused on the matter, but I guess I'll figure it out eventually, and it doesn't matter at this point, cuz I'm doing low carb, not keto. -
Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
slimmingsteff replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lift heavy right now, and go to the gym 6x a week. Do weights + cardio. I will most definitely continue my love for the gym post op. Although sedentary or not, carbs are supposed to be ok as long as you don't eat more than your activity level. Everyone is different. I would probably fail on keto and binge on carbs. But if I keep carbs apart of my meals, no reason to binge or feel deprived I've lost 5.7 pounds in a week, and I've been eating 100+ carbs, 80g of protein and about 50g of fat. -
HELP!!!!!
Navigating the Wilderness replied to Johnny1313's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Is it possible to go to a different surgeon that is covered by your insurance? 90 days is ridiculous. My surgeon required exactly 1 day of a liver reducing diet, and that was the day before surgery. If you have to lose weight and fast, you could try a liquid diet, but I was absolutely miserable when I had to do this for 2 weeks post-op, plus it is not sustainable and when you go back to solids you will gain weight, but if it was a deal where I HAD to lose weight in a short time-frame or I would lose my job I would do it. A more sustainable weight-loss program would be keto, but it may take a bit to kick in. Please let us know what is going on. -

Yeah I think in Europe, they use the term LCHF more than Keto, in the past to use an app that had settings for it, Lifesum. The yearly cost was too high last year (I just checked and they lowered it if you buy a year at a time) so I switched back to LoseIt. The Developers of Cronometer have settings for Keto also. I think I might spend the evening taking another look at Cronometer. I used to use it to make nutrition labels for my custom recipes. -
How to decide on best surgery
blizair09 replied to fastfoodaddictnomore's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
At 6'0", I weighed 397 pounds when I started my journey in March 2016 with my six month pre-op diet program. I decided on the sleeve because the idea of re-routing my insides bothered me. I think that it is more about what you do with your tool than anything else. I embraced a keto way of eating for the entirety of my six-month pre-op diet program, and lost 99 pounds by the day of surgery. I have continued that way of eating post-op (even through the food stages), and I have lost an additional 102 pounds (I got below 200 pounds for the first time in 19 years recently), and now I am only about 16 pounds away from my goal (180 pounds and a normal BMI). I am hoping to get there by the end of the summer. Changing your relationship with food, staying on your plan, and getting up and exercising are keys to success with this journey. Too many people on this site get one of the surgeries and then seem to do nothing with it. They lose some weight during the "honeymoon phase" (when it is all but impossible to not lose weight), and then it all goes to hell when any more weight loss (or even maintenance) requires good decisions about food and drink. Talk with your surgeon and together you can decide which procedure is right for you. But making sure that you are ready to deal with the mental battle of the journey is the best thing you can do for yourself. Good luck! -
Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?

It really isn't Keto because if the meat is lean and the spinach is plain, that is just low carb. The key to eating keto, is the fat ratio. -

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
OutsideMatchInside replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Low carb isn't keto and keto isn't low carb. People keep mixing up the terms and they are not the same thing. A post-op diet is low carb, not keto. Almost all bariatric diets post-op are low carb and low fat (which is kind of impossible). The reason so many people fail at Keto is because they don't understand what it is or how it works. You have to set your macros and control the ratios carefully. If you aren't you are just low carbing, which is fine, but it isn't Keto. Unless you are vegetarian/vegan, you are going to low carb for the rest of your life anyway if you are eating properly in the right order. If you have plate of food, you are supposed to eat your protein FIRST. First means ALONE not alternating bites with other foods, FIRST. If you have your proper portion of protein 3-4 ounces, and you finish that, THEN eat your veggies/carbs, you will be lucky to get an ounce of those items in. The protein is going to make you full by eating it first. People don't follow these directions, they eat alternating bites. They don't measure and weigh their portions. If you eat your veggies alternating bites with your protein, you can eat a lot more food, and you won't feel as full and you will not get all your protein in. This is why I eat my veggies separate at snacks so I can get enough veggies in while meeting my protein goals. If I didn't eat my veggies separate, I would never eat any, because 3 to 4 ounces of protein fills me up. On a typical day I eat 4 cups of spinach. That is pretty much the sum of my carbs, and it is barely 4 carbs, the rest of my carbs are from half and half. If I have broccoli instead I might hit 6 carbs in broccoli and even that is a stretch because broccoli is more filling and I can't eat as much of it as I can of spinach. If you are eating protein and green veggies, it is basically impossible not to low carb. -

PatientEleventyBillion replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So.. similar to a keto diet. When you're intake is less than a thousand calories a day, to attain that amount of protein means __________. The way the body burns off fat is through ketosis. Body produes ketones when deprived carbohydrates to tell the body to use other sources of energy, called gluconucleogenesis -- this is especially healthy in obese people. It's no surprise when people find themselves eating sliders like bread, rife with wheat at that, they retain water and find themselves stalling or retaining fluids as @her1981just emphasized as I was typing this up. The only reason during weight loss to up their caloric intake, and carbs, is if they're body building or doing significant exercise. For the vast majority of people on sites like this who are sedentary or low active, carb intake is proportionate to chances of failure. -

Nope. I'm not really being guided by my surgeon or a NUT since I'm getting my surgery out of the country. But from the support groups I'm on, and the recipes page, everyone seems to be following a keto diet. (Low carb, high fat, high protein) So many recipes include cheese, butter, etc. Everything is ok in moderation, but eating "sandwiches" where your bread is replace by cheese constantly just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I love healthy fats (avocado, nuts, etc) but too much fat like butter and cheese scare me :x -

My doctor/nut plan for the first 2 months was 3 oz protein + 1 oz vegetable. In month 3 i was allowed to add fruit. I was definitely in keto back then - I can tell by the gross bad breath!! It was in month 4 or 5 that I ate bread and pasta at a party and bam, I spent the next 3 days fighting head hunger. You have an open mind about exploring and inquiring so I know you'll do great and find what works best for you. -

I'm confused. Are your surgeons and NUTS recommending keto? Why would you have weight loss surgery and then go on what is basically a fad diet? I had surgery to stop letting fad diets get in my head. Yes, they work. Fad diets always have. Until they don't. If I follow the guidelines my surgeon and NUT gave me, I'm ultimately eating low carb anyway. They don't recommend simple carbs, and I admit like everyone else, they don't work for me. But I shake my head at all of these post op people following keto plans. It sounds to me like keto is to lose weight. Surgery should accomplish that on its on. It did for me.
