Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Seeking Mentor
Renee74 replied to livinhealthy72's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My favorite way to drink a protein shake is to put a spoonful of pb and ice then blend! I use EAS chocolate fudge from walmart. I crave these shakes, plus it helps that I love ice cream and this kind of replaces that for me. I am an ice cream addict. I did good not having a snack but now I have 2 sometimes 3 a day. Mostly healthy but not always. Maybe when winter is over and we are not cooped up so much it will be better for me. -
I've had 600 calories today at 6 weeks out and I stretched out a meal over 50 minutes today. It's the first and last time I'm going to do this, as I normally have a meal within 20 minutes but today, I took my tuna (one can) It's the small can- not a mini one but the small one, I think around 4oz of tuna. I took the oil out and ate it on it's own on my little baby plate lol. I ate what I could and left the plate for 10 minutes and went back to it, finishing it in 50 minutes. Well, I know I'm paranoid, but reading what other people can eat I feel it might be too much! But then I thought, maybe it's because I didn't do my normal thing of setting a time limit. I can not eat chicken in this way so I suspect it's the fact that it's soft Protein, that enables me to eat a little more of it. I'm nervous my sleeve has stretched but logically I'm thinking, how has it stretched? It's just I compare myself to so many others with what they can and can't eat. I know I sound SO paranoid but I'm scared to ruin my sleeve. Anyone else get this fear? Saying that, I have to try and get to 600 calories a day, or I would comfortably stop at 300. I've always been more of a volume eater than a grazer and nowadays, I get bored with eating my meals. The portions are so tiny I have to have 6 meals to get to at least 600 calories so I guess today I put the tuna on my plate and thought I would eat it slowly. Lesson learned! back to 20 minute little meals! It made me feel a bit too full for what I would aim for and probably went over with a spoon or two extra.

do you weigh or measure your food?
BetsyB replied to Takingmylifeback's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Both. Solid protein, I weigh, and eat between 2-4 oz. Veggies, I measure by volume. -
My insurance required 3 month supervised program. I used that time to read everything I could on all the sleeve forums. I listened to people discuss different Protein powders/RTD and bought those that were most popular. I've copied recipes for each stage post op. I quit drinking with my meals. I find it so much harder to do when I'm at a restaurant. The 3 months has flown by. I now feel like I have a good "arsenal" waiting for me after surgery. lol I will be sleeved next week. Good luck on your journey! It sounds like you are making some great changes now. You will be glad you did.

sleeved on December 31
tinarho replied to cencalmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had to cut my pills at all. I can drink without no pain. Is this normal? I had a protein shake, cream of wheat. chicken broth. 4 sf popcicles, crystal light and water today with no problems. I must be doing ok, right? I'm tempted to try and eat some mashed potatoes. -
Well since last wed when I was sleeved I've been staying at family house in case I needed help. I have basically run out of protein and ice pops. So the last two days Ive had a small cup (about 1/2 cup ) of sugar free Italian ices. Are they really any different than the ice pops? I know the pops have fewer calories but I needed something. This is the first day since my surgery that I am hungry. Tomorrow I'm going home so I have my shakes and ice pops to have. I hope I didn't screw up

The surgery was easy. I went home the same day. By the middle of the following week I started to feel that taking in fluids and protein was a chore. I didn't want to move away from my recliner. That was the first signs of a problem. My reasons for surgery were that I am a diabetic and had an aortic valve replaced in my heart eight years ago. That surgery was tough. The heart valve is a composite material that requires me to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. In preparation for the Lap Band my Dr took me off of the pill form of thinner and had me using an injectable thinner twice a day. The day of surgery all of the surgical team were happy with the INR value of my blood. After surgery the surgeon assisting my Dr came by to discharge me and said that they had a tough time with bleeding. By Thursday of the next week my INR level was coming up but I was not feeling the greatest. That evening I blacked out when trying to get up from my chair. I asked my wife for her auto blood pressure machine only to find that my b/p was 65/45. I called my Dr and he said go to the ER. The paramedic on the ambulance told me that he would try to help me feel better before we went to the hospital by giving me IV fluids. Three liters latter my bp was the same. I was brought to the local hospital given whole blood and transfered to the hospital where the surgery was done. Ten pints of blood, several bags of plasma and many liters of fluids I'm back to making a good recovery. Don't look at this as a minor surgery. This is serious business and please think to ask about what kind of problems can happen to you and be ready.

I go in July 18 & I'm feeling almost every emotion at this point I'm happy, excited, anxious, scared, & super nervous! They didn't really give me much of a pre op diet to follow but, I do have to replace 1 meal a day with whey protein isolate shakes which tastes as if it's something you are NOT supposed to drink YUK I mean it's not impossible to drink but, only because I have to I'm not loving it but, I'm quite sure I will love when I start seeing a difference in how I feel and how I look.....

I was so worried about how the holiday season would go and if I could stick to my goals well I knocked it out of the park and lost 16 pounds between Nov 17th and Dec 26!!! I was in the middle of a move and chaos of traveling and visiting family that I did not always get my protein or water in and exercise was not happening. I am now settled in our new house and am back to eatting regulary and getting in my required protien and water daily and getting back to walking. I am proud of the 85 pounds I have lost over the last 8 months can't wait to get the last 30 off!! Here is to a great 2012 I wish you all the best in your journey!!

Right now your in bandster hell . the stage between your surgery and your first fill. You are going to be hungry . You have to learn to ignore it for a short time. If you do ok w/ 1/2 cup you might want to try to push it a little more ( IF You do not feel like your STUFFED ) and eat little more . You might be doing what i did initially when i got on real food and your stopping yourself before you needed to because you were scared and your actually not getting in enough to eat . As for calories, i would ask your doc , its probably best to stay around that , but check w/ him first. As far as sticking to the plan . The "plan" Is NOT the same NOW as it is when you have restriction . So dont worry about , the band is NOT A diet , its a tool . the best thing you can do is eat Protein protein protein ! Protein is going to keep you full . HTH Mindy

Newbe to gastric bypass world
2goldengirl replied to LJDavenport's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh man, I had a break like that a dozen years ago. I hope it isn't your dominant arm. Heal well! About five months before surgery, I just started out tracking my intake. I use Sparkpeople, some folks prefer Myfitnesspal. My intention was accountability, not weight loss. I also started weighing daily because during parts of my life where I'd been more successful, that was a practice that worked for me. I'd already decaffeinated years ago. Some people use this time to ease off carbonated drinks, caffeine, or trigger foods. It's an excellent time in your life to take a good look inside, and explore whether you're an emotional eater (I wasn't). If you are, start now to develop some self-care techniques so that when emotions come up and you can't use food to soothe yourself, you can still cope. Other people use this time to start moving and changing other habits that get in the way of postop success. This can be a really fruitful time in your life. Oh, and remember that if you're healing a fracture, you actually need a bit more Protein and calories for healing. -
Hi everyone, I've already went through the process of being qualified for gastric sleeve surgery. Unfortunately I broke my humerus near my shoulder, so now it has delayed me in getting my surgery. My question is, I planning on scheduling my pre-op some time in June. So what should I do before hand to prepare myself for a new healthy way of life for myself? I'm some what overwhelmed, not sure what to buy, if I should get my body ready for weeks of liquid diet right now , or wait ? When should I start a journal ? What's the best Protein powder on the market ? Sent from my HTC6500LVW using the BariatricPal App

Questions....questions...questions....
par1959 replied to Saramarie1023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to gulp at day 3. I learned this by accident. Doc says dont worry about it. I watch the after surgery floroscope. The contrasting dye went right through me with a slight delay entering the stomach due to swelling and another slight delay exiting the stomach. Total time less than 2 seconds. According to my doc there are basically two types of patients. There are the ones that liquids go right through which are the majority and then there are those that have problems with liquids the minority. I am still on the anything that can go though a straw post op diet. This also includes yogurt. I usually take my time eating but it only takes me 10 to 15 minutes to down a bowl of soup. I could do it much quicker , but eating slow is one of the new eating behaviors we are suppose to be learning. I have also not felt much of a restriction. I hear that will change once I am on solids. Per my doc I am to consintrate on getting my liquids in and not eat solid food. Protein is not a focus yet. Healing and hydration is what is important in weeks 1 thru 3, possibly 4. Down 28 lbs as of today. Surgery was on 5-28 -
I didn't have a Pre-op diet either. All went well for me. I'm 15 days post-op and am finally feeling better!! What I did instead of a Pre-op diet was try different Protein drinks, shakes, powders. I also stocked up on liquids for the post op phase. Every Dr. Is different as you will see on here. Good luck on your surgery :-)

Just thought I would post these really delicious Protein bars and if anyone else has favourites they recommend please tell us them. I use Protein Bars as a Meal Replacement several times a week if I am on the run or somewhere there is no good food choices to pick from. I only like them if they are really tasty and it satisfies my chocolate craving because they are solid they also keep me feeling full for a long time. My favourite so far is an energy bar called "six star body fuel" that has 15 g of protein. I love the double chocolate chip flavoured one that has a real brownie cake taste. It tastes best when you unwrap it and microwave on high for 10 seconds. It costs about $1.67 at the Real Superstores and at 45 grams it has only 170 calories. My next fave Protein Bar is "PowerBar triple threat", the Chocolate Caramel fusion flavour. It has 225 calories and 10 g of protein and is 53 grams. It sells for about $1.99 each at the Real Superstore. Donna VBG/87 Revised By Dr. Cobourn to Lapband/06 251/164/125 goal

I was wondering when did you start eating raw vegetables. My favorite thing in the whole world is cubed tomato, cucumber, onion, salt pepper and dash of plain yogurt, but I am not sure how long I have to wait... Probably until next local farmers season.. I would chew on anything raw at this point, I am so sick of drinking my meals ( it has been almost 4 weeks - 2 weeks preop and then almost 2 weeks post op... I am losing it in between preparing meals for my toddlers and for my husband.... Ugh, it would be easier if we all could drink Protein shakes and have yell-o for desert... (cue romantic music... I can almost see the whole family skipping and dancing happily on the beach with Protein Shakes in our hands, I don't know, I am just in a desperate need of chewing. Popsicles make me sick and I hate puddings... Roar... Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope....

And go back to liquids anyway. But the protein drinks suck after awhile. Nasty build up in ur mouth. Even after though cleaning. -
Have any of you tried Quinoa? It looks like bird seed..but it's a grain and very high in protein. One of my friends told me about it and it's very yummy! You cook it like you would rice. It's bland tasting but once you add a little flavor to it it's delic! I have it for breakfast every morning with a tiny but of butter and maple syrup!

Struggling to Eat
MsVictorious1020 replied to MsVictorious1020's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm trying to avoid stalls by keeping my calorie and protein intake up. I eat a lot of the same things. I drink about 48 oz a day. I exercise 4-5 times a week cardio. I avoid carbs like the plague. I don't get sick/throw up but eating is such a chore. And I do get nauseous sometimes from the shakes. -
Hi, I haven't tried those. I used to have Perfect Zone bars, but now you can get almost the exact same bars in Target brand Protein bars. They seriously taste good and have lots of protein.
