  1. I don't call myself "keto" although I am not only by virtue of low carb dieting, but also cuz of low calorie diet. I'm in dietary ketosis (aka producing ketones and using ketones/fat for fuel). I have issues with the high fat of the current keto model, so I do a more moderate fat diet. My numbers are more: 30% P, 55% F, 15% C (or for 850cals I get: 64g Protein; 52g Fat; 32g Carbs (total, which nets to around 20g from veg etc). It sure works for me. I also IF to further reduce insulin resistance and assist with fat loss and autophagy.
  2. Perhaps as a precursor, clean out your diet completely. That may be enough to get the ball rolling and ease the transition into Keto. Keto is strict but manageable if you really want to do it. Initially, many people feel withdrawl and flu like symptoms, so be prepared for that. Other than the excess/higher fat consumption and lower protein intake, its strikingly similar to the diet directly after WLS. You can do it! Cheering you on!
  3. Found this when i googled it so it seems once in a while won't hurt but dont make it a habit https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrition/can-you-drink-diet-soda-on-the-keto-diet-the-real-question-is-if-you-should/ar-BBKx7lr Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. My opinion is it is unnecessary. I’d limit sugar and starches but I’d never cut carbs the way keto diets demand. There is nothing wrong with piles of carrots, peas, asparagus, salad, etc... The important thing is to get plenty of protein and limit your calories. I eat vegetables every single day but I also never eat over 2200 calories and I make sure I get 180+ protein.
  5. My question is can I safely do Keto with a bypass and no gall bladder?

I’ve been trying to keep busy so that I’m not aware of my hunger. One saving grace for me was that I did Keto diet since Jan 2 (had to have my pork, greens, and cornbread on the 1st- I am from Georgia afterall!!) Anywho- Keto makes you less hungry. Unfortunately only consuming 900 calories a day counteracts that. Hahaha Overall it was a good visit- but I have two questions so I’m calling Monday. Am I supposed to keep the hospital band they gave me on and the paperwork from the surgeon says I’m supposed to bring a breathing thing they were to give me but I didn’t get one.... questions only for the hospital!! I’ll be around tho- you know I can’t stay away!! Just know when I’m on here I’m prob stuffing my face with either sugar free jello or sugar free popsicles. Hahaha
  7. I have never counted carbs following my sleeve. I associate that with keto/Atkins. I *do* count protein intake and total calories - every day. What I do find is that pasta/rice/potatoes/bread etc. aren't worth eating most of the time (unless I'm WLS masking, in which case I purposely use them to deflect attention). If I can generally eat meals that are protein first, veg second, carbs third then I am usually in the zone and happy. Best of luck OP!
  8. Well said. When I had my first surgery and was finally eating regular foods I focused on carbs and protein and let the fat macros fall where they lay (probably around 40-50g per day, but I did eat a lot of cheese ). The other day I was going through all the books I had related to eating, weight loss, keto, and bariatric surgery and came across the Pound of Cure book by Dr. Weiner (who has great videos on YouTube as well). I know I read some of it, but I'll definitely have to reread it for when I'm past all the post-op stages and into eating regular meals. The problem for me in Japan is that there is a very limited variety of vegetables here, many of which are hard for me to eat due to some gastrointestinal issues I have unrelated to my gastric surgeries, and anything not local tends to be very pricey, so it limits my options. Honestly, when I go to other countries (US, Canada, Europe), I feel like crying when I go to the supermarket and see all the amazing fruits and vegetables available that I just can't get in Japan, or in a limited way because they are so expensive ($3 a peach anyone? $2 for 3 spears of asparagus? $5 for 1/3pint of blueberries?). However, I'm sure I'll be able to figure something out. Note: for everyone who thinks Japanese food is healthy, most of it is carbs+protein, with very few vegetables. If you think of a bento box, half the box is rice, the other 40% tends to be meat or fish, and the remaining 10% is vegetables, usually pickled. A traditional breakfast may have miso soup with tofu (healthy, lots of protein), rice, and fish. Or rice porridge. Many people just eat toast, or maybe eggs. Lunch and/or dinner might be something like curry rice, or fried chicken and rice, or ramen, or whatever. Few to no veggies. When I ask my students how many vegetables they eat per day, the vast majority of them don't eat any, although to be fair, they are university students (this is usually part of a larger discussion of what it means to be healthy - just because people are thin, doesn't mean they are healthy, and vice versa). People doing keto, or who are vegetarian (or worse, vegan, since so many things are made with fish stock) really struggle when travelling here to find enough healthy foods for them to eat.

There is a bariatric recipe group on Facebook but so much of them are "keto" which isn't healthy for me personally (I can't do high fat, I don't handle it well). I do intend to remain low carb so some posts and recipe ideas are helpful. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
  10. One thing I've found that helps bring up protein without adding so many calories is I add protein powder (unflavored) to almost everything including my shredded chicken I made yesterday which has a salsa/broth poured on top of it. I noticed when I did not add the protein powder, I ate a bigger 'helping' of chicken..probably closer to 4+ oz & generally my pouch only tolerates UNDER 4 oz's well....I have no idea why with this food item I can 'stuff more in'. The reason I say it like that is because I was following old/bad habits, eating quickly, not chewing as much..not putting down my fork. This is where I find I need to do WAY more head work. I can tell when I've HIT my restriction, I need to REMEMBER to measure/weigh as when I do NOT hit my restriction, my old 'stinking' way of 'thinking' starts to wonder..."hhmm..can I take another bites?". The question should be DOES my body REQUIRE another bite? So, I realized I had forgotten the protein powder, I went back to adding it tonight & eating MINDFULLY - something I can forget from meal to meal even ONLY 6.5 weeks out! SCARY! I know this is the honeymoon period but short of trying to ensure I get 60+ oz's of protein, I should be doing whatever I can to keep calories LIMITED (this is my own feelings) AND ontinue to try to keep carbs limited. I;m a super SLOW loser & I noticed when early into pureed stages, when I had the ONE and only helping of 'mashed potatoes'...that I was in TROUBLE. Carbs like this are a big trigger food for me and CONVENIENTLY..my 'Ms. Picky Pouch' did not signify it was full when I expected the restriction to 'kick in as normal'. It's like 'she' (my pouch) decided she could fold and flatten the dang potatoes! I decided after that to love myself enough to kick this trigger food to the curb. You will not find a trigger food in my house normally as I had been doing keto WOL for long, long time. I like your idea of smaller plates. I notice when putting my shredded chicken into my regular size 'Dixie bowl', I was constantly hesitating as it 'looked like less'. I must weigh/measure so I KNOW how much it is. I think I will buy the small..well, ppl would call them dessert plates..whatever the smallest size is, and put my food on that instead. Heck, I have saucers I NEVER use..I can use them..lol..what a CONCEPT!
  11. Pre-surgery a modified yes. I'm post menopausal and if I were at ideal weight, I might add more fat just to keep me from losing more...if my pouch could tolerate it. But after surgery, I'm looking forward to the day when I can lower my carbs again to a keto level. I'm eating between 40-60g of net carbs per day--all from low glycemic sources. But hunger has woken up! I do better in a 20-40g net range which is def. keto. I just believe that being keto is a broader range than the narrowly focused 80% fat. From all of my studies, it can be as low as 60% to get your to keto and that is very doable for most of us. No fat bombs. No fat coffee. No artificial stimulation of fat ingestion...just normal eating of food will get your there along with the reduction in carbohydrate. It's where our macros just almost naturally shake out when you drop carbs and eat full fat dairy.
  12. This is a post I can get on board with. (And, for the record, I agree with just about everything you usually post, but the tone of your post from earlier even bothered me a little bit.) Yes, I am only almost 10 months post-op, but I did embrace a keto way of eating for my entire six month pre-op diet program, so I have been eating this way for 16 months now. And my habits are in fact habits and the way I plan to continue eating long-term. Is my approach "extreme"? Not to me, but I can see how others think so. I have watched my dad (2005), mom (2013), and brother (2014) have the bypass, sleeve, and band respectively. My dad and brother have gained back every pound they lost. My mom has gained about 30 pounds. And even they will admit it is because they immediately went back to eating just like they did before. I have watched them do it (even as I have been on my own journey). Can I predict the future? No, I can't. But, I can tell you this -- I am not going back there. If that means 20 carbs a day for the rest of my life, it will just have to mean that. I have made peace with this way of eating, embraced food as fuel, and learned to manage stress in other ways. One guy called me too serious on a thread earlier this week. Some may call me idealistic or extreme. And, in some eyes, maybe that is true, but I'll be damned if I go back to where I began ever again.

    May 2022 surgery?

I had already been doing weight loss diets under my doctor's supervision (I never really intended to get wls, I did keto and thought that would work wonders for me) so when I did everything I could and still didn't have any long term success, my doctor actually suggested surgery. I have BCBS of Illinois so I called them to find out if I have coverage for it and they said yes, so I found a doctor in my network and had my 1st appt on Feb 28th. I had to watch a 4 part video and do a quiz for each part, I had to get lots of bloodwork done, and ecg because the anesthesiologist required it, had to get a clearance letter from my neurologist (I have MS) and my primary doctor. I got those really fast because both were completely on board. I was able to get all of that done really quickly, and honestly I thought the biggest hurdle was going to be my insurance. Everyone was STUNNED that I got my approval, and they got the approval letter, in 48 hours. Nobody expected that at all.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Yay! Same day for my sleeve. Started my pre-op on Nov 22nd. I'm doing my best with my 2 shakes a day but their brand is wearing on me bad. I had to start adding a few drops of water flavoring to them to get them down lol. and Then getting mighty tired of bland chicken and 1 of 5 green veggies a night :(. Had my education class and my per-surgery assessment is on Tuesday and the Wed after its surgery! My surgeons office throws us into keto on the preop and its throwing off my walking bad. But I just keep the thought that I won't have to fight my body any longer.

Dr. Atkins, pioneer of the ketogenic diet

I didn't say he died of a heart attack. I said he had a heart attack that damaged his heart. The attack was caused by endocarditis. He died from slipping on ice and had a blood clot. People in comas often suffer edema build up. Their skin weeps. I've seen it and dealt with patients with this problem. It was NOT unusual for them to gain more than >50lbs. No, she didn't want unscrupulous people attacking his life work. There are so many supportive research and so many doctors who continue this work. You know nothing about what you are accusing. You do not have the facts. Dr. Stephen Finney Dr. Jeff Volek Dr. Mike Eades Dr. Eric Westman Dr. Tim Noakes Dr. Dominic D'Agostino Dr. Richard Feinman Dr. William Davis Dr. Perlmutter https://www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/truth-behind-worlds-most-cutting-edge-fat-burning-performance-meal-plan-keto/ http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2017/03/31/bjsports-2016-097285 I could list other sources for the fail of fat causing heart disease, this is just the first one that came up. But there are MANY more! These are all medical physicians who've authored countless papers and studies in peer reviewed journals--respected physicians who all have helped prove that ketogenic diets ARE beneficial when done correctly. The fat/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was disproved not too long ago.
  16. My homemade cheesecakes are also QUITE low in sugar as we like them to be nice and tart and just put fresh fruit on top. I think if you're trying to eat lower carbs then there are MANY worse "cheats" than a cheesecake, the higher fat and protein to carb content (assuming it's lower sugar of course) make it a much better option than, say, a piece of chocolate cake. If you guys do want to indulge with a cheesecake dessert, it is one of the EASIEST things to make keto. I don't do sugar alcohols though, so mine will also just be .. not AS bad, haha.

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Sick of lockdown/quarantine/shelter in place that's for sure. Been doing nothing but walking around neighborhood or riding bike, quick grocery store trips maybe once a week. Been home since March 13th, orders for California where I live are to continue this until May 3rd. 😭 Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mom's passing and I'm suppose to be with my sister. But no traveling, had to cancel my flights to see her. I physically can't eat more than about 3 1/2 ounces of food which is super helpful because I think I would totally be gaining weight if I could eat more. I've been doing "very well" with my hydration as I track like I'm on crack every ounce of fluid going into my body and usually hitting about 70 ounces. I was on a keto diet prior to doing WLS and have pretty much continued that but more protein then fat diet, but not very many veggies. How do people fit in veggies when protein is your main objective? The struggle is real. Also how to get in so much protein besides drinking it when we have to wait 15-20 minutes before and after eating to drink again and we need so much liquid. It's like there are not enough hours in the day. I know I'm crazy spiraling sorry. As for weight loss, gosh I feel like I should weigh less by now. I mean I exercise regularly and I eat/drink less than 800 calories a day and my active calories per day are anywhere from 800-1200. Total calories burned daily like 3000-4600. The math just doesn't seem to add up to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I miss hugs 🤗 I am an extrovert and this being cooped up is killing me.

You don't have to be keto girlfriend! Nor that restrictive. Just maybe think about for now filling your tum with super FILLING high fiber stuff that isn't calorically dense nor sweet/a bunch of high glycemic carbs that break down to sugar. (i.e. More salads - lots of them! Instead of oatmeal, do a chocolate chia and hemp heart warm pudding with some blueberries (frozen) on them, only 1/2ounce and a dollop of vanilla Greek yogurt, plain sweetened with a drop or two of stevia.) Those sorts of swaps. Right? Instead of popcorn, do pork rinds and a yogurt Ranch dip or yogurt onion dip...that sort of thign.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Friday, Jan. 10 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 115.4 lbs ---------------------------------------- Purposefully ate little during the day as we had planned to go out for dinner at one of my fave french restaurants. Sadly, for various unremarkable reasons, we ended up at an Italian restaurant, which was ok, but I was looking forward to something else, so it was kinda a letdown. I ended up drinking more than I ate. Stopped for a little ice cream on the way home and rewarded with a gurgly stomach for an hour or so. ---------------------------------------- 9:00am - 1/2 black coffee w/ stevia 12:00pm - Salted Caramel Coffee/Tea Latte (leftover coffee + green tea bag + almond milk + sugar free salted caramel syrup) 1:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + cucumber + carrots + 1 oz apple + shirataki noodles + 2 fl oz homemade meat sauce 5:30pm to 9:00pm - 1 coconut amaretto sour (YUM!!!) 3 glasses red wine 1 gin & soda water 2 tbsp spinach & artichoke dip w/ 5 KETO bagel chips (I had some in my purse, lol, I brought them cuz I planned on ordering foie gras at the french restaurant...) ~1 oz fresh mozzarella w/ hazelnut balsamic glaze (barely) 1/4 cup spinach salad w/ pickled beets, goat cheese, pear, toasted almonds, lemon honey dressing 1 bite of grilled salmon (~ 1/2 oz) 1/4 cup salted almond marzipan ice cream 11:00pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 1 oz apple + 1 fl oz pumpkin seeds + 1 oz cashews + 1 oz white cheddar + 1 slice proscuitto ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1909 cals - 60g Protein - 128g NET carbs - 91g fat
  21. I was sleeveed Nov. 23rd, which was a revision from Lapband that was removed in July. I did great drinking post surgery and then mushy foods. I have lost 17 pounds but have been in a stall for a week and a half. With the lap band, I had a lot of regurgitation due to a slipped band. Now with the sleeve, I will eat small portions of meat, I am usually hungry, so I am thinking I am eating quicker than I should, I have been chewing thoroughly or so I thought, but usually 10-15 minutes later, I have the need to throw-up as if I ate too much, and it does come up. How do you know when you are full and how long are you taking to eat cut up meat? I am not on normal foods and slowly and trying to add in. I noticed I am not getting in all of my liquids since adding back in some normal foods as it takes about an hour + before I can start drinking again. How do you differentiate b/w head hunger and actual hunger? I know these are newbie questions, but I think the lapband created this PTSD with the vomiting, lol. I am going to start logging my food and was thinking of trying the KETO diet too. Any thoughts, tips, recommendations would be appreciated!
  22. Okay so broke my fast with this wonderful soup. https://www.galonamission.com/slow-cooker-low-carb-zuppa-toscana-soup-keto-friendly/ For extra protein, we subbed beef bone broth instead of plain broth and I also added in an extra 1/2 scoop of the bone broth powder to pack in 22 gm protein in my 1 cup serving. I can do soups as long as I slurp the liquid, then wait a few minutes and eat the solids. There were no leftovers.

Yesterday, Thu, Nov. 28 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 113.4 lbs It it just me, or can anyone else predict when they are going to see a gain or loss before getting on the scale? Further, the majority of the time I am eerily scary of knowing beforehand what my actual weight will be (with a margin of error of 1-2oz). For the past two mornings, I got it exactly right.
