4+ years out for me. i still track all my calories and weigh myself every morning. if my scale shows an upward trend for an extended period of time, i make adjustments in calorie intake for a while....though i haven't had to do these "adjustments" since i upped my personal acceptable weight limit by 5lbs over a year ago. i found that the effort to maintain a lower weight was just not worth it. yes its a small amount, but not having to worry about those extra 5 lbs and being able to maintain my current weight with little extra effort with my current eating habits and activity level is golden to me. p.s. i do dedicated exercise about 3-4 times a week p.p.s. not sure if it's worth noting that i also inadvertently practice 16:8 IF (i don't normally eat until after noon out of years habit; and i generally stop eating around 7-8 so i sleep on an empty stomach..habit created after wls to avoid nighttime regurgitation.)

I'm having revision surgery on 12/29 and started pre-op diet on the 15th. I had my VSG surgery in Mexico in 2016 and wasn't nervous at all. After gaining over 100 pounds back (thank you Covid isolation and depression) I decided to explore the conversion which was the surgery originally advised for me but my insurance wouldn't pay for it. I'm really nervous this time and I'm having surgery close to home. Also feeling super emotional about it and trying not to keep internally beating myself up for feeling like I failed! I struggle with the protein drinks so I've been buying the high protein yogurts and I found a zero calorie gatorade with added protein that they did a good job hiding the whey aftertaste. It's not as high in protein as a shake but I figure If I'm getting it in that's what matters -
basically, the closer you get to a normal BMI, the slower the weight will come off. I lost 16 lbs the first month, c. 10 lbs (give or take) until I was about six or seven months out, then it dropped down to maybe 5-8 lbs a month, then after the first year, it was less than five lbs a month - sometimes just 2 or 3 lbs. it's because the lighter you are, the fewer calories you need. When I weighed over 300 lbs, I was probably eating over 3000 kcal/day. When you're eating that much, you can cut 1000 - or 1500 - or even 2000 calories a day, meaning you're going to drop weight pretty quickly. I'm trying to lose 10 lbs right now. My maintenance level is about 1600 kcal/day. Cutting even 1000 calories is unadvisable. That would put me at 600 kcal/day. if one were to eat 600 kcal/day for more than a couple of occasional days, they'd need to be under medical supervision. And cutting 1500-2000 calories from my daily intake when I normally eat 1600? Ha. Impossible. I can cut 200-300 calories safely. That translates to very slow weight loss - about 1/2 a pound a week. anyway, long way of saying, yes - your weight loss will slow down the further out you go.

At 5yrs out, I still mostly choose meals with lower calories when eating at restaurants even if I want the higher calorie meal more. Having calories displayed on menus is a game changer for me. Also I rarely have drinks with calories and when I do they are usually 60 calories or under and once per day. -
I had the Loop DS, but my stomach is a VSG stomach, if that counts? And, I'll be 3 years post op next month so I don't know if I count, but... my tip is to take the weight loss phase and use it to learn how to eat in a better and more sustainable way. Make healthier choices, but allow yourself the freedom to eat the things you want in moderation (i.e not all the time). If you start to put on weight then monitor your calories (though in year 2 you WILL put on anywhere between 5-20 pounds back on average, or so I've been told by my surgeons office. I originally put 21 pounds on due to a med I was taking and once I stopped taking the med I worked on getting the weight off and was able to lose half the weight I'd gained, but I can't get under 186 pounds no matter what I do. I'm okay with it though as long as I stay in the 180's, but if my weight creeps into the 190's I start monitoring my calories closely to see if I'm eating too much. Which I usually am lol. I cut back and the weight comes back off, but stalls once again at 186 😒).

After a few weeks after surgery my body was so fatigued from limited calories. So once your body doesn't have a reserve, rest and take care of yourself with little walks a day. This lasted about 2 weeks, until I got to soft foods and had was eating 1/2 cup meals. I almost left my grocery cart. Twice. As I was so exhausted and just wanted to go home. -

I loved the puree stage after 2 weeks before and after surgery of chicken broth... pureed foods added seasonings, spices. I did turkey chili, Jimmy Dean egg frattata with bacon, meatloaf with catsup added. Baby food turkey sweet potato with a pinch of taco seasoning, chicken curry salad. After 3 weeks puree it was great to get to soft foods. Just got to regular food and nervous. Going to get set up on Fitness app to track calories, water and protein. Eating 1/3 cup meat, 1/8 cup veggie or carb. 3x day, 2 snacks of same but with no carb, one of fruit. -

I'm with you! I had to ask my nutritionist if I should quit exercising since it is less than 700 calories a day of mostly protein. I was definitely fatigued and experiencing headaches the first few days but it does seem to get better. I found my rate of loss just got slower. & slower. There wasn’t a sudden change. It goes hand in hand with you slowly increasing your calorie intake as your portion sizes get larger & you’re eating a wider variety of foods which you should be doing. Plus every week you have less to lose. The hair loss is temporary & only lasts about three months. Small cost to pay for the weight loss. The thing to watch is complacency in your food choices & activity. It can be easy to let a treat become a more regular addition to your diet, to add extra snacks, larger portions etc., not tracking & measuring as carefully or regularly. Boredom & diet fatigue are real. But stick to your plan, recommendations from your dietician & the new habits & behaviours you’ve been establishing.

There is no difference to me between the two as far as what I can eat. I can eat everything too. I don't dump, I don't have any side affects, and I don't have the bathroom problems or side effects. The major difference is no gerd, and a little more control in calorie intake. Post-op was a lot easier after the RNY vs VSG. Some people think it is such a drastic difference between vsg and rny when it comes to diet but it's basically the same. -

Hello and welcome in this forum. I weighed in, heavier than you. I lost 15lbs during my 3 week pre op. Then 27lbs in the first month. So you seem on track to me. What kind of foods are you eating and are you tracking your proteins and calories ? Everyone has a different weight loss journey and its not a great idea to compare with others. Medications, age, height and medical issues are different with each person. This leads to different weight loss. Also how much you can walk or exercise can benefit weight loss. -
No, she's a professional trainer, and I asked her to help me come up with some new ways to strengthen and tone my body, burn fat and calories, and ward off the boredom of doing the same stuff over and over. I've never worked with a trainer before, and she's doing this for me for free. I'm very fortunate and grateful for her help.

Airfried hamachi kama (yellowtail collar), after rinsing I salted it with Himalayan pink salt. The dip was a citrus, soy sauce, ginger mixture. I thought I was famished but I got full after the first few bites (what a let down). 11:00 am is far too early for me to eat anything. I usually eat about 2 pm. So I gave most of the delicious meat to the cats. They enjoyed it lol. Although I only ate a few bites, I counted the full hamachi calories (165 cal). It's so low in calories anyway. I also ate ounce of steamed rice (37 cal). For snacks today, I will get my veggies and fruits in. -

I just started yet another stall. Each one lasts longer than the last, and my last one was 4 weeks long. So I'm just settling in for the loooong miserable wait to get out of it. Last time I was in it, my nutritionist recommended adding weight training and switching up my calories (1200-1300 on working out days and 900-1000 on non working out days). I added weight training 2 days per week and eventually upped it to 3 days per week. I also reached out to my cousin (she's a professional trainer in AZ) and she gave me some tips for cardio to build up strength and switch up what I do. I ended up losing 13 pounds in 2 weeks doing that. Aaaaand...now my body is freaking out about the large amount of weight loss and I'm in a stall again.

I feel your pain! I seems to hit long plateaus and they are frustrating. I saw that although the scale wasn’t moving in those weeks - my body was changing, clothes were still getting smaller, skin was firming or readjusting - so that was nice to see! I noticed my calories and protein were on the low side because I’m struggling with amounts I can eat but when I can bump those calories and protein up some, I would notice a loss. Keep up the good work! We can do this!! :)

i stopped keeping track after the 2nd month lol. It drove me nuts when i would cook and add things and trying to figure out calories and carbs and such. i was like F that lol

Yeah, I have heard that before too. Right now I eat per my plan, about 1000 calories a day but sometimes as much as 1200.

My one pointer given by my nutritionist recently was to "eat more" lol. I was like WTF? and she was like if you eat less you can gain weight. she went on and on explaining it but i forgot haha. basically make sure you are on a stable diet getting around the same calories everyday

The first few months post-op are the hardest because you’re still healing from surgery and adjusting to a lot of changes, but you’re not yet getting the benefits of the weight loss. It’s very normal at this stage to have feelings of regret and wonder if the surgery was a mistake. As time goes by, though, it gets easier in many ways. You’ll be able to re-introduce more foods into your diet as well as get used to the changes that will become your new “normal.” And in the meantime, you’ll lose a lot of weight and get to experience life as a non-obese person. This rough part of your journey will be a blip in your memory, and if you’re like most of us, eventually your only regret will be that you didn’t do this sooner. I’m 2.5 years out from gastric bypass and I can eat pretty much normally. I still avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat, and bread, pasta, and rice, but I tolerate most foods and I eat pretty normal-sized portions. In fact, it scares me sometimes to see how much volume I can eat, and I have to be pretty careful to eat low-calorie foods. Sometimes I kind of miss the early post-op days when I could only eat a few bites at a time and was never hungry. Although it’s not fun, take advantage of this time because it will never be easier to lose weight than it is right now.

Yes it does get way better & easier. Because we’re different & we heal & recover in our own time, there’s no real definitive time frame when this will happen for you. Your tummy becomes less sensitive & fussy, the sensitivity you may develop for certain tastes & smells goes, you feel more comfortable & confident about what you can eat, you can eat more & a wider variety of foods. And one day you’ll look back & go yep, I’ve come a long way from those first couple of weeks. In the meantime keep eating small bites slowly. Remember too the restricted diet & staged return to eating specific foods is to support & not stress your healing tummy. I wasn’t able or interested in eating much either. I ate from a teaspoon & each bite was barely 1/2 a teaspoon. I wasn’t eating 300 calories those first months & barely ate 900 at 6 months. Started with eating only 1/4 to 1/3 cup from purée. Got to almost a cup at 6 months. You will slowly but surely be able to eat more too. Try some anti nausea meds to help with your nausea. Most are prescribed them initially. Ask for some or try some over the counter ones & see if they help. I had varying degrees of nausea in the morning for 8 months. It stopped when I stopped taking my multi vitamins (didn’t need them) - they’re often the culprit especially iron. -

I can assure you, there is no deadline. Eat less calories than your body needs and you're going to lose weight, even years out. I recently lost about 2 kg because we had a stressful time at work and I ate less than I usually do. It's likely that I'm going to gain that back when things will be a bit slower again but for me it's proof that I can lose weight by eating less even several years out, be it intentional or not.. -

Update & NSV: Friday was my 4 month follow up. I weighed in at 47 pounds down from surgery and 97 pounds lost total. My clothes are getting pretty big on me but I’m trying to modify my clothes rather than buy new for as long as possible. I was helping at a school event and one of the other volunteers came up to me (who hasn’t seen me since last April) - gushing over how good I looked … saying “I almost didn’t recognize you”. I have had several people tell me that lately (many saying it’s was due to my shorter hair, I think they were embarrassed or unsure how to mention my weight-loss). Funny thing is because my loss has been gradual my family and I don’t really “see” it as much - so when people react to it, usually it’s sweet. I’m struggling getting enough calories and protein because I have some sinus drainage that make eating difficult but otherwise my dr and nutritionist think I’m on a really good track and are encouraging me to keep up the good work. I would have like to have lost more by now, but one advantage to slower loss is my skin is looking pretty good in general. I still have a lot to loose. I don’t have an ideal number set in my mind. I’ve already met all of my health related goals. In my perfect world getting down to the 100’s would be great, but as long as I’m healthy and avoid regaining… I’m happy. Having lots of plateaus which can be frustrating but with my calories being low that’s kinda expected.
