Well, I have had my stomach scoped and the doc found some erosion. He advised me to stop taking my daily aspirin as he suspects that is the culprit. I also had an IVC installed through my neck. Anybody else had this problem with aspirin? So now I have a surgery date of October 3rd. Two weeks of liquids prior to that. I started this deal on March 31 so it will be about 6 months from beginning to surgery. I guess that is not too bad. I also have a cyst in my neck I need to have removed prior to the end of the year so I won't have to pay a new deductible off to get it done. Already had two cataract surgeries and a colonoscopy done. I have been at the hospital way too much this year!

R Hernandez posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

I know that I need this badly to improve my ife, I am resigned to t. I have never had surgery before so I am nervous about all of theunknowns. At the beginning of this process, I was very excited (still am), and its been a long year. I am on clear liquids, everything is going as planned, but still Im so nervous I cant stand it. -

What To Do? Should I Bug My Insurance Company About Approval For Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
dominique replied to Mynewlife2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor's office told me it would take 2 weeks to get an answer. But I needed to schedule my surgery during the December holiday break because I work at a school, So after 4 days I called my insurance company. They said the paperwork should have been submitted to my medical group not to them. So I called the doctor's office and asked for the medical group's phone number. They put me on hold for a while. Then they came back and gave me the number. I called the medical group and they looked through the faxes. They said they got the request that day. I think the doctor's office kept me on hold while they faxed it over. I asked how long it would be until a determination was made. The said 2 days. Hmmm. So had I not called, the request might have sat in my doctor's office a couple more days. Now, I was in a hurry, so I pushed it. But I'm glad it did. I am scheduled for 12-19-11. -
7 Pounds Lost In A Week With Liquid Pre Surgery Lap Band Diet
khughes330 replied to jennilamb007's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started Tuesday and have lost 10 lbs. It was hard the first two days, but easier now. 9 more days! -
My surgery is tomorrow( today- it's 1:12am) as well. I can not sleep at all! Nervous is not exactly the word to describe how I am feeling at the moment. I laid down at 10:20p and could not sleep at all. So I got up and moved to the sofa in media room and will probably stay here until 5:15 am before I start getting ready to leave for hospital. Good luck to everyone having surgery later today! I will see you on the other side. :-)

I had my surgery Tuesday August 6th at 1:30. Well my surgeon was late so I didn't get in to surgery till almost 5. I don't remember anything after bing wheeled into the O R, I remember all the nurses after trying to take care of me. But mostly sleeping till Wednesday morning. My nurse was trying to get me to drink my liquids. And I was trying but everything I took in I threw up and then some. They had to give me everything by I.V. I couldn't keep ANYTHING down. The surgeon came in later on Wednesday and told me that I was probably all swollen. And my saliva was filling my pouch. And anything else I put in was overflowing it. So for the rest of Wednesday I took nothing by mouth. Then Thursday I was scared to try to swallow anything but I took a couple of spoons of broth and sips of water and it stayed down. But I wasn't taking as much as they wanted so the kept me for another day. I had no other pain. None of my incisions were painful and I had no gas pains at all. I was up everyday walking all over the hospital. Didn't have pain when i got up or sat down. My nurse came in and took out my staples on friday afternoon, i had 19 all together. Put some sterile strips on them and dr prescribed me my meds and now i am home and doing just fine.

Scared and worried about the first month post op
meggiep replied to imawhodat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally understand- and I am in the middle of it on day 10. Know every day gets a little better- I can drink so much more easily now that those first few days and every little discomfort is worth it because of the mystifying way that my body, a slow loser always in the past, has somehow lost lost 25 pounds since I started the pre-op diet. I do think this is a hard, time, I wont sugar coat that- and I encourage you to have a nice long time with no stresses and the ability to kick back and be good to yourself. But this is the best thing I have done for myself along with the Water aerobics habit i can't wait t get back to. -

Everyone will lose weight at a different rate depending on a slew of issues age, sex, health, dna etc. you're doing fantastic. My surgery was 10/15 and I'm down 36lbs. Seems small to me but that's 36lbs in 10 weeks! You are just at 8 weeks that's amazing. Take in every success, last year I would have been up in weight from the holidays. I celebrate the loss! -

Cost-Effectiveness and Budget Impact of Obesity Surgery in Patients With Type-2 Diabetes in Three European Countries JournalObesity Surgery PublisherSpringer New York ISSN0960-8923 (Print) 1708-0428 (Online) IssueVolume 16, Number 11 / November, 2006 DOI10.1381/096089206778870067 Pages1488-1503 Subject CollectionMedicine SpringerLink DateTuesday, June 26, 2007 Add to marked items Add to shopping cart Add to saved items Permissions & Reprints Recommend this article Roger Ackroyd1, Jean Mouiel2, Jean-Marc Chevallier3 and Frederic Daoud4 (1) Royal Hallamshire Hospital, General Surgery, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom (2) University of Nice, Obesity Center, Nice, France (3) Hôpital Européen Georges-Pompidou, General Digestive Surgery, Paris, France (4) Medalliance, Paris, France Published online: 01 November 2006 Background: We aimed to establish a payer-perspective cost-effectiveness and budget impact (BI) model of adjustable gastric banding (AGB) and gastric bypass (GBP) vs conventional treatment (CT) in patients with BMI ≥35 kg/m2 and type-2 diabetes T2DM, in Germany, UK and France. Methods: Clinical evidence was obtained from literature and patient-reported EQ-5D scores given BMI and T2DM status from HODaR. Resource utilization data in AGB, GBP and CT were obtained from quoted publications so as to reflect practice in 2005. CT in each country was based on descriptions in HTA reports or based on co-authors' experience of current practice. Unit costs were obtained from published sources when available, or from co-authors' institutions. A deterministic algorithm with cost and utility discounting, enabled selection of inputs independently throughout the time scope for each of the 3 treatments, and included mean BMI, amounts of resources and unit costs. Results: The base case time-scope was 5 years, and the annual discount rate for utilities and costs was 3.5%. Compared to CT, GBP yielded +80.8 kg/m2.years, +2.6 T2DM-free-years and +1.34 QALYs. AGB yielded +57.8 kg/m2.years, +2.5 T2DM-free-years and +1.03 QALYs. In Germany and France, both GBP and AGB yielded a cost decrease, and were thus dominant in terms of ICER compared to CT. In the UK, GBP and AGB yielded a cost increase, but were cost-effective. Conclusion: In patients with T2DM and BMI ≥35 kg/m2, AGB and GBP are effective at 5-year follow-up in cost-saving in Germany and France, and are cost-effective in the UK with a moderate BI vs CT.

Lap Band for a BMI of Less than 35?
honk replied to TexasLady1986's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
While you weigh a lot less then I ever did at your highest, I can relate to what you've said. At 13, 18, 30 I lost significant amounts of weight up to and including 100 pounds. I gained it back every time. I was super committed to watching my diet and lots of exercise. Problem was that I had to be so stringent it was not sustainable. In fact at 18 I was probably slightly anorexic. I also have a family whose female members were obese but who obsessed about my weight. The band will not make you thin. YOU will still need to exercise (I do an hour daily), and watch what you eat. But once you get to restriction it will help you eat less. Personally I don't keep my band so tight that I get complications that others get. I read on this board that people know they are too tight, can't eat 3 oz of solid Protein (so they drink Protein shakes for nutritian) but won't loosen the band. They are loosing weight quickly so they don't want to slow things down. This is the wrong mentality! If you keep your band at a good level your likelyhood of having problems (trouble getting food to go down) will be greatly reduced. Also keeping the band too tight can lead to having the band slip, which is a major complication. Do I wish I'd had lap band sugery 10 years ago at 30 and could have kept the weight off. Yes. -

Hi Zoelifechick, I have Dr. Halmi too. I went into Potomac on July 19th and was discharged on the 21st. First two days were Pure D MISERY but today is a new day and I'm feeling a little more normal every day. Today I went out for a nice long walk. I did make one HUGE MISTAKE. They send you home with what I call a narcotic ball. You have a bag with a plastic ball filled with pain medicine with the tubes running from the bag thru the tubes and steadily into your belly. Well the directions were to wait untill the ball deflates then slowly pull out the tubes which should be in a couple of days. I didn't realize there's two layers to the ball so when the outer layer was completely deflated I pulled out the tubes (don't worry that part doesn't hurt). My curious 16 year old inspected the ball , stabbed it with a knife and a large amount of pain medication was in the center of the ball. There had to be at least 2-3 more days of pain meds in that ball. You can't put the tubes back in once you've pulled them out. Needless to say after about 10 hours the pain monster kicked my butt. Fortunately they send you home with a precription for liquid hydrocodone so the pain monster subsided and all is well. Lesson: DON'T PULL OUT THE STOMACH TUBES UNTIL THE WHOLE BAG IS COMPLETELY DEFLATED!!!!!! On a good note Dr. Halmi was fantastic, I also recieved visits from Dr. Nain, The P.A. Amia, and the other P.A. Renaldo. The repaired my hiatal hernia, removed the lapband and revised it with the Gastric Sleeve. From the 19th to today I'm 14 pounds down. I'm not getting too happy because most of that was from the liquids completely emptying my colon. Now all the pounds from this day forward will be fat . Good Luck Zoelifechick, you have a great Bariatric team. Keep me posted. -

I too have BCBS and my file was submitted on 8/5/11 and I called on 8/10 no update, called again on 8/11 no update but then on 8/12/11 there was an update--more information needed (which actually was in the file). I faxed the additional info and my surgeon's office also faxed the additional info so now I am in the waiting game again. I called today for an update nothing, but I will be calling again tomorrow. Good luck for a speedy approval! -

Surgery in two days and I'm in tears
sarsar replied to imawhodat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your feelings are totally normal! You can do this! When I got home from surgery I thought I would never be able to get through the first 30 days. I had 10 days clears, 10 days full liquids and 10 days soft foods (which is where I am now). Guess what, the time has flown by! I have 7 more days of soft foods and I can't believe it went so fast! For me the head hunger is the worst part of it. I know others don't have this but I do. I figured I probably would bf I had the surgery so I knew I just have to deal with it. It is getting better! I know I will eventually be able to have all of the things I love so it's not too bad. Also, I was one of the lucky ones that didn't have any nausea after surgery so you may be just as lucky. I still haven't had any. When I try something new I take a tiny sip or bite and see how it sits in my sleeve bf I take more. If it doesn't feel right I don't eat anymore and will try that food/drink again later on! Hang in there and keep us posted on how you are after surgery! -
Had My Lap Band Surgery Yesterday!
healthychange posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay, so I know that technically this belongs in the post-surgery section, but I wanted to share a little about what it was like with the pre-lapband readers because I found this forum so helpful when I was pre. Guess what - I'm feeling great! My surgery was at 7 am yesterday morning and my husband and I were back at the hotel by 9:30 am (we live in another state form the surgeon I chose.) Everything went extremely smoothly. I felt good when wegot back to the hotel, but very groggy, and in a little bit of pain. I took the pain meds and slept till about 1:30. Then we went out for a walk. The doc wanted me to walk 10 minutes, 4 times a day, starting right away. I went with my husband to get lunch and had about half a cup of turkey broth. I ordered turkey Soup and asked the waitress to just give me the broth from the top and leave out all the noodles and chunks and she happily did so. My husband had a steak sandwich and it didn't bother me at all to see him eat it. The rest of the day we watched Tv, read, and went on the little walks. Today was a tiny bit rougher - more pain, especially in my left shoulder and the port site. But nothing unbearable and I actually enjoyed some outlet shopping and got a cute new bag! This evening I am pretty sore again and the doc told me to expect that the second day would be worse than the first day after surgery. My husband and I fly home late tomorrow evening and I couldn't be happier. To anyone in the Seattle area still looking for a surgeon: I totally recommend Pacific Weight Loss Surgery. Good luck all you pre-bandsters! -
Here is a current pic of me, taken at Disney...
piercedqt78 replied to piercedqt78's topic in The Lounge
I was activly updating my avatar as the messages were posted. Disney is my second home, we try to go twice a year. When our plane lands in Orlando my heart is racing and I am giddy like a kid at Christmas time. I grew up in Jacksonville Beach so Florida is really my home. We spent 10 glorious days in the sun and I am already planning our Oct trip. I am either in Disney or planning to be there. It was nice to be there and feel like I was thin enough to take pictures and not be ashamed. I was a very good girl, I made sure to get in my water and as much protein as I could each day. I fell in love with the rotissery chicken kids meals and the dessert was sugar-free applesauce. I had that and a splenda sweetned tea just about everyday. I managed to maintain my weight while there, that is a first for me ever. I actually lost 3 inches at my waist and around my thighs, I think I walked off those inches. I am hoping that my pictures of me smiling and living life will inspire, new and hopeful bandsters. ~Mandy -
