  1. Before I spend alot of money on a mix, I am looking for some brand/flavor recommendations. Someone recommended Gold Standard that he got from GNC. I am thinking of sticking with vanilla so I can add other items to it.. I think chocolate might be too fake tasting and I would get sick of it after a while.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

i buy mine at cvs,i get the chocolate flavored and its only 14.99

  2. From North Jersey as well. Being banded in May. Dr. Strom is my surgeon out of Mountainside Hospital. I had a friend that went to him. Wish I could get banded sooner, but have to do the 6 months of nutrition visits.

dr srom is a excellent doctor,he was going to do my surgery, but another member of his team(dr.reich)did my surgery.you will be in good hands

  5. Any other January bandsters have their first fill yet? I'm nervous about tomorrow and hope it won't be a difficult process. I have the embarrassing situation that I didn't even know where my port was...I thought it was in one spot but when I went for my 2nd nutritional session, the dietician said usually they are in a different spot and when I started feeling around I realized she was right! Oops! Anyway, would love to have some of you to share the experience with so let me know when you are getting your fills. :)

    Julie

hi julie, i wont have my first fill until the 28th,i am a little nervous, but it cant be all that bad

  6. Hello all, I'm new to this board and I wanted to tell you all there is a VERY active boeard called Obesity Help.com. They have forums for just LAP-BAND, just New Jersey also,,but it is a VERY active board. I also read on here that some are not aware of The Barriatric Center At SOCH. Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin New Jersey.I am to be banded on May 22nd by Dr. Jonathan Reich, he has been trained at the Cleveland Clinic and has done this surgery for years up North. He and two other surgeons saw a need in south Jersey and there certainly was!! He and his staff are wonderfull, Very compassionate and professional. I have spoken with his patients who have had the surgery by him on the other boards and they give him glowing reports. There is a support group meeting on Wed, the 11th of Feb. in the conferance room in the main hospital. If you can not make that one , i'm sure if you call SOCH they will gladly give you other dates. Just wanted you to know we now have a friend in South Jersey.. Good Luck to all of you..:cursing:

dr.reich did my surgery on jan 20th 11

  7. Hi, I am scheduled for imy initial appt with Dr. strom on 9/18, me and my partner. Dr. Strom performed the Gastric bypass on my best friend and since March 08 she has lost 100 lbs! dr.strom was originally going to do the surgery, but another member of his team did it.you picked a wonderful group of docs.good luck to you!

  8. Hello,

My name is Vicki. I just got the band 2 days ago. I checked this board right before my surgery but didn't see anyone sign up for January 2011. I'm guessing there are more out there than just me or perhaps you can guide me to the right place to get in touch with other "newbies". There are no support groups anywhere near where I live so am pretty dependant on the online stuff. Looking forward to hearing from others.

    Thanks,

    Vicki

hi vicki,i was banded on january, 20th.i am down 19lbs

  11. To be truthful I would be less worried about your pouch stretching than I would be about the stiches in your stomach holding the the band in place. I'm not trying to be an alarmist. I just want to remind you that eating solids makes your stomach churn which can stress those stiches. Depending on where you are in the diet. Even if you had moved to mushies I would probably return to full liquids for a day to let your stomach rest.

    thanks for the info

  13. hi melissa,i have bipolar disorder as well,i also gained 100lbs as a result of my meds, but i got to a point where i forced myself not to pig out at nite.with a little will power you can say no more.i am only 3 weeks out and am doing fine.good luck to you

    Hi Melissa!

I have depression... no bipolar, no mood swings... but I've been dealing with the condition and the meds for 12 years now (started out as post partum depression).... I, too, have gained 100# over the last 12 years.... undoubtedly, somewhat related to meds.

Incidentally, I've had a few "panic" episodes in the last few years... typically related to starting new meds.

I was authorized... and scheduled for the procedure over a year ago.... and did tons of soul searching to psyche myself into it.

That being said, I was just banded last week.

My first morning home... when it was time to take all my morning meds... and I was fretting about getting them all down... (I used to take up to 10 at a time).... I had a little 'episode'... racing thoughts, rapid pulse, short of breath, dizzy.... but being that my husband lives and works in Japan (and I'm alone with my 12 and 10 year old sons)... I put myself in a time out and 'went to a happy place'...eventually, I came out of it (I have NO anxiety meds ordered... yet) !! The few days since are getting better, slowly, but surely.

There are a couple of points I'm trying to make: 1. You don't get banded overnight... 6 months to a year is typical time to 'jump through all the hoops' of getting authorized. 2. You have plenty of time to meet with your psych provider(s) and discuss possible 'worst case scenarios'... and how you would respond to them...

I also thought about ALL those delish foods that I probably won't be enjoying any more (at least not indulging in)... Well, those images got flushed when my 4 year old niece told me, "MOVE... BIG FAT LADY".... out of the mouth of a babe... THAT was my final straw... I HAD to do this for ME... I want to see my kids grow up (and be healthy enough to enjoy it)!!!

This afternoon, I was regretting it when I almost tossed my Tomato Soup.< /em>

This evening, I'm back to being happy.

Give yourself credit where credit is due; however, be realistic in knowing (and acknowledging) your emotional limitations.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!;)

  14. Hello.

My name is Melissa and I am a 34 year old mother of one. Six years ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and since being medicated for it, I have gained about 100 lbs. I have recently started doing research on the Lap Band surgery, and I am going to talk to my dr about it to see if it is a good choice for me.

Right now, I don't have any insurance, but my husband just changed jobs so he should be getting insurance for us both in a few months. I can't wait until he gets it so I can call them and see if they would cover, or even partially cover the procedure.

I'm worried about the bipolar disorder though. Not so much the moods, which I know I need to be concerned with, but more if the medicines will just make me gain the weight again.

I'm also concerned about eating after the fact. I know it's terrible, but I'm already imagining craving foods, and I wonder if I'll ever be able to eat the foods that I sometimes indulge in now.

I understand the process is different for everyone, and I can't really ask about the surgery because of the differences each of us will have. So I won't ask about the actual procedure, but if you feel like sharing your experience, I'd love to hear it all.

I'll stop blabbing for now, but please, anyone feel free to share your experiences, insurance issues, etc.

    Thanks!

    Melissa

hi mellisa,i too have bipolar disorder and gained 100lbs from the seroquel that i take.eventually i had stopped all the pigging out at nite, thats when i decided to get the lap band.most pshycs wont ok the band if your bipolar.i just happened to go to another doc and did not mention the bipolar and got okd.the choice is yours but i would wait untill your hunger leveled out before making a final decision

  15. Hi this is my first time on a blog. I was banded on the 24th January 2011 and am feeling ok. have done heaps of research prior to deciding to undergo the lap band but now that i am in the process of it i find it really overwhelming. I didnt have to do anything pre op just eat as normal. i had chicken noodle Soup and ate the noodles (i am in the liquid phase for 14days) and find that i have pain in my left side/chest. the rule i was given if it can go up a straw you can have it. (the noodles were the thin little ones) and now im worried that i have something stuck or am i just over reacting? i have basically been having up and go's and soup for the last 5 days. i am climbing the walls wanting something with some texture. if anyone has any other ideas about what i can eat for the next week whilst still on the liquid phase i would be grateful. do you think i went too far with eating the noodles? i als treated myself to some takeaway chinese chicken and corn soup i didnt eat the chicken but the corn was eaten :( now i feel really stupid and angry that i may have stuffed this whole thing up so soon.

wow girl, your really pushing it,first of all no solid food the first week, espesially corn,Pasta is a big no no no matter how small the Pasta is,no offense but i think you nedd to rethink your diet, talk to your nut
