Before you have surgery- read this-warning

I haven't experienced any kind of "hell" either and I'm coming up to my 2nd bandiversary in a few months. And, I even had a slight slip at one point, even that wasn't hell, inconvienient, yes, but hell, no. I've eaten normal food all the way through my journey and I've exercised my butt off, literally. I've gone without nothing in the way of food. I just eat smaller portions now. I have exercise to thank for being able to continue normal eating habits.

Oh man. So the only way I get to be a sucess story is to do only liquids? Are we STILL on that bandwagon?.....who is this person's Doctor? My Doc would slap me over the head if I told him that was my diet because thats all I could keep down and then he would immediately remove a lot of my fill!!

GG I'll keep my fingers crossed its not a leak too. Drs aren't always 100% focused I've learned!....somewhere along the way I had an extra 0.5mls put in. I ended up with a slight slip and needed a total unfill and was shocked to learn there was 8ml in there rather than the 7.5 I thought I'd had for months and months!

    thanks She!

I bought some of the fancy compression tights (linebreak brand) I've been thinking about buying for a while (ridiculouly expensive at $100 a pair) and wore them for a 6.25 km run today which I completed in my personal best time of 35:52 with NO knee pain. Wooooooooo! I could barely beleive it when I got home and nothing was hurting!!!
  10. Hi guys, I'm defintely going to be keeping an eye on this thread for ideas/inspiration to get my last 20 off too. I was half way there (was down to 140), but then had a small slip and had to be totally unfilled a couple of months back. I'm only just this week happy with my fill level and restriction, so hopefully I'll be able to get back on track. I was running quite a bit too, but I've had a serious knee injury for several months that is only just getting back to normal with weekly physio and lots of stretching/strengthing exercises. The combo of no fill and no ability to exercise (it hurt to even walk a few paces when my injury was at its worst) made for an unhappy bandster who was gaining weight. It was my worst nightmare come true! Good luck to all of you with those last stubborn pounds!!

I agree LJM, you're not a meanie, you're just living in the real world.
  12. I'm with Jachut, the only way I can fuel myself for training is to eat rice and Pasta almost every day. I was training for a couple of halfs before I got a knee injury (weeks away from the race both times and still isn't 100%) and was running about 40kms a week. There is no way I could survive without carbs doing that! You'll need to consider on a proper training program in the weeks before the race you could be running anywhere between 50 and 60 kms. If you are serious about training consistently until the race in january, perhaps it might be worth an unfill to a level where you can eat rice and pasta to get the energy you need to train. Or have you not been able to eat them at all since being banded? There are other sources of carbs (like fruit and energy gels) but personally, they just don't give me the same oomph! that pasta and rice do if I eat them regularly as part of my diet. Congrats on the decision to do the half, I still aspire to be able to complete one when I get my knee back to proper health!

    thanks She!

My plan for when I was training for the half was to TRY to carb load for a few days before by grazing on Pasta of some kind all day. Not exactly the recommended eating style for a bandster, but I had pretty good restriction back then and just couldn't think of any other way to get the carbs in that I needed. They really are the only thing that fuel me for a 9+km run, I feel flat and slow if I don't eat them regularly when I am running regularly. I had a friend who did a marathon earlier this year, she swore by having a GU gel every 5kms to get her past the 15km mark. I guess the best thing to do is try a few different combos of food/gels/energy drinks & bars and see what works!

I was coming on here to say rant about the fact that I just got a speeding fine on top of the $700 of bills. But I think its more important to extend my sincerest condolences to you Chickie. I'm so sorry about your FIL. My thoughts are with you and your family *BIG HUGS*

Oooh whosya I can't wait for my sportband to arrive!!! And Jacqui GREAT job on the 10km, 61 minutes is AWESOME! I have a lightweight adidas wind proof jacket I wear which has mesh down the sides so it breathes a bit, I think I paid $90 for it. I wear a long sleeved nike running shirt underneath and by time I'm done with 6kms I'm pretty warm but not hot and it definitely blocks that horrible wind chill. Its just enough for the 3-5ish degree celcius weather it normally is when I get out for my runs. Winter sucks for running!!!!

Anyone watch 60 minutes last week?

I watched it online after Jachut mentioned it in another thread. I wasn't that bothered about it. I think that it was definitely directed towards the "curing diabetes" side of things, but thats a journalist's perogative to write it from that perspective, really, because the band DOES do that for some people. Like Nat I was more pi$$ed at the ignorant buffoon that wrote the letter that was read last night - that fat people should eat less and exercise more. What a moron! They would have offended an increasing percentage of the population with that comment. Fattism is as rampant as ever.....but at least we're doing something about it, if you're an idiot, theres not much you can do about that is there? lol.
  21. Before my band, the most exercise I did was walk to the mailbox to get the mail, or the fridge to get my chocolate lol. I joined a gym about 2 months post op, I knew I had to be more active to get the results I wanted. I was VERY unfit - like I puffed doing up my shoelaces unfit... I could barely do 2 or 3 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill for a little while, but kept going back, because it was working, the weight was coming off fast. I then got fitter and started mostly running and doing spin/RPM classes after 6-8months. When my gym membership ran out in Jan of this year, I didn't renew it because I'd fallen so in love with running outdoors that the idea of being in a stuffy room full of other sweaty people no longer did it for me. I completed a few 5 and 10km fun runs and started seriously training (twice!) for a half marathon (21.1km) only to be sidelined weeks out from the race with an injury each time, the last time the injury being quite serious. My last injury is STILL (months later) on the mend so I'm not running as much or as far as I would like, but I hope to complete a 10km in September, that will be the sign for me that I am getting better. I also do a 75 minute hatha yoga class once a week. I love the challenge of the stretching, balancing and holding my body that this gives me. And its a great gentle change to the impact of running. I think the the biggest thing for me in all of this was a) seeing the results, that made me want to go back to the gym 5 or 6 days a week to do as much as I could to start with. Sometimes that was half an hour, sometimes it was 2 x 1 hour sessions a day and  finding something I loved. I really love the way running makes me feel emotionally and physically (and the same with yoga, it is my second love). Running is not for everyone, but try different things out and you might be surprised at what feels like a good fit for you. I REALLY don't beleive in the old "I'm not built for running / rowing / cycling / boxing / yoga / fit what ever activity here". You don't need to be an athelete or champion, you just have to like what you are doing and be able to find the timeto do it. Trust me, I don't have a typical runners build at all (this D sized chest I have makes sure of that haha!). Good luck with finding something that inspires you, I truly beleive if we let ourselves find it, there is something out there for everyone to enjoy in the way of exercise.

  24. I didn't see the 60 minutes episode when it was on Jacqui, but I just looked it up and watched it now. Very interesting! If any one else is interested go to Sixty Minutes - Home and click on the Medical Marvel video. It goes for about 12 and a half minutes (beware of those wonderful Aussie accents )
