  1. I didn't deviate from my post-op diet. I didn't want to have a leak - and if I stuck to all my Dr's recommendations and still got one, I knew it wouldn't be MY fault. I didn't want to stray from the diet, get a leak, and have no one to blame but myself.

    Complications

Scary! Did you ever have any clotting issues before? Or anyone in your family? Did they figure out why you had the clot? Any sort of mutation?

Anyone Wanna Do A 7-Day Paleo Challenge With Me?

I'm reading Mark Sisson's "21-day primal blueprint" and just browsing various sites online. Strictly speaking, it appears that there's "paleo" and then there's "primal" - because some people just HAVE to have a name for what they eat - and the difference is that "primal" allows some high-fat dairy, whereas "paleo" is dairy-free. I've known about paleo for a while, it's a popular way of eating among people who do Crossfit (which I do). My gym actually did a paleo challenge back in the fall for a month, but I said "HELL NO" as soon as I heard the "no dairy" bit. I enjoy dairy, so I'm going for "primal," since it allows lattes and cream in my coffee, haha. We'll see how it goes - I would like to attempt going dairy-free for a while in the end, because I'm trying to clear up my skin a bit and I know dairy tends to worsen your skin. But I'll see if going grain/legume-free will be enough on its own.
  4. 6 hours into Day 1 of no grains/no legumes/no sugar/no sweeteners....so far so good, lol

    ***need Your Opinions Everyone***

I think it's very good.....so many trainers have no freaking clue what it's like to only be able to eat limited portions. On the other hand, so many nutritionists don't have any idea what a serious exerciser should eat (e.g. much higher protein than your regular person). Also, a formerly overweight person would have a good idea of the limitations associated with excess weight - e.g. expecting an obese individual to do a pull-up is ridiculous, so you have to be creative and come up with variations on bodyweight exercises so that your clients get stronger in preparation for advancing to the next level.

    Bulking/cutting For... Surgery?

More abdominal muscle is better - more for the surgeon to work with during suturing and it will hold suture better and is less likely to result in an incisional hernia. Never heard a surgeon complain about someone being in too good of a shape....but they sure hate out of shape people.

Anyone Wanna Do A 7-Day Paleo Challenge With Me?

Holy crap, that's a lot of food! I'm on call tomorrow, so I'll be at the hospital for 26 hours. Hoping that I can get some sleep, but I had to pack enough food to last 26 hours on my feet, and omg, it's a LOT of volume! Things I'll be eating from 5:30 am tomorrow to 7:30 am on Tues: smoothie with 1 cup coconut milk and 1 cup blueberries 2 eggs 1 clamshell of strawberries 1 clamshell of blackberries 6 small cucumbers 8 small heirloom tomatoes 1 apple 1 oz hazelnut butter (NOM! Never tried it before, it's SO good!) 2 eye of round steaks 1 pear 1/2 container of plain Greek yogurt and then unlimited coffee with cream and tea Believe it or not, that ridiculous amount of food is under 1800 calories. I also packed a can of tuna in case I have a major snack attack, but I hope all of the above stuff will be enough! Heavy on fruit, but I'm not a huge vegetable person, so I'm taking it easy on myself in at least ONE department. Dear Lord, give me strength, lol.
  10. I had a legit gastroenteritis a few months ago, and the vomiting was still quite forceful. It's very different than the weird burp-vomits from overeating. I think those ones come just from food stuck in the esophagus and coming back up, and aren't real vomiting.

Anyone Wanna Do A 7-Day Paleo Challenge With Me?

I'm not gonna lie, planning this several days ahead of time was NOT a good idea....mostly because in the meantime, anticipating the deprivation of days to come, I've consumed every single drop of sugar and bread in the house!

    Couch To 5-K

Did Week 6, Day 2 this morning! The first 10-min interval was a breeze. The second one was tough, but I made it without stopping. I covered 4 km in 23 mins (2 10-min runs and the 3-min walk in between). Pretty happy, especially because according to my log, I hadn't run for 9 days!
  13. chest cold for a week now....the allergies on top aren't helping, either

Post Opers I Have A Question. Concerned!

If you can't take it by mouth, there are various beta blockers that can be given IV, e.g. labetalol. Edit: apparently, there's IV atenolol, also.

    Night Shift

I actually read that when a person starts working nights, their metabolism slows down by 10% within 2 or 3 weeks. I do call, so I occasionally work 24-28 hours in a row, with a few hours of sleep at night if I'm lucky. I definitely find that as the night goes on, my willpower drops and my desire to eat whatever increases drastically. Your body is low on energy and is trying to find some, and since sleep is not an option, the next natural source of energy is food.

Anyone Wanna Do A 7-Day Paleo Challenge With Me?

Yeah, I could see how it'd be tough if you are early out, I personally wouldn't do it if I weren't able to eat a couple of ounces of food at once. And yeah, I wouldn't eat my meat raw, either! I eat carpaccio and steak tartare, and I eat raw oysters and, of course, sashimi, but I just don't feel comfortable buying meat even at the farmers' market to eat raw. E. coli is serious business, and so is cholera! Plus I think raw red meat would be tough on the sleeve.

    Dr. Aceves

I just thought I'd share with those who are considering Dr. Aceves for their sleeve - I'm currently doing a rotation in bariatric surgery and the other day, I told my preceptor that I had been sleeved. He (a bariatric surgeon himself) was absolutely blown away by my results and actually called his 2 bariatric fellows to the room just to look at my abs and marvel at the fact that they would've never guessed I had any sort of bariatric surgery and that I could get results like this without plastics. My preceptor kept asking how Dr. Aceves managed to remove my stomach through such a tiny incision - he said he would've never figured I was sleeved based on how tiny my scars are! He even thought Dr. Aceves must've gone through the mouth as opposed to through the abdomen. So there you go, even other specialists in this area are blown away by his work!

    Hiatal Hernia Develops Post Op

I suppose it's possible that your sleeve is so narrow, that it's actually able to slip out easier now than your full-sized stomach would before. Technically, weightloss generally improves hiatal hernias, so your surgeon will likely tell you to wait it out and see whether your symptoms improve once you reach your goal weight. I also suspect that once your sleeve stretches out a bit, it might be less likely to pop out through that opening. Alternatively, it can still be fixed surgically, but they use a different (simpler) procedure, where they just throw in some stitches in the diaphragm to tighten the opening, whereas the traditional procedure involves some additional steps, including wrapping the stomach around the esophagus to tighten it.

    Couch To 5-K

Oh man, I haven't run for a week now! I developed a bad cold last weekend, and I was not able to take time off from work to recover, so I just trudged there every morning at 6 AM despite a low grade fever and generally feeling awful....It's been a week, and I STILL have a bad, chesty cough! I was up at 3:30 last night for no reason but just to hack up a lung for half an hour. Today I went for a short walk, and within 4 blocks, I was having a coughing fit, so I'm still not cleared. I'm going to try the gym tomorrow and depending on how it goes, I'm hoping to attempt a run on Sunday.
  22. You can do both at the same time. Your hernia repair is likely to last longer because you'll start losing weight (excess weight is a major risk factor for hernias).

    I Need A Sports Bra!

Lululemon TaTa Tamer. Seriously, end of story (I've tried 'em all!). I'm a DD and it's the absolute best bra; plus it separates nicely and has light padding for more oomph and nip coverage.

    Gallstones?surgery Again?

I've been lucky; but you're right, it's not uncommon. Unfortunately, you'll have to have it out at some point; might as well do it pre-emptively before you have an attack. It's normally done laparoscopically, although if you have extensive scarring from your previous surgeries, they sometimes end up making a classical incision.
