  1. Hello! I had my surgery 7/21, and I'm feeling pretty good! I was having pain from my port incision, but ibuprofen REALLY helped that. I am not taking pain meds anymore- just the ibuprofen. Can't believe how much more that has helped! Getting pretty tired of liquids- can't wait until Wed. and hopefully I'll be on soft/pureed food. Mostly, I'm just sleepy. I think that was a lot from the anesthesia(sp.) and the fennegren, but all in all, doing good. Nice to meet you all and best of luck on our continued recoveries! :smile2:

Im just curious, did your doctor tell you to take ibuprofen? Because when I left the hospital, my surgeon said that I am strictly not allowed to use Ibuprofen anymore. he didnt really explain why though.

  2. Thats so weird that that happened to you. When I was on my 2 week liver shrinking diet, I was eating a sandwhich one night and the roof of my mouth started hurting so bad that i couldnt finish eating the sandwich. it was so weird!

  3. I had my surgery on the 21st, and the night before, i was having doubts about it, but once I got it done, I was really proud of myself for making it through the procedure. I think its normal to have doubts, especially when making such a huge decision. I was having doubts because I am going into my senior year of college and I have so many things that I want to do next year while im at school, that the though of something going wrong really bothered me, but I read a lot of stories on this website, and I decided that the benefits outweighed the risks, so I decided to go through it, and I am very happy i did.

Sorry if that didnt make sense, I just took some Percocet. lol

  4. I cant remember if I was told by my surgeon ahead of time if I was going to be doing a barium swallow, but i expected it after reading so many people's surgery day stories. Those stories helped me a lot. I wasnt surprised about the blood thinner shot, or that it would burn, because so many people mentioned that it burned, so I expected it.

  5. Congratulations!

I was banded on Wednesday, and my surgeon also found a hernia. Apparently it was one of the biggest ones that he had seen, so instead of using the 1 stitch that us needed to repair most hernias, he had to use 4 stitches on my, and they went through the diaphram, so I have been in a lot of pain.

I look forward to reading about your story!

  6. I was just banded on Wednesday, and I had a problem wiht telling people too. My insurance doesnt cover the whole thing, so my mom is paying the rest, so there is no way to really do this without her knowing. I did, however, tell her that I wanted to be the one to tell people about it when I was ready, but she went to work every day and when she got home, she had told another person. I was lucky because everyone was supportive, but I didnt want people to know, because I thought that people would always be asking me When im getting the surgery done, whether I even decided about getting it, which would have added more pressure to it. i didnt even tell my aunts and grandmother until a week before my surgery.

  7. Could someone please explain why the gas and shoulder pain? I am a newbie awaiting surgery and never imagined this pain.

You have gas after surgery, because when they are operating Laproscopically (sp?) they use gas to expand your stomach so that they can see things easier. Some surgeons suck the gas back out. It isnt like intestinal gas or something like that. it is just gas moving around your body, which is why some poeple feel it in their shoulder. The best thing to get rid of it is to walk around A LOT because it helps it dissolve, and if you are lucky, you will burp it out. I hope that helped a little.

  8. I would have to say that the pain after I got out of surgery was at a 10. I had a huge hiatial hernia (they said it was the biggest one they had seen, and instead of the normal 1 stitch they use, they had to use 4 on me), and they had to stitch it to my diaphram, so it hurt really bad, adn it still hurts a little, and i just had surgery yestury. I didnt have much gas, but the hernia repair definately made up for it.

  9. I can finally consider myself banded! I was banded yesturday at Parham Doctors Hospital in Richmond, VA. My morning started off with taking a shower wiht the special soap that they gave me at my pre-admission testing. When I got to the waiting room, the only thing that i was nervous about was getting an IV because I hate needles. The nurse was very nice though. she gave me a shot to prevent blood clots, and then she gave me a shot of lidocane in my hand and numbed it so that she could give me the IV.

I was in the holding room for quite a while, and while I was waiting, I talked to my surgeon, met the anesthesit, and all of the nurses. Soon after that, they wheeled me to the operating room where I had to scoot myself to the table. Then they pushed something in to my IV and ave me the breathing mask and then I fell asleep.

I woke up in a lot of pain, because I had to have a Hiatial Hernia repair, and it was appaently one of the worst ones my surgeon has ever seen. He said he usually only needs one stitch, but he ended up needing to use 4 on me, so I was in a lot of pain. They put of pain medicine in my IV in the recovery room, but it didnt work, then my mom came back and I was having discussions that I dont even remember. I was also having trouble because I kept forgetting to breathe, but as soon as the nurse offered me a popsicle, I was so much better!

As soon as I got to my room, I was begging people to let me walk, which I did, and I even walked all the way to raidiology do that I could do my barium swollow.

After that, i was still in a lot of pain, so all night the nurses gave me morphine every hour. It was a long night with people coming in to wake me up. At 3:30 am, a lab tech came in to take my blood, and then at 6, I had to get another shot to prevent blood clots. Over the course of the time there, I was up walking a lot.

I finally was discharged about 2 hours ago, and now that I am home, I am eating sugar free popsicle, and drifting off to sleep, so sorry if this doesnt make much sense.

Good luck to everyone getting banded in the new future and to other people who are still in the decision process making.

  10. im getting a little nervous. Ive been on the pre-op diet since last thursday and today I went to have my last appointment wiht the surgeon before my surgery and I only lost 4 pounds. I know that the liver shrinking diet isnt for losing weight, but now he wants me to lose 8 pounds by my surgery and i am worried that its not going to happen.

also during my appointment, he couldnt feel my liver. I am wondering about that. Are they supposed to be able to feel livers. I am worried that it is too big and they wont do the operation.

  11. I have a question - did anyone on here have an allergic reaction to antibiotics that you were given during or after surgery? I am asking this because I am allergic to a list of antibotics that is a mile long, and I am worried that they will give me one that I havent had before and I will have an allergic reaction to it.
