Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I've been following another post that was posted by Butterfly23 in the General Gastric Sleeve Discussion titled "Benefits of losing weight slower than expected" where Butterfly23 makes some excellent points to why losing weight slowly is a benefit. These are the points that Butterfly23 posted and have given me a new appreciation. I hope she doesn't mind that I quoted her points in this post. Thank you Butterfly23 for posting these points. (see below) This is the list that Butterfly23 has posted on her post on the benefits of losing slowly: More time to develop healthy eating habits before maintenance Skin has more time to catch up (more time to lotion!) Shifting focus to NSVs like sitting in booths and chairs with arms Less chance of gallstones Opportunity to practice loving kindness towards myself and being grateful for any positive change Chance to manage expectations – if it wasn’t for WLS, I’d be thrilled with my loss, so why not be thrilled now? Practice focusing on my own wins and not comparing self to others Not having to explain to others since loss isn’t dramatic (yet) Chance to trust the process and not focus on the end (self-care, water/protein/low-carb/active) Redefine success as how I feel, not numbers on scale Understanding this is not a diet, this is my lifestyle now, so what is the rush? My favorite is not having to explain to others since loss isn't dramatic (yet) With lapband I lost weight very quickly and people at work were concerned about me thinking that I was ill or maybe dying. I'll never forget one division called me into their area and so very carefully asked if I was sick and if I was OK. WOW! jake

    Male Sleevers?

5 lbs. is substantial! Maybe it was just a plateau that you hit and you're out of it! Man, I hope that's what it is/was. I know how frustrating it can be! Let me know how it goes. I see my sleeve doc. next week and will ask him about needing more calories suggestion(s). I want to beleive that it is so, because before I had the lapband removed and revised I was stuck on the same weight with the lapband for 2 years doing the same gym routine. Now sleeved, I've added strenght training along side the cardio hoping to break the cycle, plateau or whatever it is. I do know for sure that my clothing fit much better, so, there is some good news. I was content with that for awhile, but, until the scale shows it, I will continue to stress. jake

    Male Sleevers?

Hey mulepick, I don't have definite input, but, will share what I've been told. See, I'm in the same boat. I was revised from lapband to sleeve May 1, lost 30 lbs. since pre-op diet and am currently stuck at the same weight. The past month(s) I've been down 3 pounds, then, up 3 pounds. My Gym workouts are 45 minutes cardio, burning 800 - 1000 calories, then, 30 minute strenght training. I've met with a nutritionist and also a trainer and they both tell me that I'm not eating enough calories and my body is in starvation mode. I know that I'm repeating myself as I've posted all this before, but, the issue is that I just cannot eat more with sleeve. I'm doing Protein shakes inbetween meals and was really sick of them until recently when I concocted a tasty protein consisting of Walmart vanilla creme Muscle Milk, with 1/4 cup oatmeal, 1 banana or Peanut Butter. I'm trying to drink 2 of these throughout the day, but, they fill me up quickly. Anyhow, let's see if this works. I've asked this question on other sites and the frequent response I get is that I have to find what works for me. It gets frustrating! I want to reach goal one day of 190 lbs, but, I'm not getting there anytime soon, so it seems This probably isn't much help, but, if nothing else, feel at ease that you are not alone. jake

    Food capacity with exercising

Protein shakes are terrible after awhile and become difficult to even look at, but, for now, I concocted a decent tasting one that I am using before and after my workout I use one scoop of Walmart's vanilla cream Muscle milk with skim milk, 1/2 banana and 1/4 cup of oatmeal in the blender. It taste like a milkshake - uhhh -- well almost. :-) The strange thing is that this shake mixture gives me the energy to push my workout even further and keeps my hunger very satisfied until supper time. This is probably the perfect ingredients match that I was lacking. Issue is I'm getting a little tired of it. To keep from getting bored with the same ole, I'll change the shake thing for 1/4 cup cottage cheese with peaches/fruit and almonds or a yogurt with almonds and a toast with sugar free jam. Would love to hear of other ideas. jake

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

Like I said I am only guessing. I know there has been some talk on metabolism on other sites, but, I'm not sure how that works. The reason I posted that was because Judy's band removal has been 3 years ago and she gained all her weight back and then some. I will research this tomorrow and see what I find. I know that there has been some talk on a facebook support group about this. I'll look it up and then I'll know what to google. jake

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

Judyd, I think what you are asking is after your band was removed 3 years ago and your upcoming sleeve surgery, will you still have slow weight loss with the sleeve or is the slow weight loss because you get both surgeries done at the same time or closer to each other. A very good question. The little I've read and understand is that a WL surgery patient's metabolism changes in time, thus, weight loss slows down. Because you had this time gap between surgeries and have also gained weight you may be a normal weight loss candidate as if you were getting WL surgery for the first time and I say this because your metabolism again has changed since the band was removal and the weight gain. Now, I'm just completely guessing this and am now curious. Please, anyone out there correct me or does anyone have the correct information on this. I'm super curious now. jake

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

I'm 8 weeks out band to sleeve revised and yes weight loss is slow for me, however, I was also at a stand still with my weight loss right before they removed the band and actually gained some weight before removal. I think with any weight loss surgery, you come upon a halt in weight loss at a given time. After 100 lbs. loss with the lap band, I was stalled for months (plateau) I remember my lap band doctor saying that the band did all it was going to do and now it was up to me. What that meant I never questioned, but, hearing other people stories and frustrations, there seems to be truth to this. What throws me off mentally is that I work out rigorously 7 days a week - 40 minutes hard cardio and now 1/2 hour light strength training. With the band it was 60 minutes cardio only and did this for 2 years with results of being down 5 lbs and then up 5 lbs. Now, with the sleeve I'm down 3 lbs, then up 3 lbs. I've talked to a trainer whom tells me that I'm calorie deficient due to my rigorous workouts. If that is the issue, I just cannot get more food into me. If i eat small meals all day, then, I can't get my Water intake in and throws my digestive system off. I drink Protein shakes in-between meals, but, I am soooo tired of them! Maybe, getting a protein with higher calories? I see my doc in 3 weeks and will ask. On a more positive note, I'm not reporting that I met my short term goal of getting into a smaller pant size and shirt size. I went from a 36 waist to a very comfortable 34 waist and my shirts were Xlarge and now wear a comfortable Large, so, things are happening for me, but, darn it, I want the scale to show it!!!! I know men lose differently, but, the slow weight loss for revisions is very real for both sexes, yet, I read of others that were revised (men and women) that are very successful. I want to know their secret! jake

    Over Eating

It does get better. If it continues to be bothersome, I would go back to the clear liquid to full liquids stage for a few days. For me, it seemed like the pain got better overnight. 2 months out and I still get pain if I overeat. Hang in there.
  9. NoMoBand

    Food capacity with exercising

This was an issue for me until a very wise trainer told me to either drink a Protein shake or eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal 1 hour before my workout. What's happening is that your body is using every ounce of energy and leaves you starving at the end of your workout. Now, without the starvation feeling I can concentrate on restriction and feeling full. My workout time is after work and with the added nutrition has made a huge difference for me. Hope this helps. jake
  10. Something to be aware of. Depending on what kind of damage the band may have done or the amount of scar tissue internally can make a difference on how the sleeve will work for you. This is how my doctor explained it to me. Once he's in and makes his assessment on damage he will do band removal and sleeve revision in the same surgery, however, if there too much scar tissue or extensive repairs that need to be done, the patient stays under anesthesia or under too long making it unsafe and I may wake up to discover that only the band was removed. Most important is if the repairs are extensive, the repair(s) may need time to heal, otherwise, the sleeve may not be as effective. Many doctors will not take the chance and require a 3 month wait for things to heal after band removal before doing the sleeve. Next, an instrument that the surgeon uses called a bougie is used to size the sleeve. For band to sleeve revision patients, surgeons will use larger bougies. The larger bougies are safer for patients and provide less chance of leaks on the staple line. A person getting bariatric sleeve surgery the very first time, can get the smaller bougie for obvious reasons. My surgeon used a 39F bougie on my revision and 1/2 cup of food is all I can handle and am doing far better with the sleeve than the band. Unfortunately, as you do your research you will find the few that have no or little restriction after getting revision and usually because the sleeve was made too big and a re-sleeve is sometimes done. Talk to your doctor about this. He should tell you what size he uses and will give you an idea as to what to expect. I am 2 months out and have absolutely no regrets. Once again I had to take a gamble and it turned out well for me. I wish that I would have done the sleeve from get go, but, everything always works out. Here is a picture of bougie size comparison. Hope this helps. jake
  11. I saw the new surgeon with my UGI results today. The lapband must be removed due to esophagus and pouch dilation. Yes, pouch dilation is a real complication. I am getting sleeve revision during the same removal surgery in 3 weeks. I have an enormous amount of mixed feelings, but, I know one thing and that is, I will be forever grateful to the band because it saved my life and I made a promise if I were to lose the band, I would never bash the band or become a band hater or make anyone feel like the band was a bad decision! Facts are facts, when I signed on the dotted line, I knew that this type of surgery, like all others, had potential complications and it was my decision to take a gamble on the band. Period! I become angered with the opinions of others that don't understand what a banded person goes through. As it has been said again and again that support sites, we mainly hear about the negative or about issues and we don't hear much about the very successful banded people that have been banded many, many years and don't post on these site often. I definitely have no regrets!I I will miss the band! The only thing that I will say is that I thank God that I have insurance that covered most of my fills, checkups and now revision. I can't even imagine if I were out of coverage. If complications are becoming more pronounce with the band, Ehthicon should provide help for people that no longer have insurance coverage or help push for affordable bariatric insurance coverage. Just my opinion. Did I fail the band? I'll take some responsibility, but not all. I think of myself as a compliant band patient, but who knows anymore. I have talked about my severe allergies and massive drainage in multiple posts. I will reiterate - if you have severe allergies - the band is NOT for you. I will admit that at one short period of time, I became non-compliant with the rules especially with not eating slow and chewing well and stretched my pouch the first time. I had a deflate for 6 weeks and pouch shrunk back to normal. Once you've stretched the pouch once, it will probably happen again. I started measuring my meals to prevent pouch stretching, but, allergies continued which probably contributed to pouch and esophagus dilation. On top of this, the revision doctor tells me that I was fitted with a standard size Allergan band and I probably should have been fitted with a large, which makes the most sense. May be why I could only hold 2.2cc's at most without being too tight. With all the fills, unfills due to allergies, which were always done under fluoroscopy, my band doctor checked my band frequently and is why we found my issue early enough. If you don't get anything out of my post, Please, Please have the band checked at least once a year. I want to thank many of you for your help and suggestions that you offered in my many times of distress. Be well, Be safe and most of all Be respectful to one another and beware of opinions of others. Remember a very successful banded person is not a doctor! Always, check with your doctor when you are not sure. The "know it alls" mean well, but they are way off at times. I will probably not be coming back here as often because I joined a band to sleeve revision support group and am enjoying the respect and compassion they seem to all have in common. Good luck in your journeys and may God bless each one of you! Jake
  12. What were your symptoms prior to getting your band removed? I didn't have much restriction anymore and was gaining weight. The thing that saved me from gaining more weight than I did was I was working out at least 5 days a week. With my esophagus stretching I was forming another stomach on top of my pouch. Luckily, I caught it in time and had the band removed. Looking back, early on when I was first banded I had to have a complete unfill for 6 weeks due to my esophagus looking bigger than it should, so, this complication was with me from get go. I also had several unfills due to pouch dilation. My new doc tells me that my band may have been fitted with the wrong size. I was installed a standard size and should have been a large sized band. I could only hold 2.2cc's at most, otherwise, I was way too tight. I always questioned why I could hold so little and was always getting unfills, fills, something didn't seem right.. Anyhow, everything always works out. I had my band removed and am now sleeved. I am 6 weeks out. What a difference. With the sleeve, feeling full is actually feeling full and you know when to stop. I'm still getting used to this, but, so far so good. Jake
  13. Judyd, I also had my band removed due to esophagus issues, as mentioned in my previous post. I had band removal and sleeve in one surgery. My doctor warned me about the potential of getting acid reflux or GERD, vomiting etc. with the sleeve, however, my understanding was it was usually for a short period of time and did go away, however, there was a slight chance of it remaining with me for an adnormal amount of time. I remember him telling me that I may be on Prilosec for awhile. I took the chance and so far so good. Luckily, no issues with major reflux and the little I do have is not a big issue. What I like about the sleeve is that I know when I'm full and "full" is a word for a sleeved person. With lapband I had to measure everything I ate and it was touch and go after that. 6 weeks out and I know when to stop eating my meal - full is full! Lapband and Sleeve, for me, are two different worlds of WL surgery. Hope this helps to ease your concerns. I'd say "go for it" Much luck to you. Let us know when you get it done. jake

3 wks post op - very low energy

In addition to all above and especially getting more protien in, I also use a stresstab that sells at Walmart that is very effective! Using these have helped me get back to the gym again. jake
  15. Here is another perspective. I am a little over 3 weeks band to sleeve revisioned (if that's a word). I was very successful with the band and lost 120 lbs., however, it was not all band. I worked my butt off in the gym to get there. I really liked the band and almost 5 years with the band I discovered early enough that my esophagus was in trouble. So far, I can say the sleeve is very different. I really enjoy the fact that I don't have to worry about PB's and stuck episodes. The restriction with sleeve is very different! Of course, I am way too early to be posting anything, but, thus far I don't have any regrets and like what I am experiencing. I am looking forward to sleeve adventures and weight loss. We'll see what tomorrow brings, but, today is awesome thus far! jake

    Dumping Syndrome

Dumping Syndrome definitely happens to the sleeved. I'm a little over 2 weeks out and had my first episode. It was hell! Sweating profusely, wanting to pass out, nausea beyond belief, lasting over 1/2 hour. My question - Some sleeved do not experience dumping syndrome while others do. If we do, is this something that will be an issue the rest of our lives? jake
  17. The wait will be well worth it! Congratulations! How's the pre-op diet going for you? The pre-op diet is the most difficult of the whole process, IMO. Succeed with the diet and the rest is cake - Well almost. Good luck bvenegas. jake
  18. Want2surf, I had band to sleeve revision also on same day that you did. If you don't mind me asking, how different did you find this surgery from the lapband? Of course, the port removal was a bit more painful, but, just curious overall how did the surgery recovery, diet, etc. differ for you. I started the pureed stuff today and I hurt a little bit when I had scrambled eggs. I think the mistake I made was that the scrambled eggs were on the dry side. I also made a huge mistake and tried 1/4 cup of sugar free ice cream and I think I know what dumping syndrome is all about - won't do that again!! jake

  20. Bayugirmrsc, Thanks for sharing Jake.... by the way, Jake is one of my fav. names....js. anywho... My friend and "lapband" mentor had to have her band removed last month and she opted for the sleeve. I talked with her yesterday as a matter of fact and she is SOOOOO happy with the sleeve. I hope and Pray that you have great results also. Please keep us posted. _________________________________________________________________________ As of May 4, my band is out and I was sleeved during the same surgery. My sleeve doctor will do both removal and sleeve if there is not a large amount of scar tissue and if the band/stomach is in good shape, where other surgeons will not do two in one. All went well for me. What I can say is that for me, this one was quite a bit more painful than the initial lapband install surgery, but, my doc warned me. The incision where he removed the port was the worst as far as pain! But then, It was like over night and the pain got better and manageable. I'm down 23 lbs. already which includes the 2 week pre-op diet til today. I'm at the gym again at turtle speeds and feeling great! I needed to tell someone and you asked if I would keep you posted and I went forth, Thank you for that. BTW, Jake is my middle name and I use it because I also like it very much. If you noticed I've changed my display name from jakealta to NoMoBand making it an official name change, but, jake is out of the name :-( So, so far so good, Thank God!!!! Should you ever find yourself in a predicament with a possible revision and have questions, please do ask. I'm here to help. God Bless and thanks again. Jake
