  1. I do feel like I have lost some energy from my preop diet, but my doctor encouraged me to get out and get exercise daily. My diet as a whole includes about 600-650 calories so I am getting WAY less than I was used to. In the last couple months I have been running, but I thought since I am a little more fatigued as of late I have switched to the elliptical. I like you suggestion of swimming. Maybe I will take a couple laps tonight and then relax in the hot tub at the gym.

Thank you for the info. That was my concern, is I'm only going to be taking in 800 calories so if I'm buring 200 on top of that am I going to keel over and pass out on the treadmill? lol! I think it will be ok though and I really don't want to break this streak I'm on....cause let's face it...if it were easy to work out I wouldn't be in this position! lol! You should definitely try swimming! The first day I was very very sore but it was a great workout and something different.

  2. Thank you for the responses!

@NCBandit and Amanda - That's such great news to hear you've both lost so much weight with the pre-op diet! I did hear you can lose up to 20 pounds but wasn't sure if that was true.

@Honk - Thanks for the info on the MP3 player! That would be amazing to be able to swim and still listen to my music!! I've loved being back in the pool and swimming has really helped me get back into the the mindset of working out!

  3. Hi everyone! I start my pre-op diet on Wednesday. I'm required to use Optifast shakes plus a bar each day for the next two weeks. I've been really good lately about working out and have somewhat of a routine going right now that I really don't want to break. It's not much, just two classes and one day of swimming laps or the eliptical.

I was just curious if anyone noticed a loss of energy from their pre-op diet and if they were still able to workout during that time? Should I keep at it or just stop until after surgery?

  4. It's crazy to think 7 months ago I was so sad I had to wait 6 months to get a surgery date. Now that the surgery is two weeks away I'm like "am I ready for this?"!! My surgery date is also March 16th and I'm super excited to start my new life but I'm really nervous too. Just picked up my Optifast shakes and bars for my pre-op diet that I'll be starting on Wednesday!! Yay surgery is right around the corner! :)

  5. Hi Jenny,

I had my 6 month diet and exercise program done through my sugeon's office. Each month we met as a group (around 8 people) for a nutrition class. The nutritionist would pick a different topic each month (eating out, reading nutrition lables, importance of physical activity) and we would have an opportunity to ask questions. I was very surprised how much I learned and how quickly the time flew by!! Good luck to you in your journey! :)

  6. Hello everyone! I am meeting with my doctor 3/8 to get my surgery scheduled. It seems that the process has gone pretty smooth so of course I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm so worried that I have come this far and something will happen with the insurance or something. I have fought like crazy with my husband to get this surgery and I will be crushed if falls through. Anyway, just thought I would say hello to everyone and this board is great!!

Hi Jshivery! Welcome and good luck with your appointment! :)

  7. My surgery is scheduled March 9th. They gave me a 35 page of a diet with the proper foods from start to finish. I'm excited!!!!!!!

Wow 35 pages!! That's a lot of info! I have a 2 hour pre-op appt tomorrow with the nutritionist where she'll be going over the different stages of eating and should be getting all that great information to take home too!

  8. Going to my first support group meeting tonight. My DH even changed his work schedule so that I can attend. I keep telling him to look out more Overtime is going to be coming his way due to the fact I will need a new wardrobe soon. Now off to the gym before the kids get up. Gosh I really hate this mid-winter break - it messes up my morning routine. Have a good day everyone!!

So great to hear you have such a wonderful support system in place!! I had my first support group meeting last night and it was so refreshing to see family members there supporting their loved ones! Have a great workout! :)

  9. O wow!!! Hey there twin...LoL: ) Optifast is not as bad as I thought it would be, chocolate is my favorite.

LoL! Oh good I'm soooo happy to hear its not too bad!! Do you have the Soup too? I heard from someone else who had her surgery through my surgeon that we will be allowed to have one Optifast Soup a day along with the shakes. She said the chicken was awful but the Tomato is supposed to be bearable! We shall see; I start mine on the 2nd :)

  10. I am scheduled for March 11. When I think about it I get really nervous sometimes. I think OMG what if it doesn't work and I don't lose. Anyway it helps sometimes to read the blogs. Be careful and stay away from the negative blogs.

So good luck to us all.

I feel the same way!! You read all the posts about people who've only lost 30 pounds in a year and it can get a little scary!! As my surgery date gets closer I'm definitely starting to get nervous about it all!! Good luck to you!!

  11. Hi Guys!!! I to am a March 2011 Bandit.. Yay Me!!! Im so jealous of u guys who get veggies and a meal with your pre-op diet. Im on opti-fast 5x a day , sugar and fat free Jello and Popsicle.... I dont know how I will go without chewing for 4 weeks... YES.. 4 weeks : ( .... O well enough of that my date is March.16. 2011

I'm right there with ya! My surgery date is March 16th and I have to use Optifast 5x a day for two weeks. I can't even imagine having to do that for FOUR weeks!! But I am looking forward to dropping some weight before surgery :)

  12. my surgery date is March 1, which means my pre-op diet starts on valentines day  ironically, I have been reading some of the other peoples' posts on here and my doctor is requiring my pre-op diet to be slimfast. Anyone else out there required to do the same?

It seems like everyones pre-op diet (if they have one) is a little different. I've seen some who have used SlimFast, Carnation or the Atkins shakes. I unfortunately have to use Optifast which I've heard doesn't taste very good and is expensive. Atleast I can have sugar free popsicles :)

  13. I'm approved I can't believe it went through so fast!! After 6 months of nutrition classes and another month of dealing with BS from my PCP all my paperwork was finally submitted to Cigna on Thursday afternoon. I got the call this morning that they received an approval!! My surgery date is March 16th!! YAY!! I can't wait to start my new life!!

  14. I'm with KristenC, the 6 months really isn't that bad. The time flew by for me and I'm so grateful for all the knowledge I have now as compared to when I first started this process. I have Cigna and they required the 6 month nutrition and fitness classes before I could get approval. I'm now going on month 7 in this whole process and while there have been some frustrating moments I feel 10 times more prepared than someone who was able to start their process and get their surgery in a months time.

Good luck with your process and your insurance! :)
