    March 2007 Bandsters

Hey guys...gotta question. My surgery date is the 28th....I've been on a preop diet for 3 1/2 wks....and I've only dropped 8-10 lbs. ARRRGHHHH....the Dr. told me to lose 10-15 lbs. I'm following the diet, doing what he said but dang, what to do?! I know many of you didn't have a pre-op diet, but I'm really bummed about the lack of loss. Any incite would be appreciated. Thanks, A.
  2. I too experienced this. Also, I've found that it depends on the type of Protein drink whether I get the runs. OH...and if I drink the protein too fast (got that bit of advice from a buddy). I've got the pre-op for a month...2 1/2 wks. left...UGH. Bordem has set in. Anyhoo...after about the 1st week, I wasn't hungry so much any more. The question I've got with this is during the 1 1/2 wk. of the 2 shakes a day I was FREEZING...now, I'm hot, like fever, but no sweat, no fever. Anyone got advice on this lovely bit of pre-op fun?!? :help:

    body temperature questions

I am currently on the pre-op diet of 2 shakes a day....and have been cold. But...the last couple of days I've been running hot & cold. Today for instance, it was about 80 outside and I was fine, but later I felt like I was running a temperature, but the thermometer didn't show one. Too young for the hot flash...is it related to the pre-op stuff? Help.... :girl_hug:

7 days postop to much protein?

Tried the grape....it gave me the runs. It tasted like IsoPur to me....so I'll stick to my other stuff. Good luck!

    preop liquid question

IMHO...I think that since my Dr. knows I'm a southern chick....he thinks that I need a little extra encouragement to make sure I'm commited to the post op plan. That being said, I really am ok with it. I'm down my 10 lbs already for pre-op, so if more goes, it's just bonus. But...I sure miss flavorful food. I ate pretty healthy before due to changes I've made in the last couple of years, but the endless round of choc, strawb., vanilla, etc. for the next 3 wks. is gonna drive me nuts.

Ok...gotta whine here. I know I've only been on the pre-op for a 1 1/2 wks. but dang I'm bored! I've got a month of the 2 shakes a day so there's about 3 wks. left. I'm fine with the fact that I'm eating less, and it's for my own good, but I love variety, and there's only so much you can do with the limited flavors of protein stuff. I may never eat vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc. again....aaaggghhh! Sorry, just had to whine cause today's the first day where I truly hate this repitition of things. Otherwise....life's good, gearing up for surgery. Finally found the subs for the dr. appt. and surgery date. So...the kids at school will be taken care of. Whew! And the cold thing associated with all this, wow, it's too freaky. I've never been cold natured and now, it was 80 here today and I was dressed for a mild WV winter. Sheesh! Well....enough of the pity party. Best of luck to all.

    preop liquid question

Well....I've been on the pre-op now for about a week and a half...3 more to go, yup a wholllle month! My Dr. was very specific about how many gms. of carbs and how many gms. of Protein I was to take in with each shake. I've discovered when I'm following things to the T I am COLD....and I never get cold. They say that's a sign of the ketosis thing.... So....I would say it depends. I add powdered strawberry or raspberry which only add about 1 carb to the mix...and being a cooking gal, I measure my stuff to come out to the correct amount of protein/carb #'s the Dr. wants. I count my gms. of each to be within guidelines given by the Dr. I have found that just can't abide mixing with Water...so I count my carbs in the fat free milk, and mix my powder accordingly. Also, by mixing with unsweetened soy milk, it's actually pretty good. So, there ya go....it's not a simple answer because there's not a national standard for this pre-op thing. Just follow the Dr....and try not to be bored with it....(whoops, advice for me in there....AARRRGGHHH) My surgery is the 28th...so we can be bored together...lol. Best of luck!
  9. I've tried searching the boards for an answer to this, but I'm currently on a Pre-Op diet w/protein drinks 2x a day. Why the diarrhea? Is this normal? Are there other reasons this might be happening? Any assistance would be appreciated. THANKS!

tammyj, I too am using the 6 Star....LOVE IT! I expecially like it mixed in unsweetened soy milk. I know, sounds crazy, but my Dr. is really strict about the drinks before surgery (and I've gotta month of it) and it keeps things in the range he's given. Also, skim milk keeps it there too. I've tried a bunch of different kinds since my appt. and was told that there would be a month long pre-op diet for me. This for me is the best so far. I'm still trying to find an Isopur that even tastes good to me. My buddy back east is trying them too....so we'll see. I'm also hoping to mix some unflavored protein with broth that I could do for lunches besides the constant choco or vanilla shake for each meal. (I'm 2x a day for a month). Good luck!

I must say I really am glad for this website. I know that when I went to my patient education seminar yesterday, I had really read most of the info about the lapband here on the message boards. Thanks everybody!

    Protein Powders

Didn't like the carb solutions much. I tried about 5-6 different kinds and my pick was the Six Star. Also, I have some dehydrated strawberries & raspberries. I ground them to powder (have spice mill...love to cook) and about 1T in my mix of vanilla is YUMMY. (yes, finally got to try the vanilla!) I'd like to try the unflavored whey. I don't like the unflavored soy...it's not really unflavored...ick. But, I might as well get used to things.

    Approved!!

:roll:YIPEE....got word last night that I'm approved. I've got to attend my seminar in a couple of weeks and hopefully then I'll have a surgery date. Time flies!

    Protein Powders

I get mine from Walmart...believe it or not. I too love the Chocolate and mix it w/Skim milk for a decent flavor. I would like to try the vanilla, but haven't it hasn't been at the store when I've gone. It is smooth like chocolate milk. Just make sure you check the directions for the right amount of protein & carbs. :rose:

    Newbie, preop diet help?

I've only gotten this from my Dr.'s guidelines: 30-40 gm. protein/drink, <15 gm. of carb/drink. I do this 2x a day....with the Protein and veggies with dinner (small). Now....I did find a tasty powder that I can combine with fat free milk (or water) and the carbs & protein #'s stay within the range my Dr. set. So far, I've been taste testing powders and the "Star Six" with 25 gm. protein from Walmart (chocolate of course) is my fav. Be sure to read the directions for the portions. I've been using it and trying to get up to 2 a day...almost there. My surgery date isn't set yet...but I am hoping for a date at the end of March and he's said that I'd have to do this the MONTH before surgery...so, soon it'll be on... I hope this helps with the drinks. Personally, I HATED the can stuff...ewwww, metal tasting. Both Slimfast and Adkins, couldn't stand them. Best of luck! :rose:

    Refered to Nutritionist now what?

I had to visit a nutritionist before my surgeon referral....it was an insurance thing. Personally, I think for me, it was a GREAT idea. I've been more conscious of what I eat, working on doing some adjusting PRE surgery that way when things are done I'm more successful with my new tool. So, as my Dr. & the nutritionist said...use this time to prepare for life after the surgery. Success is the goal. Good luck.

    New in Cali

Hey Kity...I'm in Redlands and hoping to do my surgery during spring break also...being a teacher, gotta plan these things. I'm waiting on insurance, so hopefully it'll work out. Keep in touch...I too am going to be 39 w/this surgery and hope things move upward.
  21. Seriously, drop the Dr. like a hot rock. My dr. wasn't the hesitant one...he told it to me plainly, bluntly, but...in his own kind & gentle way. Your dr. should be someone you can trust with things that are tough to face. In my drs' words to me..."I wouldn't say it if I didn't think you could hear it and face it" I refuse to go to a dr. that I don't feel fully comfortable with. In fact...the dr. I have, he was my 2nd at this particular office due to my dislike of the prior dr. I had at the same medical group. Find a dr. that YOU are comfortable with in all aspects. Best of Luck!!

How do I get mentally prepared?

Victoria, I too am taking that approach. Part of my pre surgery "hoops" was meeting with a nutritionist. She altered some of my eating habits and had me stop drinking with meals. Then once I met with the surgeon, I figured that since eventually I'd be on a pre-op diet of shakes, I might as well work my way into it gently. I'm hoping for my surgery in April (spring break....the teacher schedule). Hopefully by then, I'll have made some major changes and the band will just be another phase of the changes. I still eat regular food, but less, and altered. I figure these changes will assist me once I've gotten the band. Good luck.
  23. Well, hi everyone, this is my 1st post...I must say, what a thought provoking question. Well, my 18 yr. old self really isn't too far from my 38 yr old self, just in years, but not in spirit. I think though if the 18 yr old me would have known that her mom would be in the middle of Alzheimer's disease with no memories of their family, and her dad being gone shortly after, she might have taken a bit more time to remember & cherish the time together they had. Also, the 18yr old would be shocked about not having kids & not marrying until in her mid 30s. Otherwise...the planner the 18yr old was has achieved many of the goals she set out to do and loves every minute of it.
