Slow or No loss vs massive loss

Thats a bummer. I've read where some have had the scar tissue removed from the band and then went on with the bypass or even the sleeve. I'm keeping you in my prayers and wishing the best that all goes well.

    Unjury protien'd cheese sauce

I tried it, didn't care for the flavor. But that was me. Alot have tried it and seem to like it. Also read it is high in sodium. But, Unjury does guarantee their product, so if you don't care for it, you can return for refund.

Pain question - is this possible?

If the pain is in the left shoulder, as the gas does like to travel up to the left, it could also be your stomach which is on the left side under the rib cage. I would contact the nurse or your doctor to make sure there isn't more going on.

    Does it feel the same?

It is amazing how many band to RNY there are. My surgery will be 5/23 to remove it. Then have to wait a few months for bypass. One thing you said was "you failed the band". I want to think the band failed me or you as it seems to be doing with quite a few. Statistics are now even showing this, as it is having a great failure rate. The doctors, I think, want to blame us but such a big numer have been playing by the book yet something happens, so my question is there a big problem with this type of surgery and the doctors don't want to admit it because this surgery is $$$$$$$ signs in their eyes. So good luck as I'm in your corner cheering for a speedy recovery and a fantastic weight loss for without any complications.

Slow or No loss vs massive loss

Mine comes out (lapband 5/23) after three years and I didn't have any problems with it, new doctor discovered it slipped. Really think positive. By the time the bypass comes down the road it will be the third surgery and my surgeon never even brought up scarring. He definitely knows and probably prepared. But if you really want the bypass, and it can't be done because of the scarring, they would be able to do it with the one incision, if your doctor would do it. Right now, I am maintaining weight with a little loss lately (shocking for a slipped band) but will have the bypass done, whether with five holes or one large. So with good luck with your journey also, but I will add it definitely doesn't look like it will be an easy road for either of us.
  6. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, it does have to weigh heavy on your shoulders along with your father's feelings about the bypass. But in a Weight Loss Seminar last night someone asked about the percentages of death with all three surgeries. Actually the percentage was a little more than lapband (which has a larger failure rate and has to be removed) and think the sleeve is a little more than the band but less than bypass. But this was the shocker for me. The percentages of death from gallbladder surgery is even greater than all three. Also, it was stated that over 400,000 people die (world wide) per year from obesity related issues, so think those percentages are even greater than not having the surgery. In the end though whichever you chose, you are taking the right path. Good luck.

Slow or No loss vs massive loss

We also have a genetic predisposition from the caveman. Because of lack of food, extreme weather conditions their metabolism would slow down to conserve energy and that energy comes from fat. So even though they were consuming less calories they didn't lose weight or very little the metabolism was trying to keep them from starving to death. Thus, they stayed alive until Spring. I wasn't losing when I took my calories down below a 1,000 and was informed I need to increase it to restart the metabolism, it had gone into starvation mode just like the caveman. So you might talk with the doctor or your nutrionalist. Another freaky thing from my doctor (it takes me about three to four hours after waking up to want to eat) he said when we sleep the metabolism totally slows down, it has to be jumped started every morning. So first thing in the morning is some sort of protein whether I want it or not.

    Does it feel the same?

Loopy is the lap band causing the acid reflux. It is my understanding with the sleeve if you have this issue, you definitely will have it with the sleeve. Just an FYI

    Moms giving me cold feet

Went to a seminar last night, not that I needed to attend, just wanted to hear more information and answers to questions that were asked. My bariatic center actually does all three surgeries, but the first out of the box was RNY, lap band came second, sleeve came third. What the one doctor said that the RNY is considered the "Gold Standard" of bariatic surgery, as it has the longest history and a proven path. Just an FYI.

    types of multi-vitamins

Went to a Seminar last night and the question about multivitamins came up. What they (two of the doctors were there) stated OTC were okay except you have to take more of them. Baratric vitamins are actually more concentrated, where you don't have to take as many and are also made specifically for the malabsorption that we experience with bypass. Don't know if this is actually true or not, but don't think they were trying to sell theirs as stated something about Amazon. Hope this helps.

Aetna approval without 2 year weight history?

I have Aetna and I only needed current six months of Weight Management, meaning being weighed in and discussion about managing your weight through Primary Care Physician. Psy evalu, and seeing a dietatian (once). At know time did they ask for the BMI prior to this six months. I had a BMI of 40 with hypertension, diabetes, and mild apnea. This was for a lap band, but talked with the nurse (band is coming out this month) and she basically said there wouldn't be any problem with Aetna with bypass, just have to go three more months of weight management this time and still qualify with a BMI 37. The doctors office was the only one that wanted to know how many times I had tried losing weight when I had the lap band. (Lifetime).

    Moms giving me cold feet

D Jordan to your reply just want to warn you to always be prepared i.e. clean clothing always with you if you are out an about. Dumping will come on fast, when least expected, and a restroom might not near enough. As the saying goes, watch what you wish for as it might come true. Been there done that.

    Moms giving me cold feet

Had I done the research three years ago and known then what I know now, I would have never done the band. And I haven't had a bit of problems, not even now, knowing it has slipped. All I know is that I could have avoided another surgery because it has to come out now. My decision isn't based on other people and what they have gone through, but multiple people in controlled research studies around the world which definitely is showing that the band isn't all that it is cracked up to be on several points, including the failure percentage. There isn't enough clinical research on the sleeve yet as it is still too new, but the Bypass is the leader, hands down, as they have been doing the research on it and comparing it to the other two, but they do say the sleeve is too new to really get the valuable information, but it isn't looking that good either with what they know. That was my turning point to go with bypass.

How do you get in the req protein?

I mix the unflavored with sugar free crystal light (actually I get Wyler's as I buy it at Dollar General for a dollar a box) and mix with my water. Also, I get sugar free Swiss Miss Hot chocolate, and mix that with water and unflavored protein, but you have to make sure your water isn't over 130 degree's. I measure the heat if I can put my finger in it.. By mixing with water you get your water intake and it still counts even if it is flavored, I actually don't drink water any other way. With Hot Chocolate you are getting a little more protein as there is powdered milk in it.

Totally agree on research, research, research and then research some more. With that being said your research shouldn't be confined to the lap band forum, the RNY forum, nor the Sleeve forum and please don't get me wrong these are all good sites good information. Check Mayo Clinic, Duke University, Cleveland Clinic, UCLA, and the list goes on as these where the research is being done. I found a good one at WebMD. I thought three years ago I was doing the right thing. Went on the advice of my cardiologist about getting a lap band. Went to the seminar and that doctor convinced me the lap band was the way to go, so I did. It could be taken out, surgery and recovery wasn't as long and I thought there weren't as many problems. Didn't actually do the reseach, and now like a number of us on this site, we will have had or will have to have two surgeries, and some three because what we had done has failed. So do your research. I wish I had.

List of Band to Bypass Patients

SoccerMomma73, thanks for the heads up on recovery and the pain issues. It totally relieves my mind quite a bit. Have 22 days before they take the band out then 2-3 months for the bypass. Just like to know what to expect before hand and how much time I have to be off and have to put in for FMLA. Again thank you will have my heating pad ready

    Diabetes

I'm a type II diabetic also with my A1C's between 7.6 to 8.9. Last visit to doctor in March I discovered a pamphlet for the Omnipod. Totally different from the insulin pump. Love it, no longer five injections of insulin nor do I have to purchase two different types of insulin. Have gone from an A1C of 8.9 to a 7 trying for 6.5 or less. They have a website or you can google omnipod.com. Now in talking with my psychologist, doctor and the research I've done most type II's who have the RNY will probably not have type II either shortly after surgery and/or down the road. Research hasn't been able to figure out yet why this takes place but that is one of the benefits of this particular surgery. They are not seeing this with the band or sleeve. Can't wait until by RNY and then hopefully the Omnipod will go.

List of Band to Bypass Patients

With some luck hopefully it won't any worse than when I had my gallbladder and total hysterectomy. Was back to work in four days with the gallbladder and 10 days with the hysterectomy, Will have to take a wait and see attitude. With the removal of the band I would like to be to work on Tuesday after surgery the previous Thurs which would be six days. But will stick it out if it is too bad. The RNY might be a different story for a different day.

ideas for a Kitchen aid mixer

I can't help you with the Kitchen Aid, I somewhat quit cooking when my husband passed away. But you did bring a smile to my face about your remark about QVC. My daughter and the UPS and FedEx man have conversations about my packages that get delivered from QVC and HSN, which I find rather funny. They are always trying to guess what I have purchased now. So when you made mention of you were watching QVC while recovering just couldn't help but smile. Hopefully, someone will give you some ideas. I'm sorry I couldn't but you did make my day. Thanks.

List of Band to Bypass Patients

Hopefully Karma doesn't come around and bite me as didn't have any problems with the band, until now. As I said in my previous post it just has to be removed since it slipped, so scheduled for 5/23 at 1:00 PM. Will have to wait two months, per the doctor, three months per the nurse for RNY. So what I am hoping for is that I don't have a problem with RNY, such as the pain, and everything else that is being described. Everyone at work that has RNY, and there are quite a few, tried talking me into the RNY when I had the band. Boy that was my mistake. Now I will be having my third major surgery in three years and I'm no spring chicken, I'm an old roasting hen. Really enjoy reading all the post that way I get some idea of what to expect once I have the RNY. Thanks to all of you.

    Sick of Sleeve arrogance

Those that are arrogant in the sleeve forum or groups, I wonder how they will feel in a few years when all the research studies come in. I thought I had done the right thing when I had my band. The only thing I actually knew could happen and what worried me was erosion. How that I have researched this further, after the fact, I wouldn't have done it. So, since it will be removed in May, for three weeks I have been doing research on both the RNY and sleeve. What I have found long term RNY is the best and this is based on studies done. As far as the sleeve, they are basically saying it is too new and not enough studies have been done regarding complications. And for the band it is basically failing in the studies. So I would probably walk away from the ignorance with a smile knowing I did the right thing. RNY for me.

    Questions - Sleeve vs. Bypass

I was in the same boat as you. But I have had the band and wished I had done the research. Band slipped after three years and will be removed in May. For the past weeks I have been doing research on the bypass and sleeve. Finally I happened on two sites, one the Mayo Clinic and then went to WebMD. (I should state my doctor gave me the option of the two but I asked which he would recommend and it was the bypass.) WebMD will give the pros and cons of all three and that is what made my decision after reading them. Also even though my doctor said my band had slipped and had to come out, he did not even mention that a new one be put in even though he does lap band surgeries.

    Band to RNY..first steps

Onward to better things. Just got approved to get the band removed Anyway, have already started the steps for RNY and hopefully the doctor will live up to his word that I only have to wait two months after the band removal. Not that I am looking forward to another surgery, I'm not looking forward to not being able to breathe if I don't have it and put all my weight back on. Hopefully this 70 year old won't have too many problems.
  24. oldoneyoungagain

    Hmm. Weird. Almost offended.

I hope he apologized and he re-checked your medical records to correct himself. And if it had been me he would have done it in front of me. Surgery is no joking matter, not this close to the date. If I am preparing myself per his rules prior to the surgery then I want to make sure he is prepared also.

    lap band slip

Neither have I, nor have I heard anyone not having some problem with the band at some point. I never had a stuck episode, no vomiting, etc, etc I have just led my life as normal, went for fills and jokingly always said if it wasn't for the fact I can feel the port, I think I didn't have a band. So I am very angry that this has happened because I love my band and really not looking forward to two more surgeries.
