  1. Actually, my ex and I have Nigerian Dwarves. (The NDs are hers. The Oberhasli are mine.) We have one of the more successful ND herds in the country and have raised them since almost the beginning. Not sure how into the breed you are, but the herd name is Buttin'Heads.

I've thought about the gigolo thing but there's the whole disease issue. Really would prefer a sugar mommy (hell, I'd take a sugar daddy at this point if he's really rich and really old <G>).

    Tom

You are funny! By the way...we werre banded on the same day and have lost the same amount of weight!

  2. What a guy!

Speaking of which, if anyone else needs a "workout partner", I'm single. Just offering to help support the group, of course. :heh:

    Tom

    Cute Tom...very cute!!! :)

By the way...we don't know anything about you!! Your weight, a picture, age, where you live.... you are a mystery!!!! How about a little info for us gals!!! I am sure the other women on this thread will agree :heh:

  3. I think you mean BSR and not BMI. If your BMI is over 1300, you've got FAR more serious problems than the band will help with. <G> (40 is morbidly obese.)

    Tom

    HE he...yes BMR-basal metabolic rate

imagine if it was my BMI :faint: :faint:

As you may have noticed,,,when I am on the board i am writing fast and my fingers become sort of dyslexic...and I don't have time to correct the sp. errors...but you all have understood. But BMI and BMR are different!!!

  4. Ok so here it is.... I got two different results using two calculators online vs. the formula. The formula syas my BMI is 1,379. The calculators say about 1,557, I'll take the higher :)

I also calculated how many cals to maintain my weight of 194lbs..I need 2, 134 cals. I have been eating 1,000 cals or a bit less. so my deficit if I just round down to 1,000 cals(instead of 1,134) PER week is 7,000 calories!! 3,500 calorie deficit = 1 lb of fat (some muscle)

7,000/ 3,500 = 2lbs lost per week!!! And yes...I have been losing roughly 2lbs per week!!

Isn't this fun!! Go use that link to the BMR calculator Tom posted earlier. :D

  5. The test I had had me clip my nose and breath through my mouth into this machine that was hooked up to a computer. It actually measured the caloires I burned through "normal" breathing. Just as everyone's blood pressure, blood sugar, resting heart rate, etc. varies widely, I would think that would be much more accurate.

I did a Google search and found Basal Metabolic Rate and found a BMR calculator at the following site:

    http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html

It says my current BMR is 2341. (I tried a couple different BMR calculators and came up with slightly different numbers.) I put in based on my information at the time I had the actual MedGem reading. It says a little under 2700. I don't remember my actual number at the time but it was over 3000. Error on the side of a lower caloric need would be better. Remember 500 calories a day less than required equals about one pound of weight loss. In theory, I should be able to do absolutely nothing other than breath and consume 1300 calories a day and lose 2 pounds a week.

For more information on how the BMR is calcuated, go to:

    http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/Courses/ns421/BMR.html

Some of the things that affect BMR is age (older people have lower BMR), height (tall people burn more calories), body composition (the more body fat, the less calories burned) and fasting/starvation/malnutrtion (lowers BMR). So, if you're old, short, fat and not eating, you're actually lowering the number of calories you need. So, if you'd just get younger and taller, everything would be fixed. :omg:

The site lists two ways to calculate BMR. The easy way is the weight in pounds x 10 kcals/pound. A 150 pound person (which is NONE of us!) needs 1500 calories. A 300 pound person needs 3000 calories. The more complex method (Harris-Benedict equation) for females (different for men but since I think I'm about the only male here, I'll just do the female formula) is:

    655 + (9.6 x W) + (1.7 x H) - (4.7 x A)

W = weigh in kilograms (divide pounds by 2.2 to get kg)

H = height in centimeters (multiply height in inches by 2.54 to get cm)

    A = age in years

I don't know how tall Angela is but using 5'5" as her height, her age of 49 and her current weight of 195 she would be calculated as:

    655 + (9.6 x 195/2.2) + (1.7 x 65 x 2.54) - (4.7 x 49)

    which is

    655 + (9.6 x 88.64) + (1.7 x 165.1) - (4.7 x 49)

    which is

    655 + 850.94 + 280.67 - 230.3

Angela needs 1556 calores to breath if she's 5'5". (Just using the "simple" formula, it says she needs 1950 calories.) 400 calories is a pretty big range (almost a pound a week difference!), but based on the lower figure, if Angela eats around 1000 calories a day, she should lose one pound a week if she does nothing but breath.

Just for fun, I checked the number of calories burned during sex. Varies greatly on the activity! Here's a web site that lists your "options". It's kind of like an ala-carte "menu" but looks like if you had inventive sex daily, you could lose another 1/2-1 pound per week. ;-) Just remember that this is based on a 150 pound person (which I don't think is any of us!) so we'll actually burn a few more calories getting our bodies in motion. :omg:

    http://calorielab.com/burned/sex-calories-burned.html

    Have fun!

    Tom

WOW Tom!! Great research...just for your info :D ...I am 5'3"

Wheere did you get the 2.54 at the top line next to my height? I didn't see that nimber on the sample before? Imagine if I did alot more exercise...I could lose more! You know yesterday I did move more...all day... and tis morning I weighed 194!!!!!:clap2:

*** We'll have to have a Nov. bandster reuinion in a few months...what do you all think???

  6. One of the pre-surgery things I had to do was met with a dietician and have a Med-Gem reading. It's a machine that you breath into for 2-5 minutes and it determines the amount of calories you burn a day by just breathing. (The company web site is:

    http://www.microlifeusa.com/products_weightmanage.asp)

Basically, they wanted to establish the base calories used to make sure that metabolism was sufficient to make the surgery a success. Granted, metabolism changes, especially with weight loss, but it gives you a real good idea on caloric needs. The *ONLY* way to lose weight is to consume less calories than your body needs. If you're body is only burning 1000 calories a day, you'll gain weight on 1100.

Anyway, having an idea of your resting metabolism rate gives you a starting point for calorie counting. Add in calories for the various activities you do throughout the day and make sure you consume less calories than that and you'll lose weight. Roughly eating 3500 calories less than you need equals one pound of weight loss. (That's a reduction of 500 calories a day.) By exercising, you increase the number of calories your body needs. By eating less, you reduce the number of calories you take in. It's a win-win situation. It does, though, put into better perspective healthy weight loss. To lose 3 pounds a week, you need 1500 calories a day less than your body needs. If you're body only needs 2000 calories, that's consuming only 500 calories a day. That's NOT healthy.

My insurance did not cover the MedGem reading. (I think it cost me $50. It was done at Ohio State University through the dietary department.) Last April, my reading was approximately 3000 calories a day with just breathing. Evidentially, I have a fairly high metabolism. I'm sure it's slowed down since losing some weight, surgery, winter weather, etc., but that makes it a bit easier to lose. In theory, if I eat 2000 calories a day and do nothing, I should lose 2 pounds a week. (Since I'm eating FAR less than 2000 calories a day and I do some activity, I don't think this is exact, but does give an idea.)

    Tom

You can also get it onlune,,,do a search and input the info and it tells you your BMR Badal metabolic rate. I need to do it again since I have lsot weight.

  7. Angela, I don't think it's too tight. When I got my first fill, I felt MUCH tighter. After a couple of days, it was more comfortable. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks, I was able to easily eat more than I should. I stayed on track because of healthy food choices and will power. A girl at work (that had gastric bypass several years ago) has a candy basket on her desk. I've been indulging myself with a couple hershey kisses a day. Figure I'm better off having a taste or eventually I'll break down and eat the whole bag.

    Tom

I feel better...thanks! And I agree with allowing a couple of Hershey kisses a day or so...it does help keep you on track. The other thing I do is eat a Protein bar..low carb and the lower calorie ones Balance 100 cals in between meals...it gives me the nergy and the Protein and nutrition all while helping me with my chocolate cravings and sweet tooth :D And I find that eating every 2-3 hours keeps my metabolism up and my energy up and I still get only 800 to 1100 cals a day! I was talking to a friend yesterday and saying that I can't believe how much I was eating before without realizing it! I would eat I am sure about 2,800 cals on a good day and more than 3,000 on not so good days! Huge portions and never satisfied! I love my band and all of you who support the efforst we make!

  8. I did have a NSV at the doctor. I had bought a new sweater but wore an older turtle neck under it. Had to take the sweater off for my blood pressure check. When the doctor came in to do the fill I asked if he wanted the shirt off. He said I could just untuck it and lift it. He then commented about how big the shirt was on me. (And that's why I wore the sweater over it!) Last spring the shirt was feeling a bit tight. And his secretary, who is an absolute hoot, noticed a significant difference too. Remember your family and close friends are seeing you all the time. They're not as likely to notice a difference in your body because they're there for every pound. (Many of us look in the mirror and don't think we look that much older until we look at a picture from several years ago.) 20-30 pounds, a pound at a time, doesn't seem like a lot. 20-30 pounds difference between seeing you will be huge. I guess the moral of the story is that if you want someone to really notice, find friends you haven't seen in awhile. They'll notice! (I have co-workers that now work opposite schedules. I ran into a couple last week and they didn't know I had surgery but certainly noticed the weight loss.)

Now, to go SLOWLY sip my Breakfast. Can DEFINITELY feel the restriction. Had a small incident last night with my cream of (if skim milk can be called "cream of" anything) chicken Soup last night. Not a full-blown PB, but some sliming until it passed. I took 30 minutes to eat one cup but with a couple spoonfuls left, felt some tightness. Got the hiccups. It all passed in a few minutes. Not as painful as other times but definitely uncomfortable. Keep telling myself CHEW and SLOW.

    Tom

    Tom,

Congrats on your NSV!!!!:clap2: :clap2: :clap2: Are you sure your fill is not too tight? How long does it take to get where you can eat mushies and solids without PB'ng? I am a bit nervous about getting my first fill in february :D

  9. Thats great, i am not loosing weight right now. I lost 20lbs. 10lbs before surgery and since a total of 20 lbs. i haven't lost weight in 2 weeks. I get my fist fill tomorrow (nervouse about it) My surgery was on 1/4/07. Hope to be cleared to excercise.

    weight.png

    thanks!

You could have started exercising a few weeks after surgery...just no abdominal exercises until after 3 months. Good luck! :scared:

  10. I'm sure I should be doing MUCH more. Probably should easily be able to do the plan the trainer devised but I figure if I spend 15 minutes in the gym twice a week, that's 30 minutes more than I did before so I'm better off. I refuse to kill myself over exercise. I'll work up to where I need to be but at my own pace and the heck with the trainer. I figure I'll strive for the 15 minutes of cardio and one set on each of the weight machines. When I'm comfortable at that level, I'll add the second set of weight exercises and more cardio. I doubt I'll ever be a gym body. I'm not 20 anymore. I just don't want the skin that use to be stretched over my fat to hang there. And I want to have more stamina. That way if I do get picked up, I'll have the energy to do something about it. :heh:

    Tom

he he Tom you are too funny! I am single...but still hate that pick up atmosphere. I think one of the reasons I kept weight on for so many yeears was because I did not want that kind of attention... you know...sometimes some men just hit on you so they can --- i want a real relationship, I want to find my life partner.

  11. MAC...they are the Best!!!! I have an I Book from 2002 and it is running like new! The new ones are even better. You can do anything..photos, video, music, art, anything! No problems at all!!!! By now I would have had to replace my PC at least once or paid lots of $ to have it fixed. Macs are also very easy and you get free classes at the Apple store. Also free help anytime!:scared:

  12. Congrats! I was also banded on 11/7. I go tomorrow for a second fill and will re-weigh. I should be right around 30 pounds, give or take a couple. I've had a couple weeks where I went up a pound or two but have fortunately maintained a pretty steady decline. I'm sure my pleateau is coming but as long as clothes continue to get looser, I'm not too worried about the number on the scale.

    Tom

    Thanks Tom!

I have enjoyed reading your trials and tribulations of exercising the gym. You are doing great! I am trying to move without going to the gym...outdoors or at home dancing. I want to sign up for dance classes. I know I need to start using weights...but I do hate going there...maybe Gold's Gym is not as trendy and a pick-up joint like so many places out there... Where do you work out?

  13. I hit my first big goal.... 196 to make it 30 lbs lost!!!!:scared:  I had been in a plateau for a while... it is over! Slowly, but surely I am getting there!

    eating more calories helped and....

Of course a little Senna tea helped things get "moving"/// not even adding Fiber to my food and Probiotics has helped much in that department if you know what I mean.

  14. Hi fellow November Bandsters!

Been away for awhile, so happy to see you all are doing so good!! yay!

I'm on the treadmill for 30 minutes everyday and I feel reallygreat!

I'm finally at the 100 more to go mark!! Lots of NSV too, clothes are fitting great and I know I look better in them:o How could I not?:tired

hey I did finally figure out why I wasn't losing weight, get this- I WASN'T EATING ENOUGH!! :faint:Jeez it took me 4 weeks to get that one learned- Gotta eat at least 1200 calories a day! I just started it and I've lost 4 pounds this week!! It's hard though I feel more hungry now than when I was eating only 500-700 calories a day. :mmph: Go figure that one!!

Anyhow I am getting my second fill on tuesday the 30th well see how that goes!

anyhow glad your all doing well! thought I'd keep in touch

    karen aka kj

    KJ,

Congrats! How wonderful!!! I will try upping my cals a bit also!

  15. OK..I got my 2nd fill Tuesday. I thought I was going to be ok and I am hoping the first couple of days is just tighter. I can't eat! I am PBing...a lot. Not to sound rude and but here is what is happening... I cough...spit...choke and then a clear thick crap comes up. Not really much of the food. All I tried to eat was a baked potato and cream of wheat. I'm going to give it a couple more days. What do you guys think?

Brooksie, sounds like those foods are too dry. Try something smoother.

  16. I do weigh at home, but whenI am at the hospital I check my weight there. the norm is to deduct 2 lbs for clothing. So I am happier with the hospital scale which is accurate and the one used by new lapbanders and bypass patients. I wish I did not obsess with weighing every day!

I had an NSV today...I went shopping for household stuff and I thought...why not try on some smaller sizes to see what fits? I was using 20/22 dresses, blouses sometimes 18/20 if lucky. I decided to be bold and see where a 14W would fit or not fit.... OMG it fit!!!!! :faint:

  17. By the way the cost is $1,500 double occupancy, for 1 week, ALL inclusive, EXCEPT air fare. It includes my workshops and all activities at the resort which includes two trips a day to the deeper reef for snorkeling. The shallow reef is the resorts backyard.

It is so great one week will not seem like enough!

Flights leave from Houston and Miami non-stop to Roatan. Continental airlines and I think another one is starting to fly there also) It is a short 11 1/2 hr. flight from there and both airports(HOU and MIA) are easy to fly into from any city in the US. The cost of my flight last year cost around $550 round trip from San Francisco.

  18. Boy are you my kind of friend!:( I would love to go, I love the Carribean, ocean, sand, shell hunting, and most of all snorkling. BUT I am a self pay trying to come up with enough $$$ to get my lapband, maybe next year!?!? Oh yah, I am 49 also. :D Sunnysea Where is Roatan?

    Sunnysea,

Roatan is in the Caribbean off the coast of Honduras, part of what is known as the Bay Islands. It has one of the most beautiful reefs in the world. So great snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, lots of people to meet from the US, Canada, Europe as this is a top spot for diving and for European vacations. Still it is quiet enough and peaceful enough to relax! The town is lots of fun at night. Wish you could make it!

  19. I went to the doctors yesterday afternoon. Since my last visit about 1 month ago I had only dropped 1 pound, so he did another fill. Ok..the first fill I didn't feel anything. When he pushed that needle in and started digging around..I FELT IT! I'm pretty sure I he got it because I could eat last night. I even tried Tomato Soup. I didn't throw up all of it, but some came back up. This morning I am eating a packet of Cream of Wheat and it feels ok. I serious wonder if he hit the port on the first fill because I just didn't feel full. Plus, there was a big difference in the way he did this fill and the other. Anyway, I am thankful now that I feel something. I hope it works!

Brooksie...i am so glad you got a Good fill! :clap2: :clap2: Just remember to chew, chew, chew! I bought a baby spoon and a baby fork so I can learn to take the tiny bites. It is amazing how the brain adapts and thinks it is a normal size portion on that tiny little fork!
