family support - what to do?

but you can go out with them... if you are on liquids you can have soup... for example Chili's has Enchilada Soup. Get it without topping and eat around the chicken. not a good daily choice but i was able to work it a couple times in my first couple weeks post-op at business lunches. i even did it today since i am a day out from my first fill. i know with my own parents (who are also obese) i was able to quietly appease them in that first week post-op by joining them at the table and sipping my soup. my actions spoke louder than any words. by them seeing me being "normal" and not some drastic change in their eyes i think it has gone a long way in them being supportive. change scares people. that is why your dad came into your room. he is scared of losing a bond with you. you can bond while he eats his lasanga and you eat your soup. dad's aren't the best at expressing themselves when it comes to "losing" some of their connection with their daughters. i know my dad isn't.
  3. i just found out i need to fly in a helicopter for about 40 minutes each way four hours after my fill. we generally only go about 2500 feet up. i know that air travel can increase restriction -- but at that low of altitude should i expect it? i am actually flying in a plane 3 days after my fill -- but wasn't expecting 4 hours later! thanks... i will talk to my surgeon tomorrow before my fill and worst case scenario i will just do the 2 hour drive if i have to...but was wondering if anyone had experience flying "day of".

    another day of fill question...flying...

thanks! i emailed my surgeons office and they said no problem too. i love.love.love alaska. since the late 90s i have been backpacking around there every chance i get. most recently in october 08. snow city cafe in downtown anchorage remains my favorite place for Breakfast in the world. i am a homer spit girl at heart. i did live on sitka for 3 months my first trip, though.

    day of fill eating?

my first fill is tuesday morning. while my surgeon has not given me any instructions (ie. fasting), are there any rules of thumb you go by the day of your fill? -- i mean before it. i have a Breakfast meeting and i was planning on just grits. yay or nay? thanks!

    day of fill eating?

Dr. Bass in Hollywood did my surgery. I am really happy with the aftercare and support i am getting from his office. I went to the NWMC seminar last year and was turned off by the surgeon's attitude toward fills and success rate. I don't know if it was Wizman or not. Dr. Bass has done a lot of people i know through work (liberal insurance policy) and comes highly recommended.

    day of fill eating?

thanks! that is very generous of you. i just looked at your profile and see we are probably neighbors. in fact, my daughter was born at the hospital where you had your surgery!

    day of fill eating?

thanks. that is what i was trying to understand. i stride to live my life open and honestly. the reason why it is a breakfast meeting is because i knew i would not want to be at a lunch meeting after my fill. my staff knows what is going on and there is no need to explain anything as far as why i am or am not eating! thanks again.

    day of fill eating?

thanks. my surgeon has no day of fill rules. i know that already. i am really just looking for rules of thumbs, tricks of the trade, etc based on others experiences.

    day of fill eating?

that is exactly what i am wondering. i am eating about an hour before my appointment. that is why i was thinking about a slider food (grits) so i will not have much in my pouch... i don't know the science....

Quandry.. for air travel.. what to eat

someone in my support group mentioned taking a thin slice of ham and placing a thin slice of LF cheese in it and rolling it up and then wrapping it in saran wrap. they slice it into small pinwheels. they use this specifically for air travel. they said they freeze it the night before and by the time the peanuts are being passed out inflight it has defrosted and is a nice filling snack. i am going to do it with turkey next week when i fly.
  14. surgeon. both pre-op and post-op. there was a lot of discussion at the support group down here a couple weeks ago about how even the nutritionists in the same office serving the same patients don't agree among themselves. the surgeon is "responsible" for the gadget. he is king. lol.
  15. thank you! you too. i posted a reply to you the the glbt thread.

    Any November 2009 Bandsters??

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgendered Bandsters

hey timmers... i am sorry you are struggling with your sexuality. my best advice to you is to "just be". don't define it. be yourself. i think you ask a good question. our shrinks tell us that our weight is an indicator to some underlying issues. but as fat queers we are also dealing with the fact that we exisit in a community that is indeed image based -- be it thin guys or guys and girls who live within assigned roles that express their sexuality. so i think this compounds our issues. i say work on your weight. get healthy. find things other than food to keep you busy. the rest will fall into place. kind of related...i have a sneaky suspicion that my dad thinks if i lose weight i will become straight.

come out Come out Wherever you are.

where are all the queers? i am 37. female. live in south florida.

    Totally disgusted

your giving up after two weeks? come on... take a deep breath. go back to the pre-op lessons you got from your surgeon. i had my surgery 11/9 and i am right there with you. i believe what we are going through is what they call bandster hell. there are two things going on in my body (and probably yours)... 1. i was on a liquid diet beginning Nov 2nd and ending Nov 17. I lost 14 pounds during those 15 days. yay me. some days if i got in 500 calories that was a lot. since then i have started "mushies" -- so i am getting in whole foods and things like dairy and mayo which i didn't get before. so of course my body is adjusting to these things. i have jumped on the wii fit scale a couple times and i am going up about a pound or two here and there. and #2. now that i am more healed and the swelling since the surgery has gone down -- i have NO restriction. that alone is what makes the band "work". without restriction it would be very hard for me to get mad about my prediciment. i am trying to do the best i can with the little will-power i have. but i am also not beating myself up or going off the deepend at the pizza buffet. i read somewhere on here last week the following--- and i am keeping this thought with me: roughly paraphrased-- the two pound gain i am seeing right now is not going to affect the long term results and will not matter in a year when i have lost 100 pounds. one last thing. i threw out my scale. i am officially weighing myself and tracking my weight through my doctor's office. i will occasionally, as i mentioned, jump on the wii fit at my parents house if i am there for a progress check but i refuse to live and die by the scale ever again. weight watchers f-ed me up for years with the scale games and i can't do it anymore. hang in there. it will be ok.

    Scared and unsure....

i was recently banded. BUT -- 3 years ago i went to a seminar and when i walked in i knew i would have the surgery. when i walked out i had talked myself out of it. my only regret is that i did not have the surgery 3 years ago and how much my general health has suffered for it. there is no stigma to the surgery if you don't assign a stigma to it.
  21. Thanks! Just wearing the binder around my stomach has helped immensely! Personally, I think it should be a suggested item post-op to avoid this.
  22. i saw the surgeon yesterday for my issue with this. it is a pulled muscle and they suggested wearing spanx to keep everything tight.
  23. this is pretty much what i said. my daughter has spina bifida and had her last neurosurgery in late september so "surgery" is not a scary word for us. but...because she had a long hospital stay and i was home the next day after surgery she did not think that was "fair"! she is also comparing my boo-boos on my tummy to her boo-boos on her back. she also kind of went off on me last week when i asked her to pick something up for me... she aske me if my inability to bend over would be "forever" --- with the tone and attitude that a 4 year old going on 16 can only pull off. i have not brought up weight. everything in our house is about being healthy.
