Pill crushing - Ideas needed for taste
nkara replied to hmarko's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon and nutritionist told me I would never be able to take whole pills ever again... so I'm going to be doing some crushing since I can't take liquid. I would say mixing with a little bit of yogurt or applesauce? -
Banded Yesterday, Vomiting today
nkara replied to Dana36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the previous posters... pain meds and anesthesia can cause vomiting. Sounds like you have a surgeon who is right on top of things...... Here's hoping it doesn't last and you make a fast recovery. -
your not supposed to be eating like that already... I was told my post op diet will be 1/2 cup Protein then vegetables then carbs... eating seperately and drinking 45 mins after you've eaten not during your meal. Your supposed to be eating healthy not waffles.... (don't mean to sound rude) Do you have a nutritionist you can follow up with?
-
wow you can eat that soon after? My doctors recommendations are clear liquids//full liquids//pureed and then mushies.... I don't get to eat till probably 6 weeks post op! I'll find out my date September 30th so looking at an October date for surgery. So happy your doing well and keep up the good work.

Erykah.... Any surgery is risky but the gastric bypass is a more invasive procedure. Of course with the lap band you have the risks they just aren't as high. Death is one, band slippage, vomiting, malnutrition etc are all risks ... ask your surgeon what the risks are and see if they can give you statistics from his office on them.

I am so glad I logged in today. I was going to ask this same question. I have 4 lbs to loose prior to meeting with my doctor to schedule the surgery. I will be calling tomorrow to make the appointment and I'm hoping that I will have a few weeks to loose the weight. I know 4 lbs doesn't sound like much but I have an awful time loosing. The reason why I need the surgery. Anyway with the liquid diet how many shakes do you drink? Is it the "full liquid" the nutritionist gives you?

there is a website called Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks! and you can order samples of all the protein powders. They also offer recipes. I personally haven't tried them yet but the nutritionist recommended it.

Dont know if my BMI is high enough
nkara replied to hannahbeth's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every insurance company is different. Mine already had proof of me trying to diet by going through the doctor supervised Optifast program last year. I actually ended up eating to gain 25 lbs to qualify for the surgery. I was 40.5 BMI when I went to the surgeon and they submitted it to the insurance company immediately. I was approved and now I'm going through the testing. My last test is the sleep study which I have scheduled for the 10th and then I can schedule my surgery. Contact your insurance company and see what they say. My mother always said if they decline you always submit an appeal. Good luck! -
ROFL... don't eat the CAT! My recommendations are to follow the clear liquids for 2 weeks, full liquids for 2 weeks, pureed for 1 week and mushies for 1 week...... Call your nutritionist for more recommendations and see what they say. I have to see mine 4 weeks post op so hopefully yours will give you some ideas.

what kind of vitamins/supplements do you recommend?
nkara replied to angelic3432's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My nutritionist told me I would never be able to take pills again. Which I was pretty surprised about. Never even thought about that. But she suggested the Flinstones chewables and Viactive for calcium. -
Had the Psych Eval yesterday....
nkara replied to Lap Band Gal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree it is a stressful appointment. I felt like what could they possibly ask me for more than 2 hours? Well it was silly. Questionaire of on a scale of 1 - 6 stuff and then meeting with the psychologist to answer the same questions you just filled out. Are you really going to tell her "yes I hear voices"? come on now! jeezzz... I had to wait till the afternoon to meet with the pychiatrist who said I passed so I'm sure you did fine as well. Unless those voices in your head are saying differently! lol -
Are you allowed to have caffeine?
nkara replied to should_be_working's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I met with my NUT she said NO to caffiene initially because you are recovering from stomach surgery and it could iritate it. But once your back on a regular diet you can have 6 oz a day. -
OMG! I laughed through this whole post. Well don't forget you did have surgery on your stomach so it's inevitable it will cause problems with the connections there. lol My NUT recommended taking benefiber or such after surgery to stay regular but she didn't mention have diahrea. (sp?) I hope I don't, especially once I go back to work ... I can't always run to the bathroom where I work. Sometimes I'm stuck in a patients room for 4 - 8 hours! ugh!

I can't keep anything down..I'm freaking out.
nkara replied to MichelleBee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't had my surgery yet but the nutritionist told me once you have a fill you need to go back to clears/liquids for 48 hours so your stomach can heal. I agree with several other posters who said you had too much of a fill. Call your doctor and ask to be seem immediately. Don't let this slide for weeks or months if possible. -
Eating 800 or less calories is putting your body in starvation mode. Then your excercising for a long intense period of time so your body will not loose weight. It will hold onto what you have and also gain to protect itself. You have to get more protein and you'll do well.

Any Regrets After Lap Band?
nkara replied to sammy3552's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
there are positives and negatives with ANY surgery. All the material and doctors state that this surgery is NOT a quick fix. You still have to work at it. There could be complications as stated by one of the previous posters. You have to decide for yourself if this is what you want to do. Take all the research and decide if this will help you loose weight. It won't do it for you. Good luck on your decision. I have been researching this procedure for a year and I am having it done next month. I'm looking forward to a new way of life for myself and a healthy future. -
I'm going in for my surgery next month and my surgeon made sure over and over again to tell me it is NOT a quick fix. Your supposed to loose slowly. I wouldn't be overly concerned at this point. Slow and steady will win this race we are on.

I agree with muscle milk. I also would suggest BeBuff from GNC. It's very thick chocolate.

Intro & lot's of questions!!
nkara replied to fallqueen's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm also just getting my pre-op appointments out of the way and the same as the OP I am 5'3" and weight 231. I have been dieting since I was 10.. literally have tried everything! WW, Jenny Craig, Optifast, Medifast, etc etc... I just can't stand the yo yo dieting and I'm willing to take the slight risk's associated with the surgery to be happy and healthy. I'm sick of food running my life and I'm worried about my health as I get older. Right now I'm 40 going on 41 in another 2 weeks so I want to gain control of this now. My family who knows about it is supportive. My mother and boyfriend. I honestly haven't told anyone else. I'm a private person and really don't care about what they think..may sound harsh but that's just me. I'm sure once I'm thinner and healthy they'll be going "oh wow... you did the right thing" but for now I just told the most important people in my life. I have also told people at work, I work as a CNA and will be out for probably 2 weeks and for the most part they are supportive. Asking basic questions but none of them have weight issues and I have researched this and I'm positive this is what I NEED to do. You will do great and so will I. -
After lapband removal, when do you feel "normal" again?
nkara replied to SUEB55's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
with any surgery you face risk's I just hope you all do well once the band is removed. -
When do you tell a potential partner (that will see you naked)?
nkara replied to steph_co's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Personally I don't think it's their business unless they straight out ask. It's not a big stigma that you decided to go with surgery to help you lose weight. Be proud of your accomplishments and they will too. -
I was laughing through this whole post. Thank you. I'm hoping to be banded end of September beginning of October and I was wondering what happens if it's that time of the month. Since I never know when mine is coming I can't plan on it. I'm feeling better hearing you did so well and didn't have alot of pain yet. Keep us posted!
-
I would also suggest GNC. They will take back opened Protein powder. They also are getting in new ones all the time. If you like thick chocolate they have a new one for women called BeBuff.
-
Had all testing done. When do they call you for next appointment to set surgery date?
nkara replied to jessicakolman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon works a bit different. I had approval from my insurance company before scheduling any of the appointments. I've had the chest xray, ekg, psych eval and now I'm doing the upper GI, nutrition and sleep study. Once I get those done they told me to call to make the appointment for the surgeon to go over everything. I would just give them a call to find out. -
Woot!!! You showed her.. I bet she gets winded after one flight! Skinny doesn't always mean healthy.
