I currently have a Lap Band and I just can’t take it anymore. I have stuck episodes to the point I pass out. I have gained 25 lbs in less than 6 months. It just isn’t working for me anymore. I have been approved for a revision to a sleeve. I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on Dr. Mario Almanza. Thanks in advance.

    Hi TM,

Chekc out A light Me in Tijuana. Seems in my researching they are a great facility. Mid ranged price and I know 7 people who have been there. You can join their face book page. I am saving up $$$.

I had my lap band for 9 years. Up to the sixth year I was living life and got down to 160lbs. One morning I woke up and when I ate I just started vomiting. I thought well maybe after something warm it would be better. That was the beginning of my hell. I had moved from Fort Lauderdale to Jacksonville so my insurance was different. They would not pay for anything that had anything to do with the lap band. So I literally suffered. My gastro told me to unfill my band and once I could find a surgeon here to do it I had it unfilled. I still vomited. Between my gastro, primary doctor and my bariatric surgeon they went through hoops with the insurance company because this was a severe medical issue. They wouldn't budge. I just ate at that point what I could get down. Fast forward. I was sleeved 8/17/18. I had my lap band removed and there were so many adhesions it took the surgeon and hour and a half to remove it. It had adhered not only to my liver but other organs. After he sleeved me he had an endo done in the OR and realized I had a hiatal hernia. He went to repair it with even more scarring because my previous surgeon cauterized my hernia instead of repairing it. I am telling you now that lap bands are 80% failure rate at 10 years. Its not to scare you. Its to prevent you from what I just went through. It was horrible. The pain for the first week was horrendous. My surgery that should have only taken 1.5 hours took over 4 hours and a half was just removing scar tissue. Anyone that gets the band gets scar tissue and the longer its in there the more scar tissue you will get. My surgeon refuses to even do lap bands anymore. I don't blame him and if I knew then what I know now, I would never get a lap band again.

Nightmare #425,657,800 - Bless your heart! what a horrible experience.

Please tell us how the band is working for you?

Hi I've just had a gastric band fitted and I didn't take the decision lightly. I hadn't heard any horror stories to be fair and only heard good things from people I know who've had it done as well as accounts I've read about. I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm in the UK. Here only 1-2% of cases end up with the band being removed within a year of surgery and this happens due to mistreatment of the band (not following the correct diet). I would say to you to do your research, ask your doctors lots of questions and make your decision based on that. Good luck with whatever you choose! X

Best of luck to you honey. In the US...not many Dr.'s are even doing them anymore. More and more revisions are being done because of complications.

BeachBish, I'm actually scheduled for revision surgery with Dr. Jorge Maytorena at Longterm VSG/WLS. I chose this doctor because I have a few friends that had VSG surgery done by him and have had great results. The cost is 4500.00 for 4 days and 3 nights all of which are spent in the hospital.

Where is he located? This is to remove the band and to do the sleeve all i the same surgery?

Hi, I am three days post op and I feel good. My surgery took 3.5 hours because my band has slipped and cause a lot of scar tissue. I have managed pain and no gas issues. My Dr kept me in the hospital an extra day because of dehydration. I'm having the no problems at all.

THIS IS AWESOME! I'm so proud for you. So you had one surgery all in one? Removed band and did sleeve at the same time?

  6. Yeah - It's a theory of "What they don;t know" with all the new procedures out there.
I was also told I'd have it for life. Did they leave your port in as well?
Dr's here in Ga. are no longer doing them as well. HUM!

Hoping your days to come will get better. Thanks for the update. I want to learn all I can.

  7. Hi,
This is my personal experience and I still have a band. Literally HATE IT! Looking into revision now.

Nope nope nope! Don't do it. The average weight loss is 60#. I lost the 60# and it stopped totally; I've now gained around 20 back and I'm MISERABLE!
No, it's not permanent but it is a SURGERY process...which means recovery, losing hair galore and eating A LOT of Protein which causes you to be constipated.

The majority of the time when you loose weight is the first year. When you go in for monthly or bi-monthly fills are are unable to eat for 3 days. First day is liquids, second day is mashed foods and third is back to soft foods.

When you eat, you must chew chew CHEW 30 bites each; if you swallow too fast your screwed and stuck before you know it.

YOU MUST drink at least a gallon of Water a day.

You must NOT drink carbonated beverages. Yes...you can have a few sips after you are totally healed.

You MUST not drink out of a straw. This causes gas in the stomach and esophagus area.

Many pills (antibiotics) must be cut in half as they will not go down.

If you eat warmed up chicken and it get stuck you will slime - (Spit up) a LARGE red solo cup of slime, spit, your eyes water, and nose runs. I thought I was literally dying my first stick. The slime causes tooth decay.

True, if the band is too tight it cause food too get stuck. However, if it's not tight enough your able to eat a little more & want loose weight. So find the SWEET SPOT they say... Okay today we find the sweet spot and it works well. Then you decide to travel 3 hours and the band then changes, so it's a viscous cycle.

    EVERYTHING effects the band...

Weather, mood, stress, climate change, traveling, stress, sweating, flying, boating.

When you eat it is VERY little and everything must be chopped tiny tiny. Your stomach continues to make HORRIBLY loud gurgling sounds screaming for food. You are FULL but it's not the the tummy full feeling...it's indigestion filling of being full. You will become SICK of Protein Drink after a couple of years because you live on them.

In researching I was hard headed and thought I could get thru anything and would be different form the 5 people that kept screaming - - - NO No no...I sure wish I had listened.

If your serious about the weight loss why not do something permanent and one time instead of like me...NOW looking to have a revision. Which means TWO surgery - one to remove the band then waiting 6 months before a sleeve or MGB.

Think long and hard - the media doesn't tell you all the good and bad regarding the band.

  8. Hi,

Can ANYONE give me information that has had a lap-band removed and converted to the sleeve?

Did you have two separate surgery's? Was the recovery about the same as the initial placement of the lap band?

Is your diet a lot different? IS your way of eating different as compared to the Lap band?

Do you regret having the conversion? Would you do it again?

    Thanks Much!
