    Any one in NW WA

I normally lose my weight in the latter half of the week. Weird. But otherwise lately it's been a few pounds, then wait a week or two, then another few pounds. William Young (at GHC) says not to worry until it turns into a month.

    RNY or Lap Band

A device to control a nerve associated with hunger. It can modulate the urge to eat, limiting it to specific periods of time. Saw it on a recent documentary a few months ago.
  4. Fun, isn't it. And even the loose clothes are more pleasant. I happen to like baggy -- boy wants room. I just invest in a nice, elastic mesh belt. I did buy some new shorts a month ago that fit perfectly, and those are now getting loose. I took a look at their size, and I'd gone from 48 to 42 in 4 months. I don't know what my current size is, but I'm guessing 40.

    RNY or Lap Band

At the time of my surgery on 30 June, I weighed the same as you (I'd already lost 40# during pre-op), and we're the same height. I'm now down to 258# as of this morning. Both and and RNY have their own, personalized hells. Unless you have (as was mentioned earlier) diabetes, there's little weight-loss reason to choose one over the other. There are, however, reasons to try the band first: easier revision to another surgery (sleeve, for example), don't have to deal with malabsorption, problems with internal sutures, fewer immediate complications, and longer-term complications can be mitigated by your own behaviors (not always, but significantly). Progress isn't necessarily as dramatic, but who needs drama? If you're a grazer, that'll more or less defeat any existing surgery. If you drink your food, same story. You'll need to eat solid food, nutritious food (not food whose only offering is energy you already have surplus of). You'll need to eat it in sensible portions -- enough to sate your hunger, but not so much that you vomit it back up. RNY can help you get over food content (via dumping syndrome), which band is entirely a portion control device. Grazing -- they're working on a type of pacemaker for that. In the end, all progress is the result of the work you put into it. You will suffer at times, but no matter the surgery you choose, it's worth the risk.

    best exercise

start easy.. I've been on walking, 2.5mph, since april. don't try to do heavy weights, even at weights you could handle last time you were a gym bunny. don't feel you have to run or otherwise kill yourself -- you will only end up going less often unless you're a masochist. the first goal is to develop a gym habit. invest in a music player (zune, ipod, whatever) and load it up with audio entertainment of your choice (mp3s, radio, aubiobooks).

I had some very cool tests done today

Excellent.. These are number my nutritionist's colleague (a personal trainer) didn't have. So.. the answer is that the ratio is rather malleable. That's very good news.

My entire family's like that. Northern european stock, huge meaty calves (mmm... jerky), thick necks, tendency to eat white foods and occasionally go out in the snow with little more than a contented look... Mild bouts of molesting the land and pillaging the sheep. Did I mention I really like mead? I started doing strength last night; it'd been a couple years. While on the leg press, I noticed my upper arms in the mirror and realized how thin they looked compared to before. Thinner than I wanted, but at least what was missing was something that didn't need to be there, anyway.

Depending on the type you get, Jerky can be a cheap (calorie-wise) protein-dense food source. I ate nearly 140g without going overboard on calories a few days ago -- buffalo chicken spiced, dried bison, elk, teriyaki turkey. Made a decent dinner. I couldn't find a dunk tank, but my gym offers (as expected) the electostatic measurement. I'm 3/4 in shorter than I was reporting. That could be age, weight, posture, or just a bad reading years ago. My weight, including 32oz of Water I drank when I woke up, was 268.8 (80# down from when I started my pre-op program). They measured my fat level at 29.1%, for a lean mass of about 190#, so through hydration and physical changes over the past 2 years, it's less than the 215# I was consistently reading before. Ah, well. So we've got a goal of 210#. *IF* I lose twice as much fat as lean, then 210# will put me at about 15%. If I continue toward 200#, I'd be "athletic" give or take surgery. But that ratio of loss is a very twitchy number. Using the numbers KartMan experienced, I'd need to lose an extra 20#. We'll see -- we at least know where I'm at now, and that's about 20-25# from no longer being obese based on the percentage bands my gym uses. Of course, BMI might say something different, but to hell with BMI :crying:

In unincorporated Mill Creek, wishing this silly plateau would get over itself. 3#/wk steady and now zero for two weeks. Really, just two pounds to get firmly below 270 would please me. Any good restaurant suggestions? Outback's been terrific with steak and broccoli, and Blazing Onion's chili has served my lunches well (and a lot of it for the price), but I'd like to venture back into ethnic cuisine without being served a mound of rice with a hint of meat.

    Odds of long-term success

This has long since turned personal. I question the propriety of airing it here.

    Anyone else bigger "down yonder"?

Knowing some folks in the business, it depends on the company.

For purposes of determining composition, BMI is going to be misleading. For example, if you have a higher-than-normal amount of muscle in a body about the same size as your neighbor with both normal BMI and composition, your BMI will be higher because muscle is more dense. Conversely, if you replaced all that muscle with fat, your BMI would be lower. BMI is nothing more than a density measurement, and there are healthy high BMI just as there are patently unhealthy normal BMI. You want to be targetting health, I imagine, and health is going to be more directly related to actual body composition. So my suggestion is as KartMan has done -- get thee to a dunk tank.

I had some very cool tests done today

I was a year in a managed weight loss program not too long before opting for surgery. I was consistently measured (via electrodes -- reasonably accurate if sensitive to hydration levels) to have a lean mass of about 215# (giving me 90# of fat at the time). If the dunk tank is consistent with that measurement (and I don't know how much they'd typically differ -- perhaps greatly), then a 10% body fat target would end up being nearly 240# total (my trainer was targetting me toward 255#). If the actual lean mass is less.. I'll adapt, but I wouldn't expect things to vary by too much. Of course the trick, as you point out, is to lose fat without also losing muscle. Given my height of 5'10, BMI would still have me overweight.

... Except that I'm completely disregarding BMI. No such goal for me -- I don't trust it.

I had some very cool tests done today

I had this done when I was 9. I'm planning to have this done in about 20#, when I hit 250#. That should give me a good idea of when I shouldn't be concerned about losing weight anymore. That is, it'll tell me what's "good enough", rather than set myself some unrealistically obsessive-compulsive goal only to discover my body's not interested in losing more.

    Anyone else bigger "down yonder"?

Not much of a surprise -- I was expecting it. But to be honest, the whole lot are hanging lower than they used to, to the point where I have to lift things a bit to keep them from getting wet at times. Needless to say, they've been getting more .. notice .. than before. Morale, among other things except my weight, is up. 75# down, 50# and plastics to go ;9~

    Prostatitis! Yeah...I said it!

Best to tell your doctor. There might be research around this he's not aware of, and other men in your condition could benefit from the suggestion of changing their diet for a few weeks. For all you know, it could have been a food sensitivity, neh?

    Odds of long-term success

Or maybe they just know how to direct google's expectations of what should and should not be cached, and for how long. That doesn't require money. IIRC, the wayback machine predates google. At least, that's my memory of it, seeing as it had history of old websites of mine from the mid-90s.

    missed the goal

And, to be sure, 1700 cal, low-carb/high-Protein, and 45 min daily walking got me down 40#, starting from about 345#. Hang in there, and I'm sure you'll be able to meet the requirement next time.

    missed the goal

You could buy coverage on your own. Not cheap, mind, and potentially unnecessary if you've enough extra weight to still be a surgical candidate when you reapply. Familiar with Marysville. We (were) regulars at Tulalip's buffet, which isn't too far from there. Actually, we were regulars enough we'd get comp from the hostess in return for critiquing the food quality. Kinda miss the place -- great food, some perfectly valid even now, but a tad pricey considering how much I can eat. She's now at Angel of the Winds, running the restaurant; need to go visit her again.

    Nasty Thing People Say

Do it! Something risque and utterly, utterly fantastic. Make your minions stand in awe of them! I'm not joking there -- small flash art doesn't cut it: everyone has those. If you're going to do it, make it true artwork :tt1: I've got two. I'm holding off on more until after I'm at goal and have any plastics I'm going to have. After that, time for something a bit more.. elaborate.

    Flintstone Vitamins??

I took 3/day. I compared them to the adult Multivitamin I was taking pre-op, and figured out how many I'd need to bring most things up to those levels. I liked the taste, actually. :scared2: I've now switched to the softgels.

My surgeon is an ass, now I'm discouraged

The band won't do much to cause you to lose weight; to be honest, my weight loss about the same post-op as it was pre-. It will, however, train you in portion control, which will help you to lose weight on your own, and to avoid gaining it back later which is where many of us have the biggest problems, and why surgery is a good option for us. If you're diabetic, I'd suggest bypass over band.
