  1. I am 10 days in and I am also suffering this pain. I am really paranoid that I have done some damage to my port

Me too! I'm paranoid that I ripped it from the muscle. No one tells us that there will be this specific pain. At least I know I'm not alone.

    How have your meals been?

Sorry to hear of your discomfort. I was pretty fortunate I suppose....hardly any pain at all! I just sat in the recliner in between walking around.....with a nice amount of Rx pain meds the first few days. But that was 6 years ago now.

What does your surgeons office say about the pain? Have they given you some pain meds? It is possible you're over doing it, lifting, etc and not resting up enough?

    Best wishes!

  2. Don't waste your time with the lap band. My surgeon doesn't even do then anymore. Read the band to sleeve forum for many more opinions on the band.

    @@AvalonNeeCee

So because you say your surgeon doesn't do lapband anymore, you think that's a reason not to get one??????

Who is your surgeon? Why doesn't he/she do them?

I find it almost comical you would post such a reply to someone who is asking for advice on HOW WE. ...THOSE OF US WHO HAVE IT, selected our surgeons. Some of us are very successful and HAPPY with our lapband results.

  3. My PCP recommended my surgeon. I then contacted his office and scheduled to attend one of his FREE seminars. Then visited with the actual surgeon about two weeks later. Felt really comfortable with the discussions and his experience. I think years of experience and numbers of procedures done would be 2nd and 3rd on my list of things to consider today. A surgeon who has access AND USES fluoroscopy for ALL adjustments would be my number one recommendation. I would NEVER recommend a doctor who still does "blind fills".

Sorry to hear you're in such discomfort.

I was one who basically had no discomfort from the surgical gas. My nurses had me walking a LOT. Maybe that helped me. I also had some good pain meds

What are you injecting yourself for/with? I never had to do that.

Why do you think you need to consume MORE calories 2 days post op? What is your post op "diet" consist of? I did a week of Clear liquids post op.....after the week of Clear Liquids pre op.

I hope you get to feeling better and just remember, this is temporary.

    Best wishes!

  5. Mo' Cowbell Marathon on October 4th in St. Charles, Mo.

This will be my first full marathon. I'm using the walkjogrun.net "Beginner Run Marathon Training Plan" and plan on somewhere around a 5 hour pace.

I'm at the end of the 3rd week of the 18 week plan. I've done 16 miles...once in the past, and this plan has you go up to 20 miles before the big day.

I was thinking of starting a "Fall 2015 Goal Run" thread. No matter what distance each person is doing for this falls goal "race", maybe it'd help us achieve it. We could each put our daily or weekly training runs on there. Any interest?

  6. Welcome to the other side and congrats on your surgery! It took me a few years of thinking about it before I had it done as well. It's been almost 6 years now since my surgery and I am soooooo thankful I had it done. Stick around and ask questions, read past topics/posts, and know there may be some hiccups or struggles/frustrations along the way, but you'll get through them.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! :)

  7. Sounds spot on to me. Two weeks of liquids post op for me too, many years ago now. Just keep sipping those liquids you're allowed to have. This is a very important time in your process, allowing everything time to heal properly. In a few short days, you'll probably be allowed to progress to mushies = HEAVEN! Don't worry about not having the urge to eat... It'll probably come soon enough!

Congrats on your surgery and best wishes on your success! :)

  8. Bandista, where do I find those links below your signature? I'm on an iPhone and when I go to your profile there is only "add friend" . "Send message" and "find content". Then there is an ad bar. I'm new to this and not sure what you mean by "signature".

Consider using the "full site" option on your phone if you can. The mobile site and app are lacking some user friendliness, IMO.

  9. ... I've been strict!! Counting, recording, .... HERES MY ISSUE! ......

    Day 1- 258.4

    Day 10 251.6

Really? Am I just being stubborn? Am I being greedy about losing the pounds? I've haven't even noticed a difference yet physically.

    What about all of you?

So what do you expect to have lost in the 10 days? What is your calorie deficit counting BMR/calories in/exercise?

Just off the top of my head, 7 pounds in 10 days doesn't sound too bad to me, considering everything you're allowed to have on your pre-op diet. I actually think it's pretty good!

I was on Clear liquids only for a week pre-op, but that was almost 6 years ago.

    Hang in there! :)

  10. I have lapband, so this may not apply to any other types of WLS that provide malabsorption (RNY, etc), but this is my experience.

A couple years back I did 6 months where I tracked everything...with a food scale for intake, and with a Heart rate monitor for exercise calories. Just wanted to do a little self experiment and prove to myself what I had always heard. Calculated my BMR into the equation and crunched all the numbers. While it was tedious and something I would never want to HAVE to do long term, it proved a couple things to me.

    1. 3500 calories was exactly one pound for me, over the 6 months.

    2. Eating more calories to lose weight NEVER, EVER, EVER works, for me.

    3. When I track everything....the numbers don't lie.

There were days or even a week or two here and there, where the calorie deficit didn't exactly match the scale. But over the long term, it all adds up.

  11. I have a Garmin 310xt, so I'm biased towards them....I often say its the best money I've EVER spent. When I first bought it over 2 years ago, I pretty much used it for cycling only. Now I use it for running, and some limited swimming. It has built in GPS, and you SHOULD use a Heart rate strap with it, although it works without it. Nothing that I'm aware of will accurately keep track of calories burned without a HRM.

My GF has a Fitbit Charge HR, and she really likes it.....FOR MOST THINGS. It does not keep accurate distance when she runs. Walking it's spot on when compared to a GPS unit. IMO, "activity trackers" are a good device for general tracking.

Fitbit makes the Surge as well that has a HRM built into it....but she took it back because it was too bulky for her.

If you wanna check out DCRainmaker on youtube, he reviews all of the various devices.

    My vote.......Garmin products....and ONLY with a HRM.

    :)

  12. .... I was down to eating no more then 500 calories daily......I was putting on weight every time I went back. including insulin resistant, 1 side thyroid dead from being destroyed the other side enlarged and put on thyroid med for 3 months prior to her sending me to WLS that I was prime candidate for this surgery. .......just wanted to share my experience I have lived on the medical issues of weight hanging on for dear life and increasing despite changing lifestyle diet I did 2 yrs ago ......

This is very interesting to me!

Even though you were eating no more than 500 calories per day, you were putting ON weight.

Then your endocrinologist sent you for WLS after getting your thyroid condition under control?

My question is, do you think your weight gain was JUST thyroid related? If so, why WLS considering you were managing calories to less than 500 per day?

If not, do you think the WLS has helped despite the thyroid issue?

    Thanks! And continued success :)

  13. You were banded today and you have some "pinch pain" preventing you from laying down?

I wouldn't think you have anything to worry about. That could possibly be where your surgeon placed your port.

I slept in a recliner the first few days. A heating pad and ALL the pain med's they prescribed kept me very comfy.

Best wishes on your new life! :)

  14. @@KellyKub

I read your posts from back in 2009.

You were ready to have it removed then, but haven't had an adjustment in 6 years?

Does your current surgeon use fluoroscopy to check your band when you see him?

When was the last time you seen him?

It's no secret you're eating too much to lose weight.....you didn't really need the doctor to tell you that! If I were you, I'd be considering a couple things. WHY isn't your band helping control your food intake? Also, where is a different surgeon if he isn't willing to help you?

Adjustment of the lapband is so important, IMO. Not something that is best done blindly....

    Best wishes!

I can only talk about my experience, but for me, not eating enough has never caused me to gain weight. It was just the opposite. The less I eat, the more I lose. Years ago, I tracked EVERYTHING for 6 months. Intake, Exercise calories (using a HRM), and it showed me exactly what I've always heard/read. 3500 calories equals a pound....one way or the other.

I'm not sure this holds true for everyone, but it certainly did for me.

Best wishes on finding what will work for you! :)

  16. I'm almost 6 years post op and still remember the first bite of mashed potato when I progressed to "mushies". So feeling some restriction when you've started solids doesn't surprise me at all. It's a learning curve to say the least, chewing correctly.

Not sure of your preop and postop "diets", but for me it had been quite a while since I'd had anything to "eat". You may find that whatever solids you are eating now, may cause no sensation in a week or so.

Your surgeon may have left some saline in your band during surgery.... its not that uncommon.

Just make sure you chew, chew, chew.

    Best wishes!
