    Sushi

I eat sushi several times a month. I do not eat the raw version of the fish, but I do eat sushi rolls. It depends on what kind of rolls I choose. If it's just the veggie rolls with carrots, cucumber, avocado and cream cheese, I can eat about 4 small pieces. If the rolls are the "fried" version with crab meat and some veggies, I can typically only get in 2-3 pieces. I have to eat super slow, like 30-40 minutes to get those in. We go out for Hibachi once or twice a month, and we split a fried crab sushi roll, and then we get the shared order of filet mignon/chicken/fried rices/veggies. I eat the sushi pieces wait while the Hibachi guy is doing his little show then I sip some plum wine, and I eat a few bites of steak/chicken, watch a little more of the show, and then eat some fried rice. It's one of the few occasions when I sip while eating. This dining experience lasts nearly 2 hours and that is the only possible way I can get in that much food.
  2. Any weight loss surgery is going to let you cheat it. None of them stop you from putting bad foods in your mouth. That part of weight loss is all on us and our mind. I literally have zero issue eating half a bag of cheetos, but I don't because that would make me gain. Any one of us can suck down a 3000 calorie milkshake, but you have to be willing to not do it. There are healthier options, you just have to be willing to make the right choice.

Remember, they operate on our stomachs, not our heads, so all the head hunger and bad habits are ours to break. The sleeve simply makes it a bit easier.

  3. Hi there, you honestly have to change your relationship with food. I can eat a lot of junk food if I want to, but I have to make the better choice. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy some stuff that a lot of people avoid because they can't stop eating it when they start. I don't have that problem. The post-op diet is not difficult to stick to if you want to lose weight. Also, I found that since my hunger was gone, I didn't have a problem eating protein first, and then veggies. I didn't have a lot of room for carbs so that's how I lost my weight so quickly, and never had a stall.

    Staple Question

They should be able to provide with the type, size, lot and/or model numbers and specifics that are listed on the box just like what is seen with sutures. Remember, the infections that happened last year were to be caused by a bad batch of sutures. For them to narrow it down, and say that was the cause, and to ensure they did not use any from that "batch" there has to be more description other than just a manufacturer name. These numbers and specifics are used when large recalls are put out for certain surgical products. Same thing goes for baby car seats, playpens, formula, even vehicle recalls are based on some sort of indentifiable number or model reference. Just my 2 cents.

    Scared, might have done BAD!

I know this isn't very comforting, but I had to take an aspirin the night before my surgery. I even have a clotting disorder that slows my clotting time significantly. I have to be given Lovenox to prevent clots, and a drug called DDAVP to help me clot, it's very counterproductive in my mind, but it's what the oncologist requires for me to have surgery. So, I'm not sure if he will change your surgery date due to one pill. Give them a call and make sure your date won't change.
  7. I agree with Stacy 100%. I absolutely kick myself in the a$$ for not taking measurements of my body pre-op. I had plenty of pre-op photos because I have never been camera shy even at 270lbs. But, I wish I could have measurements to compare. Also, for me, when I would have a bad day, I would check out my before pictures, and then my most recent progress picture, and it always cheered me up.

    Carbonated Drink question

It took about 7 days for my headache to wear off when I stopped my 40+oz coffee habit.

    Booze

I just waited because it was empty calories. I can't remember when I actually had my first drink. But, I know that on my September 15th follow up appt I did ask my surgeon this specifically. The only reason I remember the date is because it was my last follow up with him since he was set to deploy in October.

    I can eat too much...?

Everyone's specific anatomy is so very different obviously, and I don't know why, but men seem to "heal" or not swell as much as most women after this surgery. At least that's what I have found with all the guys that have posted, and that I have friended over at OH. If you're taller than her, then it leads me to believe that your sleeve is actually longer and may give you a bit more capacity than your gf. I agree with the slowing down and stretching it over 30 minutes. You find that by the 20-25 minute mark that you can't get in that same amount.

    Booze

I waited until after 3 months. I do drink wine, and the first time I drank it, yes I got buzzed, not drunk pretty quickly. Now, that has all changed. It's just like it was pre-op. I drink rum/cokes, and shots without issue at this point. I'm not a cranberry fan, but I have mixed coconut rum with some orange flavored crystal light without issue as well. For some reason, my surgeon told me to avoid red wines to begin with. I didn't question his reasoning. I stick with Riesling or this funky German white wine that I love a lot. I have lost my taste for most red wines, and that makes me a sad panda.

    Brain Stomach Disconnect?

I can totally relate. Unfortunately, for me at 11 months out, I still have instances where I make myself a fuller plate than what I can consume. It happens far less than it did 5-6 months ago, but it still happens. I have found it happens more when I cook a favorite of mine like chicken/rice casserole. I still eat off small plates, and out of smaller bowls to help avoid this issue. I find that when I eat out with my family or girlfriends that I still order a full meal thinking "hmm, I can eat that". Nopers, I'm wrong 95% of the time, and bring home leftovers LOL.
  18. Sounds like what I experience when I am sitting or laying and get up too quickly. It even happens when I am bending over at the waist to get stuff from the bottom shelf in the pantry. I've officially been diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension because my BP is now pretty low. I hope it resolves and you feel better. Great job on staying hydrated ! ! !
  19. If you can get some small plastic ware containers that you divide out your portions, I found that really helped me. Also, for full liquid stage, you can have sf puddings and custards. I bought the stuff in the box, not the snack packs and I used the little plasticware containers to freeze little portions. These are the ones I bought, and they came in super handy. I still use them for "on the go" stuff. They measure 4ounces which was perfect for the full liquid stage, and even mushy stage.

    Going Dr Shopping

Lisa, you are doing the best thing for your health. I agree that if you are not comfortable with an aspect of the surgeon's program then you shouldn't let him cut on you. I know that it is scary to research, and feel confident about a surgeon only find out that something is just "not right". I went through a lot of surgeons for my revision. I researched Alabama, Florida and Georgia surgeons and was able to get my revision here in Florida. Best wishes, and do what makes you comfortable.

    Heartburn scares me!

No, it doesn't mean that you will have acid reflux or have to take acid reducers for the rest of your life. For me, if I do have to take an acid reducer occasionally, for me that is better than the complications associated with the band or RNY. There are several patients that have had their acid reflux resolved with the sleeve. A lot of patients can and do go off their acid reducer in 3-6 months without issue. I'm just stubborn, and am not willing to have acid issues if I go off of it. I may cut my dose when I see my surgeon for my 1year post-op follow up next month.

    Question...

I counted them with the mindset that a carb is a carb. Grant it, I didn't really focus on carbs until I hit mushies, and found it super easy to avoid most carbs in general because I literally had little to no room for anything other than Protein foods. Net carbs is when we subtract the dietary fiber from the carb count. I never bothered with all of that. The few carbs I was getting in were mainly from cheese, greek yogurt, and some Beans on the full liquid/mushy stage. Miracle Whip, and other condiments I used had minimal carbs. Veggies and other healthy options I didn't fret over because I wasn't consuming more than literally 1-2 cut green beans, or 1 broccoli floret. For me, it was just too much "work" to sit there and figure net carbs vs. all carbs with fat and no fat, lite or reduced fat stuff. I guess you could say I was too lazy to worry about the science behind carbs, and stuck to the rules that were given to me by my nut.
  23. For me, it's a balancing act. Old habits could creep in, but I also gained 5lbs on vacation, and once I got home back to my eating plan, I lost it within 6 days. It's weird, and my surgeon told me to expect a 10lb bounce around up and down after I hit my year surgeriversary which is June 3rd. So I kind of see what he is talking about.

  24. My nut recommended 1500-1800 calories a day. Limit white carbs to 80grams, up the protein to 80-100, and stay low fat since I had my stupid gallbladder removed and can't eat full fat stuff anymore. I eat lots of veggies, and pita chips. I am finally able to eat avocados and peanut butter again so I think those healthy fats are helping me maintain. Since February 4th, I've dropped 13lbs. The gallbladder surgery sent me into losing again.I still have amazing restriction, and still eat by the rules 90% of the time, but sometimes I'll eat more potatoes, pasta or rice and some veggies at some meals just because that's what my body is craving. I've gotten over head hunger. I still make the best choice when it comes to snacks, but I splurge a couple times a week.

  25. Hey chickee, I'm 27lbs below goal. My nut increased my carbs, and calories. I have to eat a minimum of 1500 calories on average, and get in about 60-80 grams of carbs per day. If I eat fruit, I go way over that, but I'm still getting in about 60-100grams of protein. It's tough because I still lose a couple here and there. I have to honestly graze now to stop losing. I am even eating white carbs to stop the lose, my body is in overdrive it seems. I even had to quit cardio and heavy working out, and just focus on muscle building.

Congrats on getting to goal. Maintenance is tough for me. I found losing much easier. But, now I just eat whatever I want, and quit stressing over stuff. So, far I'm holding steady around 123lbs. I want to gain back up to about 128-130, but I think my body is comfortable right where it's at.
