    What to tell the kids?

I will be interested to follow your thread - I unfortunately have no wisdom to share. My boys, ( 6 yrs old) didn't notice until the night before surgery that I wasn't eatting dinner ( I had done 2 weeks of liquid, but they didn't notice until the last shake). I think you are wise not to share the truth about the band with them at this time. Wondering if you can say you are having your gall bladder out and your dr. wants you to lose weight first and by doing liquids for 2 weeks it will help? Not sure. Good luck!
  2. I had surgery earlier this month and just looked on-line on my insurance company website to check my claims. Shocking! 52K for my surgery and one night stay at NYU! It surely makes the 6 month wait, etc. all worthwhile, as I have not even put out a penny. I am grateful for this, but shocked, as I thought it was more in the 15k range.
  3. Wow, sounds like you are doing great! I was banded on 1/12 - I have been doing ok and looking forward to my first fill - which is on 1/13. Keep us posted!
  4. Not sure if this makes sense, but, I have had no, absolutely no hunger since my surgery on 1/12. I force myself to have shakes and try to have Soup, to get some nutrition. In two days I begin the 'mushies' and am worried that perhaps adding things I like and different flavors, will activate my hunger! I know I can't stay on liquids forever, but..if I am happy on it, will it be bad to not move forward? Anyone else experience this, and also experience the fear of adding foods?
  5. I am afraid I feel too good! Is that possible? Yest I was out with my kids sleigh riding, and told them I couldn't go on the sled this week. Well, an hour or so into it, I jumped on. Ouch! Mistake, but I only went once and think I managed to stay in tact! It is the weekend, and a long weekend, and while not at all hungry, I went out to dinner with my family and another, and ordered Soup and a glass of wine. I had the wine ( I felt it:tt2:) and half the soup. liquids for the liquid diet, right? I know that nutritionally that the wine is the wrong way to go, but...has anyone else had wine? It wasn't on the list of not to have. I have been 100% on liquids and am feeling great. Love to hear other stories! I've been losing about a 1 lb a day or 1.5 and I know if I add wine that will change, but on the rare occassion, is it ok?

    I need Coffee!!

My Dr. said no during preop, but post op ok to have 2 cups, but don't count it towards your water. I have only wanted one cup a day and am doing fine. I would ask again and get the exact reasoning.

    January 12th bandsters

Hi, I am feeling quite good. My wounds are healing, they are itchy as heck, but I know that is a good sign! I have only taken pain meds once, on the day I came home from the hospital -- so I actually feel pretty normal. I have been up and about, and caring for my kids as well as cooking and baking. I get tired standing for a long period, so I take a nice long rest afterwards. I have had NO, I repeat NO appetite. Weird! No temptations when cooking, and have had to ask my husband to try things as I am cooking so I season properly, etc. I finally had a bowel movement yest, and wow, I feel so much better. This morning I have had 2 already, so I think things are finally working better in that area! I am on the liquids until Thursday, and then can move to mushy. Wondering if my appetite will return when more foods are introduced. I had a broccoli Soup yest, which was good, but I could only get about 1/4 of it down. I have lost 21 lbs since the pre-op diet and will admit, I am obsessed with getting on the scale - - funny, because for the last several years, I have avoided it like the plaque! Hope everyone has a good day!

    Hunger Post-Op

Hi, I was banded on the 12th and am now 6 days out. I was extremely thirsty post op and was for 2 days. I have not yet been hungry and have had to force myself to have a Protein shake and broth. Seriously, it is so weird! I have been preparing meals for my family, baking cupcakes for my children's classes, and nope, not even one temptation. I have found it so weird to have to ask my husband to taste some food I am cooking to advise if I need to add anything! I suspect the tide will turn and at some point I will be ravenous, but for now, I am in amazement. I don't believe that there is restriction on my band yet, and won't see the surgeon until 10 days post op. I am feeling great and have shed 21 lbs since the beginning of preop on 12/29. Good luck to you and keep us posted!

    Cigna Insurance

Hi, I have cigna and I had to do the following: 6 month medically supervised weight loss program 2 years of medically documented being overweight recommendation of PCP to have weight loss surgery psychological exam nutritional assesment medical clearance letter from pcp ( different letter then the recommendation) Once that was done, I was approved in 3 days. Good luck! Don't get discouraged with the long process - it does finally go by, and here I am 3 days post op!
  10. I know there were a few January 09 surgery dates scheduled for 1/2 and 1/5 - - any reports yet? Hoping everyone is doing well!

    January 12th bandsters

Hi, I got home on the 13th at 11 am, and really felt well. I didn't do much, and had a 2 hour nap. I am not hungry and although sore, I can't complain, as one would expect some soreness after surgery! I am up now at 3 am as I think I have had so much sleep ! I am off all week and plan on taking it easy - I will be on liquids for 10 days then mushies for 10 more days. At this point, I have no interest in eatting, but made sure I had at least one shake yest.
  12. I am heading out now to begin the journey of the rest of my life. I slept very well last night and am ready for surgery! I am down ( haven't changed my ticker ) 16 lbs on my 2 week pre-op! Very motivating! If all goes well, I'll be back on-line Tuesday afternoon/evening, as I will be staying overnight in the hospital tonight! My surgery is at NYU with Dr. Ren.
  13. Yikes, this is something I am not at all familiar with....I've been constipated for 2 days  I am on day 11 of my 14 day liquid diet. I am not terribly uncomfortable, but just wondering what will happen if I am still like this on surgery day? Any thoughts or recommendations? Anyone else have this happen?

    New to Site

Congratulations on your amazing journey! You are inspiring to me! I have my surgery on Monday, 1/12/09. You must be thrilled and I can imagine you look great!
  15. Any former NYU patients out there want to give me an overview of what I will expect come Monday? I am anxious already about getting my surgery time on Friday night! Did they call you as expected, or did you have to call them?
  16. Hi - Welcome and good luck! I don't have answers for you, as I am having my surgery on 1/12. I did cheat once on day 3 of my preop. Just try to stick with it for the remainder, as it can only make everything easier during surgery and after. Keep in touch!

It is getting close now! Yes, the weight is just coming off, and is so exciting! No, I don't have my surgery time yet either, and won't until Friday night. I am looking forward to the weekend to get things in order at home and to set up my "nest" -- I have small children at home, so it isn't typical for me to be in bed, even when sick! I also have to find one of the 'lists' people have posted on what to bring to the hospital and pack my bag. This time next week, it will be behind us and the real fun part of the life long journey beginning! Can't wait!

    Lap-ban questions.

Good luck with your surgery and post op! My surgeon gave me a list of things to avoid after surgery and carbonation and straws are on the list. Can you call your surgeon's office to see if they have a booklet or list with this information? I am right behind you with surgery on 1/12. Please keep us posted on how things go!

    Medifast and Low carbs :(

It gets easier and you will feel better. I am on day 9 and am finding it so much easier than a week ago. I also seem to have more energy then ever, but if you asked me last week, all I wanted to do was sleep - ( after eatting of course!) Can you have crystal light or other no calorie drinks? I did find that having the liquids helped me feel like I was putting something in my stomach.

    Making my self at HOME!

Congratulations! What a great week you have had! I am so excited to read your post, as I have my surgery coming up on Monday, 1/12. Can you share how your recovery has been? Did you spend 1 night in the hospital? What did you feel like doing when you got home? sleeping, relaxing? I am of similar weight as you - - I am short though - -5'3. Can't wait to get the surgery over with and really start the journey! Please keep us posted and continued good work to you!

    Hello from Wyoming!

Thanks for your post! It is great to hear that those who are just out of surgery are doing well! What excercise are you doing? How were the first days immediately following surgery? Were you sleeping a lot, or were you up but moving slowly? I am having surgery next Monday and am trying to imagine what my week after surgery will be like.
