  1. Calories in/out is just one theory and actually doesn't have a lot of science behind it, despite that people are always saying it. I am convinced that a big reason bariatric surgery works is that it drastically raises Protein and cuts carbs, while increasing the feeling of satiety. That is a lot of mechanisms working together. You can cause your surgery to fail by reducing your Protein and increasing your carbs to pre-surgery ratios. In fact that is pretty much the only way to manage to eat a lot of calories with the sleeve.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but calories in/calories out IS a fair tool when it comes to broad judgements for the cause of weight loss or gain. It's at least as accurate as the BMI is for measuring overall health. That's not saying much, but it seems to be the barometer in WLS World.

I agree 100% that high protein and low carbs is key for weight loss. I've seen it work too many times in both WLS clients as well as non-WLS clients. Barring certain extreme medical conditions, high protein certainly never hurts.

  2. Clearly there is a miscommunication here. I was only saying I was puzzled because we all got fat from eating more calories than our body could process. To me that is the definition of over eating. The amount you ate may be different than the amount I ate, but it was still too many calories.

Clearly you may define over eating differently than I do. You may not have been a huge eater in terms of volume of food. But with the crappy high calorie fast foods and processed foods available today (like hot wings) it's easy to get fat without being a big eater. We can still take in way too many calories and get fat.

Ok Butterthebean we are was FAT ASSES wings were an example may had those once a month. Lol....

Let's back up a bit, if you don't mind?

First of all, I don't understand what you typed here, could you explain, please?

Second, could you explain how you became overweight if not by eating?

Maybe there is a disconnect here that we can fix to get on the same page.

  3. People don't always get over weight by eating! You may have...I'm really not understanding this group thought it was support; but I see some on here try and tear others down. "Typo"you think. I know my situation. Its ok if you don't agree really it is. I could go on but I will stop here for this is not the place for it.

My apologies. I sincerely thought it must have been a typo and was teasing to be funny, not hurtful in any way.

That being said, if a person is overweight it's a result of calories in versus calories out....overeating. You are right that there are other ways to become overweight, such as drastic hormone imbalances or certain drugs that cause weight gain. But those reasons don't land you on a WLS forum.

  4. Before we start January, I have a question, however. As you know, I aspire to be a runner. So would "STICK TO C25K LIKE GLUE" be in the right vein? It's measurable by the phone app, sooooooo.....maybe?

LOL....I think thats a fine goal.

Also....there's a C25K thread. If you can read it from start to finish before the end of January you get a free santa running beard.....almost new.

Deal! Only if I get the hat that goes with it! :)

he wore that hat while running a half-marathon you know. probably can't even wash it afterwards. I don't know..... :)

I know! Gross to actually repurpose, huh? LOL The beard would actually be worse, me thinks!!!! EEEK! ;)

  6. Wait. What? I hope this was a typo.

LOL I'm sure it was a typo. I know I didn't fat by accident! :)

I know I'm MUCH better off by trying to eliminate all carbs. It's impossible, of course...but by dramatically restricting them, I find I feel soooooo much better. And I am no good for the "just one cookie" thing, either...it turns into "just one MORE cookie" and never ends.

  7. Absolutely. Check out the first post in this thread. It seems to have mostly worked. Do you wanna start this next one? Just a brief explanation of how it works and we'll start a new year off right. Feel free to vary it up if you think of something that might help some new folks.

No, thank you! LOL You "da man" and folks look for you to do this it seems, sir! :)

  8. How do you measure body fat?

    I use biometric impedence.

As far as this months' challenge goes...well...it went. LOL Too many challenges and illness to accomplish much, but I am all revved up for January, so I'm not going to beat myself up about it too much.

Is it simply a new thread and we set our own goals like December?

  9. Fiddle - fat and muscle weigh the same, and why is the fat staying? At this rate I will be all muscle and all fat ........

True. A pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle.

But if you have an equal VOLUME of fat and muscle, the muscle will WEIGH more. This matters because a 200 pound man at 15% body fat will wear a smaller pants size than another 200 pound man at 25% body fat.

This is why I don't give a rip what the scale says. Body fat percentage is a true indicator of health and a lower percentage results in a smaller body.

  10. Excellent article! thanks for sharing it.

Actually we don't need to ingest any form of carbs - the body makes what it needs from fat, Protein etc. Ketones are actually the prime fuel that the body and brain prefer. yes fruits and veggies contain a plethora of micro nutrients that we don't get elsewhere - so they are great in that respect - in terms of fuel i will take lean Protein please.

Not from me - from my team of nutritionists at the surgeons office. From putting this into practice over the last few years - I tend to believe them ;)

I'm with you! Yes, the body will make what it needs from any of the three macronutrients, but firstly/immediately from carbs. It will only convert fat and protein if you haven't eaten in a few days or if you just completed a marathon. LOL

So bring on protein, protein and more protein, please!!! B)

  11. Ok some great feedback from all of you. I'm going to up my Water big time, look into my stomach acid level, and do a shocker day if I don't see any results in a couple weeks.

Final question, has anyone ever gone from gastric sleeve to 6 pack without any kind of plastic surgery? Like if I get my body fat down low enough and skin isn't too bad, can it ever get to that level of leanness?

Sounds like a plan! In answer to your question, it's possible. It really depends on the individual. The skins' elasticity is different for each person. That being said, it's easier to accomplish with resistance than cardio...and it takes time for the skin to shrink back, if it is going to. But it is possible, under the right circumstances.
