I can understand that. The thing is, it won't change her grade. She should be putting the same effort into her lecture final whether or not she is failing the lab. By this time, her grade is what it is, and her freaking out over it isn't going to change it. It is just like the people that want to make-up exams or other work. They don't seem to understand that their instructor isn't usually required to let them make stuff up. If you ask someone to let you make an assignment or test up, you try to fit into their schedule. You don't make them jump through hoops to find a time where you aren't in work or another class. I know, I should have told her that I would send her her grade when I felt like it. But this was the first time I had ever had anyone be that inconsiderate of me as an instructor and I wasn't sure how to deal with it. Plus, I have enough other stuff to do this weekend that I didn't feel like continuing to deal with her as well. It kinda makes me wonder about people's intelligence sometimes, though. I mean, really. Doesn't it just make sense that nagging or otherwise irritating or pissing off the person that controls your grade might not be the best idea? Or does it not occur to some people? One of my friends that also is a lab instructor had one of his students make a smart remark to him about how it was a good thing he gave them course evaluations to fill out BEFORE he gave them that day's quiz. He was quick to remind her that there were still enough quizes left in the semester that he could completely ruin her lab score if she really wanted him to. Of course, this is the same guy that took a guy's cell phone away from him, told the person on the other end that he would have to call them back, hung up, gave back the phone, and threw the guy out of his lab for the day.

My massive paper is finished. Now all I have to do by Monday is two take-home finals, a chapter of homework, and finish the grades for my labs.

Unfortunately, no. I have a box of tapes that I have to watch for my thesis. I have to have a preliminary abstract ready by January 12, in order to present a poster in February.

Stop having so many damn kids; population control, anyone?
anonemouse replied to Sunta's topic in Rants & Raves
My biggest problem with this movement is this: There are not that many people who are well-off enough to pull this off. The Duggers are an exception. They have the money to provide for 16 or so kids. Most people don't. Most families already have both parents working two jobs just to provide for a couple of kids. Even if a large family went without luxuries and just gave their kids the absolute necessities, it still wouldn't be possible for most families. If you are one of the very, very few couples that can do this, great. If not, you have no business bringing 18 or 20 kids into the world. Even just the necessities are expensive, just think how expensive it is for 18 kids. Doctor's appointments, dentistry (including braces), shoes, clothing, education, the cost of the large house you would need to buy (I don't care what you say, 18 kids will not fit into a three bedroom house), etc, etc, etc. Most people just wouldn't be able to do it. For those people, yes, they are nuts and idiots to have 18 kids. -
List Some Medical Reasons To Have Weight Loss Surgery
anonemouse replied to ProsperNLose's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
All of these are caused or made worse by extra weight: Stress on joints. My mom had to have both knees replaces, primarily because of her weight. High cholesterol or high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, especially if you have a family history of it. High blood glucose, even if it isn't high enough for a diabetes diagnosis, makes you a lot more likely to get diabetes. PCOS can lead to infertility and other health issues. sleep apnea, where you stop breathing in your sleep. etc. -
Other people's posts got me thinking: I am not sure what I should shoot for in terms of weight once I get banded. My surgery info said a good weight for me height is between 125-130. I am tempted to say, "Screw the scales," and just shoot for a certain clothing size. Scales have made me miserable in the past and I'm not getting banded so that I will be staring at scales for the rest of my life. I think I would like to be a size 10, maybe a size 8. I haven't even looked at a 10 since 7th grade. Thoughts?

We don't have ours up yet. We're pretty bad about waiting until right before Christmas. We once didn't put the tree up until Christmas Eve. Any wrapping gets done then, too. Of course, we've also been known to leave the tree up until Easter.

I was on it for an entire year. The NP that ran my program had me start slow and then weaned me off of it.

I don't think that's right, at least at most clothing stores. I experimented at several stores with this. I tried on a shirt in 1X in the Women's dept and then went and tried on the exact same shirt in XL in the Misses dept, and there was a distinct size difference at all the stores I tried.

I want to be able to wak through a turnstyle without having to wedge myself sideways. I want to wear a swimsuit that doesn't look like garden with a skirt. I want to be able to jump off a diving board without causing a tidal wave (it's cool when you are a little kid, not so much as an adult). I want to be able to see my bikini line without passing out from lack of air (bending squishes my fat into my ribs and diaphragm).

Stop having so many damn kids; population control, anyone?
anonemouse replied to Sunta's topic in Rants & Raves
I basically reiterate what I said in a different thread: There always have to be two people in every fight. It wouldn't be a fight otherwise. To me, a lot of this is like a 5 year-old saying, "She started it!" We don't like little kids doing it, so why do we? One person's bad behavior or badly expressed thoughts does not excuse another's. So yes, Sunta probably could have stated her thoughts in a more polite manner, but so could several people. It's strange to criticize other people's words when you (generic you, no one in particular) haven't exactly taken the higher road. And yes, that can obviously mean several people in this discussion. -
I used Phentermine, and I recommend it to anyone. All it does is kill your appetite. No diarrhea or anything. At the beginning, I had some weird nightmares, but I don't know if it was a side effect of the Phentermine or the Wellbutrin XL that I started at the same time.

I personally feel that this is how everyone should live. I think that if you deny yourself whatever you are craving, eventually you will break and eat way more of it than if you just indulged yourself and ate a small amount. Indulging yourself keeps you in a better place emotionally and you will be more able to lose weight. Now, I am not saying go out and eat whatever you want, but if you want a special treat, have it.

I can say the same about conservatives. You know, the people who are anti-abortion and pro-death penalty or pro-bombing. Or the ones who say that prayer should be taught in school, but get all up in arms if someone says, "Yeah, let's teach the Qu'ran." Or the ones that are all, "It's outrageous how much meds cost these days. Think of the old people!" And then they go nuts if someone suggests nationalizing health care because it's "socialism:eek:". No one is 100% consistant 100% of the time. It's part of being human. -
I misspoke in my message. I wasn't thinking and put "unbanded" instead of "not banded". Hope that clears things up.

I am unbanded, but I can tell you what my surgeon said at the seminar I went to. He said that they band was basically like any other mechanical device that is inserted into the body, and to expect it to last about as long. He said that anyone being banded should expect to have the band replaced at least once in their life, since it should last 7-10 years. Like any mechanical device, it can break down.

They made my university non-smoking this semester. Big signs all over the place saying, "No smoking within 25 feet of entrances." They also have little bus-stop huts scattered around campus for the smokers, since they aren't supposed to smoke on the walkways either. I love it. Before, you had to walk through a cloud of smoke just to get in a building. It was disgusting. There are still people that smoke on the walkways (wish people would learn to blow their smoke away from other people), but it is much better than it was.

Hoping to be banded in December. Anyone else have PCOS?
anonemouse replied to pennywise's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yet another cyster, here! I was diagnosed in January 2005. I went to the doctor because I had missed 3 periods in a row (not unusual for me). I had horrible cystic acne for years, but I never associated it with my ovaries. I was even on Accutane for about six months, with no major difference. I mean, it helped the worst of the cysts, but I was still having to take antibiotics to take care of the flare-ups. THAT was the biggest waste of money ever ($1,200 dollars for the first month alone). If I had known that birth control pills would have helped more, I would have gone to the doctor before I did. I was also prescribed Metformin, but I've stopped taking it. I was borderline prediabetic, but it gave me frequent hypoglycemia. It was horrible. The cure was worse than the disease, IMO. -
I posted an update on my process in another thread, but I also wanted to do a new thread because I have even more news! In the other thread, I posted this: Well, I just checked my email, and the coordinator from the surgery center said that she thinks my phentermine program will be fine. So now, I get to schedule my surgeon's consultation, psych eval, and nutritionist's eval. Hopefully, I can get all that done as soon as possible, along with the pulmonology thing, and have everything sent to insurance within a week or so.:biggrin1: This is all happening so fast all of a sudden. It seemed like it was dragging along, and now it is like whoosh!:faint:

I am not banded yet, but I hope this works better than the other stuff I've tried.

It is a shame that she can't smoke in her own home. But she is the one that chose to turn it into a business. As such, she is required to comply by the business laws. To me, it is no different than if she ran a small restaurant out of her home. She would still be required to comply with health code laws, even if the restaurant was closed at night.
-
I completely agree with it. I only wish more states were doing it. Personally, I don't care what people do with their own bodies. But when it can affect my health, you better bet I'll agree with the regulation of it. I only wish they would pass laws where people can't smoke around children, especially babies. They can't exactly get away from it. Speaking of smoking, I think a lot of smokers don't realize how much it stinks. I am very sensitive to the smell. I took a German class a few years ago. I sat in the middle of the room. This particular woman sat in the chair right next to the door. I was always in the classroom before she was, but even sitting several rows away from her, I could smell her when she walked in the room. She smelled very strongly of stale smoke. My throat would hurt every single day.

My surgeon (well, I hope he will be mine) actually said that in the seminar I took. He said something about how you will lose weight without trying (most people there were pre-RNY), but total weight-loss under a certain percentage was considered to be a failed surgery.

Next week is going to be hell. I have to turn in two take-home final exams, homework for one class, and send all the grades for my students to their professors. I have my psych evaluation in Nashville, TN on Tuesday, pulmonology clearance in Lexington, KY on Wednesday, and have to be back in Nashville on Thursday for my nutritionist evaluation and surgeon consultation. Those two cities are about 4 hours apart. Lots of driving in my future.
