my introduction
Hi Clever, and welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your depression, and all the issues happening for you right now. You want advice? I guess for a start, stick to the bandster rules. And my second tip would be to hang out here on LBT. This is a great place for advice and support. It will be good to know that you're probably not the only one dealing with some of these issues. Keep posting, let us get to know you!

To Spank or not to Spank
Hit, hit, hurt, hurt (because that's the idea), kiss, kiss. Am I the only one who sees this as totally bizarre??

I can't sleep...
Hang in there, Abby, this is totally normal. Remember why you're doing this and what brought you to your decision. You can do this.

Banded March 2, 2007
Welcome to LBT, and congratulations on your banding. I can't think of a better reason to get it done! I'm as old as a grandma, but I have a 14 year old. I wanted to get in good enough shape to do some fun activities before he leaves home.

The count down is on!
Hi, Fiona, and welcome! Glad you decided to start posting. You'll already know what a great place this is for information and support. Good luck with it all and let us know when you get your date.

Cloe, welcome and congratulations on your surgery date. I think it's a great idea having it done young. You have a whole new life ahead.

For Parents: How'd I do on a discipline issue?
That makes total sense. Don't you just love it? I don't mean the scary part when they can't be found, but the gentle, growing responsibility.

What Books Are You Reading Now?
This year I bought every teenaged kid in my sphere either Stranger in a Strange Land if they were older or The Chrysalids for the younger ones. Last year I bought them all Ken Oppels Airborne or Skybreaker, depending on what they already had. They all loved them, of course. They're all using the "g" word now.

To Spank or not to Spank
Parents who chose not to physically assault their children are bleeding hearts? Do you honestly think that if more people spanked their children there would be less dysfunction in the world? The most troubled kids I have known and currently know have been spanked (not beaten I hasten to add). One of the big problems today is that many children have lost their "attachment" to their parents and other significant adults in their lives. An unattached parent can spank till the cows come home and that child will still have no investment in trying to please that parent. And conversely a well attached child will not develop huge behaviour problems despite of, not because of spanking.

To Spank or not to Spank
I have a vehement reaction to "reasoned, calm disciplinary spanking" which in my opinion amounts to ritualistic abuse. It is very possible for someone who has not experienced abuse as a child to have strong objections to spanking.

To Spank or not to Spank
What does that explain and why? What are you suggesting about atheists when you say that?

For Parents: How'd I do on a discipline issue?
I think it's totally appropriate, Alexandra. If there is a lesson to be learned, it sounds like they had it by the time they were sitting at the table. The trampoline restriction is just emphasising the point. If it was me I probably would have made the restriction for one month rather than two. One summer month without the trampoline is plenty for them to get the point at this age. At this age a whole summer feels like a lifetime.

To Spank or not to Spank

I'm actually getting pretty close to hag age, but I just can't seem to kick my teenage garage rock mentality!

I aspire to be a hag one day, the revered, wise old woman from folklore.

MIL Problems
I agree with this. Just don't play. Also my personal rule of "when in doubt, do the unexpected" tends to change the balance of things!

Execution takes 2 hours, 10 tries, condemned man given bathroom break in the middle
Green, I wonder if you remember Iona Campagnolo, member of parliament for northern BC in the '70's, (currently BC's lieutenant governor). We were in her riding when we were doing our back to the land thing up north. She sent out forms to all her constituants, asking our opinion on the death penalty and whether we thought it should be part of the Canadian legal system. I filled in the "no" box and then proceeded to fill up the given space with my reasons. It wasn't long before I received form letter reply stating that she appreciated my input, however, she believed people elected her to exercise her conscience and not be "just a weather vane for popular opinion". WTF????? I wondered why she even bothered to ask.
