Food addictions and lap band!
54Shirley replied to Deidra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As far as angry about a food addiction, I am not. It just doesn't seem fair that's all. As far as me, Well ! I was banded 10-31-06. Lost over 120lbs., and was well on my way, to success, when my surgeon gave me a fill, had problems, and told me the band was blown.... It took 3 years to find another surgeon that would touch someone else's junk. Then under fluoroscopy , it was discovered that there was nothing wrong with the band,,,,, he just deflated it because it was the thing to do ! He figured I was to swollen. Now I start all over again. I'm very glad that I can. So it's not just 19 lbs. down.. I have been there and felt the success of knowing that this is possible. And yes,,, I will do it again... -
Banded yesterday... Is this normal?
54Shirley replied to REDsparkles11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all it was only yesterday, so use your pain meds.... Second it's the top of the stomach that is banded, so that is part of the reason. Your Port placement could play into that also. If that's where it is. WELCOME TO BANDLAND ! -
I can't eat chicken breast. So the Doc said eat the dark meat ! So on occasion,,, I do. Bread, Beef also won't go down. Today I had 4 oz of Fillet Mignon, and I needed steak sauce to eat it with. Anything Dry,,, I can't eat.

Am I losing it . . . my mind that is?
54Shirley replied to 123crod's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like you need to get out of the house to me. Also I can since a fill is needed. If you are working at home and taking care of this and that. You are able to handle more, and more that comes your way right? I'll bet ya you can... Honey you need to get out, find another group like you said. Volunteer your time at different meetings, and explain to some people how this band really can work for them if they do things the way they need to. It's a idea, you can think of others, but it's not a bad one. Find a reason to get out of that house is what I am saying. -

But you still have to put food in your mouth to live. That's what I believe makes it harder for the overweight person to lose weight. -
Food addictions and lap band!
54Shirley replied to Deidra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We are taught to EAT TO LIVE ! NOT LIVE TO EAT! at least where I had surgery.... I think that makes a big difference with WLS in General. If you can plant that between your ears, and understand that this is what we do now. You will be successful. That is my idea on the band. Addiction is there own persons nightmare. If you can handle it day by day. Then your doing O.K. ! -

Where is the Port?
54Shirley replied to LibraJennifer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you have 5 holes in you from the surgery right? Do you have a slight slit anywhere on the stomach area? If you do then my guess is that's where your port is. If you don't have one,,,,, then I can't help you. Hope you find it. -
9 months and 100 pounds later... what I've learned.
54Shirley replied to StormRoyale's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm interested in recipes. Email them to sstasevich@charter.net if you would. That way I can print them off. Thanks, Shirley. I'll take the enchiladas , and lettuce wraps. Whatever you want to throw in that isn't to hot or spicy I'll take. I can't hold the spicy stuff. Thanks, Shirley. -
Your Dr. might order some things in liquid form. I know because he did that for me. He also recommended a splitter, crusher, pill container combo. We have one, and got it on ebay. This thing is great, it's circular ( ABOUT THE SIZE OF A HALF DOLLAR) and they are stack able. So you use what you want. Crusher, or Pill Container, then eventually splitter. The Crusher is easy, you just put your pill in and turn the screw down cap, and it's crushed. Also sugar free pudding is a great way to take the pills. Crush one, and put it into a spoon of pudding. Swallow that, then take a regular spoon of pudding after. It works out pretty good.

decided to do the Atkins diet
54Shirley replied to Awkward customer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat 60 G of Protein Daily. I asked abut the diet, and he explained that to much protein is very hard on the Kidneys. It's best if left alone. Everything in Moderation. That's from a specialist. If you disagree, that's up to you... All I did was post this because of the outcome. -
Hmm...can somebody verify something for me?

Food addictions and lap band!
54Shirley replied to Deidra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ogh I'm not nockin it at all. I just say that you must eat food to live. That alone is enough to throw you off. So addictions are swapped sometimes. Since we have a addictive personality, we need to learn not to go to another addiction, just to keep you fingers out of your mouth. Some how, we have to understand that when we seek help for a problem. We can't let something else get out of control, before we have another problem. Hope that makes sense. -
Is this for real!!!!!!
54Shirley replied to guyguys1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you can't drink water (YOUR IN THE RED ZONE !) That's not good at all. You should contact your surgeon and make him aware of this. He might take some out for you. -
Food addictions and lap band!
54Shirley replied to Deidra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If anyone has had the experience of swapping one addiction for another. ie: food to alcohol Post it O.K.... This is really quite common for some people "NOT ALL". Point is these are people that have known addiction all there life, "FOOD" so when they get over the food addiction, lose a great deal of weight., they have already picked up another addiction. This way it keeps them from going back to their food addiction. The pattern continues. I have a son who has given up the bottle, only to discover that he loves to eat everything. He's 36, and has been very thin, and a very picky eater all his life. But the bottle was a great life to him. Now he totally loves food. I keep telling him, remember me! I no what a food addiction is... He agrees, he said he would rather be fat then a Drunk. I agree to that thought, but,,, I told him don't get to fat ! It's to hard to get off. He doesn't look fat, just thickened out. But still you have to watch... What's not fare about a food addiction "I THINK" is you need food to live, it's a must. So to tempt you every day is rough! Booze and Drugs are your own choice. You don't need them to live. I met a lot of people like this at Band Meetings. The one I will never forget was a man that lost over 400LBS. with the Band. He was also a memember of A A & N A. He was my first experience as to swapping addictions.. -
I have to admit I'm frustrated....
54Shirley replied to Sarabi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's when you have enough fills that you are not hungry, and it is all working for you. -
It comes both ways. But the one I am talking about is powder 2 scoopes/and Water. That is very cheap for the price. Just look around.

It takes about 6 weeks before they can give you a small fill to lock it in place. Protein shakes will be the best thing to kill your hunger. -
What Does Burping Mean For You?
54Shirley replied to cantdecide's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A hiccup means I had enough. A loud BURP ! means my pluming is clean... There is nothing hung up or stuck. So it's a good thing. -
Food addictions and lap band!
54Shirley replied to Deidra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The one key thing that I was taught, was to eat very, very slow. And of course chew, and chew. When I asked why so slow? It was explained to me that your brain has to get a chance to catch up with what you are eating. So if you chow it down, your brain doesn't even realise that you ate so much,,, so your still hungry. If you take your time. While you are eating, your brain will already be catching up. As a result,,, you can actually be satisfied without over doing it. Hope this make sense to you, because it does work. -
BMI - With or without Clothes?
54Shirley replied to ATHUDDRIVER's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My place shoes off, and pockets emptied. Then you can step on the scale. But never in the buff. I laughed, and told him now you have to account for these artificial knees (TITANIUM), and he did 5LBS...... -
For sure you will need Protein shakes. Go on ebay, and type in MUSCLE MILK, muscle milk light will also come up. That's what you want. A lady that I buy my supplies from, has them at $5.99 a jug That is cheap ! She has 2 flavors. strawberry Milkshake, and Peanut Butter, chocolate Blend. There GOOD, and you make them with Water. So pick up a SHAKER Bottle at a health food store or anyplace that sells protein products. Good Luck, Shirley.
