  1. Is this a fact or is this a solicitation for people to contact this group? Please post the site where this information was read from and a link for people to check it out.
  2. We have no waying of checking on the accuracy of what any member says.
  3. I'm a medical professional and the body burns Protein last. I think the key words in this thread are "free" and "advice." You get what you pay for and advice is just that; an opinion. Since people are anonymous, we have no way of knowing if people are what they say they are. Anyone "taking" advice that is not backed up by peer reviewed scholarly articles that shows current research findings COULD be taking a BIG RISK.
  4. Rockbandster, there is a way of politely disagreeing with people and not making them feel awful because they have a realize band. I am a medical professional and ALWAYS recommend that people who are having probelms with ANY band return to their surgeon. Many times people post a problem in the hope of getting support and advice before they see their MD. Telling people they don't know what they are talking about is insulting and against the rules of this forum.
  5. Please remember that everyone is entitled to an opinion. It's important to discuss ALL options with the surgeon before making a decision. Remember too that most information sessions given by surgeons are free. It might be wise to visit a few.
  6. I'm all for working to help those less fortunate but NOT by just handing them money. Oprah did a show that clearly showed giving a person money is nothing more than a short term fix. What is needed is more outreach programs, apprenticeships, trade schools, and scholarships. I am a big sister (Big Brother/Big Sister Program) to two young ladies and hope I can make a difference to them and for them.
  7. Please refrain from personal insults.
  8. When a member is banned he/she can't post on this forum. Occasionally, some members receive a suspension but those cases are few. All reported posts are read, investigated, and handled accordingly.
  9. My Dad was 50% Cherokee Indian and he believed every able bodied person should work, that everyone should speak English, and that illegal people in the United States should either be given the opportunity to become a citizen or get out. He's gone now but I think his ideals ring true today.
  10. Some surgeons believe the carbonation can stretch the pouch. Some say carbonation in moderation is fine.
  11. Now that the election is over I hope EVERYONE can come together and fight for the common good... and I'm not running for office. LOL. Peace!
  12. A gentle reminder to keep the attack off each other and on the topic... PLEASE!
  13. It seems you each want to have the last word... toss a coin. Your vote, as the votes of mine and others, will decide this issue on Tuesday. Agree to disagree and let the ballot do the talking.
  14. It's natural for things to "heat up" as election day approaches but let's remember to keep the focus on the debate and not make it personal.
  15. Lanakila, Thank you for posting your positive experiences with your surgeon. I'm sure this will be helpful to others who are considering using the same one.
  16. A lot of changes occur when the body is healing from surgery. People recover at different rates and men AND women both have hormonal responses.
  17. I hope the surgery went well.
  18. Just the vets who are doing another pre or post-op diet. LOL.
  19. There are some medications that can be prescribed if the problem is gall crystal or sludge. When you eat unhealthy for a long period of time (high fats), you're body is used to producing a lot of bile. Bile is released from the gallbladder when an excess amount of fat is consumed to help digest it. When you begin to eat healthy, more bile is stored than is released and that's when stones form. Consequently, it's common for people to have gallbladder problems when they lose large amounts of weight. In the medical world we look for the "FIVE F's" which are fair, female, fertile, forty, and fat.
  20. My posting is addressed to the following people: those who are thinking about being banded, those who are about to be banded, and those who are newly banded. While everyone has the right to post questions, concerns, and experiences, PLEASE realize that it is the position of Lapbandtalk that you follow the directions given to you by your health care team of professionals. If you find it too hard to stick to any of the pre-op or post-op instructions, CALL YOUR SURGEON'S OFFICE and ask to speak someone. Frequently, they have heard your complaint before and have ways of dealing with it. Thank you.
  21. If you're having a hard time on the puree diet, call your surgeon's office and ask to speak with the PA, NP, or dietician. Often, they will allow you eat 2-3 additional foods to get your through the hard times. Because every surgeon is different, it's best to call and follow the advice they give you.
  22. It's nice to see this thread is trying to get back on topic. As for me, I believe self-esteem is tied to many variables and one might me how long the person has been obese. I was fat as a child and adult and never knew myself as a normal weight person. Consequently, my self-esteem has always been fairly high. I would say my confidence level seems to increase the less I weigh.
  23. When you go for a fill you can ask for a local anesthetic before they give you a fill. If the surgeon can't find the port, ask for a more experienced person or ask if they have the ability to do the fill under x-ray. I would not allow a person to stick me more than twice and the PA's or NP's do more fills than the surgeons do.
  24. Heart burn and acid reflux (GERD) don't necessarily occur together but either of these symptoms should trigger a call to the surgeon's office for a check. They are most commonly caused by pouch dilation due to overeating. The treatment is a complete unfill, acid blockers for some people (nexium, aciphex, etc), and clear liquids progressing to soft and then regular. Diagnosis is made via an esophagram. You drink a small amount of barium (2 ounces or so) and stand in front of a screen. The "virtual" x-ray visualizes the barium as it travels down the digestive tract.
  25. Bumped up for those looking for a buddy.
