Hi, I had a gastric band many years ago which I had removed in December 2023. I have just had a mini gastric bypass. 4 days in and recovery is going well. No pain meds as I have not needed them since leaving hospital. Am now officially sick of all the little Protein rich Soups I made and froze before surgery! Am making a Thai Soup broth, to jazz things up a bit.

Surgery day buddies, mine is Tuesday too! 🙂
My surgeon only requires a pre-op diet for a “few days” prior, no specific number, so I’m starting now. I’m just supposed to eat light and keep hydrated… I feel like I’m doing something wrong, I’ve had myself mentally prepared for the 2 week liquid diet since I started this journey almost a year ago. 😂

    Favourite salad
bag of Brussel sprouts cut in half and two or three carrots cut in smaller chunks
put them in a bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil, honey, salt, pepper and chilli flakes if you like spicy, and then spread out on a single layer on a sheet pan
roast in a very very hot 250C (whatever that is is Fahrenheit, I’m Aussie)oven 14 mins then turn everything over and 14-17 mins on the other side. Until the Brussel sprouts are slightly charred.

In a frying pan, dice 3-5 rashers of trimmed bacon diced and cook till crispy. Drain and add it to the veggies ina bowl. Squeeze over fresh lemon juice to taste and crumble over some low fat feta cheese. Extra cracked pepper.
    it is moreish!

From what I know if you look at your BMI range, it is the top figure weight, say in my case, 78 kg. You now take your current weight, which when I started surgery was say 128 kg. Sorry I work in Metric but it works the same in imperial. 128-78 equals 50 kg. That 50 kg is my XS weight, so if mini gastric bypass has a predicted loss of 70 to 85% of the XS weight then it is 70% of 50 kg to 85% of 50 kg. I.e 35 to 59.5 kg is what I am expected to lose with the procedure.
When it comes right down to it from what I understand. If like me, you have been obese all your life. Then you will have thicker, heavier bones to support that weight, more skin to wraparound it and a larger heart to pump blood around your body, so that means no matter what the general BMI limit is it is not totally relevant and there has been some suggestions by bariatric surgeons that to aim for a BMI of 30.
BMI is intrinsically a flawed concept as it does not take into account, body muscle mass. You will know the example of the brick **** house musclebound New Zealand rugby player with no fat, looking like a crazy obese person on paper because they have a BMI of 45.
I am 52 this year, so I think I would be happy with something above the BMI range. Otherwise my skin will waft in the breeze! 🤣

I really love sheet pan roasted veggies. You can do a mix of sweet potato, Brussels sprouts, sweet onion, butternut squash, zucchini, beets, etc. Spritz with avocado oil and put a little bit of sea salt, or try a glaze with some balsamic vinegar and pomegranate juice. You can also try cooking green Beans in some chicken Bone Broth with a little diced ham for a healthier version of southern style green beans. I love making eggroll in a bowl, which uses a bag of coleslaw blend, julienne carrots, and ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. You can add ground pork for an all in one meal. I usually add snow peas, too, and mushrooms that my kids immediately pick out.

I’m over 5 years post op but remember the torture the first few weeks were. I was lucky to live alone and not have to be around food. Now, I can tolerate and eat anything. What you are feeling is normal and will pass, best wishes on your journey.

LOL The food rage is real!! I did 2 weeks of a modified diet pre-op (shakes and a small meal at dinner of Protein and veggies), then one week of full shakes only before surgery. And then 2 weeks of liquids only post-op. Needless to say when I was finally allowed food I wanted to cry. LOL I was also a little afraid to eat it! But I did and everything was fine.
In retrospect I'm glad I stuck so strictly to my surgeon's guidelines. I healed VERY well and that time on fluids only really taught me a lot about how I react to being hungry and how to manage being hungry. It also helped me understand true hunger from head hunger---they are not the same thing, but man can they feel like the same thing!
But for real, I was really cranky at times during those Fluid weeks and there were some short tantrums... 🤣
