Hello! My surgery date is 08/07/2023 and I'm very excited but also very nervous about getting gastric bypass! I'm wondering what are the most common types of complications and what are my chances of getting them? When should I call a doctor? Is the pain REALLY that bad after and do the doctors give you real pain medicine? Also any advice on where to find a reasonably priced nutritionist and therapist that deals with gastric bypass patients... thank you!

Also wanted to add my surgeons office provides both counseling and nutrition services for life, free of charge. They also required us to complete monthly online classes and 4 in person weigh in classes during the Optifast liquid diet. During that time we had to lose 5% of our excess weight or not be approved for surgery. I had to get an EEG cardio clearance including an echo, and a nicotine test, so lots and lots of hoops. Now that surgery is over, I have a phone appointment before I can advance to full liquids abd an in person class before solids, along with a two week, four week, six month and 13 month follow up appointments. If your office doesn't offer this, I would suggest scheduling follow ups on your own.

  2. I'm day 5 post op RNY and the shoulder gas pain is the worse. I'm weaning of the pain meds- just taking oxycodone when needed and will be done with gabapentin tomorrow morning. But tylenol every 6 hours still. Nausea has been bad, especially trying to get in the last 20 out of 60 grams of Protein. No hunger at all, so it's hard to get in everything they want you to. They do have me on two nausea meds as well.

I have written about this problem many times but no one seemed to know or have an advise that I haven't tried. With the foul smelling stool I have been complaining of soft-runny stools that are also pale in color. Everytime I go to the doctor and mention this they just reassure me that it's one of the side effects of gastric bypass. However, 3 weeks ago I was given a course of antibiotics (I had bacterial sore throat) and to my surprise, my flatulence was noticeably reduced and was never smelly again, my stools were of a normal consistency and color, and I managed to gain 1 kg (which is a good thing since I lost more weight than required)... this lasted for almost 3 weeks then gradually things started to return back to pre-antibiotic status... honestly, the bariatric team of doctors I'm currently seeing never seem to be bothered and unfortunately they're the only ones available where I live. Does anyone seem to know what could be the case?? My life is ruined by this I try to avoid people all the time as I have no control over my flatulence and smelly stools...

My nutritionist says that is a symptom of dumping syndrome. From eating to much sugar and carbs.

Wow, there's clearly more to this than I had considered! I hope to lose around 30kgs, I eat one small meal a day and will usually have one snack, I haven't counted calories nor do I know my MR, I rarely exercise (very sore joints), I have an exocrine disease and some of my meds are renouned for weight gain. I suppose I wonder if moving ahead with the operation will actually help on my circumstances.

I had this problem. I was unbanded 1.5 years ago and gained 150 pounds in that time. I ate very little and still gained weight. The nutritionist said it was too little and I was essentially starving my body so when I did eat, I essentially holding on to every calorie. I started the liquid diet 3/11 and have to have Optifast 5 times a day plus a meal and I've alresdy lost 16 pounds. I agree with the person who said it's not about how much. It's what and when you eat that matters. Trust the process. I will have gastric bypass on April 13th.
