  1. Lol the calorie deficit is going to my head, it seems! Sorry for the confusion [emoji16]

Long story short, had my first dumping episode and it suuuuuuucked. Thanks to soy milk! I'm so hesitant with fluids other than Water since, but decided to try a cup a Soup tonight for a savoury flavour. Pray for me that it goes well [emoji1787]

How is everyone else doing? I'm definitely having the 'head hunger' creep in. I'm lucky to live alone So I Don't have to prep food for anyone else. I can't imagine how tough it is for folks making meals for others!

Every time I pass/smell food I kind of have a little pang, but I can get over it. It's not forever, just for now. I was visiting a friend today, and when they brought out bread sticks and cream cheese to snack on - I instinctively thought to grab one. I didn't, of course, but it was crazy how quick that thought came and over rode my logic! This stuff runs deep in the subconscious, I guess [emoji849]

  2. Kim this is so cool! I'm definitely going to try this out.

So you guys, I had my first dumping incident this morning and I'm shook. It was so, so horrible. I woke up at 2.30 am with stabbing pains in my stomach, sweating profusely, extreme weakness and retching. I actually thought my pouch had burst and I was going to need an ambulance, the pain was that bad!

Thankfully it passed almost immediately once I went to the toilet, but man that was scary stuff!
The culprit was the soy milk I mixed my Protein Shake with, since it's all I had within 4 hours of the episode. It's the only thing I've done differently. I thought dairy alternatives would be fine and picked soy because it's so high in Protein. I had 200ml. The fact it caused me that much pain means I'll never gamble on skipping ahead in the food stages, anyway [emoji23]

An inconvenient lesson, but not one I'll forget!!!

I'm also not allowed coffee during the liquid phase, but wonder if it will taste ok, reading the thread!

Hope everyone is doing great [emoji3590]

Glad the surgery went well for you! Hope you are still doing fine. I'm at home and still doing okay. Getting liquids in is harder than I thought it would be. Mostly because my drinking sensation has changed a little but also my sense of taste has changed. I got a little breathing device for exercise. Apparently I like to hold my breath in recovery. I remember being yelled at, "deep breaths, Lisa" over and over. lol So, now I have my little device.

Are you at the hotel yet? Hope you have continued to have a good recovery.

How are the rest of you doing? Would love updates.

Haha no way, I remember being tapped a lot while they were waking me up, actually, so strange how little you remember!

I am still at the hospital right now, staying here for 4 nights total and then tomorrow I'll move to the hotel for 2 nights. They are really looking after me, which is a big help when you travel solo!

I had Water and sugar free apple juice yesterday, and now today I have lactose free milk and some drinkable yogurt. My tummy's not ready for the yogurt, it seems, so milk and water it is! The milk seems very sweet, I wonder is it my taste buds or is the milk here just different?! 🤷

Im making it through ok, the hunger is much more in my head as a sort of spacey feeling rather than in my stomach. Im working on getting enough calories in. I made a Decaf tea latte with fairlife milk which was nice. I was missing coffee!

Ohhh tea sounds amazing, looking forward to that stage! I will miss coffee too, once I get home, dreaming of some vanilla Protein milk in a decaff latte... All in good time! 😋

I went in for my surgery yesterday at 12:45. Waking up was a bear. I was in a lot of pain for a very short time and they quickly got it under control. I slept pretty good last night.

Getting my fluids in is taking some getting used to. They want me to do 2 oz every 15 minutes. I tried to introduce Boost and my stomach told me that wasn't hopping today. Lol

Overall, I feel surprisingly well for having surgery. I asked for an Abdominal binder, and it has helped me tremendously.

    Happy Healing!

I hear you, waking up was the weirdest sensation ever. What is boost, exactly?

When you say tummy binder, do you mean a tablet or like a garment you wear?

Glad you got some sleep! It's the best thing to wake up rested 😁

Aww thank you Lisa! ❤️ How are you doing today?

I'm all done and in my room now recovering. Have an IV in my arm, that has meds so feeling pretty fine. Waking up is probably the worst part, when you're so out of it 😂 Just trying to walk every hour and the gave me a little breathing test to do, too.

Excited to hear how it went for everyone else! ☺️

I'm traveling 4 1/2 hrs by car. It's not ideal, but I wanted to have the procedure with a surgeon who has done many of them before. I'll be thinking of you! Maybe we can check in via messaging. I don't like how this entire platform is public to anyone on the internet and not just Bariatricpal members.

Oh good point! Yes let's DM a bit to keep in touch.

I just got the pre op info today, with the liver reduction diet and the food stages...I am feeling like it hasn't really sunk in how life will look after this surgery. Trying to get my head in gear so that I'm not totally shocked by all the changes.

Is anyone working with a dietitian after surgery? I have access to an online nutritionist, but would probably like to work with someone who has experience with bariatric patients.

Will you have anyone traveling with you at all? I hope the flights aren't too tough on you while you are recovering.

My surgery time is 8:30am and I have to be at the hospital at 6:30. I am grateful for the early time.

No, I'm travelling alone! My family can't travel with me over the hols, but it's the only time I can take off for the surgery, so needs must. I am using a Medical Tourism operator, though, so I'll have transfers sorted and will have a patient care coordinator checking on me a few times a day.

That is brill that you have an early surgery. I'm getting so excited, now!

We're surgery twins! I'm having gastric bypass on the same day. I wouldn't have selected that day myself, but I appreciate that my surgery center held the date for me in November while waiting for my insurance to pre-authorize. Which procedure are you having? How far are you traveling for your procedure?

Oh amazing! 😁 Glad to find a surgery twin.

I'm having a sleeve. Hopefully keyhole, but I might need open, due to some scar tissue from a surgery when I was born. Im terrified of waking up and hearing they couldn't perform the procedure, so a bit nervous!

Im traveling around 4 hours away. I have to take a connecting flight, which isn't ideal but had to be done. How about you, how far will you be traveling?

Good morning, Cici. I have found that making Soups, straining them, and adding the Isopure unflavored Protein is saving me. Mostly I've done from scratch cream Soups (last night was carrot) but I have done canned chicken noodle (strained) with Protein, as well. I have tried almost all the sweet Protein Shakes available to me locally and don't like any of them. So, that is disappointing. If I Water them down or add some almond milk, they are better. Two days until I switch to clear liquid only!

I'm super nervous! I've never had surgery of any kind before so the unknown is freaking me out a little.

I hope recovery is easy for all of us and we meet our goals! I will try my best to get on here and give you an update after my surgery but before yours! Do you have a time set, yet?

I totally agree on the shakes, I find them really tough to drink! Glad you've been able to find a solution with the Soup and Isopure.

I'm nervous, too. I've not had a surgery either. I keep telling myself they do this every day, though. I really hope recover goes well for us, too! I'll be alone in hospital for 3 nights and then in a hotel for 2, so I'll try to come on here and update, too.

I'm not sure what time of day the surgery will be, I hope early so I don't have to wait around much! Did you get a time?

I'm in. lol I am trying not to struggle over here so I appreciate all these tips!

Lisa how are you doing with the pre op? Hope you found something a bit more savoury to enjoy a little!

Just a few days to go! Are you getting excited? 😁 I am SO ready to be in recovery mode, already. The waiting is hard, my heart goes out to folks who are waiting months and years!!! ❤️

  10. Thank so much folks, really appreciate the support here!!

Now that I've had a day or two to think it over, I'm determined to go ahead with this. I've done my research, I've spoken with the surgeon, I've spent 2 years making sure I know I'm making the right decision. It's time to take action. I get that my friend comes from a place of concern, but I know what I'm doing and I know what's best for me.

T minus 11 days to go! Getting excited now 🥳

  11. So I am all booked for a gastric sleeve abroad, self funded, on 29th December. I've told 2 people, one of my sisters and tonight I told a friend. Big mistake!

This friend has family members who have had sleeve surgery. But their initial reaction was to tell me about morbidity rates and how the country I was choosing was a bad one.

It was so upsetting to have them launch into this spiel without asking a single question. Not asking how I chose my surgeon, not asking what made me decide to go through with the surgery, nothing...just a warning to think twice about it.

They then tried to ask me when I was having it and I told them I wouldn't be discussing it further with them . As if it wasn't nerve racking enough to make this huge life decisions...a close friend having that kind of reaction is just so upsetting. Questioning myself entirely, now!!

Mines on the 14th. I'm so super excited. Been on liquids for about a week. My dr doesn't require that long but I don't want any problems. Tomorrow is Water day then surgery. Woo hoo!!! I'm sooo happy for you as well. Good luck to you!!!

It's official!😀 I am on for tomorrow the 14th. Been doing liquid diet since November 25th. I am so ready. I had prepped myself if it was cancelled. There was an omelet in my near future. Now it will be in the distant future but well worth the wait. Good luck and good health. Tomorrow starts a bright future!

Folks good luck with the op today!! (and sorry if I missed anyone!)

Can't wait to hear recovery updates 🥳

My surgery in 12/29 as well. On Friday I receieved a letter from Kaiser titled, "crisis standards of care declared by Portland hospitals." While they haven't cancelled any procedures yet, they may need to reschedule if the hospital can't accommodate me due to high numbers of patient's. Ugh, I have been in the program for 1 1/2 years and ready for my new journey!

With that being said, I am hopeful and excited. I begin my 2 week liquid diet this coming Thursday and pray I do not become too crabby. Lol.

    Best wishes

Ohhhh everything crossed that you go ahead on 29th! 1.5 years is a long wait. I hope the liquid stage won't be too hanger inducing lol. I'm super excited and hopeful for a whole new quality of life, too! we got this 😁

When do you start your liquid diet, if you start one? I am supposed to start on Monday, the 13th. I hate Protein Shakes and any sugar substitutes. So, that is the only thing I am really worried about. Going to the store to buy a bunch of Soups to strain this weekend. I wish eggs and bacon were liquid. lol

i don't start pre op diet until 3 days pre-surgery, so the 26th. Place I'm going say if your BMI is less than 50 - it's a 3 day pre op diet & above 50 is a 14 day pre op diet. Planning to stock up on broth! I heard there's a few nice ones. I also grabbed some clear Protein Powder to add to Water ( I also hate the shake style protein! drives my stomach mad).

Maybe if you drink the eggs Rocky style it counts as liquids? 😂

  16. Anyone mad like me & scheduled at the end of the month? Mine is happening 12/29, all going well!

Seems a strange time to put it, but I'm single & live alone. I usually spend the holidays feeling a little down, as all of my family/friends are coupled off & hibernating together. But this year I'm excited to use my time off to do something to change my life for the better.

I'm a little scared about travelling alone, but it won't be my first time by any means, so it's more the hospital stay that concerns me. Hoping I can meet some friendly folks doing our 'laps' around the wards 😁
