  1. Oh yes, I don't like the sugary drink once it gets flat either. I've tried to drink the zero sugar drinks but they upset my stomach and are very sweet. I enjoyed my cirkul but it isn't carbonated. My husband and my daughter eat a lot of fast food or highly carb filled foods, so I can understand when they think that you eat something weird. Even though they are supportive it's still very difficult to not eat or at least take a bite or 2 of it. I did get them to try the chicken meatballs and cauliflower rice and they liked that so it's a start. I'm really really trying to change my habits but I'm finding that I'm not meal prepping enough. I feel like I need to take that modo "a boy scout is always prepared' and apply it to my eating habits. 🤔

  2. I started losing my hair at 2 months post-op and it stopped after my dietician recommended that I drink an ounce or 2 of keifer per day which was at 4 months post-op. I did it for a month because she didn't tell me how long I needed to until the next month when I went back for my visit and I was only supposed to do it for a week. However, it seemed to reset my gut microbes and helped with a the constant nausea I was having.

I feel as though I can relate to what you've been going through. I've been losing slowly myself and they have me tracking all of my foods so that I am noticing how many carbs I am eating. My program suggests limiting carbs to 30 grams per day. I find this extremely difficult especially after the surgery because I get really tired after eating a higher Protein meal. I do meal prep. I take a cup of chicken and marinate it in different marinades, cook it and I freeze it in small containers so that I have Snacks or ready cooked protein for meals. I keep cottage cheese, boiled eggs, and string cheese or cubed cheese handy in the fridge. I have tried to change all my high carb foods like potato chips, ice cream, and milk to the high protein versions. I get the Quest high protein chips, fairlife milk, and if I want any ice cream I get the yasso greek yogurt frozen bars. My biggest problem is the vending machine at work. Cheez-its are my kryptonite and I'm just really lucky that the past 3 weeks they haven't restocked the machine with Cheez-its 🤣.

I have a hard time with drinking the no sugar drinks like diet coke or coke zero. Too many of any diet drink and my stomach is upset. Also, I'm having a hard time with drinking plain Water because I don't like the taste. When I saw the dietician this month she suggested that I get an infuser water bottle and it's helping. She told me that I needed to make sure that I was drinking enough water, reaching my protein goals, and try to keep my carbs as close to 30 as I can. She also suggested that I start doing some cardio every day 15-30 minutes.

I have lost a total of 60 pounds including 15 before the surgery. I still want to lose another 30-40 pounds and I'm 7months post-op. I've only been losing about 5 lbs each month since about 2 months post-op. I'm hoping to see more weight loss with the changes that I keep implementing. I was very discouraged when I started noticing everything that I was doing but my doctor and dietician were so supportive. They were very encouraging and told me that the surgery is my tool but that I would have to make some long-term lifestyle changes and the fact that I'm noticing what I'm doing and trying to make corrections that I was still on the right path. I'm sure that you will also reach your goals and the Hair loss will stop eventually. Once the hair loss stops you'll have a bunch of baby hairs growing in 😁.

  3. This happens to me, starting at about 5 months post op I mentioned it to the nutritionist and the doctor. I have found if I "snack or graze" all day and don't actually eat a meal, I'm ok for the most part. However, once I eat dinner I'm done for. The problem is that it feels more like a pass-out kinda moment compared to a "lull" in energy. It usually happens with a higher Protein meal about 15-20 grams. I've been hoping to find some kind of remedy to it, because my husband nor my work are understanding when this happens to me. My husband isn't too terrible but my work would absolutely fire me if I fell asleep at my desk.

  4. I still visit once in awhile. I'm still working on losing. I have found that I started drinking Fairlife High Protein milk all night long. So I've been working on controlling my carbs to keep them under 30 grams like my plan recommends. I definitely have made changes but more changes still need to be made. Now I have new challenges, such as if I eat a protein only or super heavy protein meal, I will fall asleep shortly after. Yup, much like that Turkey on Thanksgiving 🤣. I still have 35 lbs to lose to get to my goal. I am pretty confident that I will get there but it's going to take those lifestyle changes to get there.

  5. Thanks everyone. They actually told me to drink 2 ounces of kefir in the morning (to do an intestinal flora reset) and switch my Vitamins with Iron, to before bed. The kefir has been a life changer. I feel a lot better. The nausea still comes but not as bad and it's a bit later in the day. They also told me to drink more fluids because sometimes when we need fluids we might feel nauseous. This has definitely been a journey and of course it's on going. Thanks again.

  6. I haven't yet, but I see my doctor tomorrow so I was trying to get some feedback from everyone here. I didn't notice what I was doing at first. Thank you for your response it's a great help.

I am no expert but have you been checked for helicobacter pylori? And if you are not on acid reflux medication could also be too much stomach acid??

  7. Hi Everyone!

I'm about 4 months post-op from gastric sleeve (12/2) and I have started noticing probably in the past 3 weeks that I feel nauseous from about 10am to 7pm unless I eat. It's almost like grazing to be honest. I might have lost 2lbs this month which is also concerning. I have tried my best to get back on a schedule (eating 3 to 5 times a day) the past week but the nausea is really hard to deal with. I don't eat on my 45 minute commute to and from work but the drive home is absolutely terrible. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

I'm not really struggling with people mentioning my weight - thankfully all of my feedback has been positive.

However, I am struggling with the food addiction portion of the program. For a few days, I was feeling more restriction than I had been and I was forcing myself to finish my portion - even though I was full. The Clean Plate Club rules were kicking in - hard. I talked to my therapist and have turned that around.

It's definitely a mental game. And you don't have to see anyone you don't want to. If your parents are being stupid, stop seeing them. And I would recommend therapy, if you aren't already seeing someone. It really does help.

Yup the Clean Plate Club gets me now too. The weird thing is that before surgery I could have cared less, I would eat until I'm full. Now I make a small portion about a half cup size and I want to finish it all even if I honestly can't. I get a little depressed when I can't finish the last 2 or 3 bites. It's definitely a mental game. I'm just getting to the point that people are noticing my weight loss. I deflect it as much as I can or change the subject mid sentence again only if I can.

  9. I'm a little over 3 months out and I've lost 47lbs from my heaviest (32lbs from surgery date). People just started noticing just in the past few days. My husband of course noticed within weeks after the surgery even though my clothes still hid most of my weight loss. I tried to pay attention to all the non scale victories, like my ankles weren't swollen anymore, my shoes and slippers fit better, and my rings could fit my fingers in the first few weeks. I also was happier that my blood pressure was down and that my sleep apnea has gotten better and that happened almost immediately after surgery.

  10. After my doctor's office submitted everything it took about 3 weeks. I called the insurance company to find out how long it could take and they told me it could take 40-45 days to review which was about how long it took to actually get the approval in the mail. My doctor's office called after about 3 weeks with the approval.

  11. Yeah the same thing happened to me for about a month. However, now if I eat something that is high in fat like half and half or is breaded/fried like fried okra the same thing happens until the next day even with just a bite or 2. High fat foods now literally make me feel bad, body aches and like I'm getting a cold along with the brain fog. I've switched to low-fat everything now.

  12. I had parathyroid surgery in 2011 and I broke out with a rash all over my body a few days afterwards. I was able to get into a dermatologist and it was because they gave me IV steroids in recovery because I was dry heaving. The dermatologist told that it was because my body needed to be taken off them a little slower (not everyone is as sensitive to them as I am apparently). She gave me a 7 day dose of them that I had to taper off of and it cleared up within a few days. This was just my experience, everyone is different. I'm glad to see that you are going to go to Urgent Care.

  13. I constantly sip Water except for the 30 minutes before I eat or 30 minutes after I eat. However, I brush my teeth more often now. Almost every time I eat and before I start cooking. Why before I start cooking? I have a tendency to snack on the items that I'm cooking and having freshly brushed teeth makes me not want to put food in my mouth while my teeth are still minty fresh. If I can't brush my teeth, I use mouth wash to try to get rid of that terrible taste.

I'm 2.5 years post-op from gastric bypass. I think weight loss surgery can help make major changes to your relationship with food and eating, but it takes a lot of time and work to undo the habits and mindset you've developed throughout your life up to this point.

I had read that a lot of people experience changes in their tastes after surgery, and I hoped that would be the case for me but was not optimistic. I mentioned this hope to the psychiatrist during my psych eval for the surgery, and he kind of laughed at this idea and told me not to count on it. I've always been a picky eater with a long list of vegetables and cuisines that I wouldn't eat. Some people say that after surgery, food tastes different (e.g., anything sweet tastes too sweet), but that was not my experience, so I figured I wasn't one of the lucky ones whose tastes would change.

Well, fast-forward to now and my tastes have changed... sort of. It's hard to explain because foods taste the same now as they did before surgery, but my likes and dislikes have changed a lot. I used to hate seafood and now I love it. I eat all kinds of vegetables that I used to hate. I'm not sure if my tastes have changed or I just have more of an open mind, or maybe having to go through the pre-op liquid diet and post-op stages made me appreciate real food more when I reintroduced it. Either way, I'm eating healthy foods every day and loving them.

Before surgery, I loved watching cooking shows like Top Chef and Great British Baking Show. For the first several months after surgery, I couldn't bear to watch cooking shows. I hated even seeing food commercials on TV. It just made me sad and angry to see foods that I could no longer eat. But eventually, I got to a point where I could see food and cooking without the emotional attachment. I can watch Great British Baking Show and appreciate the cakes and Cookies they make without being sad that I can't eat them.

Once I got to the point of reintroducing solid food, I put a lot of effort into recreating "bariatric-friendly" versions of foods I used to eat -- especially pizza. pizza was my kryptonite, and before surgery, I could not get enough pizza. I could have eaten pizza every day and never gotten tired of it. After surgery, I tried chicken crust pizza, and making pizza with low-carb tortilla for the crust, topped with sugar-free marinara, low fat mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni. But I also started trying healthy recipes that I found on Pinterest, and eventually, I stopped craving pizza. I haven't had anything resembling pizza (even a healthy version) in well over a year and I don't care. If you put two plates in front of me, one with a slice of pizza and one with grilled salmon and roasted vegetables, I would go straight for the salmon and not even be tempted by the pizza. This is just wild to me because three years ago, I wouldn't have eaten salmon if it were the only food available, and I never could have passed up a slice of pizza.

Sometimes I feel like I'm having an out-of-body experience because before surgery, I couldn't imagine being the health nut with a refrigerator full of fresh produce and no junk food in the house, eating grilled fish and cauliflower rice and salad with fat-free dressing, but here I am. I am constantly finding new, healthy, delicious recipes. Every single day, I eat healthy food and think, "Holy crap, this is delicious!" I honestly enjoy food more now than I did when I was eating whatever I wanted with wild abandon. It took me a long time to get here, and I can't promise that you or anyone else will have the same experiences after weight loss surgery, but my relationship with food has changed more than I could have imagined.

I'm so grateful for your post also. I've been craving seafood like crazy, however I'm still having a hard time with vegetables. I changed from liking half and half to wanting fairlife high Protein lactose free skim milk. Before surgery I could eat grapenuts Cereal in half and half now that makes me nauseous just from the thought of it. Half and half smells like butter to me, it's really hard to explain. I'm petrified of eating anything fried because of how sick it makes me, before surgery I ate fried chicken strips almost daily telling myself that it was healthy..... While I still miss my relationship with pizza and fried chicken strips, I'm learning to enjoy my new relationship with food. I'm grateful for this forum because I can reach out to others who are going through the same thing that I am and I can talk through it or research it and realize that I'm not alone. That sometimes this to shall pass or this is my new normal.

  15. When I first came home from the hospital, there were all these pizza commercials on and pizza was my favorite food. All I could think about was pizza and cake. Since then I tried the ricotta bake and the no crust pizza and it subsided those thoughts, but I find that I don't like pizza/marina based foods like spaghetti and lasagna anymore. The sauce is very acidic to me now and I no longer crave it or want it. Also, I used to love chicken tenders and French fries, but after taking a bite, it made me feel so sick that I don't want fried foods or high fatty foods anymore either or half and half in my coffee or hot tea. I definitely went through a mourning period and am still finding my way through this journey.

  16. The weight loss won't just change you, it will change him too. He will likely see that you are losing weight and get insecure about your new found confidence. How he handles that insecurity is the wild card factor so to speak. Keep your head up and do what is best for you and your health, everything else will work out one way or another.

  17. I had my surgery 12/2/22 and I can only use Monk Fruit that doesn't have the sugar alcohols. I get nauseous with anything else and will eventually have diarrhea if I drink/eat too much of anything that has stevia or other artificial sweeteners. I can't even chew the sugar free gum without it upsetting my stomach.

  18. I tried to pay attention to the non scale victories during the my stall. While I knew that the scale wasn't moving, my clothes were getting loser, my rings were fitting better, and my slippers/shoes weren't nearly as tight. I got sleeved on 12/2 and I stalled at week 3 so I stopped stepping on the scale until I went to my monthly follow up (which was actually 5 weeks after my surgery last week) and I had lost another 2 lbs.

pizza is a favorite for me! In 6 months, I'm going to let myself try to make a bari friendly pizza with thin crust & turkey pepperoni. I don't think I could ever give it up completely and thank goodness I won't have to long-term.

Have you noticed that some of your tastes have changed already? I tried orange sugar free Jello today and it tasted like hairspray. Aquanet to be exact. Ick.

Pizza is my favorite food too! When I was able to eat purees, I made the ricotta bake with pizza sauce and melted some mozzarella on it. It helped relieve some of the head hunger/craving that I was having from seeing all the Pizza commercials.
