  1. Hi all , I am 6 months out , on Bariatric Pal Multivitamin ONE chewable plus 45mg Iron tablet , but it's still not doing it .I only had the tests done yesterday and first thing today the doctor texted and said you are very low on Iron .She told me to get in touch with my dietician for her to decide what's to be done , but I only have her e mail so don't know when she'll reply .
Has this happened to you ? what did you get told ? please don't suggest including more fruit and veg or red meat into my diet , as I am struggling with "ordinary" food going down as it is .
    Many thanks for reading x

Hi fed-up, I was told by dietician that iron should be taken with Vitamin C as it helps the absorption. That iron alone is very difficult for the body to take in. I hope this helps!

  2. Hi all, new here. Well, of course I've lurked here at times over the years but ran away every time.. A little bit about me, been heavy most of my adult life, managed to live fine keeping most side effects at bay. sleep apnea, use a machine, HBP under control with meds. No diabetes or other issues. Three years ago I hit my highest at 450 and as covid got rolling I started to exercise a bit more and watch diet a bit better. Then all the wheels started to fall off lol. Knees giving me some problems which then led me to find out I was bone on bone for both knees. So I continued to get better on the diet and switched to biking and rowing. Phentermine/Topiromate helped along the way and ultimately lost about a hundred pounds. Had to stop those though when I had an Afib incident. Kept myself in the 350 range but man has this plateau been tough. Doc has me on Ozempic, A1C was also starting to creep up, to see if that will help but it really hasn't done much. I'm ok with diet but still not where i need to be to lose another 75 pounds, which is my target to get knee surgery. I truly believe that once I get my knees fixed I can be active enough to aid the weight loss. It's tough now with the knee.
So why am I here.... well my Primary and my cardiologist have both said it's time to really think about surgery. They both feel there are too many metabolic/hormonal challenges to continue my same approach. I met with the surgeon yesterday and he's recommended a sleeve. I'm at my whits end and feel like I have no other choice, but at the same time I read these stories about GERD, Constipation and all these other side effects I turn around and say eff it, it's just not worth it. At least I'll die happy... I know, not exactly healthy, but I'm being honest...
I've started the process, have a meeting with Nutritionist next week and psych and Endoscopy are after that. Likely can't get this done until August so I have some time to reconcile in my head the future, but right now I'm a bit overwhelmed and a little defeated.
I'm going to poke around here some more, thanks for reading.
    Mark

Hi Mark. I was taking 3 hbp meds plus an upper dose of my heart med Carvedilol, which also controls hbp. I had my sleeve 2/1/23. I now am off the 3 hbp meds and lowered the dose of carvedilol. My Dr's are thrilled. I'm a slower weight lover but inches is another story. I first decided to do the sleeve in July 2021. At that time my eating and drinking instantly changed. I was 345. At the time of surgery ,2/1/23, I weighed 293. Now 266. That's 79 pounds. And since my haiatal Hernia surgery in August 2022 I've lost 38.75 inches body wide. I'm thrilled. You go for it!!!! B est decision I've made in quite a while. [emoji6]

  3. Congrats! I just had gastric sleeve surgery on 2/8/23. They found a hiatal hernia during surgery and fixed that while in there so recovery has been slower. Anyone else have a hernia repair during their surgery if and when they get it done?
I had to have my hiatal Hernia repaired separately as it was so extensive. I originally went in on august 16, 2022 to get sleeve but they found massive Hernia. 1/3rd of my stomach in my chest. So I had to wait until that healed all the way. Had my sleeve finally 2/1/2023. Doing well. When I decided to do this in July 2021 I weighed 347. I changed eating as I did research and at time of surgery 19 months later weighed 293. So lost 54 pounds before surgery I now weigh 266 so down 27 pounds since surgery. So a total of 81 pounds since process started. But also tons of inches! Looking for a surgery buddy to follow this process with...

  4. I know stalls are normal, but man I am getting pissed at this point. I hit 7 months on March 17th, but I have been in a stall for almost 2 months.
I have tried eating carbs then going back to no carbs. I tried upping the calories. I upped my exercise(and gained 2 lbs). I have no idea what else to do.
So what other things have worked for people to get over a long term stall. [emoji2959]

Have you tried calling your doctor? I hit a stall for about 4 weeks. Then started losing again. My doctor said if I hit a stall again that lasts over 2 weeks to call. There are things they can do or tell me to do to break the stall.

  5. I am almost 74. I had a lapband done in 2009 and did well, but had complications and they took all the saline out in 2012, and finally had the band taken out and getting ready to have the sleeve done sometimes in the last week in March.I remember everything about things to do to prepare and have most of everything ready for the 2 weeks liquid diet before surgery as well for the first 2 weeks post surgery. How soon will I be able to take regular medications post surgery?
Has anyone tried baby food during the purée stage?

Congrats on upcoming surgery. I'm 64 and had the VSG on 2/1/23. I'm doing well. My doctor had no restrictions on when I could take my medications. So I would talk to him/her and check. They started me on mine immediately after surgery in the hospital. I wish you well! xx

  6. Hi, I had VSG on 2/1/23. I'm down 27 pounds so far since then. I've had a stall of about 4 weeks. But back to losing. Prior to surgery when I started this process I changed my eating habits. It was 19 months from beginning to surgery. Anyway, I lost 52 lbs during that period so I'm down 79 pounds so far. I just thought I'd lose it quicker at first after surgery. I started out at 347, down to 266. I'm pleased with where this is going but thought it would be more, anybody share their 2 month loss? Thanks [emoji4]

  7. I just dealt with this with a irl friend. They were so excited to talk to a surgeon about surgery, got the booklet w the pre-op & post op diet & immediately said 'never mind' - he thought it was just magically going to work on its own.
He said had thought surgery would magically stop him from eating every 30mins & I told him you can do that w the surgery too. So I agree with this. The "tool" thing is important for people to realize it's not the magic spell they think it is.
And that is the truth! If you don't prepare yourself in your mind it will never, ever work... you already have to know you can't have 3rds at every meal and that there are more than 3 a day for some. Or that you may not have that issue but that you are going to have to start some walking. May be something else... but mind comes first. The rest for me has been easy! I admit I'm very early on in this. 2 weeks out but pre-op and so far a snap. Lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks. Makes long for when I can get some food to get more strength so I can burn a hole in the sidewalk....:)

  8. Just wondering if anyone knows if the 6 or 12 month diet plan would be waived if my Dr determined it is medically necessary for the surgery. I found out I have a brain disease that puts me at high risk of stroke. I’m worried my insurance Blue Shield of California won’t approve it without me doing some sort of failed diet plan first otherwise I’ve completed everything else and am just waiting on approval

It also depends some on when your Dr submits it. I have blue shield of California also. I only had to have 3 months of nutrition classes and they submitted and got approval. My problem was covid kept filling the hospital.

  9. How awful. Did you find out why this happened? What was the cause? My initial thought was muscle spasms in my back which I had when I was still in hospital (bought tears to my eyes). Surgeon said I was holding my body stiffly in response to pain & discomfort. For me it was swallowing - had a lot of swelling & could barely swallow a sip of Water the first 24/36 hours.

I haven't found the cause. I will ask my surgeon next week when I visit him and post here.

  10. Good afternoon,
My first time on a blog. I joined today, because someone I Know is not doing very well with her procedure and it has not been two weeks. It has been 18 months since my surgery and a little over 1 year since my corrective surgery. I am struggling with the mental aspect of what I went through and what this young lady is now going through. It terrifies me that she is going through this, and I have been encouraging my three daughters to have the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I am not so sure I want them to have the surgery now. Anxiety is through the roof. Suggestions please.
Did you and the other person have the same Dr.,and the same hospital? If so encourage your daughters to seek outside of your area if they can. And see if that helps. Or check and see what is causing yours and your friends problems.

  11. I had my sleeve 8 days night I woke up screaming because of pain. Which is something I never have done. I have an extremely high tolerance for pain. But my whole body ,from shoulders to feet hurt when I moved. I called a 24 hour nursing service I used and they asked if I had ibuprofen. I said I couldn't take that but my Dr said I could take my meloxicam rarely as it's only the 7.5 tabs. She said take that with a cup of hot chamomile tea if you have that or other hot tea if not seep it for awhile. Then she started looking up info on the sleeve and said this is something that can happen for up to 2 years. The reason I'm posting this is not to scare you but to say the tea and melxicam worked. I still hurt abit after 4 hours but I can move. So if any of you have a problem with this try that remedy if you can.

  12. Hello. I'm new to Bariatric Pal and am so grateful to have found this site. I am just starting the process to get the sleeve and would love to have a few pals to go through this with. I'm 100% sure I'm going to have the surgery. I just don't know the when yet. I guess that's up to my insurance and surgeon. I'm only on the first step, which is a seminar about the process. I've done a lot, and I mean, a LOT of research so I don't really have any questions, (not that I'm a know it all, just a Googler.) I would just like someone to maybe message when I want to talk about the sleeve after my nonsleeve friends are looking at me with that dead "you've already said this" look in their eyes. And I want to be supportive too!
    Fun facts about me:
    I'm 36
No kids, want em, don't hate em
I have two cats I adore, Tony Danza and Morgan Freeman
    I Like to grow tomatoes
I crochet stuffed toys, but not clothing
I'm afraid of centipedes due to one fateful evening involving one in my pants
I love cheese and will never give it up but am willing to negotiate moderation
I have a lot of weight to lose and am 100% ready to lose it and more importantly I'm working on the mental reasons I got here to begin with.
    I'm friggin stoked!

Good for you! Sounds like you're in the right place mentally and all my docs said that was the most important thing. I just had my sleeve on February 1st 2023. I feel great, happy, thrilled even. [emoji1] you will too! Attitude will take you places. I've had more surgeries than most think about (in a family) and that has always been my go to. Do what it takes to get you where you have to be! Not would like to be, but HAVE to be. Use attitude. And congrats on your decision!

  13. Hi,
I'm 5 day post op and have ZERO energy. On a clear liquid diet until Tues, complete with a min 60 grams of Protein from shakes. I am now able to get 60-70 g Protein daily and drinking all the Water I can tolerate.. I also have 1/2 cup diluted 100% grape juice to get some carbs. Is it normal to be WIPED OUT even after naps and the daily recommended protein and Water? ? I almost feel weak like I have the flu but know I don't.

I'm 5 days out too. Maybe it's just because I've had so many surgeries but everyday I feel better. I slept most all of surgery day, Wednesday, Thursday came home and was exhausted. 2hr 45min drive. Slept 1/2 of Friday and since then I've been up, physically able to walk around some, and emotionally. I feel good! Pain is minimal and I think that's just the gas pain. I hope you can soon get to feel the "more than normal" that I've been feeling. I was just thankful this time they did the surgery. 3rd time we tried to get it done. Good luck and God Bless.

  14. I chose bypass because of a few reasons. Like many others I had bad GERD, but the other reason why that I’m naturally an impulsive binge eater / junk food addict. I didn’t feel the sleeve was the right tool long term to help me fight my demons.

Also, I was influenced by TV a little - Watching older DR Now with bypass v sleeve, just feels like bypass patients are more often successful v sleeve who can revert back so quickly to bad habits.
I know with me my doctor felt the sleeve was the safest. I have many health issues and I'm not a spring chicken so to speak. Lol. He said he truly wanted to help me and knew the sleeve would be a success whereas the bypass..... I might not make it. No problem choosing for me. He's been a terrific Dr. Just got it done Feb 1st 2023. But we've been working towards this for over a year and a half. For me it's unusual to meet a Dr first time and not see judgement in their eyes because of your weight. His was just kindness. So when he told me in his opinion the sleeve was it, easy choice!

  15. On February 1st I finally got my gastric sleeve! I guess the old saying 3rd times a charm worked. I've gone in 3 times to get my sleeve the first they found a MASSIVE haital Hernia. 1/3rd of my stomach in my chest. So fixed that. 2nd time they sent after waiting for hours because they had no beds. ( I have to travel 1 1/2 hours to get there) on Feb 1st we got it done. I'm home, with such minimal pain that it's wonderful. I hope and pray for all coming g up for surgery that you have as little di omfort as I have had.

  16. I got my date for February 1st. I've been quiet about it as this is the 3rd try to get the gastric sleeve, but I'm feeling good. 2 more days! Actually 1 1/2! I am very excited. Looking forward very much to the new me. This process has been going since 7/2021. During that time I changed my way of eating to what my after surgery foods would be. I've lost 50 lbs. I still need 125+ more to go. But I'm more than ready. Wishing all who come after me well.

I'm so happy, I just had to share and you were so kind. I decided to put my sister first, I missed her double hip replacements this summer and her husband's funeral all because my surgery was scheduled. Well this is her first holidays alone. My son is taking me to see her and he and his kids will stay a few days. Then on the 15th he'll come pick me up. I was on the phone telling my sister that and that it was about time she came first. At the same time the Dr's office called. Surgery is on for February 1st!!!! Everything is coming together perfect!
