Is your urine dark or light? If its dark increase your Water intake if you can and contact your team if you are worried. Are you having salty drinks ? like homemade broths ? These make me retain Water

Thank you! I'm trying but it's hard not to be bothered especially when I'm 5 weeks post op and not losing inches too. My urine is definitely not dark. I don't have salty drinks but my foods are definitely on the saltier side

Hey guys, I know a lot of people here went through the stall but I read many people said they at least lost inches during that time. I'm on my 10th day of stalling and both the scale or the measuring tape hasn't moved since then. Besides that I drink around 80oz of Water a day but I pee super little and in the morning wake up very bloated. Is all of these things normal?

Takes a while for pantoprazole to kick in, sometimes as long as 3 to 4 weeks. I had the sleeve back in 2015 and I never had those symptoms in the beginning. I would call your surgeon. Maybe they can switch you to Omeprazole or another type of medication that will work better for your body. Fast forward, a few years, when I first started getting gerd symptoms, I was put on famotidine and when that stopped working, I was switched to Omeprazole and then to a few others.

The Dutch healthcare system is very straightforward when it comes to medication. I'm pretty sure and unfortunately they will dismiss my concerns the first 6 weeks if I'm able to keep food and Water down and tell me to wait and let the stomach heal

I hope that is the case for you because the reflux was so painful a couple weeks after surgery that it was driving me crazy

Yes, I got sleeve. Bypass was not much of an option for me and my reflux before surgery was pretty manageable so I thought it was worth the risk. My sister works at a bariatric clinic, she told me the first month acid reflux was normal but I'm very hesitant when there are a lot of people who don't experience it at all. I hope mine goes away like yours too!

It is normal for acid production to go into overdrive after a stressful even like a surgery - I was put on pantoprozole twice a day for a month after a minor cardiac procedure earlier this year for just that reason. Add in the trauma to your stomach and the potential inflammation, etc., and it's not unreasonable for it to happen. A twice a day dosing wouldn't be unusual, either, so talk to your surgeon's team about that. Also, the acid is said to mimic, hunger, so that is also consistent.

Thank you so much for your reply! My appointment is 1 month later, so until that I think I just have to follow my symptoms and keep an eye on it but definitely will ask about the dosing

I would get reflux sometimes after a heavy meal or if I ate too close to bed. I think I don't have hiatal hernia or else my surgeon would have mentioned it after the surgery

Hi guys,

It's me again. I'm 6 days post op and I'm realizing more and more that my symptoms are reflux. I take 40 mg of pantoprazol every morning since the day after the surgery yet I cough like crazy, have food stuck in my throat feeling and almost feel the acid bubbles circulating. Not to mention the crazy hunger feeling I get even right after eating. Are these symptoms normal the first weeks of sleeve? Or is it really possible to get reflux this early stage while on a high dose of ppi? I'm not looking forward to eating real food!

Coughing after surgery isn’t that uncommon after abdominal because some patients build up mucus & then cough to break it up & bring it up. It’s important to cough & bring up the mucus to reduce the risk of an infection or pneumonia. Make sure you use a pillow against your abdomen to support your tummy when you cough. Breath exercises like breathing slowly & deeply can help.

Check with your surgeon though as the cough should be easing or gone by now.

Doubt it is reflux unless you are also experiencing more severe heart burn symptoms, burning in your throat, sour taste in your mouth, trouble swallowing or breathing. A 40mg PPI is a high dose so should be controlling any reflux or excess acid production you may have. But always best to check with your surgeon too.

Thank you so much. I use a pillow when I cough. Like you said, since it hadn't gone away after 5 days, it started to make me think if it was reflux since I have weird hunger pangs and for the first time last night in bed, I had a feeling something was stuck in my throat. It would be really upsetting to have symptoms 5 days post op already while being on liquid and purees. It makes me scared of the real food period

I know that sounds awful but you might think about checking with a home test kit just to be safe. If you were coughing from reflux, you would probably have the burning in your chest and throat. Does your doctor have you on a PPI? You could ask them for a prescription. I was on it for at least a month following my surgery. Just tossing a few ideas…. I hope you get better soon!😊

Thank you so much! Oh, definitely not covid. Don't have any other symptoms at all besides this annoying cough. I don't have the burn in chest and throat but last night I did have the "something stuck in my throat" feeling. I'm on 40mg ppi's too!

Hi everyone,

I'm 5 days post op and I have been having a cough for the past 4 days that almost can be described as whooping cough. Are my lungs trying to clear themselves? I have ocassional phlegms and post nasal drips. I'm really worried that it's reflux. I'm on a liquid and puree diet and on 40 mg reflux meds as well.
