    August surgery buddies!

You're really lucky. I felt like **** right after surgery. I had a hard time breathing deeply enough, so I had to have oxygen. I felt nauseous, and threw up a few times. Also, I had the dry heaves, and got painful cramps every time I drank a little sip of water. So, that first day in hospital I kept thinking: What have I done to myself? But now I'm two weeks out and I feel fine. Almost no vomiting, no more cramps, and almost no pain. I stopped taking painkillers a couple of days after surgery, since I didn't need them. I do feel nauseous often, which is a drag, and it's very hard for me to swallow my meds. And I'm very tired and get winded just from walking. Other than that, I feel like I've healed really well, all things considered.

I was a bit hungry during the liquid stage. All the protein shakes tasted horrible to me, but I liked the soups and the thin oatmeal, although I was a bit sick of oatmeal after a whole week. Now that I can eat pureed foods I have to say that the single scrambled egg I had this morning was absolutely delicious and the tomato soup I had for lunch was not bad. So, no, not everything tastes bad. However, I don't always know when I'm hungry. Like today at lunch, I still felt too full from the egg, so I didn't have anything. I didn't get hungry in the afternoon, but I felt more and more nauseous and finally thought it might be a good idea to have some soup, which did make me less nauseous.

You've lost 41 pounds in all. That is a lot. You're still losing, so you shouldn't feel bad. Our bodies try to hold on to the weight, so the weight will come off in spurts and sometimes there will be stalls as well. The human body is complicated and I know how you feel. I panicked on that one day post surgery when I gained weight, and when I was the same weight the day after as I'd been two days before, I wondered if I had stopped losing weight already, but then it started again. A good night's sleep is essential in weight loss, so you should try not to obsess over the numbers.

I was weighed pre surgery on August 5th, and I was 110 kg or 242 pounds. I had lost three kilos or 6.6 pounds before surgery. I weighed myself again the day after surgery, and I was still 110 kilos. The day after that I was 109 kilos, down 2.2 pounds, and the next two days 108,1 and 107.7. So I started losing weight on day two after surgery, and since then I've lost weight every day except for day 7 after surgery when I gained 0.4 kilos (almost a pound) and on day 8th I weighed the same as on day 6. Other than that, I've lost weight every day and today I've lost a little more than 7 kilos after the surgery, ten kilos in all or 22 pounds.

It was the same with my doctor, but unfortunately, I didn't tolerate it well.

Tomorrow is my first day on the puree diet. I'm looking forward to scrambled eggs and refried beans. How many people have already started on the puree stage, and what is your favorite new food?

I wasn't allowed cheese during my liquid diet, but everyone's program is different. Didn't you get written instructions from your doctor?

Is anyone else not sleeping well? Now, I no longer have any pain and the gas is not bothering me anymore. And yet, I don't sleep all that well. I keep waking up, and sometimes it takes a long time to go back to sleep. So, I sleep for 2-4 hours at a time, and I don't always get anywhere close to 8 hours a night. I was so tired today that I kept nodding off sitting up on the couch. I'm supposed to start teaching the day after tomorrow, but I know I need adequate sleep in order to be able to do a good job.

It will get better every day. Just try to get the gas out. So, after ten days, will you start on the pureed food so soon? I'm kind of jealous, since I have to do 14 full days of liquid diet. However, I'm glad I don't have to do 30 days like some people. But who knows, maybe their results will be better than mine.

Yes, I hate all the fake, sweet stuff and I hardly have it anymore. I had broth in the beginning of the liquid diet, and tomato soup, mushroom soup and very thin oatmeal in the second week.

So, it's not enough to just scramble your eggs, you need to put them in the food processor, too? I think I need to email my provider to get better guidelines for the next stage.

I don't think we have those over here. So far I've tried several different types of protein shakes, but they all taste disgusting to me. I don't like the fake chocolate, caramel or fruit taste, and I don't like the consistency either. I started making smoothies out of greek yoghurt mixed with water and vanilla flavoring. I don't know if it's a good idea or not, but it's not as horrible as protein shakes, to me, and it does contain some protein.

That sounds like a sensible approach. My drs program allows me to count half of the liquid in protein drinks as water, but since I can't really get them down, it makes little difference. What kind of food are you eating during the puree stage? I'm supposed to start the puree stage next week, and not really sure what to do. I'm not meeting anyone at the clinic before the puree stage starts and the written program is a bit vague about this stage.

I'm on day ten after surgery, and it's been like this for six days. I find it hard to decide if what I'm drinking agrees with me or not, since everything seems to have the same effect. What kind of shakes were you adding the benefiber to? Something you made from scratch, or ready made protein shakes?

Is anyone else having a hard time getting enough protein and just with the liquid diet in general? I can't stomach any of the protein drinks or puddings, so I'm using the tasteless whey protein powder, but even with that I'm not close to meeting my protein goals. Also, is it normal to have diarrhea every day? I don't have any gas pain or discomfort, so I don't know if I should be worried or not.

The grumbling and burping are worst in the first few days, and then they get a lot better.
  17. Maybe not a weird victory, but today I bought a coat in size 44 (same as UK 16 and US 12 or 14) for the first time in years. I asked to try 46 or 48, but the 46 was too big for me. So that was nice. I've also noticed that my eye bags, which have bothered me for years, are slightly better. And I had surgery less than two weeks ago and have only lost 15 pounds, so I'm excited about what the future will bring.

So, I guess it's normal to find it hard to breathe deeply, and get a little winded while walking? I kind of feel like I felt right after getting covid, and I'm not even up to 15 minutes walking yet. I walk to work which is like five minutes, and in the mornings it's kind of hard for me. Never was before. On the plus side, I lost another kilo (a little more than two pounds), so I guess I'm not stalled. And today I went to buy a new jacket for fall, and asked to try on size 46, but I ended up buying size 44 (same as UK size 16 or US size 12). I haven't fit into size 44 for years, so that was nice.

That's great. I took pain meds for the first couple of days, and then I didn't need them anymore.

My plan allowed protein drinks right after I came home from hospital. However, I find them really disgusting and have a hard time getting them down. I bought some unflavoured whey protein powder today, and hope that it will be a better choice for me. I plan on adding it to oatmeal, soups and shakes, as I've not been anywhere near meeting my protein goals.

OK, I feel a bit better to know that people can stall this early. I hope it won't last long. I weigh myself every day and have done for a long time. The only times I stop weighing myself is on vacation, or if I'm overeating and in wilful denial.

I only had the surgery a week and one day ago, so I think that's too soon for a stall?

It's so weird how different doctors have different guidelines. My clinic actually gave me a set of recipes, including tomato soup. But I've seen this tomato soup thing in some online guidelines from clinics overseas. I'm not sure if I tolerate any of the added liquids well. I feel better than last week, but I have loose and watery stools. I don't think it's dumping syndrome, because I have no gas pain, sweat or nausea, so I guess it's normal?
  24. Sunnyer

    August surgery buddies!

Yes, I started with tomato soup and then I had mushroom soup today. They gave me recipes for several different soups, including broccoli, sweet potato, tomato etc., that I could make in the second week. What are you scared of?

    August surgery buddies!

Why do you have an abdominal binder? I've never heard of it. I made mushroom soup from scratch today and it was sooooo delicious. I was a bit tired of tomato soup, so it was a nice change. But I'm also worried about how much I can eat. I'm on liquid diet but allowed to have soups if they have no chunks. I put a little soup in my bowl, maybe 4-5 spoonfuls which I ate slowly, and I finished it but didn't feel full or anything. But I wasn't sure if I could have more, so I stopped. Is anyone else worried that they will be a failure and not lose a lot of weight, or lose and then regain? I've lost almost 4 kilos after the surgery and 3 kilos before. In all almost 7 kilos or fifteen pounds. The thing is, I've been the same weight for three days now and this is pretty much exactly the weight I've been able to get down to on my own in recent years, before I start gaining again. What if my body is able to hold on to the weight, in spite of the fact that I only eat a couple of hundred calories per day? Is that physically possible?
