    August surgery buddies!

You're doing great. 43 pounds is a lot! I know what you mean about the disappointing people. though. I'm kind of frustrated myself, because I'm not seeing any weight loss this week. I started with 102.0 kilos last Saturday, and then went down to 101.3 on Monday, up to 102 again Tuesday, down again to 101.3 yesterday and up to 101.7 today. So, I've lost 300 grams this week, or less than one pound, which is basically nothing. I'm a bit envious that you guys get to meet your doctors and nutritionists already. I had surgery on the 9th of August, and my first appointment is with a nurse on September 22nd. I can email the nurse and nutritionist in the meantime, but I don't get to see anyone. I have no idea if I'm where I'm supposed to be at in my weight loss or not.

    August surgery buddies!

I didn't really feel that much restriction until I started eating actual food. For the first few days, I would sometimes have to throw up, because all of a sudden I would feel like I ate too much, even though I ate slowly, and then nausea would hit me. I still feel nauseated but I haven't had to throw up for more than a week. You're doing great with the protein. I've never managed more than 65 grams per day, but I cannot get the protein drinks or powder down.

Is this it? Is my body done?

I wouldn't stress about the 10-20 pounds, or the "ideal" weight, personally. You are at 26 BMI, and "healthy" BMI is at 24.9, which means you're awfully close. You definitely don't need to lose 20 pounds to be at a healthy weight anyway. According to your own signature, you need 8 pounds at the most. And BMI really isn't an exact science. You mention that your diabetes and sleep apnea have resolved, so you're already reaping health benefits from your weight loss. And that's the most important part. In order to be truly healthy, more exercise is most likely what you need, and then to maintain your weight and make sure you get adequate nutrition. If you do more exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, you will add muscle which will help you maintain the weight loss and maybe eventually lose a few more pounds, however slowly.

    Post Op: Struggling a little

I did broth during the liquid phase and I also forced myself to drink a protein drink a day or eat a protein pudding, even if they made me gag. I didn't actually hit my protein goals during the liquid phase, and I still don't. I was getting maybe 15-30 grams of protein per day during the liquid phase, instead of 75, and during the puree stage 20-65 (most often 25-45) grams of protein per day. To date, my best day has been 65 grams of protein, so I've never actually reached the 75 gram goal. A lot of the protein after the liquid stage has been from fish and beans, but also from eggs and a little milk, Last week I added ground beef and found that I tolerate it well, better than milk products. But the protein drinks and puddings make me gag and throw up, so I makes me able to eat less during the day. I don't know how happy my doctors will be that I skip them, but I just can't. I'm nauseated enough as it is, more or less all day, so I can't deal with the fake sweet taste of most or all protein products.

    Nausea

I'm three weeks post op, and I never really feel comfortable. I use myfitnesspal and measure my food in order to eat appropriate amounts. I do feel better now that I can eat actual food and not just soups or protein drinks, which I frankly found revolting. Now, I mostly eat white fish and chicken, hummus, refried beans, mashed baked beans, eggs etc. But even though I eat small amounts and try to eat slow, I usually feel nauseous after I eat, and also between meals. So many things disgust me now. I bought sugar free juice drinks, in order to drink something other than water, but they make me nauseous. Is this normal? Does everyone feel like this? Does it get better? Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get rid of nausea?

    Nausea

I can't stomach protein shakes at all, and no protein puddings either. You got meds for nausea? Do they work?

    Hunger

I do feel hunger sometimes. More often I feel nauseous. I feel nauseous when I haven't eaten for a while, but I also feel nauseous after eating. I never really feel good. I hope that's not my new reality.

    August surgery buddies!

I'm 22 days post op, but the pain is firmly in my left side, and it does get worse when I bend over or move in the wrong way. So quite possibly it's what you talk about. I wish the surgeons or the clinic / hospital would warn people about that. It is quite scary when you have a new kind of pain, all of a sudden, weeks after surgery.

    Mini Goals :)

Well done! My first mini goal was to get under 100 kilos (220 pounds) and I thought I might get there this week. Unfortunately, I gained some weight yesterday, and today I'm still somewhat heavier than I was two days ago, so I don't think it's going to happen this week. It's great to be able to see progress. I too, have a long way to go, and sometimes I'm afraid I will never get there.

    August surgery buddies!

Stalls are so annoying, I actually GAINED weight yesterday, lost some today but I'm still heavier than I was two days ago. I was so looking forward to getting under 100 kilos (220 pounds) because I haven't been under that weight in more than 10 years. 101 kilos is exactly where I've gotten when I've dieted on my own, so it would be a breakthrough for me to get to 100 or 99, but it's not likely to happen this week now.

    August surgery buddies!

i never wore a binder and this incision has not hurt until yesterday. It's just so weird to get a new type of pain three weeks after the surgery. I did email a nurse at the hospital, and she sent me a reply with more questions. I replied to her, but they're closed now. It's not acute pain, just a sting now and then, and when I lean forward etc. I don't have a fever or increased heartbeat, so it's probably not that serious.

    Stalls and weight gain

I always weigh myself in the morning, when I wake up. I guess I'm stressed because when I've tried to lose weight on my own, I always end up stalling and the gaining weight again after a few weeks, even if I'm still on a diet and writing down everything I eat. It's like my body adjusts super fast.

    August surgery buddies!

Is it normal to feel pain three weeks after gastric sleeve surgery? I have been relatively pain free after the first week, but today and yesterday I've had aches and pain in one of my incision sites and also in general around my midsection. Is this normal, or should I have it looked at?

    August surgery buddies!

That sounds scary. I'm glad you're all right. I've been a bit lax with my heartburn medication, because I haven't had any heartburn after the first week. I'm going to try to remember taking it every day from now on. I'm winded whenever I walk still, but I bought a bra this week and I'm down a band size. That's something. I also started tackling the box of books that was left over when I changed my bookshelves this summer, and I took a whole bag to recycling. So I've started back on projects I didn't complete because of my surgery. That feels good.

    Get ready to blossom

How much water weight can you lose, though? I read somewhere that you can lose up to 20 pounds of water after changing your diet. I have now lost almost 26 pounds on the scale. Surely, some of that must be fat? I'd be really disappointed if I've gone through all of this just to lose water weight.
  16. Congratulations! It's a pretty amazing achievement to have lost 46 kilos. I too, am waiting impatiently to get to a double digit number on the scale. I haven't lost as much as you - yet, but I haven't been under 100 kilos since 2007, so for 15 years. I also tried keto but didn't do as well as you did. You can do this. 😁

    Get ready to blossom

That is great. You look good. And 79 pounds is a lot. Well done! I hope I will be able to get a result this visible. I have lost 22 pounds in two and a half week, but I don't really see a big difference yet. Tonight I met some cousins and had to participate in a group photo. My cousin sent me the photo and I'm still fat. I don't look any smaller. Hopefully though, I will some day.

    August surgery buddies!

I was supposed to start vitamin supplements this week, but I have such a hard time taking my blood pressure meds that I don't want to add any meds. Also, I wanted to see how puréed food agreed with me, without the effect of additional pills. So far, it's been going ok. I guess I will have to start taking supplements next week. Not excited about taking more pills, since my current meds make me gag and sometimes vomit.

    Post Op: Struggling a little

I was pretty tired and nauseous during the liquid phase. I struggled with reaching my water goals, and I'm sure that made me more tired. And I absolutely cannot do the protein drinks. Once I started eating pureed food I mostly felt better, although I still have off days. So I hope you are doing better now that you are having purées.

    August surgery buddies!

A similar thing happened to me the other night while eating pureed food and watching the news. All of a sudden I felt I had eaten too much, I felt nauseous and I had to run to the bathroom and throw up. I had a measured portion, and I wasn't close to finished, so it may just have been a case of eating too fast. We really have to be careful when we eat and drink, it seems.

    August surgery buddies!

That's a great result. I've lost 23 and a half pounds since August 9th, so that's pretty good. Congrats! I can't wait to go under 100 kilos (220 pounds), but that may not happen until next week.

    August surgery buddies!

Drinking water all the time is fine, but sometimes I miss other drinks. I especially miss soda and juices. I remember some people in one of the forums (maybe this one?) mentioning Crystal light. I looked into it, and Crystal Light is sold in one store here that I know of, in another town 10-15 minutes away. Is it really good? Good enough to make a special trip for? According to their website, this store has Pink grapefruit, OTG lemonade, strawberry, raspberry lemonade, lemon ice tea, peach tea and raspberry ice. Any of these any good? This is a store that sells exclusively American brands. Are there any other American foodstuffs that you can think of that might be helpful as a part of a post surgery diet?

    August surgery buddies!

It's hard in the beginning to reach the liquid goal, but it gets better with time. I had my surgery two and a half weeks ago, and I can reach it now. Still don't reach the protein goal, though, mostly due to my aversion to protein drinks and powders. Do you have a large incision? I have four tiny cuts and they don't hurt.

    August surgery buddies!

It has improved a lot. I still feel nauseous when I'm hungry, and also when taking pills or if I eat too fast. But most of the day I feel ok. The most difficult thing for me now, other than taking medication, is the no drinking until half an hour after a meal rule. Like today, I had some mashed cod for lunch, which was kind of dry, and then had to go back to work with a dry mouth and wait for the half hour until I could have some water. I have a tendency towards a dry mouth, and have had to use sugarless gum during the time I cannot drink.

    Was my surgery successful?

I was pretty hungry during the liquid diet phase and was initially pretty disappointed, like you, that I hadn't "lost" the hunger like many people report. Like, you, I didn't do a pre-op liquid diet, because my surgeon doesn't require or recommend it. Now I'm on pureed food and doing better. I do still get hungry if I eat too little. Like yesterday, I had one scrambled egg for breakfast and felt fine, but today I had only half a boiled egg, mashed (leftover from the previous day's lunch) and felt hungry afterwards. You are losing weight, even if it may not be as fast as you wish, but still at a healthy rate and that's the important part. It's understandable that you will lose weight slower than someone who is closer to 300 pounds or more. The best way to avoid hunger is to focus on protein, since it makes you feel full longer. Also, fibrous vegetables may fill you up, too. I guess for both of us we just have to keep measuring and hoping our bodies will get used to smaller portions. I weigh or measure everything I eat and enter all my meals into myfitnesspal, in order to make sure I don't go overboard and get enough protein.
