Hiya Merill. Not too far to go now. It's a bonus that your surgeon can fix your hernia at the same time. A two for one deal. My Surgeon poked me in the belly yesterday to see how my hernia was going. It will be nice that he can also fix this when I have my bypass on the 9th of this month. Are you on some liquid diet at the moment. It is getting exciting as it gets nearer. We got this Merill.

    Hi Possum,

Yes I'm getting a two-for-one deal LOL I'm so glad that it's going to get fixed and I'm finally going to have a peaceful nights sleep without the fear of waking up with acid rushing up!

Apparently when I lose the weight the hernia will not return, it's weight-related as I've been told by my surgeon, I'm supposed to be on two shakes plus low starch low carb vegetables but I haven't started it yet. I'll start right after mother's day lol

I've already lost 13 kilos with my own efforts anyway so I'm assuming 1 week of liquid diet should be sufficient.

Hope they can fix yours as well and all the best to you on the 9th keep me updated please!

    We got this girl! lol

Gastric bypass is set for May 16th. Hopefully that won’t get delayed. I’ve been having some stomach issues, and my primary doctor is wary about approving me for surgery until we find out what’s going on. I can’t wait!

I'm also due on May 16th with gastric bypass + hiatal hernia repair, hope all goes well with you please keep me updated on how you go post surgery.

    Best wishes.

May 19th and ready, but the real test for me will be the liver shrinking diet!, but hey, 2 weeks is nothing right?……

May 16th and I haven't started my liquid diet yet I hope I can tolerate it lol

Good luck with your surgery and please keep us updated with how you go😊🙏

  5. Yes! I haven’t told very many people at all because the ones I did tell that I thought would be supportive. Have had nothing but negative things to say. Is discouraging to say the least but I have been leaning on the couple of very supportive friends and family members. I am in 2 other groups besides this one and those have all helped. I have a friend that started the same time as me. She’s going for surgery the 16th so we have been through all of this together.

Yes it is very discouraging! but little do they know is how determined I am! I just wish they realise how much I need their support! Yes I too have a few family members and friends who actually support me and are happy for me but the ones who are negative really do weigh me down (one of the negatives is my mum lol) I just change the subject now and don't allow them to make any comments about the surgery anymore lol. I'm so happy that I've joined this forum as it's given me such Insight and knowledge the more I learn the more I build confidence towards the due date which is May 16th. It's nice to see we're not alone.

I'm scheduled for my VSG on May 16th. I start my 2wk pre-op on May 2nd. I know it's my nerves, but I'm so scared that the pre-op diet isn't going to work and my surgery is going to be cancelled 😞

What are some pre-op tips you guys have been following? I know I have to stay at 800cals a day with two Protein Shakes and a "normal" meal. I bought some Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisines to get me through. Hopefully these will be okay ✌️

    We're surgery buddies!

I'm due for gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on May 16th.

As far as I've read oh what people do free up with their diet everyone's doctor has said something different but the bottom line is to not work the liver too hard thus shrinking in size if rested and no fats to work on. I will be starting my diet tomorrow with two shakes and 2 cups of low starch low carb vegetables. Hope all goes well for you! Please let us know how you go post-op, would love to hear from you.

Wishing you all the best. 🙏🙏🙏

    Hi Everyone!

I’m new here and have sleeve surgery set for May 20. Anyone else in May?

    Thanks!

I'm scheduled for a gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on May 16th. I'm glad I joined this forum as it's given me so much insight and knowledge of what to expect and how to deal with it, it's such a releife to read other people's experiences. You know you're let alone! I dont believe any research can give you this much information that is 100% accurate then from the people who have actually experienced it.

Good luck to all who are waiting for their surgery best wishes🙏🙏🙏

I am having an endoscopy the day before my surgery and I am pretty sure I have a hiatal hernia as I have all the signs. They will repair the hernia at the same time they do the bypass. Not looking forward to the recovery from that, since I have to fly home 4 days after the surgery.

    Oh my 😕

4 days is very limited but chin-up and just pray that all goes well and there's no complications. My surgery is on the 16th of May, I too will be getting a hiatal hernia repair and gastric bypass, I've had my hernia for years. Can't wait to get it repaired finally! But I think you should be ok with 4 days of recovery as long as there's no other complications just make sure that you do light core exercises and lots of walking prior to surgery, that will speed up your recovery (as I heard from people who have had it)

And good luck with your surgery hope all goes well for you Sparkly🙏👍

Exactly and what can happen usually does...but I'll think you'll be ok now. Remember, everything eventually just becomes a memory.

Very true Pollito, there really isn't anything we can do when this sort of thing happens, other then keep positive chin up and wait, did not let it get me down! İt's just given me more time to prepare i guess lol

My surgery is the same day! Good luck to you :)

Mine is rescheduled from 27th of April to May 2nd or the 16th due to covid patients taking over all the beds! I'm told that I could be called in either the 2nd or the 16th here I am waiting with my suitcase all set to go (sigh)

Mine was postponed 9 days. My 10 day Optifast liquid diet was put on pause officially but I just continued it. Took less willpower for me to power through for 19 days than to stop and start. Reason was the anesthetist was unwell. I was....angry. But we got there in the end.

Yeah same here I was so enthusiastically waiting organised my job to be covered by someone else at the same time, so this gives me 3 weeks of no work but everything happens for a reason I guess, there's nothing I can do but wait, the bad part is the hospital staff said it could even be cancelled on the day of the rescheduled date, so anything can happen I remember my brother being ping-ponged and cancelled rescheduled 5 times before he had his kneecap surgery finalised and done!

  12. I also went home with injections I was a little confused as to why. I honestly didn’t finish them I had about a weeks worth and I’m on my third week .. I feel hungrier more than ever but I’m doing purée I don’t feel like I get full
But what are those injections for didn't you ask your doctor?
And after the surgery the hunger hormones are meant to be decreased if anything! maybe you should consult your doctor about how you feel and ask them what the injections are for just for your peace of mind.
I'm due for a gastric bypass and a hiatal hernia repair on the 16th of May and now I'm curious about the injections

Yeah, I honestly struggled the most in the beginning of the journey (a bit before my initial consultation) and then extreme struggle right at the end (just weeks before my pre op diet) because of that constant fear that eating was over and done with forever. Yeah...not the case at all but damn does it harbor the food funeral.

I honestly wish bariatric centers would offer more emphasis and support in that. I think a lot of people go into it believing surgery means no more enjoying food at all in any capacity...not the case. I had a lot of trouble with overeating a month before my surgery. I was working out like MAD so I didnt gain weight but I wanted to eat everything delicious because I believed that was my last chance. It's literally maybe a month to two months until you can eat relatively normal foods again and it goes by fast. I had my surgery in February and I'm already eating everything again accept bread, raw vegetables and refined sugars. I feel plenty satisfied and enjoy what I eat.

One can probably argue all day how to see food post op and how that can benefit your weight loss and weight maintenance but im talking more so about realistic, day to day stuff. For some the all or nothing approach works but for most, it's okay to admit to yourself that you still "enjoy" food while also not letting it take over your life or your weight. I can't stress enough how temporary the extreme dieting is. It's not meant to last. No you can't overeat post op, but you likely won't want to anyway and you can still enjoy a variety foods just like before.

When I needed to get back on the horse pre op, it helped to remind myself that it's not a goodbye forever from food, it's a goodbye forever to overeating. Its merely a "see you in a month or two" to solid foods and complex carbs. Lol

Thank you so much for sharing this side of the bariatric scene as I was thinking with all this emotional rollercoaster some of us go through and the 'food funerals' I too was thinking, but in a couple of months we're all going to be able to eat most things but in moderation so it's not all that bad, I'm due for a gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on the 16th of May my dietitian has allowed me to have two cups of low starch low carb vegetables with my liquid diet but I still use my own judgement and eat a little bit of everything that's low fat low carb low starch no bread or Pasta like a handful or a bite just so I don't hit that emotional low.

Well all the best to everyone whose press op AND post op lots of hugs🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Delta was worse (as in a more dangerous variant)- but the difference is, there were no vaccines available when we were hit by Alpha - and it was also so new that they weren't sure how to treat it. They've learned a lot in the last couple of years...

Well one would hope so in 2 and a half years with so many lives lost millions of people vaccines and trialled like guinea pigs😶

Oh wow!! We've had a total of 4 different strains of covid here in the US. Alpha strain (I had that one), Delta, Omicron (I had that one) and the new one (I forgot the name of it). Alpha was BAD BAD BAD. Because I had that, I was immune to Delta (that's what i was told and I never got it, so...) and then I had Omicron (I honestly never even noticed it until I tested positive for it) and I was told having Omicron makes me immune to the new variant (so apparently Delta is an offshoot of Alpha and the new variant is an offshoot of Omicron, which is why the immunity is working that way). I also have my antibodies tested every month to make sure my titer levels are still in the immune range. As long as they are, I'm not getting the vaccine. If/when they drop very low or below immune, I will get double vaxxed and boosted. I think if you've had covid AND you're vaxxed, you'll be completely fine. If you get covid after all that, I doubt you would see much of anything with it.

Well when I was down with covid, nobody told me what strain it was they just tell you that you are positive and thats it.. I had it pretty bad I was bedridden for 5 days with a fever I had no energy to get up at all and the coughing was so bad, my throat was damaged to the point where I had no voice left, my stomach muscles were cramped from so much pressure, I lost all sense of taste and smell I never thought I would be so down and out with a virus but luckily I survived it with my family support and not admitted to hospital. Thank God! I wonder if that was the Delta or Alpha strain because a lot of people were saying its more likely to be Delta but now you're saying Alpha is worse than Delta whatever it was I'm glad it's over and hope that this whole virus pandemic just ends so everyone can get on with their lives🙏🙏🙏

I'm sorry :( Is there any way you can tell your job what happened and work the original days you had off and then take off the new days you'll need for the new surgery date? Is your area a hotbed for covid again? Where I'm from, we're in "green" and all mask mandates have been lifted except in doctor's offices and hospitals.

I've already spoken to my boss, and told him it's ok for the 3 weeks that he's found someone to cover for me, not to stress over it but if it extends any longer then we'll think about resolving it. Unfortunately here in Melbourne I am in a covid hotspot, it's everywhere with the new variants. Hence the reason why I drive to work although its so costly to take the car in to the city, with the parking and toll fees! its crazy. I try to minimise the risks of catching it as much as I can! although Im a covit Survivor from 3 months ago, and already double vaccined. But we're still at risk of catching all the variants of this stupid disease! oh well everything happens for a reason I guess, I just have to wait and see what happens with the new scheduled date now🙄😐

  17. Was scheduled for the 27th April! Just had a call this morning from the hospital's surgical unit, apparently there are no beds in the hospital they're all occupied with covid patients, the next available date is May 16th and even THAT'S not guaranteed! I'm not stressing about ANOTHER the 3 weeks to wait, it's just my work situation we had to find someone to cover for me, now I've got 3 weeks or even longer to sit around and do nothing (loss of income) ☹️ and the liquid diet & preparations- all for nothing 😩😩

I am late coming into this. Insurance approval and scheduling happened very quickly. I am scheduled for RYGB on April 27th. My doctor requires a full liquid diet for two week prior to surgery, so I am right in the middle of that. I'm excited and nervous. My primary fears are the post surgical nausea and delay in return to work.

We're surgery twins! also due for a RYGB + hiatal hernia repair 27th of April do keep me posted post-op as I'd like to hear from you on how you go, hope I can return to work in 2-3 weeks.

I understand your disappointment. Remember, everything happens for a reason. Keep the Faith.

I was going to say the exact same thing, I agree with beginanew everything really does happen for a reason! atleast this will give you some more time to catch up on the last minute things that you wanted to do before surgery, that's what I would have done. Think of the glass half full and stay positive😊💪🙏

I've read on the forum many revise to a bypass if they have hiatal hernia and acid reflux. This wouldn't be an option for me, I had colon cancer and need to have yearly colonoscopy. Makes me feel its higher stakes with the sleeve as I won't be able to revise.

Yes I too have read that and was quite surprised that it can be reversed I didn't know until I joined the forum, I'm glad I did! We can learn so much from others's experiences there's a lot of ideas that people have used reviewed and shared on this forum wich I found so informative.
