  1. Yesterday was my first appointment at Ridgeview Bariatric Center. I met with a nurse first and then the surgeon. I can’t believe I got to meet with the surgeon on the first appointment. Is that normal? The surgeon was really impressive, informative and encouraging. I left with a binder loaded with all the information I need (pre-op plan and checklist, surgery overview, post-op plans for diet and exercise with log charts, meal plans, recipes and more). They did blood work before I left. I drove home feeling so happy and hopeful (I might have shed a few tears). Today the nurse called me to schedule appointments with a dietician, psychologist and exercise physiologist. I don’t want to get too excited because I know things can go wrong at any step along the way (with the psych eval, testing and insurance approval). Right now I’m feeling really optimistic.

    First Appointment Successful

I’m kinda wondering why my surgeon ordered an upper GI instead of an endoscopy. I have to drive 45 minutes for the procedure because nobody does them in my area (sigh).

    Anyone in MINNESOTA?

I have severe GERD also, which is why I chose RNY gastric bypass. I don’t have a surgery date yet. I have 5 appointments scheduled in the next two weeks (dietitian, exercise PT, Psych eval, upper GI). You’re so lucky to get the Mayo Clinic. I’m nervous that as I’m getting all these important steps done, the hospital decides to pause elective surgeries. I just heard that Allina canceled WLS for three months!

    First Appointment Successful

Catwoman, I think it’s a similar plan for me. I just scheduled appointments with the dietitian (two visits), psychologist (two visits), exercise physiologist (one visit) and testing. I won’t see the surgeon again until the pre-op visit.

What to expect at pre-op appointment

Viking Beast, that is SO helpful. So basically, they re-do the blood work that they did in the beginning, right? Where did you have the EKG done? Was it with your primary care doctor?
  6. I am new to the group (first post). I have my very first appointment in a few days and I am SO NERVOUS! I have done tons of research and decided that RNY is the best option for me due to my severe GERD. I have a BMI of 37.8 and two co-morbidities. I have made notes of all my health issues and reasons why I want the surgery. I’ve been rehearsing the question “why do you want the surgery” with my husband and my answer is a rambling mess. I get so nervous and talk too much and try to sound educated. Good grief, I could use some solid advice. This first appointment is SO important to me. I don’t want to mess it up and not get a second appointment with the dietitian. S.O.S.
  7. I just did the math and 8 ounces of water for an 8 hour period is 64 ounces. That’s not bad. I agree with the comments above that this is an emotionally and physically challenging journey that you are on. You can do this!
