I had my sleeve on 11/4 here in Jacksonville. Dr. Uchal at st Vincent’s riverside.

I was self pay ($15,000 total includes hospital stay and follow visit). My BMI wasn’t high enough for insurance coverage. On the plus side, I got scheduled pretty quickly and didn’t have to jump through the hoops required when using insurance. I had 2 pre-op dietitian appointments (honestly pointless in my opinion. They could have just me with the info binder), blood work, EKG, and a chest X-ray. I have no co-morbidities. I didn’t do the pre surgery diet, just Clear Liquids the day before.

The first 10 days sucked, not because of pain, but because of nausea. And I was starving. I couldn’t drink the nasty ass Protein Shakes, not for lack of trying. I just drank Water basically. My surgeon told me don’t even worry about Protein just stay hydrated. When I was allowed to have caffeine I started drinking the latte Premier Protein.

I’m almost 2 months post and have lost 25.5 pounds.
i eat things I shouldn’t sometimes (things that most people stay away from until goal, but it’s impossible to eat a lot of anything.

Thanks for the information. $15K Is not bad at all. Mine is a little over $18K. Did you have to get a Psyc Evaluation?

I went for my first consult in December as well. I have to have monthly appointments for 3 months (for my insurance) before we can set the surgery date, so I will be taking care of all the other appointments in the meantime. I did my psyche evaluation through Advantage Point behavioral online. I was able to get the appointment pretty quickly. You might want to try them. Doing evals for surgery is there specialty.

Curious what insurance do you have? Mine wont cover any bariatric surgery so i am paying almost $20K out of pocket. as for the eval thanks for the link. I will contact them. I have tried other locations for the eval but my surgeons office is extremely strict and have rejected every single other one i have tried to get it thru.

That just sounds bizarre but hopefully it's at least an indication you've got a good doctor. I've thought everyone I've seen throughout this process has been very good except my psych eval which was the dumbest thing in the world. Basically asked me over and over if I'm suicidal and told me a hundred times to contact him if I ever was depressed. I happily took the passing grade and am now looking for someone useful to talk to about any issues that come up.

Wow yours sounds easy. I was told mine will be 2 hour interview and then a 600-800 question "Exam" on a computer that will take hours to complete. and then they will decide if i "Pass or fail" lol I was like SERIOUSLY? LOL

Wow, I'm sorry. I guess I am lucky. I had my first appointment on Oct. 25 and things went pretty smoothly from there. I was able to get all necessary evals and tests done pretty quickly. I hope the long wait isn't too discouraging.

I actually got upset about it and was very close to just going to a dealership and buying me a new jetski with the 20 grand i have put aside for this surgery lol. Its annoying because they are sooooo specific with the psyc evaluation. I found other licensed Psychologist that do bariatric evaluations and my doctors office rejected them all. I have to go with who they approve. I am like seriously??? LOL and the next available appointment for the psyc is in March. I even tried to bribe them and be like "I will pay double to get a sooner appointment" I got shut down haha.

  5. Interesting lol. But paying out of pocket and these psych people charge over a hundred dollars an hour, seems to be in their best interest to keep you for extra sessions. We shall see what happens. If I do end up needing more sessions then i will contact endo hospital in Mexico and get it done there since they dont require it and save me about 10 grand lol.

My practice required an endoscopy before doing a sleeve to ensure that there wasn't undiagnosed GERD (you can have it and not know it) to start with - if there had been, they wouldn't have done a sleeve since there is an excellent chance it would worsen with a sleeve and necessitate a revision later. Obviously, I could develop it in the future but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it.

I'd definitely broach the subject with your doctor before making a final decision, since you will have to weigh all the pros and cons.

Interesting. I had a colonoscopy and Endoscopy earlier this year due to me having diverticulosis. No issues they mentioned. Just spasms in my large colon.

  7. When i first looked up this surgery and decided to get it i had no clue about the psychological evaluation part. I thought that was just maybe for people who use insurance and they require it. So far that is what is standing in the way of me scheduling my surgery. The psychologist the doctor is recommending has no openings for 3 months. 3 months literally wasted in my opinion. I tried going elsewhere and each one is rejected by my doctors office because they don't do very specific testing called MMPI and some other i forget what its called. I checked with the Endohospital in Mexico and they don't even do psych evals.

  8. Hi

So i am planning on getting the sleeve. But i keep hearing about people needing revisions to bypass. Those that got the revision. Why? This worries me because i am paying cash for my sleeve which is roughly $20K and i dont have the money for a revision if that will be needed. Makes me not want to get the surgery at all.

  9. So i called for my psyc evaluation appointment today here in Florida and was told next available appointment is at the end of March... 3 dang months. No way to skip it. I tried going with a online psyc bariatrics evaluation doctor and my hospital rejected it and said no because they dont do it their way. I didnt think i would have to do this since i am paying cash and not using insurance. Endo Hospital in Mexico doesnt require a Psyc Evalucation.
