jensgettinghealthy reacted to jaymecaye in My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22
My gastric sleeve was done 1/22/22. I had a 10 day pre-op liquid diet which was a lot and lonely. My nurse was supposed to call and check on me about half way thru- she never did- nor did she return my voicemails. I also was in a weird schedule shift at work so I worked 8 of the 10 days- which I think was a blessing in disguise since I was busy and not focusing on what I was or wasn’t eating.

Due to COVID it was a drop off pick up situation. So my mom dropped me off at 5:20 am. I was in communication with her until my nurse anesthetist came in and they put my phone in my bag. I don’t remember anything after the operating nurse coming in and putting my hair net on me around 7:20 am.

The next thing I knew I woke up in recovery with a nurse sitting on either side of me. They were super great- my mouth was very very dry so they let me suck on a sponge. I was also very close to the desk in recovery so I could tell my mom was on the phone with them. I immediately requested my phone from my bag and called my mom. It was about 11:30am and she hadn’t heard from my surgeon- she was not happy. But had a lot of relief hearing from me. The conversation was short as I was still out of it. The nurses also put some Vaseline on my lips since they were super dry.

My room wasn’t ready yet so I was able to just relax in recovery for a bit. Lots of naps in and out and some texting with friends. Once my room was ready the wheeled me away from recovery.

Once I got to my room I was given goals.
    -Manage nausea
    -Manage pain
    - go to the bathroom
    -take a sips test
    -walk around
    -sit in the chair

I didn’t find my self nauseous until they gave me a different pain med via my IV. Luckily I didn’t throw up and they gave me some spearmint patch on my gown which was nice. Pain was managed via IV for the first bit.

I really felt like I had to go to the bathroom so the nurse helped me on my feet within about 2 hours of being in my room. No luck on the bathroom- but I found I could get up and move. After that we did my sips test at 1:15 which went really well. After that I got white grape juice watered down and Water to sip on. Goal was 5 med cups (2 tablespoons) an hour.

After that another nurse came in wanting my to start walking. He helped me into my really comfy pj pants- no open booty walks for me! We did 2 laps around my ward. I ended up in the locked pediatric location so they were a little more lax with me about walking on my own.

During this time I also attempted to go to the bathroom a few more times. Finally before 8pm my nurse came in turned the sink on and basically told me to relax and I was in my head about not going. ALAS- it worked- a ton of relief happened from being able to go.

That night I walked more- drank more- slept more and prayed I was gonna be able to go home. I swear every time I was falling asleep the nurse aid came in to take my vitals. ☹️ the nurse aid also had no knowledge base in what I had done so when I asked for broth she told me to order… there were no ordering food for sleeve patients. The broth was in the kitchen on the floor so that was a bit of a run around but it all worked out well.

The next morning a different bariatric surgeon came in to talk to me- mine didn’t come in on Sundays…. But he was cool and told me I could go home! So I got my paper work and then a nurse came in unhooked my from my IV so I got dressed. My nurse came in gave me a cart and some directions and away I went. I got my meds filled there and then waited for my mom to pick me up.

The first day I was home I was very slow moving. Ended up sleeping in a recliner because it hurt too much to get out of bed.

Monday and Tuesday went similar- very quiet working on getting liquids in and moving around as much as possible.

Today I can get up much easier and moving around a lot more. Since I’ve been home I’ve only taken Tylenol for pain killers- they gave me more but I haven’t felt like the pain was bad enough to use them.

Here are my number so far…
    Starting process- 270.9
    Surgery day- 258.6
    2 days home- 256.6

So far I’ve lost 14 pounds. I can’t wait to see where I am in a month.

I’ll definitely keep posting my journey here. Wish me luck!

The catheter was incorrectly placed. The balloon wasn’t in my bladder but my ureathra. So yeah that explains why I was in excruciating pain. My surgeon took it out today and we are hoping I won’t need another.

Thank you all for the responses. To answer some of the questions I've received: I'm not a minor, I'm in my twenties. I originally didn't want to tell anyone I was getting this procedure done because I had a sinking feeling this would become the result and I was right. I went against my better judgment and listened to someone who suggested that it would be best to tell them. However, I feel so much better about the whole situation now that I've posted the struggles I've been having. I'm glad I have support here. I also now have support from my siblings and it's been extremely helpful. I truly questioned my sanity and now I've found solace within my conviction.

jensgettinghealthy reacted to blackcatsandbaddecisions in I hit goal today!
I had surgery on 11/10/20, but started my weight loss efforts on 7/5/20. If you’ve been here a while I’m sure you’ve seen me lurking about the forums.
Stats: SW 339. CW: 165. I am a 5’10 woman in her 40s. I work full time and have young children. My current BMI is 23, I started off with it closer to 50.

I knew it was going to take me a while to hit goal- I had 174 lbs to lose. I did all the calculators pre-op that said I would be lucky to get under 200 lbs, but I decided that just wasn’t going to apply to me (haha). My plan was to focus on fruits, vegetables, and healthy Proteins while ramping up exercise. I eliminated Cookies, pastries, and candy but that’s about it. I don’t do low carb, because that isn’t how I’m planning on living the rest of my life. I focus on calorie reduction, which sounds like oh if that’s so easy why did you need surgery? Well cutting calories is possible if you aren’t hungry all the time no matter how much you eat, and if you can fill up on the healthy things without it being like flash paper into a volcano. I honestly did need the surgery, and I’m not going to pretend it did the work for me, but it gave me the help for the work I wanted to be able to do.

Six days a week I do a split between running and rowing for a half hour. I’m going to run in a 5k this spring, which has been a dream of mine for years. I exercise on my lunch break every day.

Yes, I have some loose skin. It’s nowhere as bad as people make it out to be. I am not exactly planning on running around in a bikini so it’s not like it limits my life at all. It’s not visible in my clothes, not even tight fitting ones. I might get it removed some day, but if I don’t I’ll still be happy.

This weight loss has been the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me. Life is difficult when you are morbidly obese. It’s difficult physically, emotionally, and socially. This weight loss hasn’t fixed every problem in my life, but I didn’t expect for it to. It fixed my weight related problems, and I had a lot of them.

This surgery can be life changing, but it’s not a magic bullet. You still have to make huge life changes. But if you feel sabotaged you your own constant hunger, cravings, and binges, this can really be the tool you use to dig yourself out of the seemingly insurmountable weight you need to lose.

This isn’t a finish line for me. I am still working on hopefully losing another 15 lbs, and I’m never going back to my old eating habits. I know I signed up for a lifelong change, otherwise I’ll be right back where I started. But finally hitting goal was a nice early Christmas present to myself. Sorry for the essay, but I don’t really have anyone in real life to share with who gets it!

I just had VSG surgery on 12/10. I was so nervous the weeks leading up to my surgery. I had anxiety and trouble sleeping but you know what? I did it and I’d do it again. The decision was easy but the process is difficult. You just have to get through it. Remember why you decided to do this. Remember how good you are going to feel afterwards. Today makes a week. I’m home, moving around and tolerating liquids and some applesauce. It’s hard to predict how you will feel 6 weeks post op but imo, you get stronger everyday. Your body is going to go through a lot of changes after a surgery like this. I’m still early in mines, I’m sore, not as strong as I was but also had 85% of my stomach removed. I wish you all the best and know that any choice you make you YOUR choice. Take care 💜

I’m at 6 weeks now and would definitely do a cruise. You’ll be able to eat yogurt, oatmeal, ham and eggs for Breakfast. The lunch and dinner buffet and menus will have lots of options for Protein and vegetables…especially fish. You’ll be full after a small portion. I haven’t been eating salads because I don’t feel ready for raw vegetables and hard fruits like apples. I would skip dessert, bread, and alcohol. You could bring some Protein Powder in case you’re low on protein with the small portions. With the pre diet and surgery, you would probably be down 25 pounds by your cruise.
