I know when I was slightly dehydrated I felt nauseous all day long...have you been getting in all your water?

    Painful gas after surgery

My gas from the surgery (i.e. the gas they inflate you with) lasted about 3 days. My intestinal gas which is what I think you are referring to lasted about 10-14 days. It was PAINFUL! Gas-X did not help me nor did walking. It just had to work itself out. I think its your intestinal track figuring out what the heck just happened LOL.

Anyone not need iron after bypass?

I actually misunderstood my surgeon at my post op appointments. I bought iron but did not take it as I thought I was supposed to wait until my 3 month bloodwork to see if I needed iron. At week 6-7 I started to feel really tired so I reached out to my team to see if I should start taking iron. They told me I should have been taking it all along. My iron levels were slightly elevated prior to surgery.
  4. LOL that stuff is horrible. It's best to drink it fast through a straw and cold. I actually didn't have to do it (only no food or drink after midnight) but I did. I didn't want to have to deal with going #2 at the hospital so I drank some early the afternoon before surgery and also only had clear liquids the day before surgery (again I didn't have to but I wanted to). I was very glad I did all that because I had no pooping issues at the hospital. They happy that I farted...LOL

    Gastric Bypass WITH stomach removal

I had gastric bypass in early March during which they fixed my hiatal hernia. The hernia ended up being quite large and difficult to fix. During the hernia fix, my stomach fundus got quite banged up so they removed it. I was very happy to hear this because most of the gherlin is produced in the fundus. I still have the rest of my stomach so that part is the same as a typical bypass. Glad everything is working out for you. It is unsettling that they are able to go in a "do what they want".

    Constipation after gastric sleeve surgery

My surgeon said Miralax was ok to take immediately after surgery. I take it everyday to avoid constipation. I've been constipated twice since surgery and both times it was due to missing my Miralax two days in a row. I also take generic Colace daily as well.

    SO FLIPPING COLD!

What about a small portable heater when you have to sit at your desk.

    Pain after surgery

Sorry you are in so much pain. There are two different gas pains. One is from the abdominal inflation and is trapped in your abdominal cavity which, from what I was told, presses on your diaphragm and the shoulder pain is inferred from nerves near the diaphragm. The other is intestinal gas due to the surgery itself. Unfortunately, I found my pain meds did not touch either one. The shoulder pain took about 2-3 days to go away (it gets re-absorbed into the body) but my intestinal gas pains took about 10 days. I found the intestinal gas to much more painful. I could literally feel the air bubbles moving through my system. I did take chewable Gas-X and found little relief (they will only help the intestinal gas). Eventually, it will be gone and a dim memory...hope you are feeling better otherwise.

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

remember it's to make surgery safer by shrinking your liver...you can do anything for 10 days! It'll be over before you know it and you will be on the other side 😊

Possible stricture and the dressed foamies

Maybe go back to the ER or even a different ER if the first didn't want to do an endoscopy and your surgeon doesn't want to do one either. If you can't get water down, that's a BIG problem!

    weight gain after surgery

It's like we are twins...For the past 5 days I have gained and lost the same 0.5 lbs. I had surgery on March 3rd and have lost a total of 37 lbs (12 lbs during pre op diet and 25 lbs since surgery). It is very frustrating but I figure I am in another stall (I had one about 2.5 weeks post op that lasted for about 6 days then I started losing again). Keep following the plan...we will get through this!

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I was told not to eat raw veggies until 3 mos post op. I eat cooked veggies with no problem (bypass on March 3)

Surgery next week, need vitamin help

I use the Bariatric Advantage Multi Chews and Calcium Citrate Chews. They arrive pretty quickly so if you order today they should be there when you get home from the hospital no problem. I wasn't supposed to start my vitamins until 2 weeks post op because they are strong and can upset your stomach. First day I found them kinda gross but they have "grown" on me and I tolerate them no problem.

    Post Op Stomach Injections

they gave heparin shots in the hospital but did not have to self administer anything at home

    Confused by Consult

I went into this firmly believing I would be getting the sleeve but after my pre op testing and research I ended up getting the bypass. I discovered my frequent heartburn was actually GERD and a hiatal hernia. My surgeon had no problem with me switching to the bypass even though my BMI was exactly 40 (I am 5'-3" and my highest weight was 236). She did make the comment that I was on the low end of patients she would want to do a bypass on. I did not want my GERD/heartburn to worsen. I had bypass on March 3 and have been taking pepcid twice daily. I think this is for only the first 3-6 months. I have had NO heartburn since surgery. I would get a second opinion.

    Help with nausea?

I agree with @lizonaplane...I was dehydrated just after surgery and was nauseous and lightheaded. I forced myself to drink my 64 oz per day or else they were going to send me for an IV. As soon as I started to get in my fluids, I felt MUCH better.

    Fluid Intake

Yes...SF jello does count as water...so do SF popsicles.
  21. I had gastric bypass on March 3 with a hiatal hernia repair. I knew I had heartburn issues for a long time but didn't realize until my pre op testing that it was due to a hiatal hernia. They had called it small but when my surgeon was in there doing my bypass she said it was quite large and took a long time to fix it. My stomach fundus got slightly damaged during the hernia fix so they removed a portion of it which is fine with me...less gherlin producing cells in my body. I have had no issues with GERD since surgery. I am so happy to NOT wake up in the middle of the night with stomach acid in my mouth!!!

Have you had your iron levels checked recently? What about Vitamin D levels? Both will cause fatigue and vitamin D deficiency will cause muscle and bone pain. I am always vitamin D deficient and if I don't take my vitamin D pills for a while my legs hurt a lot.

Flight home 5 days after surgery

I second @toodlerue...I had bypass on March 3 and remember thinking to myself "thank god I didn't have to travel to get the surgery cuz I would not have been able to do the airport/plane". I also had a hiatal hernia repair which turned out to be quite large and cumbersome to fix. I was in a lot of pain post op for about a week and I have a high tolerance for pain. Everyone is different so unfortunately you won't really know till after the surgery. I assumed I would have minimal pain so I was quite surprised when it turned out differently.

    VSG and constipation

Constipation is a huge concern of mine. I have had it twice since surgery (I am 6 weeks post op). I take Miralax once a day and regular Colace (stool softner) once a day. Both bouts of constipation occurred when I forgot to take the Miralax 2 days in a row. I have now set a reminder in my Baritastic app so I don't forget.

    Fluid Intake

I have a hard time getting it in. I have a 32 oz bottle with 4 oz marks on the side (made myself but you can buy fancy ones). I have to get two bottles in a day. I am 6 weeks post op and have only missed my water intake a few times (mostly the first few days post op). Pre surgery I could chug the water to get it in so now that I cannot do that, it makes it harder. Frequently, I have 24 oz plus to get in after 8 pm but manage to do so. It just has to be foremost in you thoughts.
